Resolved, PLEASE CLOSE BUG - no further action to be taken.
This problem was due to Alt being mapped by default as the ISO 3rd level
character chooser, blocking its use as a normal Alt key - i.e. switching
to a VT, using Alt-Tab to switch windows in X, killing X, using Alt+n
for menu shortcuts
I'm glad you got it working. Let us know if there's anything else that
can be done.

Thanks - perhaps the default action of the Alt key should _not_ be the
third level ISO character modifier. This will be confusing to many
users.

I have just noticed that Alt does give me € from Alt-2, as printed on
the key which is good. It would be ideal to retain this functionality if
xorg.conf needs a different keymap.
