First verify that the installation media is sane by booting from CDROM
and selecting the check media option.
If that works, then boot the new 2.6.20-12 kernel in recovery mode. At
what point does the CRC error occur?

I'm away from my system right now, but this is with a running Feisty
install (from herd3). No problems with installs until this showed up.
The prior kernel install worked great, I have been using the US archive
for downloads (not installing from media, installing from download)--I
get the same
How about booting in Recovery Mode and taking a picture which you can
then attach.
There were some significant lib-ata changes from 2.6.20-12.19 to
2.6.20-12.20.

I tried to boot with normal recovery. Got the same error message. I am
going to re-download re-install Linux-generic to see if it was a bad
download or a real problem. I'm including a .jpeg of the startup--this
was with quiet splash removed from the kernel line.

I can call this bug closed--I re-downloaded installed the current
kernel from the us archive everything seems to work fine. I can only
guess as to the cause of the prior bad install. This time I used
