I had this problem last night, and found this thread, and eventually,
via some comments on this thread and another link that ?? provided,
discovered what the ACTUAL problem was for me, and I believe it may be a
problem for a number of others here, as some have mentioned installation

honestly I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a problem with my own
hardware... or if I've changed settings in such a way that I've caused
problems with my computer. Whenever I start up my Ubuntu 9.10 operating
system with my external hard drive already plugged into the USB
Again, the touchpad is not working, and not being recognized by xinput
list. Could someone out there please give me some options? Aside from
fixing the bug, which seems to me to be something that could or could
not happen expediently, could someone at least maybe suggest how I might
go about

Touchpad not recognized

okay.. that didn't really fix things for me.. well, maybe it fixed about
50% of the problem.
I tried qetuR's method, checked the box, removed my workaround to force-
start compiz at startup, and then restarted my computer. I suppose
metacity's compositing manager started properly, or at least it
correction - I also had to select compiz fusion icon-compiz options
loose bindings before the problem was entirely fixed. After that I could
deselect loose bindings and it was still okay..

desktop effects back to normal or extra, I get the message desktop
effects could not be enabled and yes, of course, I do have this same

haven't tested the latest upstream kernel yet, but I have upgraded to

Oh, nevermind. After a bit of searching and examination, I finally
discovered that my wi-fi was turned off in my BIOS under onboard
devices. It's odd that that being the case did not cause wi-fi to be
inaccessible in previous distributions, though.
