I have had various problems with Evolution becoming unresponsive and the
whole computer grinding to a halt and only the mouse responding - even

I changed the section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and then pressed Ctrl Alt
Backspace
Logged in, fired up mythTV, problem still the same.
Composite is definately off (I think) because wobbly windows, desktop
cube etc no longer works.

I have an Asus A8Series laptop - A8SC. When I first installed Gutsy Beta
over a week ago the Fn F10/11/12 volume mute/down/up all worked.
At some point in the last week, they stopped working (Thursday or
earlier). The system updates every day - I don't know which day it
Forgot to say - Other Fn keys such as the brightness control still
works.
And when the Fn volume controls are pressed the volume up down graphic
comes up on the screen as normal.

I have done as you suggested (via a usb stick and the startup disk
creator), and lo and behold it loads with Unity.
As to why nvidia-current is installed, I have no idea. Unless it came in
with the xorg-edgers ppa?
I believe I am supposed to get rid of the ppa software by running

I removed the xorg-edgers ppa with 'sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers', then
removed the nvidia drivers with 'sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current'.
Rebooted, and I am now in Unity! Hoorah.

Looks like it was a problem with competing nvidia drivers from a
previous install, so a fresh/live natty install worked fine. Removing
nvidia drivers from the system got unity working on the upgraded
install.

Ok, it hasn't happened for a while, but now it is back.
I killed soffice.bin using kill `pidof etc, restarted office, nothing
appeared. Reviewing htop, soffice was killed, and started again when I
started office.
I killed it again, and moved ~/.openoffice.org to ~/.wasopenoffice.org
and tried

I have the same issue, but with a normal account and Lucid final.
Although there is no sign of open office in the System Monitor, it does
show up in htop, taking 467M of virtual memory, and having used 0.51s of
processor time.
It doesn't always happen, and until it happens open office works

Thanks. Killing it hasn't helped in the past though - I have killed it
using htop rather than the command you suggest but I think they add up
to the same thing.
Also, on a UK qwerty keyboard, the backtick ` character is above the tab
key in the top left of the keyboard :-)

gnome-shell stops working when terminal server client is running
For interest, doesn't happen with later versions of gnome-shell. I have
now installed Version: 2.29.1+git20100325.6deee27d-0ubuntu1~9.10~ricotz1
from http://ubuntu-tweak.com/source/ricotz-testing/ and I can run
terminal server client with no issues.

This has happened for me to on all three of my ubuntu 9.10 computers.
The fix suggested by Spiros worked for me, though unlike coldReactive, I
can switch between apps across all desktops, and I have the normal
behaviour of alt+tab switching between programs (Ctrl+tab continues to
allow switching
As of today's kernel update - 3.8.0-23.34 - the networking now works
with my Atheros AR8161 and Raring 13.04.
