maitener's version. It seems to be lacking the line of the initrd.
the problem was (is?) that when the update took care, it asked me if I
wanted to keep my menu list or put the maintener's version. I took the
maintener's version and it wrote the above menu.lst and of course
without the initrd line it failed to reboot.

2.6.28-11.40-generic on eepc 901 with ralink rt2860 wifi
I can connect to an open wifi network, WEP but not to WPA
with WPA the association times out all the time
only way so far to connect to WPA is for me to use
after a few updates the printing from ubuntu is still slow but is back
to around 2 minutes before the page gets printed.
This certainly has to do with hplip as:
printing the page is slow on the HP laserjet while it is ok on an epson
(not from the same computer though but both using jaunty 386 up
aviv, are you sure you are using the updated 1.8.0 and still not the
1.7? I have uninstalled 1.7, upgraded the system and still can't connect
with 1.80.

I have the little drum sound at the login screen, then I have the defaut
login sound (which is weird as it is the ubuntu scheme which is selected
in gnome-sound-properties). Then nothing, sound is dead.

One interesting thing, all what I said above was without compiz
activated.
If I activate compiz (system/pref/appearance) then the sound is normal
afterwards and upon reboot as well.

one more funny thing.
when the login screen comes up, there is the little drum sound. When I
log in there is no welcome sound.
If I do a udev restart then I hear the welcome sound.

The symptoms match those from Bug #43666
There is the little drum on the login screen, but then the login sound cannot
be heard, no logout sound either.
Other sounds will not be played.
But all sounds can be heard correctly when played (test button arrow) from the
as of this morning's updates, a login sound can be heard (which sounds
like Windows by the way, it's awful).
But still no sound on logout.
Furthermore, the sound cannot be previewed anymore in gnome-sound-properties.
There is also an error while testing the sound server in the devices tab.

there is a Windows login sound upon login indeed as of this morning's update
but that's all the sound I get now. no other sounds can be played.
