I have the same problem. I will "fix" my system now by "making /var/run a symlink to /run." as Steve suggested. Unfortunately "Ubuntu" has not been doing that for me in my case. The two paths are separate directories. Only /run is a tmpfs. /var/run is on the root filesystem. System: Ubuntu 14.04.
