I installed FROM SCRATCH the Ubuntu 8.10 release yesterday. My /etc/adobe
directory
no longer exists, therefore, and I'm running Firefox 3.0.0.
The problem I reported above no longer occurs on my system.
So, I'm happy...

Hmm. I am having same bug, and also some confusion:
1. I am running fglrx on Intrepid release 8.10 on an amd64 SMP box.
2. Switching to guest or guest session produces the black screen and system
hang/crash
described by Harm Jans.
3. I do not see how to switch users any more - shouldn't

This appears to be fixed in the released version of Ubuntu 8.10.
However, I did a complete install onto another partition, though, so it
may be that upgrading from an alpha release would not work.

Usually, I see that videos, e.g., youtube.com are not working, and later on

I have the same problem. The system stalls at during reboot at waiting for
root file system,
and eventually (a minute or two later) drops into initramfs(?).
This often happens when the system does a soft reboot.
After power-on, I usually have to reboot 2 or 3 times before it takes off.

I got it to fail again; It looks like IOMMU was already set in the BIOS,
as far as I can see...

I'm having similar problems on two ASUS boxes, both with SATA drives
attached.
One of them, an ASUS V8M-MX/S, refuses to boot AT ALL after the Hardy upgrade.
It always drops into the initramfs screen.
Adding all_generic_ide fixed it, in the sense that it now boots, but I have
no idea if this

the problem: several boot-ups from
power-on and from panel/runninggreenmanexitsign/restart have proceeded without
the hang. I have not
observed any hangs since making the change.

Me, too!
I'm running an ATI HD 3450, with Xinerama enabled and apparently working
properly.
HOWEVER, any attempt to log off, or to change users by either the user
switcher or
little-green-man menu, result in black screens and hang. Hard reset is the only
way out: ctrl-alt-bksp doesn't fix it.
I upgraded the ASUS m/b BIOS per my comments in bug#227176, and
the problems went away. I consider this problem resolved, at least on my box.

One possibility is that the APL385.ttf font entry for diamond is either wrong,
or has some subtle problem that causes gnome-terminal to get the scaling wrong.

Attached is a screen shot from Open Office. In that, you can see that
the diamond character displays correctly at different sizes
(i.e., slightly larger than the iota and rho) when using Times New Roman,
but displays much smaller when using the fixed-width font.
