I am not sure if this bug is related:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wacom-tools/+bug/234466
I have seen both behaviors:
a) tablet does not work at all
b) tablet goes crazy
So maybe both come from the same bug?

According to the installation-guide-i386 of ubuntu 9.04 the needed
option is:
d-i user-setup/encrypt-home boolean false
AFAIK this does NOT work with ubuntu 8.10.
Also there is no default defined, so that you cannot completely preseed

Just a note: The bug was fixed upstream on 2008-11-25!

Since the version of x2x haven changed since hardy (and x2x worked in
jaunty), it must be a bug in gdm. Or a change at least.
Please tell what you don't understand, and I will try to clear it up to
you.
