[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2014-01-03 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Steve Langasek, thank you for the clarification. Could you please test the
latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

The issue is no longer reproducible with a current trusty kernel in my
current configuration (3.12.0-7-generic, with an SSD - I think this bug
report may have been from before I installed the SSD). So there doesn't
seem to be any point in testing further upstream kernels.

[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2013-05-09 Thread Akkana Peck
I just upgraded to ringtail (from pangolin, not quetzal) and I'm seeing
frequent firefox hard freezes, where I have to kill the process. (It is
killable, though.) It's not related to youtube or flash; most often it
happens when I'm visiting a new page. The problem isn't part of Ubuntu's
firefox build, because I'm using Firefox 20.0 from mozilla.org. It's as
if there's some underlying networking library that used to be
asynchronous that in raring is now blocking the process.

Curiously, I'm also on an X201, though it's hard to believe this would
be specific to a single model laptop.

2013-02-13 Thread madbiologist
This bug can be reproduced on a system without the Adobe Flash plugin
installed by using Firefox to watch a YouTube video or some other online
video. It will crash fairly soon due to bug #1085342. The likelyhood of
crashing is possibly higher if using Firefox 18.0.1 due to JavaScript
related stability issues which are fixed in Firefox 18.0.2. Attempting
to relaunch Firefox after the crash usually results in a Firefox is
already running error, and attempting to kill -9 the Firefox process
does nothing. If you kill -9 the (phantom) MediaDecode process the
Firefox process will be killed as well and you can then relaunch
Firefox.

[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2013-02-07 Thread madbiologist
Two things:

1) I've never tried killall, but I've had success with kill -9 process
number, after looking up the process with ps -e (the process number in
your example is 3728 - no doubt you know that but just in case anyone
else is reading this bug).

2) Instead of kill -9 on the firefox process number, I have to kill -9
on the MediaDecode process number (I am usually watching youtube when it
crashes, and am hoping the Fix JavaScript related stability issues in
the 18.0.2 update will help with that), which must be blocking the kill
-9 of firefox. Does killall take care of that?

I have no such 'MediaDecode' process. Regardless, the issue here is that a
'kill -9' on a process should not be blocked - it should cause immediate
death of the process, and the fact that it hasn't means something's wrong in
the kernel.

I'm not disputing that. I'm just trying to find a workaround, otherwise
you probably have to reboot to relaunch firefox, right? Perhaps we are
seeing the same bug - are there any other phantom processes in your
process list (ps -e), other than firefox? If so perhaps, something
funny is going on with thread locking? I'm not a kernel expert though.

Joseph Salisbury - what are the potentially relevant changes between the
two kernel versions you mentioned in comment #20?

[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2013-02-06 Thread Steve Langasek
'strace -p 3728' also hangs, producing no output, and must be hard-
killed in turn.

[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2013-02-06 Thread Steve Langasek
I was asked to show the output of 'perf top', but perf appears to be
missing from the 3.8.0-4 kernel in raring.

** Tags added: apport-collected running-unity

** Description changed:

Something is wrong in raring. After upgrade, I have twice run into a
problem where firefox takes over 100% of a CPU, X takes 100% of another,
and the desktop is completely unresponsive (even to the point that the
cursor doesn't move and I can't switch VTs).

The reason I'm filing this bug against the kernel, however, is that this
time I decided to kill -9 firefox... and *it's not working*.

So something is seriously wrong with this kernel, because kill -9
  shouldn't fail.

[Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring

2013-02-06 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue just start happening with the 3.8.0-4.8 kernel? Do you
know if this was happening with 3.8.0-3.7?
