Might the problem be compiz / compiz-fusion? : yes it is recommanded to
ununstall beryl (all beryl packages) and install compiz packages, i do that
and it work fine with emerald. so, be sure that

Emerald crashed immediately after archive manager opened a message box to
confirm the creation of a new folder.
FYI, I've had Desktop Effects working right out of the box.

Just had the same crash. I just enabled desktop effects (from none to
normal).

Same here, but I didn't just enable Visual effects, they have been on
since the install (yesterday) and running without any problems. I've had
similar crashes with Feisty since I started using Beryl/Compiz (and now
Compiz Fusion).
I however did play around a little with OpenGL/ATi drivers earlier
