Hi all!
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 on Live-usb (persistence mode). Once, just for trial,
I selected Hindi language on boot up. After that session, when I restarted
the machine, I selected the default English, but it still boots in to Hindi.
If I select Gujarati, it shows Gujarati, but when I select

GB max is what i will install.
Why don't you try Debian testing? It seems to be most popular rolling
release distro.

syslinux only if you are trying the latter. In case of
your external HDD, you would have *installed* linux on it, and hence
wouldn't have faced this problem.
I frequently use my Elive LiveUSB key, which has grub installed for
booting. And it is on a ext2 filesystem.

How and what strategies do you use to share data between the OS's
I don't access my Ubuntu partitions from windows. Instead I have a
common vfat partition where I store data needed on both systems, like
songs, videos and such.

IMO - live CD load rootfs on RAM but Install media might not be doing so.
Read speeds of CD drive is obviously slower than that of HDD. Everytime
you want to load a program, reading instructions from HDD (ie. installed
mode) will be faster than CD drive.

As for the answer to your real question, even if I know Ubuntu well
enough to directly install it without trying, I would go for LiveCD
option just to make sure that all (most) of the hardware is detected.
