no GUI after update to 12.04

Whoa, just a high handed minute, there.
I never said it was an X bug, I picked X because that wretched robot
wanted me to pick something, and I followed the advice it pointed to on
the Wiki.
I had a perfectly good 10.04 system, ran the automatic update, and it is
now broken.I regard that as
Xorg don't want this one.
I can't find a 'package' for the process of doing a distribution upgrade, so
this is my next best guess.
I rather think that having to know the name of a package before
searching for it in launchpad is counter-intuitive, by the way!

Right. Kdm. Should it not be running gdm?
How do I switch display managers from the command line? presumably
something in /etc/ or etc/init?

OK, that xlog file was full of failures, so I wondered if it was something to
do with my profile. I have made a new one:
as root
mv /home/bob /home/bob.old
cp /etc/skel /home/bob
chown bob:bob -R /home/bob
reboot - exactly the same. So it was nothing to do with my profile
then.
curiously,
OK, I just ran /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_tst -p and got Error:
unable to open display
I ran xinit, which produced a black screen with a white terminal in it, then ran
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_tst -p -d :0
and got
OpenGl vendor string: Nvidia Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce
wretched thing - I was still editing that. Continued:
OpenGL version string 2.1.2 NVIDIA 295.40
and then 10 things answered 'yes'' ending with
Unity 3D supported: yes
So obviously:
1) Unity does need X
2) X is not starting.
I am trying to pick my way through upstart and /etc/init to find out

I then restored my original home directory
cd /home
mv bob bob.try
mv bob.old bob
and rebooted.
I got the next screenshot

For the life of me I cannot see why the Sys V init system was replaced.
It was simple, and easy to understand, and you only had to do it once or
twice a year except when debugging forced many reboots. Even then it
was more than fast enough.
I am having real trouble trying to work out what starts
