The way to go is a bit different, but regarding the implementation inside

there is a pbuilder-dist example in the pbuilder package.
Our pbuilder-dist is just an improved version of it.
My rational is, not to touch those example files, and not to include our
pbuilder-dist into the pbuilder, just because there are many people who are
not using our way, but
