Not sure now, I used one of those HDDs for a while without problem
attached directly to the pi (no HUB) 2.5amp Pi
Check the filesystem on the USB drive ... you might have to load
additional support in pCP.

Try using a USB stick with a few albums on it. If that scans Ok, then as
Paul suggests the USB HDD probably needs it's own power

I have built a few RPi and matched them with USB HDD - running both LMS
and as a player - all OK.
But I started to help someone else, and I am having an issue with the
USB HDD failing to be scanned by LMS.
