Greetings - after using launch document to launch a PDF file (using the
default PDF viewer) is there any way to get a reference to the window it
opened in, and then get and set the vScroll of that window?

I'm pretty sure there's an incompatability between the latest versions of

First time using open process for me. Fascinating! Thanks Monte. Not
quite sure on the write and read syntax.

My original shell command which works fine is:
   get shell(appPath srcPath trgPath)
where the app is a command line utility which converts a PDF file to
multiple JPEG's

I can't get the app to show up in 'the openProcess' using the 'neither'

but then how would I send the open process a command to start the
conversion?

Ah, I assumed you didn't need to read from the process. If you don't need to
read or know when it's done then:
open process appPath srcPath trgPath for neither

If you need to know when it's done then something like this should do it
(untested hacking in email client)

put appPath srcPath trgPath into tProcess
open process tProcess for read
send ReadProcess tProcess to me in 0 milliseconds

on ReadProcess pProcess
   local tOut
   repeat
read from process pProcess in 5 milliseconds
  put it after tOut
  wait 20 milliseconds with messages
if the result is eof then
 close process pProcess
 exit repeat
  end if
   end repeat
   PDFExported tOut
end ReadProcess

on PDFExported pOutput
   -- let the user know
end PDFExported

Inaccurate Android Setup Steps in Livecode's Tutorial

2013-09-24 Thread Ray Horsley
I'm attempting to follow these steps to set up my system for some
Android dev work:

http://lessons.runrev.com/s/lessons/m/2571/l/27385-how-do-i-become-an-android-developer-on-a-pc#!prettyPhoto

The first is this link to install the Java SDK:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

but there's no way to click the first button in a row of four since
there's no row of four buttons. Evidently the web page has changed.
There's an icon of a coffee cup but no icon of only the word Java as
per the Livecode tutorial steps.

I guessed and went with the Java Platform (JDK) 7u40 download and on the
following screen I chose the Windows x64 variant of Java SE Development
Kit 7u40 for my 64 bit machine. This download did not give me an
installer or a wizzard as Livecode's steps detail. It simply gave me
compressed files. I decompressed them and continued 'guessing around'
on my own. In doing so I was able to create a virtual Android, but when
I try to set the Location of my Android development SDK root in
Livecode's preferences it complains the folder I've chosen is not a
valid Android SDK folder regardless of which folder in that area I choose.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ray

Vaughn,

Thanks for your response, although I'm sorry to hear you too are having
trouble with this. Since my post I did find a different link to the
Java SDK.

Instead of using this link from Livecode's tutorial:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

I tried this link:
   www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

and had better luck in that at least I got an installer. However, after
running it I still get the invalid Java SDK root folder error from
Livecode's preferences regardless as to which folder in that area I select.

Anybody else?

Thanks,

PDF's to PNG's on Windows 8

2013-09-18 Thread Ray Horsley
Sorry to bring this topic back up again but it seems there's no solution for
this.

Installing QuickTime on Windows does not display PDF's in a player object.
This is odd since this works wonderfully on a Mac.

Yrying to display PDF's in a browser object opens Adobe's Reader which, in
Windows' very blunt way, hogs the entire screen burdening the user with lots of
work just to get back to LiveCode. Even if this worked I'm not sure how I'd
determine the number of pages and move through them to get the snapshots.

Quartam Software has a nice PDF package but it only does the opposite by
creating PDF files in Livecode.

So there's apparently no solution to this seemingly common need to be able to
view and convert PDF files to single PNG's or JPEG's in Livecode.

Suggestions?

Creating an ipa file is actually quite easy. It's just a zip archive (more

In the Finder, create a folder named Payload (the uppercase P is important).
Copy your app bundle into that folder.
Compress the Payload folder by right/control-clicking and choosing the
 Compress option.
Now you have Payload.zip. Rename this file to [app_name].ipa. Case is
important. The finder will ask you to confirm that you want to use the .ipa
 extension.
Then you can distribute it via TestFlight, or you can email it to your
tester and he/she can install it by dragging it into iTunes and then syncing
 his/her device.

There are probably utilities around that can help you do this, but it's easy
enough to do manually, so I haven't really bothered.

 cough cough cough cough

Distributing an iOS App for Testing

2013-08-07 Thread Ray Horsley
Are there simple steps to do this anywhere?

I believe I've added my tester's UDID. I just need to get him the app
(standalone). TestFlight asks me to create an IPA. I usually drink those
:-) Not sure what that means in the world of software but I'm unable create
one by archiving my app in Xcode 4.6.3.

iTunes Connect seems to be interested only in gathering all the information for
me to submit my app for approval in the store but I'm not there yet. Just need
to get it onto somebody else's iPad for testing.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Re: Distributing an iOS App for Testing

2013-08-07 Thread Ray Horsley
Chris,

When I read through these steps I though you're kidding me! but they seem to
have worked. The jury's actually still out till I hear back from my tester or
try it myself. Anyway, many thanks!

Does Monte have an app or something which facilitates this? I'm unable to find
it searching through his site at:

 Ray,

Creating an ipa file is actually quite easy. It's just a zip archive (more or
less) of your app bundle. There is a slight trick. Follow these steps:

In the Finder, create a folder named Payload (the uppercase P is important).
Copy your app bundle into that folder.
Compress the Payload folder by right/control-clicking and choosing the
 Compress option.
Now you have Payload.zip. Rename this file to [app_name].ipa. Case is
important. The finder will ask you to confirm that you want to use the .ipa
 extension.
Then you can distribute it via TestFlight, or you can email it to your tester
and he/she can install it by dragging it into iTunes and then syncing his/her
 device.

There are probably utilities around that can help you do this, but it's easy
enough to do manually, so I haven't really bothered.

 Good luck.

one by archiving my app in Xcode 4.6.3.

iTunes Connect seems to be interested only in gathering all the information
for me to submit my app for approval in the store but I'm not there yet.
Just need to get it onto somebody else's iPad for testing.

 Any help is greatly appreciated,

Re: Is Snapshot Possible with Two Monitors?

2013-06-04 Thread Ray Horsley
I'm using Livecode 5.5.4 on a Mac running 10.7.5 and I get pretty weird
results. If I create a new main stack, put a single button on the one and only
card which issues import snapshot on mouseUp I can click it and get the
crosshair cursor. But no matter where I drag open a rectangle nothing happens
and I continue to have the crosshair cursor as I drag open one rectangle after
another. If I type a keyboard shortcut such as command-S I then get a snapshot
from some random area on the monitors imported as an image.

Re: Drag and Drop

2013-05-10 Thread Ray Horsley
Very interesting point Jacqueline. In my case my image control displays
nothing. I use it as a template, ultimately to make images out of what users
drag and drops. It's the same dimensions as the stack itself. Since the image
control displays nothing as it isn't linked (the FileName of it) to any file
I'm not sure whether the whole thing is consider transparent pixels or not.
Livecode doesn't seem to have a setting of transparent or opaque for image
controls. So I've experimented with buttons giving them the same script as the
image has:

on dragEnter
   set the dragAction to copy
   pass dragEnter
end dragEnter

The new thing I've discovered is I can consistently break Livecode's accepting
the drop, evidenced by the cursor turning into a circle with a line through it
instead of a plus sign, if I drag extremely slowly right at the point where I
stop dragging across the desktop and start dragging over the stack window.
This happens even if I let the button overlap off the stack window. If I
continue dragging around on top of the stack to another button with the same
script I do get the plus sign for a cursor. Weird isn't it?

At the end of the day I'm wondering if this should be reported as a
bug. It seems like something is getting hooked in memory. It's
weird that I can drag a file onto my Livecode stack (which is one
large image control with the drag handlers in it) and get nothing.
Then, simply continuing to drag off the stack window and right back
 on it fixes it.

I wonder if it is because you are dropping onto an image. Images don't
register mouse events unless you click (or presumably release) on an opaque
pixel. It may be that sometimes you're dropping onto a transparent area and
 then nothing will happen.

You could test the theory by putting a big button over the card and seeing if
the drop is reliable there, or by always consciously dropping exactly on an
 opaque area.

Re: Drag and Drop

2013-05-10 Thread Ray Horsley
Well I haven't tried Linux but this behavior happens on both Mac and Windows.

And Paul, thanks for the card script idea. I started out trying things in the
card script but when I got the sporadic behavior I decided it was because a
card is technically not a control. Not sure about that. In any event I'm
sorry to report the script you've given me still isn't stopping the cursor from
remaining a circle with a line through it without changing to the plus sign.
I'll continue to experiment. Have you tried really slowly dragging a file onto
a stack window from the desktop to see if it changes to the circle with a line
through it even though you've got this in your card's script:

on dragEnter
set the dragAction to copy
end dragEnter

Drag and Drop

2013-05-09 Thread Ray Horsley
I've never used this feature before and no matter how I set it up it seems kind
of sporadic. The goal is to drag an image file (jpg, jpeg, png, etc.) from the
desktop onto a card, get the path to it and ultimately import it into the
stack. I've place an image control on the card which is the same dimensions as
the stack itself and scripted the following:

on dragEnter
set the dragAction to copy -- this is the sporadic part which only
sometimes turns the cursor into a plus thus allowing dragDrop to catch the drop
   pass dragEnter
end dragEnter

on dragDrop
   put the dragData into curFilePath
-- continue to import the file
end dragDrop

This works 'some of the time' but I'm still often unable to drop what I'm
dragging since the cursor doesn't always turn into the plus sign. Each time
this happens I try dragging the file again, immediately, and it suddenly works
when I didn't change a thing. What am I missing to get drag/drop working
consistently?

Re: Drag and Drop

2013-05-09 Thread Ray Horsley
Many thanks to you all who responded to this thread I started earlier today.
Unfortunately I still haven't resolved this issue so any other thought are
appreciated. Here's a few responses to some of the ideas which were presented:

   - The mouseDown and mouseStillDown unfortunately don't work since I'm
dragging a file from the desktop to a Livecode stack (not beginning the drag
action in Livecode) although that's kind of cool to know that mouseMove
messages get sent during a grab. I didn't know that.

   - Doing anything with on dragStart also does not work since I'm starting
the drag operation outside of Livecode (on a desktop file)

   - Setting the dragAction to copy instead of move works better in my
case since it adds a plus sign to the cursor (when it works) but still does not
solve the intermittent failure of Livecode to accept the drop consistently.

   - Thanks for the link to the article Pinning Drag-and-Drop to the Mat but
I had actually read through it yesterday when I began wrestling with this. It,
too, does not address dragging files from the desktop into Livecode.

At the end of the day I'm wondering if this should be reported as a bug. It
seems like something is getting hooked in memory. It's weird that I can drag a
file onto my Livecode stack (which is one large image control with the drag
handlers in it) and get nothing. Then, simply continuing to drag off the stack
window and right back on it fixes it.

I'll continue to wrestle and post any solutions I find.

Thanks!

2012-03-23 Thread Ray Horsley
Thanks Richard for these thoughts. I believe I fall into a variant of the
camp A which you've mentioned, working with organizations run by really dumb
and most of all lazy IT staff. Not all of our clients are like this, but
frequently we'll run into IT guys who are simply too lazy too download anything
to all the machines in their schools. This is a sales block and my hope was
that Rev's browser plugin would get us past that, even though that, too, must
be downloaded.

I couldn't agree more with the technical case you've made here but who was that
shoe salesman in New York who made the famous comment Give the lady what she
wants? We've got to make sales and if the client wants software that runs in
a browser we can either argue with her or make the sale and move on. Obviously
the latter of these is by far preferable.

If it's gone someone should let RunRev know:

From what I see the education industry is not the only area moving
rapidly toward doing everything in a browser. Healthcare, finance,
you name it, everybody spends most of the day in browsers today.
Does this mean the majority of us Livecoders are doing nothing more
  than writing mobile apps?

Ironically, a mobile app is very much like the most viable, flexible, and
cost-effective alternative to RevWeb: net-savvy standalones.

Whether the LiveCode engine is wrapped as a browser plugin or your own
standalone, either way it'll need institutional buy-in to get your stacks
 distributed.

Any org that will allow a third-party binary browser plugin should also allow
 a standalone.

Like the browser plugin, a standalone can easily download stacks from a
server, even compressed stacks for quick delivery.

But unlike a browser you have far more options:

Your users can enjoy the flexibility any desktop app has in terms of a UI
dedicated for its workflow, along with local file access and other
traditional app features, which can be used to provide an offline mode, smart
 caching, and more.

And if needed, a standalone can be more secure than a browser: just turn on
the secureMode as the first line in your startup handler, and your app will
be prevented from many any changes at all on the local machine.

I suspect that most of the laments from not being able to use RevWeb for
 deployment fall into two camps:

 a) Devs who've had to work with orgs run by dumb really dumb IT staff who
somehow think that a proprietary binary executable that's called a browser
plugin is somehow inherently safer than an application

 b) Devs who haven't really pursued such conversations with their clients
seriously, so the issue is largely just theoretical for them.

I suspect this is related to externals. The C runtime can be compiled into

Check with your external suppliers. If you build the external, consider

I have tripped up on getting the libraries right, so it takes some

I wonder if this could be caused by some error down in the library that is

After some consideration, I think it is more likely the second.

The location of the error codes is listed in the dictionary under the
errorDialog entry, along with instructions on how to get them. You can grab
them and stick them in a reference somewhere if you want:

get the cErrorsList of card 1 of stack revErrorDisplay

The same dictionary entry also explains what all the numbers mean.

I have a lookup stack I made that I use as a plugin for this, which is how I
looked up your error codes. I was meaning to upload it to RevOnline until I
got locked out. I seem to be able to get back in there now so I'll upload it
 one of these days.

In the mean time you can just grab that list and put it into a text file or a
 stack field.

I'm not sure how you get a list of running handlers. Generally it isn't an
issue because they run sequentially and don't usually overlap. One exception
is when one handler calls another, which calls the original again. That may
be what you're seeing. If you do that too much you get a recursion error.

Usually there are mutliple lines in a raw error message. These lines indicate

I made a little iPhone app that makes it possible to look up error codes.

Idle Messages to Hidden Stacks

2012-02-04 Thread Ray Horsley

I thought idle handlers ran in hidden stacks as long as they were top level.
Seems this has gone away. Any ideas on this? I'm trying to get an idle
handler to run in a hidden stack but I can only send messages from that same
stack. Sending idle from the stack to itself in X seconds is not working
because other handlers in stacks I have no control over are flushing events.

It seems your only choices are (1) put your stack outside the realm of those

 messages to run.

Approach #1 means running it under a different instance of the engine (e.g.
as a standalone that communicates with instance #1 via sockets for example),
which could be pretty complex depending on what your stack is doing.

Approach #2 means running your stuff inside a repeat loop that has a 'wait x
seconds with messages' inside the loop. Seems like that would be impervious
to flushEvents() but I haven't tested it.

Maybe someone else will think of other ways to handle your situation.

Settings Scripts from a Script in a Standalone

2012-02-03 Thread Ray Horsley

I've just noticed that in 5.0.2 a line in an idle handler script which sets the
script of another stack is now failing. There's nothing in the result when it
fails, although I do get a rather cryptic return if I put it in a try-catch
(below). The rest of the idle handler simply stops running. The content of
the script being set is only three lines long so I'm sure it doesn't exceed
Livecode's limit (which I believe is 10 lines). As a matter of fact, if I run
the same handle from a button in the standalone it works fine.

Here's the try-catch error:
360,0,0
90,96,22
449,96,7,on idle
535,96,1,on idle

Here's the script:
   put on myHandler into tmpScript
   put send numToChar(34)doIdlenumToChar(34) to stack
numToChar(34)•Panels Shell•numToChar(34) into line 2 of tmpScript
put end myHandler into line 3 of tmpScript
set the script of stack Panels to tmpScript

Any ideas?

Help with API Methods

2011-12-21 Thread Ray Horsley
Sorry. I guess my question did provide pretty scant specs. Anyway, yes, I
enrolled in the Apple Developer program last year after purchasing an iPad.
I've since given the iPad to somebody else in our company and I just bought a
new iPad 2. After I renewed the developer membership I setup the new iPad 2
using the Apple ID. My first attempt at saving a standalone prompted me to
install SDK 5 which I did. Now I've got this error after choosing a profile I
created last year. Could it be that profile is no good anymore? I'm using
Lvecode 5.0.2 with Mac 10.6.8.

Thanks for your thoughts on this Mark.

Colin,

I'm impressed you'd remember this. Very good! It seemed to me when I posted
this question (today) that I had posted it a few years ago but I wasn't sure.
The answer is I didn't get very far with it a few years ago and I'm still
struggling with it today.

I've used QuickKeys on the Mac to create my own keyboard shortcuts for
frequently used menu choices but for some reason QuickKeys doesn't like having
the shift and the command key together for this one particular command, Run, in
the script Editor window.

Anyway, where on the Mac keyboard is the Play button you're referring to?

Honestly though, wouldn't it be nice if there were a section in the Script

produces this:

Read the following line from the poem.You#x2019;ve disturbed a mighty river

Can I operate on this entire chunk of html text or do I need to dig out pieces

Yes. To display UTF8, you need to convert it to UTF16 before setting the

 -- convert from UTF8 to UTF16
 uniEncode(myUTF8,UTF8)

 -- convert from UTF16 to UTF8
 uniDecode(myUTF16,UTF8)

To convert from plain text to UTF8 you can do this:

 uniDecode(uniEncode(myEnglish,ANSI),UTF8)

i don't have time to look at the stack at this time of the day, but
generally, try to keep setting and getting of imagesource as simple as
possible.

crashes in general should go to supp...@runrev.com , or the quality center.
Not that i did that, because interrupting a set of a imagesource does
sometimes crash, unfortunately i haven't been able to reproduce it, so i
didn't report it.

try to download your images into files, then showing those files in your
image object.

I didn't set the radio behavior of the group. I believe that's the default

Confirmed that it crashes on the third card.

Ray, a question:

Why is 'Radiobehavior' true on group 'Header'? this is usually only used for
controlling radio buttons.

Just tested after deselecting 'radiobehavior'. No crash.

My guess would be that you're locking messages, and libURL needs messages in
order to get the URL from your server. Try not locking messages, then use
flushevents if you need to.

Hugh,

Very interesting! Are you sure you gave it a good try? I have to work it a
bit to get it to crash. Usually trying different speeds of
click-click-click-click without regard as to what I see on screen.
Nonetheless, I think downloading/importing the images and setting the
imageSource to their ID's is going to be the solution.

Thanks,

I cannot crash your stack. Works fine. Windows XP w/4.5.2 in the mc IDE.

Am suspecting either the version or (heaven forfend) the LC IDE.

Why use a url-based imgSrc? Why not store the imgs in a substack instead?

If you have to fequently update the imgs, can you 'start using' a url-based
stack of the required img references on launch so it's in cache instead?

Livecode Crashes with Image Source Set to a URL

2011-05-19 Thread Ray Horsley
Greetings,

I've created a simple stack of 3 cards with Prev and Next buttons to
navigate through them. Each card has a single field with a single character
whose imageSource is set to a URL, for example:

http://linkit.com/Schools/ETS%20Items/ETS%20Item%20Bank/ETS10Q1/01%20Full%20
Bank/06%20Math%20QTI%20with%20GUIDs%20and%2096dpi%20PNG/Grade%2007Math-51/im
ages/mml1616474.png

To make sure no other handlers are running unnecessarily I've written the
button scripts as:

on mouseUp

   lock messages

   go next card

put the short name of this cd into fld CardName

end mouseUp

Nonetheless, if you repeatedly click either the Prev or Next button rapidly
Livecode will crash (quit unexpectedly and without warning). In some cases
the stack file itself becomes coruppted and can not be re-opened.

(I'd love to share this tiny stack with anybody who's interested. Please
let me know.)

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks,

Ray

Hi Ray,

Just a suggestion...

on mouseUp
   lock messages
   go next card
put the short name of this cd into fld CardName
   --| Add this line...
   get flushEvents(all)
   --| And this for completeness...
   unlock messages
end mouseUp

Does it solve your problem?

You are also not unlocking messages, which (techincally) is a good thing to
do unless there is a good reason not to do so.

Thanks for your response but I'm not having any luck with this. I've tried

I think, but not sure, that the layoutControl handler is what you want,
although its sole parameter is a control rectangle so I'm not sure how you
would determine what column got resized. Sorry, haven't done anything with
thiss but maybe you can find out more at

That did it! Many thanks to zryip theSlug and Trevor for this simple
solution.

setprop dgColumnWidth
hide graphic ColHiliter-- a graphic I use to highlight column
headings, needs to be put away when column widths are adjusted
   pass dgColumnWidth
end dgColumnWidth

Hi Ray,
The script has to be in the custom behavior for the column. If you haven't
used custom column behaviors, probably easiest thing is to take a look at
the link I sent in my earlier email - lots of lessons on how to use
datagrids there including setting up a custom column behavior. And I just
realised I answered my own question about how to figure out which column got
resized!

I think, but not sure, that the layoutControl handler is what you
want, although its sole parameter is a control rectangle so I'm not
sure how you would determine what column got resized. Sorry, haven't
done anything with thiss but maybe you can find out more at

If it's a text run, each character can have its own textshift setting.
If they all aren't the same, you get mixed.

I don't think you can select an entire column. What you can do is fake it.
The Data Grid Helper by Zryip allows you to set a script that disables
sorting, but you need to make the user think a column is selected.

Data Grid Helper also has a way of manually setting alternating column
colors like you can with rows. You should see if he will include a new
script to hilite a single column (if that is even possible).

Editing a Cell in a Datagrid

2011-03-02 Thread Ray Horsley
Greetings,

LiveCode's datagrid seems kind of sticky to me. I'm simply trying to open
up any given cell for editing without obligating the user to double-click
it. I'm not having any luck with the commands from the tutorials such as
EditFieldText, EditValue, EditKey and EditKeyOfIndex. EditFieldText seems
most likely but it never likes the parameters I send it. EditCell seems
pretty straight forward by simply passing the column name and line number
but this produces an error that no such handler exists. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Open the Application Browser by using the Tools menu

then choose Revolution UI Elements in Lists in the View menu ( LiveCode
may have changed this menu entry)

Now you should see all the Integrated Dev Environ stacks (IDE) that all
begin with 'rev', with the exception of the stack called Home

You can now open these stacks and cards, scripts and settings. If you
modify and save changes, your IDE will retain those, so be careful about
corrupting your editing environ.

Hope this helps.

I needed to do the same thing for a LC tool I use. The only way I found to
work it was by polling. This means that the script may miss the keypress if
it is too short.

-- poll for control-enter keypress
on KeyMonitor
   get , the keysDown ,
if ,65507, is in it and ,65293, is in it and the hilight of btn
Active is true then
  -- do stuff here
   end if
if KeyMonitor is not in the pendingmessages then send KeyMonitor to me in
10 ticks
end KeyMonitor

I wouldn't want to use this for a program you plan to distribute, but for my
own purposes - where I know about the sample rate and will remember to hold
the keys down for a moment - it works fine.

It does for me. You just need to find out the values of the keys you are

RE: Bullets in Script Editor Window

2011-02-09 Thread Ray Horsley
I think it's probably a matter of which keyboard you're using.

Oh. It really does work. What do you know?

For me it does not matter if numLock is on or not. Works both ways.

Just tried it here, is working for me so I have a stupid question. If
you're using the keypad, is your numlock on?

 Craig,

It works fine on my Mac, too. I'm only having problems on the Windows
 side.
The way it works it you hold down the option (alt) key and type a
zero, then (continuing to hold down the option key) you type a 1, etc,
till you finish typing 0, 1, 4, 9. The bullet should appear when you
release the option key after typing the 9. I actually get the bullet
but at some random location, not where I started.

Do you mean the issue is strictly in Windows? Because option-8 works
 fine on my Mac.

But how does one type option 0149? I would need two friends to help
me type that all at once.

Typing bullets on a Mac is a simple option-8 (I believe) while on
Windows it's option-0149. However, type this in Livecode's script
editor window and you end up with the blinking insertion point jumping
all over the place, which can be quite aggravating. Anybody have any
 ideas?

Not a bad idea. I'll try adding something like that to the script editor
stack.

Thanks,

I wonder if you can trap for alt-8 just for windows, issue a command to type
numtochar(149) and pass everything else?

Sharing an iPad Standalone

I understand the only way of posting an app for others to download is
through Apple's app store. Anybody know where I can get the procedure to do
this.
