Hi Camm

The mergExt externals are supported by LiveCode so the best route for support
is supp...@livecode.com <mailto:supp...@livecode.com>.

I think the issue is the need for “Thread Safe” and / or “Concurrent Buffering”

Can anyone give guidance on application of the above using Livecode ?

MergExt BLE

2021-01-14 Thread General 2018 via use-livecode
Hi ,

Have an application for IOS and started to use MergExt BLE.

This is working great with livecode on finding devices , connecting and writing.

I have an issue with reading , it works but missing data randomly on read.

The BLE device is using Notify.

In “didupatevalueforcharactistic“ values are return after writing a request.
But sometimes half the response or other random results.

The application needs to send a few commands each will reply with unique data.

So :-
Write 123
Read result and action
Write 456
Read result and action and so on...

I am sure this is no fault of MergBLE it just cannot find livecode doc on how
to structure the data flow using MergBLE commands and Messages.

Any help would be appreciated.

2017-04-14 Thread Richmond Mathewson via use-livecode

I worked that out by looking the URL up on my Mac: Thanks.

The Android tablet browser, however . . . .

This app only gives me the Blue-bot's MAC address and
something called "RAW DATA": 0x0201020809426C7565426F740303F0FF

Ultimately you did help me, but in an unexpected way insofar as your message
stimulated me to start fooling around with one of my Android devices,
and I did find

something that looks very much like the robot's UUID with another app:

1101--1000-8000-00805f9b34fb

Whether that will be "enough" has yet to be seen.

Best, Richmond.

Something called 'BLE TOOL' gave me the 88 number and then churned

Re: mergEXT

2017-04-12 Thread Monte Goulding via use-livecode
Hi Folks

You probably want to get some docs for the robot and find out the service UUID
that it offers then scan for peripherals with that service UUID. That’s the
normal way of doing things but if there’s no docs available (from the looks of
their downloads page you will need to request dev docs) you can scan for any
peripherals and inspect them to work out what’s on offer. It would be great to
get a write up of this for the LC blog if you get it all working.

The demo stack are inside that Ext folder which on mac is inside the app bundle
-> Contents > Tools > Ext > mergBLE  > mergBLE.livecode. It isn’t
pretty (just the baste basics needed to test functionality). We know this isn’t
the most helpful location. At some point it would be nice to have a open demo
stack button on the docs.

Cheers

Monte

Sorry Jerry, I’ve led you a merry dance. It turns out that 8.0.X only added an
interim feature for iOS covering most of my externals. Standalone inclusions
have been completely reworked for 8.1.

Of course. Ours is an imperfect world. No single license can serve all
goals, and all systems can always be improved.

My only point was that the GPL seems a reasonably good fit for LiveCode
Ltd's goals with its Community Edition.

You offered the success of Linux as proof of the pudding as to how
great GPL is but you failed to mention that the Linux Kernel is
forever held to GPL v 2:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel#GPL_version_3

Yes, Linux uses GPL.

I don't see where my not noting which specific version of the GPL the
project uses is necessarily a "failure". I'm just a developer; my job
does not involve either managing the Linux project nor advocating any
specific licenses for others to use. I merely share the opinion of
LiveCode Ltd's counsel that the GPL is a good fit for their goals at
this time.

As a very separate side matter unrelated to what I wrote, the
differences between GPL v2 and v3 are indeed interesting, esp. in our
modern world of rampant software patent abuse.

One of the reasons GPL v2 is especially useful for Linux is that GPL v3
includes limitations on patent claims, while Linux has been spared from
being abused by patent trolls by using the more patent-neutral language
of GPL v2 to build a massive pool of defensive patents - anyone who
might consider suing Linux over a patent will likely be counter-sued
into oblivion:

Quite clever of them, though I prefer New Zealand's solution as even
simpler: as a general rule their courts don't normally hear cases for
software patents at all.

But we digress

Nor did you indicate that the majority of GPL software is still GPL v
2 or that the percentage of OSS using GPL is on the decline:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License#Adoption

What I wrote was:

While the GPL and its derivatives are the most popular, there's
also the Apache License, Mozilla License, Python's and PHP's
   unique licenses, and many others.

Providing a breakdown of specific versions and variants (LGPL, AGPL,
etc.) and timeline trends for each is simply beyond the scope of my
interest. Besides, too many of my posts are already too long; it hardly
seems useful for anyone if I were to err on the side of completeness. ;)

If you have feel GPL v2 is a better fit for LiveCode's goals than GPL v3
I suppose you could email Kevin with the business case for that.

Yes, just like there are many political systems - all supposedly for
the betterment 'of the people'. Even in democratic societies the
variations are tremendous - and their success also. And just because a
system succeeds doesn't mean it can't be made better.

>From my own naive perspective such success depends very much on
whether 'libre' is 'inclusive' or 'exclusive'. Where there are 'good
guys' and 'bad guys' then IMO you are only handicapping your own
success. I think the movie Invictus:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1057500/

is a brilliant demonstration of the advantage of eliminating the 'us'
and 'them' attitude. You yourself have stated on this List that those
in charge of GPL, if anyone ever finds a loophole which skirts the
intended path that GPL has chosen to tread then the GPL will be
amended to immediately exclude that loophole.

As I linked previously, and indicated, I tend to agree with Linus
Torvalds that as the GPL has progressed it has become apparent that
it's an 'us' and 'them' kind of license. You offered the success of
Linux as proof of the pudding as to how great GPL is but you failed to
mention that the Linux Kernel is forever held to GPL v 2:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel#GPL_version_3

and this wasn't just Torvalds, but the majority of key contributors
realised that GPL v 3 was not the 'Mandela' approach to a world where
both open and closed software had it's place and both could help each
other achieve greatness they couldn't achieve on their own. You also
failed to mention that Torvalds' Git (now a mainstay of LC) is also
firmly GPL v 2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Git_%28software%29

Nor did you indicate that the majority of GPL software is still GPL v
2 or that the percentage of OSS using GPL is on the decline:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License#Adoption

IMO an indication that whilst the original GPL goal was 'libre', some
started to realise that loophole closing was 'libre' only to those who
were 'white good guys', and it was heading down a more 'us' and 'them'
kind of mentality which was not the 'libre' for developers to choose
$0, $$$, open, closed or mix and match kind of future that Torvalds et
al envisaged would truly benefit everyone.

The reason there are many variations on the 'libre' license, is
because GPL v 3 clearly doesn't get everyone's vote as giving
'everyone' the freedom they are truly looking for in how they write
AND distribute their code. It's an attempt to make a good system
better.

I agree with you, well Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - God is in the
details; you need to read the details and then carefully decide which
license truly gives YOU and EVERYONE ELSE the 'libre' to use and
distribute code.

Or to put it more bluntly, this attitude:

"Richard Stallman and the FSF specifically encourage library-writers
to license under the GPL so that proprietary programs cannot use the
libraries, in an effort to protect the free-software world by giving
it more tools than the proprietary world." -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License#Linking_and_derived_works

strikes me as blatant, upfront, software apartheid.

I prefer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's variant, "God is in the details."

Neither the invention of the GPL nor its selection among those who use
it is in any way accidental.

Our LiveCode community is comprised mostly of people who have decades of
experience using and building exclusively proprietary software.

In our milieu, the "free" in "free software" is often seen with a focus
on price. But it's important to remember that the GPL expresses no
opinion about price at all.

This is a limitation of English, in which "free" refers to both "gratis"
and "libre".

With "free software", the "free" is about "libre", or "freedom", the
explicit freedoms granted in the license to receive source code, to be
able to study it, to modify it, and to share those modifications with
your neighbor.

There are many open source licenses. While the GPL and its derivatives
are the most popular, there's also the Apache License, Mozilla License,
Python's and PHP's unique licenses, and many others. There's even a
WTFPL (see , though be forewarned about the
language you'll find there ).

There are almost as many different open source licenses as there are
proprietary ones. And like proprietary licenses, each has its own
unique terms and conditions.

One of the reasons the GPL has remained so popular with so many projects
is because of the values it represents. When your goal is sharing, the
GPL can be a very good choice because it ensures the sharing will
continue downstream, that no one can hoard the code released under it.

If that reflects your own values and your goals for a project, the GPL
is a widely accepted solution to make that happen for you.

But as mostly proprietary-only developers, many in our community view
the value of code with different goals, mostly monetary and often
specifically with revenues derived from per-user licensing, which
requires the code remain concealed from the recipient of the software.

In my own view, I see no harm in either approach. Both have a useful
place. But they do represent different models of how value is derived.
While relatively few here see sharing source code as more valuable
than being paid to keep it secret, there are large numbers of developers
in other corners of the world with different goals, where the value of
community contributions outweighs potential license fees.

It may be tempting for those who work exclusively in proprietary
software to dismiss the GPL as idealistic, just as some free software
advocates dismiss proprietary software as user-hostile in preventing
users from fixing bugs or adding features they need.

Personally, I see the GPL as a very pragmatic solution when the goal is
proliferation. By ensuring downstream enhancements are shared with the
world community, a software released under GPL can only become ever more
capable.

Consider the Internet that deliver this post to you. Much of the 'Net's
infrastructure is run on truly free software, and most of the routers,
switches, and servers are running Linux. Linux is also at the heart of
80% of smartphones, 65% of tablets, most embedded devices, and 95% of
the world's supercomputers. While Windows continues to dominate the
desktop, every other form of computing today is largely a Linux story.

This would not likely have been possible without the GPL. But by
ensuring that any modifications of the software get shared back to the
community they came from, Linux has become adapted for a much broader
range of use cases than any other OS.

We can hope that over time we'll see similar community-driven
enhancement with LiveCode. And now that v8 is here with Builder, at last
we have a scriptable interface to OS APIs and object definitions
(Widgets). So going forward enhancing the LiveCode experience is no
longer limited to those proficient in C++. Anyone who can script can
extend, modify, and share.

And as a dual-licensed system, LiveCode lets us choose either GPL or
other licenses depending on our goals for the project at hand.

It appears to be in the store under the Mozilla Pubic License. From a press

VLC for iOS is fully open-source. Its code will be available online by tomorrow

the GNU General Public License Version 2 or later. The MPLv2 is applicable for
distribution on the App Store.

VLC and GPL and LC on iOS (was: Re: MergEXT now included with Indy/Business IDE)

2016-05-04 Thread James Hale
In the referenced thread Monte mentioned something about fmpeg and it
associated libraries and licensing.
Today I was notified of an update the VLC and remembered how that is now
available on the App Store.
Looking at Videolan's site, VLC is GPL 2.
How is it that it can be distributed under Apple's terms and conditions and
still be adhering to its GPL terms and conditions?
Leaving the fact that there is a conflict here the more interesting question to
me is why didn't Apple stop it. I know they did pull it when it first came out
for iOS and then a second time but it has been back for a while now. I haven't
been able to find anything on the Videolan's site to suggest their license has
changed so what gives?
Is their wiggle room here for LC community apps to get up on the App Store?

2016-05-04 Thread Monte Goulding
mergAV works on OS X because AVFoundation is very similar on iOS and OS X but
it would be a major project to create similar functionality for the other
platforms. It would probably need to be a separate FFmpeg external and then
that external probably wouldn’t be iOS compatible because of the difficulty
complying with LGPL in iOS externals for LiveCode and then there’s the whole
MPEG LA patent quagmire that I very much doubt LiveCode Ltd would like to step
into.

I believe the goal will be to make them as cross platform as feasible and use
widgets where we can. It may involve some significant API changes. There’s
definitely some things which aren’t available on iOS though. For example,
mergSocial relies on a framework that isn’t there in Android. We can workaround
this by making cross platform Facebook and Twitter externals/extensions but
that’s not a port of mergSocial. Every time this has been raised I have made it
clear that the main thing I needed was a client that felt it was important
enough to their business that things be cross platform that they would pay me
to do it. Well I have that now as it’s clearly critically important to
LiveCode. There was and still are a couple of technical hurdles to jump for
some things like maps on android but we can get there I’m sure.

Having said all that I always saw the role of mergExt to be twofold. Features
that probably shouldn’t be put in the engine to avoid bloating it which may or
may not be cross platform. Things like barcode reading, camera controls & maps
I think fit there. Then there’s things that are OS bling. These might be unique
APIs like the Social framework or Touch ID. I have a little from column A and a
little from column B. Column A should lend itself to porting. To get equity
from column B we might look for more bling from Android and other platforms. I
did this in my Android external experiments in the excellently named
mergPopToast command.

I probably should say though that Kevin’s plans might be different from mine
and he’s directing this show now ;-)

Dear All,

As Monte mentioned on this list yesterday, we are delighted to announce a
very exciting acquisition for LiveCode: we have purchased the full suite of
the invaluable mergEXT externals for iOS. These will shortly be included
with your Indy or Business license purchase. We will also be hiring Monte to
work for us full time. Over time our team will work with Monte over the
course of the coming months to turn the mergEXT suite into integrated
widgets that work cross platform where appropriate.

You can read all about this acquisition here:

https://livecode.com/merging-with-mergext/

You guys don't need to be told just how valuable Monte is going to be to our
team! We can't wait to start working with him.

The addition of mergEXT adds a huge amount of value to the license packages.
We also have a staggering list of new features and benefits coming with
LiveCode 8, in the near, medium and longer term future. We are adjusting our
pricing strategy to account for this added value, incrementally over time.
You can read all about this here:

https://livecode.com/leap-to-future/

Right now, you can still get everything including the mergEXT addons for the
current price of Indy, and you can lock in at that price.

Footnote: For those of you with an Indy or Business license already, we need
to ask for your patience. It is going to take us a little time to drop the
mergEXT suite into your accounts retrospectively. Please don't write to
support to ask why its not there yet, for at least a week! :) We will send
out an announcement when it is all done and you can go look for it in your
account. We are working on that now.

Kind regards,

Kevin

There are a few of open source externals (mergJSON, mergMarkdown, mergContact,
mergDevice). Those that are open source will remain so but there is no plan to
open source the rest which means they are not compatible with LiveCode
Community.

No they need to be included in the app. Currently this is by adding them to the
copy files of the standalone but as soon as we can we will extend the
extensions format to support externals (and I’m hoping other things like
libraries) to give a better experience for all types of extensions not just LCB
based.

That's awesome, congrats Monte and Livecode.

Can you clarify the uses of mergExt? Since mergExt is closed source, does
that mean we just can't use any of those widgets if we want to release open
source, or is there a way to separate them out as some kind of binary
bundle? Can they be used from a web app in support of operations on a
phone, or do they have to be on the phone itself?

mergExt Acquisition

2016-02-18 Thread Kevin Miller

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I am VERY pleased that you intend to make these tools cross-platform. A
dev environment such as LiveCode which is marketed as cross-platform,
should have cross-platform add-ons (I have always said). This will be a
great value for many potential new customers. I have never believed that
any feature could only be possible in iOS. You just need the right people
working on porting the features. They ARE out there.

This gives us an opportunity to acknowledge Monte's other tremendous
contributions to LiveCode as well, including his 166 commits to the code
base he's racked up to date:

Any closer relationship between Monte and the core dev team can only be
a very good thing for all of us who enjoy LiveCode.

At this stage what I’m considering is an additional large archive containing
all externals so you can still download individual files. At the moment I scp a
large archive over to my server and run a script on it to deploy everything
into the right spot. It shouldn’t be overly complicated to extract each of the
external archives and then archive the lot at the end of that script.

A version function is probably feasible (I need to be able to automate changing
the version number from by external builder stack. It’s probably not something
I’ll get to in the very short term though.

I strongly disagree. I'd much rather have control and know exactly which
version I'm using with each application. Admittedly in this case the changes
may be mostly invisible tweaks to accomodate iOS differences, but stuff always
needs testing, and there can easily be unexpected effects.

I'd much rather have to do a small amount of deliberate work upfront when I
want to switch to a new version, than have to spend more time diagnosing
mysterious behaviour when I did it without meaning to. That's especially going
to happen to an app where I haven't done a new build in a while.

My feature request, on the contrary, would be for for Monte to add a standard
"mergVersion" function to every external in the suite, so that we can always
verify exactly what we've got (and so that app error reports, for example, can
include this information by default).

At least for me, I'd take just the blob - consider it a compromise for
getting a blob. The version number could appear in an index, or release
notes, perhaps? Otherwise we might have to do something to the Copy Files
feature in LC. I understand there will be cases where someone will want to
get some sort of warning instead of just installing the latest and
greatest, so maybe the idea can/should be addressed via a different
mechanism.

Re: [ANN] mergExt releases for iOS 9.2

2016-02-10 Thread Monte Goulding
I'll try and add it to my deployment script before the next rebuild for an SDK.
I'm guessing you want the option of either one big blob or just the individual
files. The version numbers are a bit tricker given that at present that is the
only place a version number appears.

Re: [ANN] mergExt releases for iOS 9.2

2016-02-10 Thread Mike Kerner
The other thing that would be nice would be to maybe have the new versions
not be marked with the version number. I realize that can be dangerous,
but for every app, I have to go into Copy Files for every external and
point to the new one. When I forget (especially if I haven't done a new
build in a while), that means at least one "whoops" build.

In fact since I was completely unable to locate the resources for building

Sure but there's obviously licensing issues if you wanted to distribute an app.
For personal and even in-house company use there's no problem though.

Hi LiveCoders

Today I am releasing a huge update to mergExt Complete and announcing a special
price available for the rest of the month.

mergBLE 1.0 - CoreBluetooth external for iOS and OS X. Use BLE between Mac and
iOS or between iOS devices or between some of the great sensors available and
your app. For the arduino hackers out there you will love pairing this external
with the ReadBearLab BLE shield. Control anything from your Mac or iOS
device!!! (Also sold separately for $49).

mergGoogle 1.0 - This external for iOS and OS X currently implements google
spreadsheets. (Also sold separately for $49).

mergMK 3.0 - This update to mergMK supports querying directions between
locations.

iOS 9 support - all the mergExt externals have now been updated for iOS 9
support.

The mergExt Complete bundle now weighs in at a hefty $1038 worth of individual
products for only $299. Yes that’s right folks. We’ve cracked the ton!

Special Price: 3 years of access to mergExt Complete for $499. That’s a huge
$398 saving folks. Use this link to access the special deal

^ Is what the HTML 5 version of LC is. LC compiled as javascript. It won’t help
us here. My gut feeling is just wait for extensions. The recent work done on
the browser widget indicates we will be able to do some really interesting
things with native layers soon.

There is a mention of running C++ in a sandboxed environment here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Native_Client

"An alternative of sorts to NaCl is asm.js, which also allows C and C++
applications to be compiled to run in the browser (at more than half the
native speed), and also supports ahead-of-time compilation, but is a subset
of JavaScript and hence backwards-compatible with browsers that do not
support it directly."

So, perhaps inside a browser object?

Re: [ANN] mergExt: BLE, Google spreadsheets, Map directions, iOS 9 & special price

2015-10-12 Thread Roger Eller
Since you're the brain, and have the rare capability to create the under
the hood magic that so many of us LC consumers need, the best I can do is
Google what you asked for.

This probably is not the thing you need, and I have no idea whether this is
at all helpful, but...

Well if you can point me to a C or C++ sdk I’ll gladly do it and we can have
Windows, Linux and server too. mergGoogle uses an objective-c sdk which is why
it’s iOS & OS X only. Where I’ve been able to use cross platform libraries I’ve
made the externals cross platform too (mergJSON, mergMarkdown). Now of course
mergGoogle is just calling web api so it would be feasible to implement it in
LiveCode. The cost of doing so is obviously a lot higher (both for initial
implementation and ling term maintenance) than hooking up google’s official sdk
which as I mentioned is not available as a cross platform library…

I know I can't be the only LC user that would renew the full suite if
Android was included. Especially for access to the Google api stuff.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record.
