A few early Android tablets have already been shipping direct from several
small shops in Hong Kong. They are not backed by brand names, so support
is very limited. I have tried a couple of them since they are very
inexpensive in comparison with the iPad. I first tried the Eken M001, and
it was made of cheap thin plastic which got very hot near the battery. My
current one has a metal enclosure, but can't be upgraded beyond Android
1.5, which it runs VERY well. I have the iRobot Apad (looks like a half
scale iPad). The iRobot Apad has a 7 resistive touchscreen, so you have to
press slightly harder than on the iPad. Where the iRobot Apad really
shines is playing video and audio media. I got a little case/stand for it
which makes it a joy for watching movies, playing mp3s, listening to
streaming music over wifi. The iRobot Apad has the Google Market app
installed, so it has access to thousands of apps, but again it can only use
the ones compatible with 1.5. Now, there is already a newer model that runs
Android 2.1, and there is a 10 screen version as well. The original
company is at http://hiapad.com/ but I got mine at
http://www.merimobiles.com/ . Sorry for sounding like an infomercial, but
I really do love my Apad. Oh, and the case is super high quality from

is frustrating and disheartening. The iPad has a unique cool factor
with students who would otherwise shun a device for fear of looking
different. It could provide, when paired with runRev, a portable/
programmable environment allowing teachers to adapt curriculum on the
fly while the student is seated among their peers.

Bill, I applaud your efforts in working FOR kids with disabilities. Several
years ago, I had some experience with the AlphaSmart for my own child. I
managed to convince then to allow the use of a pocket WinCE device because
the OS was similar to the classroom PCs, which made the learning curve less
than with the AS. The AS wasn't that bad, but I can see how intuitive
software on touch devices like the iPad and Android tablets will make a
huge difference.

 My question is this;
Is it possible to tether the iPad to a Mac or PC, using Bluetooth or
Wifi (not Internet), located in the same room. Essentially the iPad
would act as a touch interface AND display for the host computer,
respond with little delay and channel any audio through the iPad.

I don't have experience with ipad remote apps but have read that the
logmein app doesn't transmit audio to the iPad.

There are many ports of VNC for most OSs. I don't remember for sure whether
audio is included or not. I know that RDP for Windows can pass through
audio.

It is too bad that developers may have to tip-toe around Apple LAW to
help children, but this is what I see... Rev has stated that Enterprise
customers can develop apps for internal use within their own company. These
apps will not be sold. Therefore, if a school system wants to help kids
with disabilities, they could staff a Rev developer, and maintain an
enterprise license of RevMobile. Am I missing something here?

I just realized this may be over-complicated by thinking you have to use
'software' for audio. If the computer is in the same classroom, why not
just use off-the-shelf wireless headphones with the transmitter connected
to the PC in the room. The rev app will work normally, including audio, but
the display will simply be a remote session on the iPad (uh-umm, or Android

lag, you may need to incorporate an appropriate audio delay in your app to
compensate.

Mark - What's an eeePad? Is it like the eeePC (I have one)? Or is it
another Android device? I definitely want an Android device since that is
where revMobile is going.

Colin - I am not interested in the iPad. Not right now anyway. I appreciate
the tech-spec comparison, but I just need something just good enough to
test Android apps. I do like the look of the iPad, and that is why I
mention the Apad. Because of the similar appearance, it will probably be
very popular with lower income consumers. Therefore Android market share
will increase even more, and that increases the success ratio for revMobile
developers. Even lower income consumers will buy a killer app for 99 cents.

I noticed that one in the FAQ too. This is only one of several suppliers

 Hi all,

I am using this under Vista to identify the currently
 logged in user:

 function getUserName
   local tUser
   set the hideconsolewindows to true
   put shell(set user) into tUser
   set the itemDel to =
repeat for each line theLine in tUser
      if item 1 of theLine=USERNAME
 then
return item 2 to -1 of theLine
      end if
   end repeat
   return tUser
 end getUserName

Is there a simpler way? Can anyone test if this works under
XP and / or WIn 7, even when not logged in with admin
 rights?

 All the best,

Yes, MUCH simpler! :-)

limited to that, a learning exercise, and not be started without first
buying OS X from an Apple retailer. They also state that the resulting
non-apple machine should not be used for any kind of professional work when
running OS X. Depending on the machine, reviews vary about the level of
compatibility, but many hobbyists report that it works better than you
might think. I am in no way suggesting that you consider it because it
would violate the EULA. It makes me wonder however, what would happen if
Microsoft suddenly decided to legally demand that their OS run on anything

web tables 2 rev tables

2009-12-22 Thread Roger . E . Eller

What is the most direct way to convert the data in an html table into data
to fill a 'basic table field' (not a dataGrid)? I have tried stripping
away tags and plucking data from between tabletrtdcell
data/td/tr/table. This is tedious, and I'm sure there must be a
better way.

Thanks.

That's a sweet script Phil!
I only had to change one line because my html table tags included a few

Hey, I just tried this and Windows did not have to re-activate, but there
is still some minor unhappiness which is easily overcome. I can boot
natively and the Apple hardware drivers work in BootCamp, so the machine
runs extremely fast. Then I boot OS X and run Parallels. Everything is
still fine. I shutdown Windows and run VMware Fusion and everything is
still fine. BUT IF I GO BACK TO PARALLELS AFTER FUSION, the Parallels
config files have been corrupted. The easy fix though is to go to the file
menu and choose Remove. Allow it to delete EVERYTHING. Then it walks you
through a fresh setup wizard and you choose BootCamp again. Parallels then
works as expected.

In summary, they can coexist, but VMware Fusion throws a few punches below
the belt (me thinks).

Parallels does provide an additional layer for integration with the host
OS, to support copy-n-paste, drag-n-drop, folder sharing, etc. between
multiple OSes running, but my understanding is that it's somewhat
focused in scope and doesn't have a significant impact on performance of
 most native API calls.

If someone has more complete information on that it would be good to
learn more about the performance differences between the two.

Parallels on an Intel Mac is most definitely virtualization. It is not so
much emulation as was required before Apple switched to Intel CPUs.
However, many devices are still emulated such as video cards. This is why
3D PC games can't deliver the goods unless you boot Windows natively (aka
BootCamp) which accesses the true machine's hardware. BootCamp isn't
virtualizing Windows, but instead is allowing the machine to dual-boot
Windows as a second OS.

Re: EeePC follow-up: working with Rev

2008-08-27 Thread Roger . E . Eller
Hi Chipp,

I too have an EeePC (the 1000h w/10 screen). I absolutely love it The
first thing I did was install Ubuntu (special version modified for tiny
screens). I can boot into XP home or Ubuntu Hardy in less than a minute. I
have Rev installed in both OS's. The greatest thing I added was the leather
cover/case from
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=6971 Everyone
thinks it is a day-timer/planner until I open it and start typing. :-)
Another cool add-on for dual-boot systems is the EXT2FS for Windows. This
allows Windows to see the Linux partition as another drive letter. This
way, I can keep my Rev stacks centralized regardless of which OS that I am
currently running. More info on this add-on is available at
http://www.fs-driver.org/ I know the smaller versions of the Eee may be
too small for Revs Objects menu, but on the 10 screen it fits in the
1024x768 compressed mode. In Ubuntu, only 1024x600 is available and the
bottom of the menu is cut off. You can get around this by rotating the
screen 90 degrees (via built-in software) to click OK. Eventually I hope
the 768 compressed video driver will be supported. Or better yet... if Rev
had an Eee version of the RevGUI.

Chipp Walters wrote:

I don't do any Rev stuff on it, but I still use it a lot. Generally, I
like
to read my email, talk on Skype, check my RSS feeds and do Google Docs
stuff
on it. It works well with GoogleGears and is perfect for working on
during
long plane rides-- as the battery last pretty long when you turn down the
brightness, turn off wireless and audio. Easy to cary even with another
 laptop.

The best part, is you can boot up from OFF and be checking your email in

workable solution for portable net access.

Re: screen keyboard

2008-06-19 Thread Roger . E . Eller
Richmond,

I haven't had a chance to try this, but supposedly with the new support for
vbscript and other languages in 2.9, I would think you could execute a
vbscript to send a keypress. How to move the focus to another app like
Word, etc. I do not know. The 2 line mini script below is pure VB. It will
toggle the NumLock key each time it is run. Outside of Rev, just paste
these 2 lines into a text file named NumLock.vbs, then double-click it.

-- begin vbscript --
set WshShell = CreateObject(WScript.Shell)
WshShell.SendKeys {NUMLOCK}
-- end vbscript --

Has anybody any idea how one would get a keydown signal to
be picked up by both the foremost program (e.g. an RR screen
 keyboard) and another program (e.g. a word-processor)?

Presumably once that is answered the screen keyboard problem
 ceases to be a problem.

 sincerely, Richmond Mathewson.

further enlightened on the proper use of the command. I have setup a
callback field. When I issue a LIST command, all that I get back is the
response 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.

actual list. Is this going into another variable somewhere?

LibURLftpCommand error when port is specified

2007-12-04 Thread Roger . E . Eller
In the 2.8.1 documentation for LibURLftpCommand, it says I can use a
non-standard port. The script will not compile with ANY number specified as
the port, even 21. Any ideas? Is this a bug?

DOCS The port is the port number you want to connect to. If you don't
specify a port, port 21 is used. (On most systems, port 21 is the FTP
port.)

OK, been trying this for a while...

I'd like to start an app, read a short text file (10 lines or so,

 Is this even possible?

Are we certain that this is abnormal behavior? On OS X, /Volumes/util/ is

 Does that work for you?

 Ken Ray
 Sons of Thunder Software, Inc.

It appears to be a good all xplatform script, however the Windows part
suffers from the same problem that my script does.

 put shell(ipconfig /all) into temp
 get matchText(temp,Physical Address[\. ]*: ([A-Z0-9-]*),retVal)

This returns the 'first occurance' of the line containing Physical
Address. There are 5 of these on my system; each with an address. It was
luck of the draw that my wireless connection was first in the list and I
was using wireless when I ran your script. If I switch to wired LAN,
ipconfig still shows the same address for wireless first in the list.

Obtaining the hardware MacAddress ON WINDOWS

2007-05-17 Thread Roger . E . Eller
When you have Parallels or VMware installed on a Windows box, it created
multiple virtual NICs. Each one has its own MacAddress. I want to determine
the MacAddress of the REAL hosts NIC? It isn't in the registry, so how can
this be achieved? I have tried the following, but it returns all 4 NICs,
and you can't tell which one is real (and active):

function getWinMacAddress
  set the hideConsoleWindows to true
put net config rdr into tShellCommand
  put shell(tShellCommand) into tNetInfo
filter tNetInfo with *NetBT_Tcpip* -- last word is MacAddress
put word -1 of line 1 of tNetInfo into tMacAddress
  return tMacAddress
end getWinMacAddress

I need to determine the REAL MacAddress, NOT from within the enclosed

NICs are still visible as if they were real. The results of the shell

which one is real.

Ben, I am sorry that it trashed your setup. Thinking back, I believe we
were running Panther when we tried it. Even though it worked, the cost was
a factor too since we had 100+ users, so we went with MySQL instead.

Even MySQL access via Rev has been broken in versions newer than 2.6.1
(including the latest 2.8.x release candidates), so we haven't moved
foreward. One thing I have determined is that where the Rev MySQL queries
once were NOT case-sensitive for table names, etc., they now ARE. And of
course this breaks existing stacks that were working fine in 2.6.1 (even if
they shouldn't have been).

You can try it for free, but it will only return 3 lines from a query until

Roger Eller [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think you are confusing two different things.

An IDE runs with licensed engine, so the script limits do not apply.
This is why we can use alternative IDEs.

The stand-alone applications or stacks running in the player are
subject to script limits. Were they not, some mischievious person
would release a stack that allows anyone to run any size script,
effectively eliminating a need for buying the license. This would, of
course, kill RR's business.

The limits affect only scripts that are compiled at runtime, when
running not in licensed IDE that is, like the code executed through
do.

Robert

I admit my confusion regarding the conditions of where and why the script
limits exist. I still believe it to be an unnecessary constraining factor
in a developers ability to create dynamic code in their standalones when
law could be used instead to enforce anti-piracy. Certain application types
need this flexibility such as AI. My preference would be either the removal
of the limitation completely or to expand it to 25 lines (or more). It
would still be limiting enough to prevent mischievous persons from stealing
RRs business, yet broad enough that most developers could accomplish their
goals when longer dynamic scripts are really needed.
