They are not backed by brand names, so support is very limited. I have tried a couple of them since they are very inexpensive in comparison with the iPad. I first tried the Eken M001, and it was made of cheap thin plastic which got very hot near the battery. My current one has a metal enclosure, but can't be upgraded beyond Android 1.5, which it runs VERY well. I have the iRobot Apad (looks like a half scale iPad). The iRobot Apad has a 7 resistive touchscreen, so you have to press slightly harder than on the iPad. Where the iRobot Apad really shines is playing video and audio media. I got a little case/stand for it which makes it a joy for watching movies, playing mp3s, listening to streaming music over wifi. The iRobot Apad has the Google Market app installed, so it has access to thousands of apps, but again it can only use the ones compatible with 1.5. My question may have already been answered but I missed it. I am an assistive technology consultant in Pennsylvania and use runRev stacks to support students with disabilities. Apple's locking out revMobile is frustrating and disheartening. The iPad has a unique cool factor with students who would otherwise shun a device for fear of looking different. It could provide, when paired with runRev, a portable/ programmable environment allowing teachers to adapt curriculum on the fly while the student is seated among their peers. Bill, I applaud your efforts in working FOR kids with disabilities. Several years ago, I had some experience with the AlphaSmart for my own child. I managed to convince then to allow the use of a pocket WinCE device because the OS was similar to the classroom PCs, which made the learning curve less than with the AS. The AS wasn't that bad, but I can see how intuitive software on touch devices like the iPad and Android tablets will make a huge difference. My question is this; Is it possible to tether the iPad to a Mac or PC, using Bluetooth or Wifi (not Internet), located in the same room. Essentially the iPad would act as a touch interface AND display for the host computer, respond with little delay and channel any audio through the iPad. I don't have experience with ipad remote apps but have read that the logmein app doesn't transmit audio to the iPad. There are many ports of VNC for most OSs. I don't remember for sure whether audio is included or not. I know that RDP for Windows can pass through audio. Thanks, Bill Sent from my iPad It is too bad that developers may have to tip-toe around Apple LAW to help children, but this is what I see... Rev has stated that Enterprise customers can develop apps for internal use within their own company. These apps will not be sold. Therefore, if a school system wants to help kids with disabilities, they could staff a Rev developer, and maintain an enterprise license of RevMobile. Parallels does provide an additional layer for integration with the host OS, to support copy-n-paste, drag-n-drop, folder sharing, etc. between multiple OSes running, but my understanding is that it's somewhat focused in scope and doesn't have a significant impact on performance of most native API calls. If someone has more complete information on that it would be good to learn more about the performance differences between the two. Parallels on an Intel Mac is most definitely virtualization. It is not so much emulation as was required before Apple switched to Intel CPUs. However, many devices are still emulated such as video cards. This is why 3D PC games can't deliver the goods unless you boot Windows natively (aka BootCamp) which accesses the true machine's hardware. BootCamp isn't virtualizing Windows, but instead is allowing the machine to dual-boot Windows as a second OS. Re: EeePC follow-up: working with Rev
Hi Chipp, I too have an EeePC (the 1000h w/10 screen). I absolutely love it The first thing I did was install Ubuntu (special version modified for tiny screens). I can boot into XP home or Ubuntu Hardy in less than a minute. I have Rev installed in both OS's. The greatest thing I added was the leather cover/case from http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=6971 Everyone thinks it is a day-timer/planner until I open it and start typing. :-) Another cool add-on for dual-boot systems is the EXT2FS for Windows. This allows Windows to see the Linux partition as another drive letter. This way, I can keep my Rev stacks centralized regardless of which OS that I am currently running. More info on this add-on is available at http://www.fs-driver.org/ I know the smaller versions of the Eee may be too small for Revs Objects menu, but on the 10 screen it fits in the 1024x768 compressed mode. In Ubuntu, only 1024x600 is available and the bottom of the menu is cut off. You can get around this by rotating the screen 90 degrees (via built-in software) to click OK. Eventually I hope the 768 compressed video driver will be supported. Or better yet... if Rev had an Eee version of the RevGUI. Chipp Walters wrote: I've got the 701 which is the first version with the very small screen. I don't do any Rev stuff on it, but I still use it a lot. It works well with GoogleGears and is perfect for working on during long plane rides-- as the battery last pretty long when you turn down the brightness, turn off wireless and audio. Easy to cary even with another laptop. The best part, is you can boot up from OFF and be checking your email in under a minute. Do any of Revs competing languages have such a limit imposed on built standalone apps? Roger Eller [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think you are confusing two different things. An IDE runs with licensed engine, so the script limits do not apply. This is why we can use alternative IDEs. The stand-alone applications or stacks running in the player are subject to script limits. Were they not, some mischievious person would release a stack that allows anyone to run any size script, effectively eliminating a need for buying the license. This would, of course, kill RR's business. The limits affect only scripts that are compiled at runtime, when running not in licensed IDE that is, like the code executed through do. Robert I admit my confusion regarding the conditions of where and why the script limits exist. I still believe it to be an unnecessary constraining factor in a developers ability to create dynamic code in their standalones when law could be used instead to enforce anti-piracy. Certain application types need this flexibility such as AI. My preference would be either the removal of the limitation completely or to expand it to 25 lines (or more). It would still be limiting enough to prevent mischievous persons from stealing RRs business, yet broad enough that most developers could accomplish their goals when longer dynamic scripts are really needed.
