Dragonfly used in production

2009-06-19 Thread Haidut
Hi all, Just wanted to let you know that we have deployed in production a cluster of about 50 single-CPU machines running Dragonfly. That's probably Dragonfly's largest production install base at a single location:-) The machines are used as the crawler layer for a search engine. We are not using

Re: Dragonfly used in production

2009-06-19 Thread Haidut
I'd say it's probably both. For some reason the hardware (oldish HP DL380 G2 machines, we are on a budget:-)) work much better with Dragonfly then Debian. The network throughput is much higher with Dragonfly than with Debian and we have not touched anything in terms of throttling. Just basic

Re: SMP question

2008-01-26 Thread Haidut
So is there a quick way to identify those mplock dependence areas? Once that is done, how long do you think it would take an experienced C programmer to fix most of the issues? Like I said in my first email, all I need is a rough estimate - 1 month, 2 months, etc. Assume full-time, 40 hour week.

I think his question is essentially something I'd asked long time ago - how to create a LiveCD from a pre-installed environment. Sort of like the FreeSBIE (FreeBSD), Linux, or NetBSD live CDs floating out there. Basically, you have a running environment with configured applications such as Firefox

Re: How to rebuild LiveCD

2008-01-24 Thread Haidut
OK, that answers part of the question - we can create live CDs. How about the compressed filesystem? Does Dfly have anything similar to SquashFS (Linux) or cloop2 (FreeBSD/NetBSD) so we can cram a lot of software in the 700MB ISO limit? Thanks in advance. On Jan 24, 2008 2:05 PM, Matthew Dillon

2008-01-24 Thread Haidut
I may be starting a flamewar with this question, so I apologize in advance. Some time ago there was a discussion about the status of SMP in Dfly. As far as I can remember, the developers behind Dfly said that the SMP implementation is currently not on their schedule, even though progress was made
