We are using DFBSD in production on a cluster of about 30 servers. The
systems run our web crawling software for our news search engine. We are not
using Hammer yet but are running some tests with it. The project can be

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that we have deployed in production a cluster of
about 50 single-CPU machines running Dragonfly. That's probably Dragonfly's
largest production install base at a single location:-) The machines are
used as the crawler layer for a search engine. We are not using
I'd say it's probably both. For some reason the hardware (oldish HP DL380 G2
machines, we are on a budget:-)) work much better with Dragonfly then
Debian. The network throughput is much higher with Dragonfly than with
Debian and we have not touched anything in terms of throttling. Just basic
So is there a quick way to identify those mplock dependence areas?
Once that is done, how long do you think it would take an experienced
C programmer to fix most of the issues?
Like I said in my first email, all I need is a rough estimate - 1
month, 2 months, etc. Assume full-time, 40 hour week.
I think his question is essentially something I'd asked long time ago
- how to create a LiveCD from a pre-installed environment. Sort of
like the FreeSBIE (FreeBSD), Linux, or NetBSD live CDs floating out
there. Basically, you have a running environment with configured
applications such as Firefox
OK, that answers part of the question - we can create live CDs.
How about the compressed filesystem? Does Dfly have anything similar
to SquashFS (Linux) or cloop2 (FreeBSD/NetBSD) so we can cram a lot of
software in the 700MB ISO limit?
Thanks in advance.

I may be starting a flamewar with this question, so I apologize in advance.
Some time ago there was a discussion about the status of SMP in Dfly.
As far as I can remember, the developers behind Dfly said that the SMP
implementation is currently not on their schedule, even though
progress was made
A few weeks ago I sent an email saying that I'll be doing some
benchmarks of Dfly, other *BSDs, Linux and OpenSolaris. The results
are up on my site if you are interested

Dfly did OK, very close in performance to FreeBSD (which is not
surprising given that Dfly is a
Cool, I'll try NetBSD 3.1 and then upgrade to -current and bench that as well.

Hi all,
I've been planning on doing this for some time and it seems that I
have finally got around to it. Basically the plan is to benchmark
several major Unix-type OSs that are out there by using mostly the
sysbench utility (but suggestions are also welcome). The
participants are:

OK, on FreeBSD these are kernel config option which means that
commenting them out would require recompiling the kernel. Is that true
on Dfly as well or is there another way to disable them?

Thanks.
Any suggestions from the Dfly community on other benchmarking tools
that would run across the OSs I mention in my first email?

Hi all,
I am trying to build a custom Dragonfly live CD and have some
questions. I am basically following the instructions for NetBSD posted
here:
http://wiki.netbsd.se/index.php/How_to_build_your_own_NetBSD_LiveCD
In the article they have Old Way and New Way for building the live
CD. I am not
See my answers below. I just don't have the time right now to write it
into a wiki but if something is better than nothing right:-)

I am currently trying to run some benchmarks for PostgreSQL and MySQL
running on Dfly 1.6.2, PC-BSD (FreeBSD 6.1/6.2), NetBSD 3.1, OpenBSD
4.0, and Linux 2.6.x (Ubuntu). I've yet to find MySQL benchmarking
tools that compile and run on all of the above OS but pgbench for
PostgreSQL runs fine and
Hi,
Has anybody tried compiling and running any of the benchmark tools
available for MySQL or PostgreSQL? I have tried all of them and none
of the tools compiles under Dfly. I tried super-smack, sysbench,
mybench, etc. All tools either failed to compile for some reason.
Bear in mind, by failing
Hi all,
I have a quick question about Dfly binary sets. Most other *BSDs are
distributed both as both ISO files and as separate tgz sets. For
instance i can either download the NetBSD ISO installation file or I
can download the individual base.tgz, etc.tgz, comp.tgz, etc and
decide which one to
Hi all,
Are there any plans to implement the so-called SSH filesystem
currently available in Linux?
It is an extension of the FUSE filesystem and is a very helpful
technology for secure access to remote filesystems since it requires
nothing on the server side except running SSH server.

Hi all,
I am trying to compile a custom kernel and I am following the
inctructions on the Dfly website. However when I run the command make

bash-3.1# make -v buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL
That worked, thank you.

Hi all,
Is there a tool for BSD (preferably Dfly) that is capable of analyzing
firewall ruleset files? I am looking for a tool that can read let's
say Checkpoint .fws files analyze the ruleset for redundancy errors
and give some feedback.
Thanks.
I tried both with packet mode enabled and disabled with the same
results. I will try changing the disk settings to Large or Auto as
others have suggested.
BTW, I used the latest versions of PC-BSD and DesktopBSD and both
produced the same results as Dfly. Since they are nothing more than
cosmetic
things, the bootloader should be the most stable. And
the computer is not that old either. It's a P4 and both Linux and
Windows work on it like charm.
