described only lists the options up to -infilter=filter along with
its description. I suspect that the message window just truncates the
text at some arbitrary value.

 soffice.exe -? | more

The |more option does work when listing help for other types of
commands (such as help |more), but unfortunately it doesn't work in
this case. The main difference in this case is that the help text is
not echoed to the prompt (terminal), but it is rather displayed in a
message pop-up, which truncates (cuts off) the text at some point.

Just for interest's sake, on the Win7 system I'm using (running
LibreOfficePortable 3.3.2), the help options specify single dashes,
not double dashes. Not sure if it is OS or LibO-version specific.

[libreoffice-users] Referring to a value in table in Writer

2011-06-27 Thread Davide Dozza
Hi all,

while it's easy to refer in Writer to a value in a table cell from
another table cell, I've not found any way to refer it from the text
paragraph.

That is I would like to have a field in text directly connected to a
value in a Writer table cell.
Clicking F2 I can insert a formula in text but I cannot use data in tables.

Is there a way to do that?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail merge

2011-06-27 Thread John B

Dear Alex

Thanks for the link, I had no idea of the shear quantity of bugs that
are in the LO Mail merge feature, had I have known I would never have
considered it, especially as there a numerous new ones being reported
and the old ones as you say have been there for years - Mail merge in
essence not only proves to me that it is unusable, but growing in this
arena with others. I would think that greying out this option would be
one answer, but then how would we find the bugs?

It prompts the question does anything work properly and when I mean
properly I mean fully, no bugs, no workarounds, no macro's, no file
editing, no putting one thing in front of another, with full up to date
documentation tutorials etc. - ( my granddads answer to everything
when the revolution comes)

At present I use LO as a MS doc reader / converter for incoming email
attachments, which seems to work very well (but then excluding *.rtf
files) , but I would genuenly like to use LO fully in the future. But
after the horror of that Bug list - the developers have some mountain to
climb.

With word processing, I would have thought that once you get past fonts
and indexing - mailmerge comes next in the pecking order.

One good thing - I know how to access the bug list before I explore LO
further.

Known limitation. Calc Sheets/CSV files are read only when the file is
being accessed by the mailmerge, i.e. being used as a datasource, it has
been like this for years.

3) Merge, then adds all the fields again in bulk to the letter for a
2nd time, so you have to delete all the 1st batch

Seem to recall that this too, is a known bug.

4) I thought maybe it would be better then, to add new contacts to the
csv file in Calc
No problem there - up until you go back to Mail merge.
it corrupts the file in some way (or the 2 are incompatible). All the
1st and last letters of any word are missing, eg, company becomes
ompan and zip becomes i, and it does the same to the data, then
even when you merge you get nonsense data in the fields on the letter.
Henceforth, totally useless.

Also known bug, as far as I can remember.

[libreoffice-users] Segmentation Fault when converting PPT to PDF headless on linus

Hi all,

We are using JODConverter 3.0 beta 3 to convert PPT files to PDF headless on
ubuntu 11.04 and libreoffice 3.3.2.

When processing the attached file we get a segmentation Fault:

Jun 23 16:25:10 ubuntu11dsktp64b kernel: [ 1459.754560]
soffice.bin[1577]: segfault at 40 ip 7fa18b694c05 sp

I tried using libreoffice 3.3.3 from the website with the same result.

The seg fault does not happen when converting the document manually using the
GUI.

I downloaded OpenOffice 3.3.3 and it worked correctly.

I can send sample code for JODConverter if needed.

We would rather use libreOffice, but can't until this is resolved.

Thanks

[libreoffice-users] SubForms and Photographs in LO Base

2011-06-27 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I can REALLY use some help!!

I'm using LO 3.40 on Linux Mint 9 KDE.

I'm trying to re-set-up my Members Database on this platform with a
SubForm to record eMails and Photographs. I had this working, (without
the SubForm), in OO Base but it will not open in LO so am trying to
re-create it.

Will the SubForm be a part of the main Form or will it come up over the
top of the Main Form with a button? If the latter how do you do this Button?

The main question however is 'How do you do SubForms?' I have gone
through all the Forums and Googled for details and the more I dig the
more confused I get!! AND nothing seems to work and different answers
seem to contradict each other.

Can anyone give me straight forward step-by-step instructions please? I
have my main 'Contacts Table' and an 'eMail Table' and a Main Form
called 'Contacts'. I have set the Master Key called ID to be the link.
But that's as far as I get.

Photographic question - I have read that LO keeps all it's records in
memory when you open it so if you have large records this slows the
whole thing down (just what is happening to me!!). Each of my records
has three graphics, a 'Status Marker' and two thumbnail Photos. Then I
came across an article to LINK to the photos on the Database rather
than to include them, (which is the default).

This seems like a good direction to go in because it will cut down the
size of each record and would give me the added benefit of automatically
being able to update the photos on-the-fly by just over-writing the
photo in the folder with a new one which the DB will fetch next time you
open it!!

But again same situation as above. All the answers I find on the net
seem contradictery.

Again has anyone got clear step-by-step instructions for this.

Also are there any downsides to doing this?

Thanks in advance

 just fill them in there.

How exactly do you do that? I tried to find something about this in
 the documentation without success.

Someone pointed out elsewhere in this thread, but it's a big thread
and easy to miss. To insert the variables, just go to INSERT FIELDS
OTHER (or just hit CTRL-F2). Then click on the Variables tab,
highlight User Field in the left column, give your variable a name
(no spaces!), give it a value, and hit Insert. After that, if you
want to insert the variable you can go through the same process
(except you can just click on the name of the variable from the
Selection list and hit Insert) or you can copy/paste the variable
from elsewhere. Then, any time you double-click on the variable
anywhere in the document and change the value, it changes it
throughout the document.

It's a HUGE time-saver at my office!

If you are trying to do this from within LibreOffice use the
Alternative Find and Replace for Writer Plugin.

There is an option to remove HTML tags.

You can also google html tag removal using bash and Python. Both work.

yes. Disconnect temporarily from the internet (i. e. remove the cable from your

Once done, activate your anti-virus-software again and connect to the internet.

This should do the trick.

you could try removing the not needed printer with spadmin

On my system you can find this program in

So my guess would be, that it is in a similar place for Debian.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and printers

Hi.

I think that it isn't a LibreOffice problem. Probably you made a printer
from Printer Debian Feature (Menu-Printer). In this case you have to
eliminate the printer from there and check the other as default. It is
because as my experience, LibreOffice use this cups to get the available
printers installed in Operative System. If you keep both installed,
and tp1 as default, LibreOffice gets it as a first option.

[libreoffice-users] RTF support

2011-06-27 Thread tracey002
I had discovered that Open Office Writer does NOT really support functional
RTF features (the ones that I tried anyway).
When I posted issues to an OpenOffice Users Group, I was re-directed to
Libre Office.
Can I help in some way?
Please advise.
Thanks, Tracey
As an End User, my experience has been to export (Documents and/or Data) in
simple HTML or RTF text format for other End Users to use in their word
Processor or Spreadsheet.

It's an extremely crippled RTF specification to be sure. If RTF is what
you really need you would be much better off looking at either AbiWord
or KWord.

I don't have experience with RTF myself, so I can't say myself how good
is it.

But LibO has a rewritten RTF export, I guess it includes what Miklos
Vajna did in Summer 2010.

Miklos made a presentation about it, slides are at

  http://people.freedesktop.org/~vmiklos/2010/lo-opensuse-nurnberg-2010.pdf

Starting at slide 14 there are several screenshots of export
enhancements.

This Summer, Miklos is working on RTF import,

  http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/project/google/gsoc2011/vmiklos/9001

There are also a couple posts on RTF export issues in Miklos' weblog,

  http://vmiklos.hu/blog/tags/libreoffice

Meanwhile, you can fill bug reports, if there's none yet, for the
features that aren't working,

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and printers

Hello Sigrid,
Thanks for the hint, spadmin (under the same path in debian) only shows tp0. It
seems to work on printers defined in /etc/cups/cups.conf. I suspect there must
be some
other place where LibreOffice looks for its printers.

Some time ago I had to install another printer instead of my original one.
This printer was then listed under tp1 (the first one being tp0).
Now I have got my original printer back (from repair!) and have eliminated
the second one in the respective .cfg-files of cups and turboprint. However ,
when I print something under LibreOffice, it still offers me BOTH printers
as a choice. But, ofcourse tp1 doesn't really exist anymore. How do I
eliminate it under LibreOffice.
This is certainly only a cosmetic issue, but I would still be interested
in understanding it. Thanks

you could try removing the not needed printer with spadmin

On my system you can find this program in
/opt/libreoffice/program/spadmin

So my guess would be, that it is in a similar place for Debian.

It says Are You Sure for HTML too. It is not that it has checked the

Try FILESAVE AS and select RTF as the file type. You will get a dialog
box asking if you are sure. I do not know the which version of RTF LO
fully supports currently. The last version released is 1.9.1.

My understanding is this will be the last release of the RTF standard by
MS. Depending on what you other users have, their software may not
support the current version.

LO is a fork from OOo and is a separate project from OOo. This occurred
when Oracle bought Sun. LO is a project of The Document Foundation and
Open Office is now is a project of the Apache Foundation. At the present
time there are many similarities between us and OOo

Not so far. Sorry for the delay for got to watch this email for responses.
I checked the MD5 on my download an that is fine.
I have tried repair but that did not change anything.
I did a new install over the top and it started calc once but not again.
I did an uninstall (twice) and re-install. One allowed me to start calc then
writer but then it was back to recovery. The other time it was straight to
recovery.

I am downloading 3.4.0

Stephan: You could also try to bypass the recovery process. In a command
interface (Start - Run - cmd), try the following:
soffice -norestore

Stephan: It might be necessary navigate to the directory where soffice
resides
(if there is no environment set) before you try the above command, but
I'm really not sure. I haven't personally tried it, but from what I
read it should skip the recovery process, which seems to be giving you
some trouble.

That works. Thanks.
Once I started writer that way the other shortcuts (calc etc) worked too.
Once I shut writer the normal shortcuts went back to recovery.

I think there must be a recovery trigger file or registry setting that is
causing the restore to trigger. Any thoughts on that?
