Hallo Andreas,

thank you for your short practical guide how to use a .dbf for serial letters.
I spent a lot of time fiddling around reading books etc. and couldnt come up
with a result. With your advice LO did what I want within some minutes. I
never understood what .odb is for: Its a simple container for a table etc.

so long

Could you be a bit more specific please. What type of application, why, to

[libreoffice-users] Printint to PocketMod layout

2012-04-23 Thread BKh
Is there any way to print a document into the PocketMod booklet layout?

Here is more information on pocketmod...
http://www.pocketmod.com

And folding instructions that show the layout needed:
http://www.pocketmod.com/howto/

The layout photo above would probably be more clear if B and F (standing
for back and front) were Numbered 1 and 8 respectively. But you get the
idea.

I can figure out how to get 8 up on a page, but not to have the order and
orientation be as it is shown above.

Any thoughts? Could a plug-in do this?

If you happen to use Linux, you can use psutils (psnup and psbook) to print
such nice booklets. According to Google, there seems to be also a Windows

If it can be done with LibreOffice, I don't know. But you can export to pdf

What is a PocketMod booklet ?
What are the page dimensions?

Are you asking about a package/extension that will print out multiple
sheets that have two pages on each side of a duplexed sheet of paper,
and printing the document where the pages will have the proper placement
if you printed out the document, staples it, and fold it over?

How many pages or page faces are you printing? 10, 20, 30?

I just printed a 34 page document to the CUPs-PDF driver [instead of
export to PDF]. I checked the brochure option and it printed out the
pages in the proper order for printing a stack and folding it after you
place a staple in it.

It seemed to print out the pages in the correct order.

SO, if you want 4 face pages per sheet, 2 pages per side of the sheet,
then you the brochure option in Page Layout. It works for me.

Ah, you mean clickable links in Base that might actually do something
useful ;-)

Well, you won't find anything out of the box, you would have to code it
using a script, e.g. LO Basic. use cURL to take the name of the file
then pass it to the shell command - I had read somewhere a while ago
though that this didn't actually work anymore. Anyway you're going to
have to experiment with Basic or some other supported scripting language
if you want to do that.

What is a PocketMod booklet ?
  What are the page dimensions?

If you click on this link (from the original post) the photo will show
the layout far better than I could possibly explain.

http://www.pocketmod.com/howto/

In case you don't have access to the internet, the lay out is this:
Eight pages, on one side of the sheet. The sheet is in landscape, but
the pages are portrait. Nothing is on the back of the sheet. Going
clockwise from the top left page the order is: 5, 6, B, F, (then upside
down) 1, 2, 3, 4. F is the front cover and B is the back cover.

I think it is best just to look at the link to see the photo. When the
book is folded the reverse side of the sheet is completely inside the book.

You may also want to watch this video on how to fold:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAb31rIeGZo

Are you asking about a package/extension that will print out multiple
sheets that have two pages on each side of a duplexed sheet of paper,
and printing the document where the pages will have the proper placement
if you printed out the document, staples it, and fold it over?

Well, yes I would like an extension, but not two per side as you
explain. I would like the layout shown in the link.

Did you try with Menu/File/Print/Print layout [tab] - brochure?.
Yes, but it will not give the order and orientation in the PocketMod style.

Sorry, I don't know anything about Base - but in Writer you just insert a
Hyperlink, chose Document and enter a Document URL. If the document has
a
extension/MIMEtype/whatever which is known to the system, the default app

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Printint to PocketMod layout

On 04/23/2012 10:51 AM, BKh wrote:

I never have seen something like this, except a card you make by folding
the paper in half and half again. Never seen an 8 face folded booklet
before. The up-side-down 4 sections is the hard part. I do not think
an extension would be easy to create to do this formatting and text
rotation.

Can you do it with Legal size paper? That would give you a larger face
page for each section.

[easiest solution - I can think of]
Now that I see the image from the URL, I would use a 3 stage printing.
That is the easiest way I can think of.

   1]
I would take a landscape page and make the bottom margin at the 5.75
inch mark and then make the top, and side margin 1/4 inch. Then I
would use the FormatPageColumns option to create 4 columns and
make the space between columns 1/2 inch [double the margin width if
you cannot do 1/4 inch margins].

   2]
Then I would print out the document one page at a time. Print the
   top 1-4 sections.

   3]
Then I would realign the paper in the printer so sections 5-6, B, F
   would print out.

That may be the easiest was to do this. There are other ways, like
frames with text rotated, etc., but if all you need is a printer run and
not a PDF copy of the sheet, then this would be the best.

[creating a PDF form that printout]

If you needed a PDF sheet, then you would take the printed sheet and
scan it in as an image and insert that image into a page with Draw
or Writer, then export it to PDF.

There is a Web Based old version app the creator has made for people

I would not think about anyone having an extension for it since the web

[libreoffice-users] Windows - Lost my new file entries

Hi Guys,

Got a small semi-cosmetic issue, and I have absolutely no idea how it
happened. I did have OOo installed, and deinstalled while I kept LO, and
I noticed this afterwards - no clue if that's got something to do with it.

Anyway, I am a big user of the right-click - New - (File type)
functionality in Windows. However, my LO/OOo entries disappeared completely.

Since I have no idea how it happened, I figured simply re-installing LO
should do the trick.

Now I have entries for presentation and Drawing - in german - but not
for the others.

Is there any easy way to fix this without a lot of manual registry work?

Thanks Best wishes

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/database-td3926217i20.html#a3928210
This mail belongs to thread Problems importing an OO database into LO by
ptoye

I'm sorry to disagree. Except for the embedded HSQLDB type of database,
Bases files do not contain any tables.
You always _connect_ some Base file to some database, spreadsheet, csv file,
to the address book of some email application. Then you can see the tables
of the connected data source. The tables are in some other file or
directory. In case of dBase you connect a Base document to a directory of
.dbf files. When you edit the data in the Base document or in Writer's data
source window, the connected .dbf file(s) will be modified, the Base
document remains untouched.
Normally you create the data source with some other software and connect a
Base document to it in order to user these data in office documents. The
status bar indicates the type and the location of the connected data source.
When Base creates a new database with new tables from scratch, the .odb file
carries the data source in the .odb. The status bar shows embedded HSQLDB.
This topic deals with this embedded HSQLDB, why it should not be used
(except for demos and learning stuff), how to get such a database out of the
.odb so it can be used as an external database with better database
software, why Base never reached the status of a mature database
application, why it is extremely useful anyway, how to use Base in in other
ways than documented ...

[libreoffice-users] [3.5.2.2 localc] Leaving blank space in a stock chart?

2012-04-23 Thread walt
Hi list.

The upgrade from 3.4 to 3.5 caused a major PITA for me because of a
regression (IMO) in the chart2 module, I'm looking for a workaround.

I leave a few extra empty spots at the end of stock charts because
every day I add today's data at the end of the spreadsheet, and I
don't want to edit the Data Range every day just to make today's
data visible on the chart. That gets old really fast.

So, first, is there an easier way to do the same thing? If not,
I'd like to change the behavior of the chart2 code to allow the
blank space at the end of the chart, the way 3.4.x did.

I've grepped through the chart2 code of both versions, trying to
spot where the change occurred, but so far I'm missing it.

Any hints would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

May I ask what you are you doing that needs this type of printed
document? I never saw that type of printed document before, so it would
be nice to know what you are using it for.

As I stated earlier, the printing half of the pages at a time, is the
only easy way to do what you need without some type of external
package or extension.

Since the PocketMod layout seems to be a specific Patent Pending style
of booklet. The possible rarity of that format and the Patent
Pending issue might make it very hard to support the decision to create
an extension or external package filter.

various sizes. But I am interested in this very specific method
mentioned in the original post that uses a single side of paper, 8 pages
and no fastener. It's true that the website I linked to has software to
make this conversion from a PDF, but it's not as flexible as I want and
it seemed like it would be possible in LibreOffice.

Thank you all very sincerely for all the suggestions. You have given me
some things to consider.

May I ask what you are you doing that needs this type of printed
document? I never saw that type of printed document before, so it would
be nice to know what you are using it for.
I am using it to create booklets like the ones that appear on this site:
http://www.how-to-pray-the-rosary-everyday.com/rosary-booklets.html
Although the ones I am making are for Buddhist practice, not Catholic.

It is actually very popular with people who are using an analog form of
the GTD(Getting Things Done) method. And if you are into DIY publishing,
they are rather nifty.

As I stated earlier, the printing half of the pages at a time, is the
only easy way to do what you need without some type of external
 package or extension.
Thank you. I realize that I could do exactly what I want if I used desk
top publishing software. But it seems so close to being possible in
LibreOffice, I thought I would ask.
Since the PocketMod layout seems to be a specific Patent Pending style
of booklet. The possible rarity of that format and the Patent
Pending issue might make it very hard to support the decision to create
an extension or external package filter.
It's hard to imagine that it will be possible to patent a way of folding
a piece of paper into a booklet.

Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions.

Thanks Jean.

I checked the web site and Lulu states it is currently $19.36, which is
30% off.

Also, I like the cover design.

Any idea when the Writer's Guide will be ready at Lulu? The Writer's
Guide Full Book was created on April 5th, but the Getting Started
Guide Full Book was dated April 22nd. So GS went to Lulu the same day,
but WG has been out for over 2 weeks, but no listing on the Wiki for the
link for the 3.4.x Lulu print-on-demand service.

I like that fact that the Getting Started and the Writer's Guides are
based on 3.4.6. That is the version I use. Impress chapters now had a
version number along with the date. Chapters 1-5 state v3.4, while
6-8 show v3.5, with 9-11 and A having no updated listed on the Wiki
page yet. I wonder how the documentation people with state these
chapters are deal with 3.4.x and these deal with 3.5.x?

Oh well, it is their problem, not mine.

The thing I do not think will be easy is the up-side-town text for 5,
6, F, B section of the page. The desktop publishing software I use to
use, would not make it easy at all, but major head-scratching and
cursing to get a proper flowing text between sections.

I like the Rosary booklet idea. Some of the ladies in this apartment
tower would want copies for themselves and their friends.

Creating the 4 column half-height landscaped pages printed one way and
then the other, is east to do with LibreOffice. It is as easy as
printing duplexed printing with a non-duplex laser printer. One side at
a time. It was faster that way even though my b/w laser printer prints
duplex.

Thanks!

If you happen to use Linux, you can use psutils (psnup and psbook) to
 print
such nice booklets. According to Google, there seems to be also a
 Windows
version, but I did not try it.

If it can be done with LibreOffice, I don't know. But you can export
 to pdf
and than print with Acrobat Reader (at least I think it's possible).

 Regards,

Did you try with Menu/File/Print/Print layout [tab] - brochure?.

Sorry, I don't know anything about Base - but in Writer you just insert a
Hyperlink, chose Document and enter a Document URL. If the document
  has a
extension/MIMEtype/whatever which is known to the system, the default app
  will
open the document. That's at least how it works here.

As I said, I don't see a type for URL other than text. But, it looks like
I could implement a macro or I also see there is some sort of python link in
OL. I don't know much about how to write OL macros, but on briefly looking,
it looks like it is too hard.

Anyone know if python integration is supported well?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Hello rainflakes,

Sure, python is supported as a scripting language in LibreOffice.

I put together an example file from some questions on the list regarding
storing relative paths for images along with some a basic script,
embedded in an odb file just the other day.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Linkme.odb

So - I went back into that and added a button on the form there, lower
right of the image control.

And added two procedures to the basic library embedded in the odb file,
one which is called for button execute (click or keyboard shortcut [if I
had set one]) and this calls a doEdit procedure.

Also added a new table called config, which has a field GraphicEditor,
in which I store the value currently of gimp this works for me under
linux and windows but perhaps others under windows would want to edit
that to mspaint or whatever is appropriate.

Anyway - I choose in that script to store URLs so the script, you will
if you look, uses the convertFromURL to grab the file name passed. If
you wanted to add options to the command you would that also in the
config.GraphicEditor field - or at least that is how I would do it.
