[libreoffice-users] looking for sdw-compatible, Linux version of Libre Office
Greetings, I need to convert some old starwriter files (.sdw, sdd, .sdc extensions) I understand the solution consists of temporarily installing (or running off an usb key) the last version of LO that supported those formats. However, the only such version I have found so far is the one for Windows at http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/3.3.4.1/portable/ That version only works through wine, which is annoying but bearable for a one-time task, but above all doesn't work. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO 4.1.3
Hi :) I think the example might not have been a good one but the point was valid. There are a ton of features that almost no-one will ever use and some that almost no-one would miss. On the other hand sometimes people stumble onto a feature they would never have thought about and from then on find it immensely useful. With MS Office it's been postulated that around 80% of the features almost never get used. Of the remaining 20% some never gets used by some people and other parts never (or rarely) get used by others. I'm not sure if there has been a formal study to prove it or to get precise percentages. From what i see around me in most offices i would say that it's more like 95% never gets used until people have been on training courses and maybe start making more use of less obvious features. I am not sure what the percentages would be for LibreOffice or OpenOffice but the idea of having Extensions to keep obscure functionality available but out of the way of most people seems a brilliant way of handling it and enables companies to have their special in-house extras less tied to a single instance of a single program. Hmmm, all this is wy off-topic for this thread though! Having to have access to a word count option could really help. We pay you for 3,500 words and you give up 3,450 - not good, not good. Of course then you use the word count to help with the final book size. An average of 300 words per page for a hard cover and between 260 and 350 pages in the book is a good guide, but having a true word count would be better. Your manuscript almost never will have the same page, paragraph, and text formating as the finalized book from the publisher. Having every tool that helps you write in the format and the size that you editor and publisher wants/needs can be very important for a beginning author. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: saving documents written in Thai
Part of this Font FAQ was discussed in another thread. It would be a very good idea to have the language settings information, and the associated fonts, listed in a wiki page [for now] so our users who use both Latin and non-Latin based languages would have an easier time setting up their package for those languages. There was a discussion of adding more fonts to the install of LO. It was suggested that there could be a section/page[s] somewhere showing a list of good free fonts that has the needed languages and how to use them [i.e. set up to use them] with LO to write documents in those languages. There are many fonts out there that work well for Thai and other non-Latin based writings, but sometimes it may be difficult for our users to find the proper fonts and set up LO to use them for their documents. Having a list of free fonts and the languages they support [graph or table] could be very helpful to some of our users. Also, having an explanation on how to set up the language options in LO would be a very good idea at the top of such a list of fonts. This thread seems to indicate that more work in needed to make the setup of different non-Latin based languages within an LO install is needed. How do I get my document to work with the language and be about to edit and print the document correctly using that language. Having the list of fonts that include the Thai language scripts/glyphs hopefully was helpful to the user. If we could expand the list into some type of table where the rows are the free fonts [maybe paid one that came with the OS] and the columns are the languages supported within the fonts, it may help guide our user to which fonts work well for which languages. If you are a English and French speaking person that is learning a non-Latin based language, having a list of fonts that support that language is a needed item. To be honest, I do not use any other language but my native English. But if we get LO in schools/colleges, the students will need to use LO to write in other Latin and non-Latin based languages, while using English for the menus. Having both simple and detailed information on how to set up LO to support all of these languages would be very helpful. Having a documentation, like the solution in this thread, showing the user how to set up a non-Latin based language to be used by the user can be very important to the user. It seems that the current documentation may not be where it is needed, if this thread is any indication. But we can always make it better within the wiki page environment. The next two sections (Asian text font and CTL font) are key to understand what's going on. If your base font (the one listed in the top section) is NOT a Unicode font, or if it is a Unicode font that doesn't contain Thai characters, you will see the font that LibreOffice - in a not always successful attempt to be helpful - uses as substitutes when you type in a particular character. What happens, therefore, is that Libre Writer gives you the impression that all is wonderful even though it is doing substitutions behind your back. In itself a good thing, but sometimes leads to confusion. It also isn't very clear that Asian text font is NOT what you use for your Thai substitutions. Aside from the fact that Thai is actually an Indo-European language, the Asian text font section seems to be only applicable to languages that use ideographs (i.e. little pictures) even if they have alphabetic characters. It also relates to languages that are written vertically, although I'm not too sure about that as I don't speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese and similar languages. Now look at the CTL font section. What you want to do is to pick a font that you know supports Thai, and choose it in the CTL font section as a substitute. The font is listed first, then the size stuff, and then under Language, you would choose Thai to indicate which group of characters within the font are to be used. A CTL font is what's used for substitutions when you are using an Input Method to type on the keyboard. Since there are several of these in use it's hard to tell you anything specific, but you've probably already solved that, since I presume you do some typing in English, hit some switch command, type a little Thai, then use the switch command to get back to English. By the way, the default you will often see under CTL font is one of the Hindi fonts (I presume because of Thai's ancient relation to Indian languages) - in Ubuntu, for instance, it is almost always Lohit Hindi - a font that is part of the Ubuntu installation. I used Format | Character as an example to make the explanation more clear; obviously there are similar settings in various Paragraph and Style settings as well, and they all work the same. BUT - if you want to make things really simple, you could simply use a font that has both English and Thai characters present, so no substitutions need to take place. Unfortunately there isn't a great variety of really good looking fonts (I'll list some below), but the advantage is that there are no substitutions, and the font sizes are matched more closely than would be the case with two different fonts. This is a matter of taste of course, particularly with balancing Thai and English, since Thai nees room above and below the characters for the various superscript and subscript vowels, tone marks, and such things. (these same issues are not unique to Thai of course - you'll run into them in both Hebrew and Arabic for instance). So, here are my (so far) favorite combination fonts for easily mixing Thai and English in the same document: Free Serif (Serif) Gentium Basic (Serif) xxx Gentium Book (Serif) xxx Norasi (Serif) Kinnari (Serif) Linux Libertine (developed for Linux, but works in Win) Linux Biolinium (ditto) Sawasdee (go figure...) (light Sans Serif) Droid Sans Thai (Sans Serif) Garuda (Sans Serif) Loma (Sans Serif) Umpush (Sans Serif) Waree (Sans Serif) Purisa (informal handwriting style) Tlwg Typist (mono typewriter) Obviously if there are others who use both Thai and English, I'd be interested in any of your favorite fonts. As for moving your document to other machines, Libre Office now has the ability in some versions to embed the fonts in the document file itself, but I'm not sure if all versions and all platforms can utilize the embedded fonts yet. (can anyone help here???) I hope this helps you in your search. -- Frank Many thanks for your reply. At last someone who knows

Re: [libreoffice-users] help
Hi Markus Sorry to hear that you are having problems with LibreOffice. There are quite a few issues surrounding combo boxes, list boxes and pop up buttons in LibreOffice. Even though the program has had some great improvements in the last year issues with list boxes and pop up buttons still remain to be fixed. I will try to guide you through a few steps in a hope that you at least can get something exported. I suppose it is the odt2braille extension your talking about? Go to File - Export to braille Press tab three times to get to the first pop-up button Press the down arrow twice to select PEF format (sorry VoiceOver does not announce anything but the PEF is last). At least for me the extension seems to save my last setting. Also note that PEF seems to be the only of the three available choices that disables the next pop-up button so if pressing tab takes you to a check box then you have selected the correct format. The rest of the settings in this dialog should be accessible from the VoiceOver-cursor. Let us know if you can make it work. I'm getting some exception with liblouisxml that I haven't looked into but that might be something with my specific setup. Let's hope that the improvements to Windows accessibility, that is currently going on within the project, will rub off on the accessibility improvements for other platforms as well. Of course it is like Virgil said there is no space before the text whereas Word ads 0,07 both to the left and the right of the text. You can easily mimic that distance by modifying the Default Style to add an Indent Before/After text of 0,07. Could you create a simple label document and mail it to me directly? Just so that I can check if you do not get different measurements the me. Sorry for not being able to get back to you sooner. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO 4.1.3
If you want to try 4.0.6 first, since you jumped from 3.6.x, it might be a good idea. It is at the end on that line and I use it all of the time. Sure, you can try 4.1.4 when it comes out, but 4.0.6 is very stable and you can use it as a stepping stone to the 4.1.x line. The messages about 4.1.3 being too buggy for you [or others] suggests going to 4.0.6 and not going back down to the 3.6.x line. Later, when all of the possible problems with 4.1.4 comes in, you can decide if it is ready for you to use. Still, personally, I would try 4.0.6, for now. Then look into 4.1.4 or 4.1.5 later. Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail Merge and Labels
About 5 or 6 years ago when using OpenOffice to print Christmas labels, I ran across an article about using table style labels in OpenOffice instead of the type which come with Word, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice. It is far easier to adjust the table style labels. To adjust the top spacing, simply adjust the top margin for the page. To adjust the column width, simply drag the column borders and the entire column is adjusted. At one time OpenOffice had these label templates available as an extension. I don't know if they still do or not. But they are available from World Label here: http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-template.htm They can be downloaded individually, or all together as a pdf. I've found them much easier to use and adjust, and have never used any other label templates since then. Also, when you enter the text or fields in them, the text is starts with being paced in the center of the label between the top and the bottom, and then as additional lines are added, the text of fields are automatically centered within the label itself, top to bottom. I've never used the standard templates with OpenOffice or LibreOffice since finding these. Nor have I wasted any sheets of labels because they didn't print properly. Don, Thank you for this. I knew I had seen something like that before. LO uses a frame based label template. I agree that a table based template makes far more sense. Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail Merge and Labels
Hi Virgil, They have really worked well for me. With the frame based templates, I always had trouble with the spacing on the labels changing as you would get into the bottom third of the label sheet. The frame based templates print out perfectly from top to bottom, and they are so easy to adjust. I've left similar posts when people have had issues before, but it seems very few are willing to try the table based formats. Maybe they try to use the wizard, which is not the way to set up a table based template. Don On 12/16/2013 08:11 PM, Virgil Arrington wrote: Don, Thank you for this. Thanks for your input. Indeed it does not work, as we found out. We now convert to ODS flat XML before extracting the data. It seems to be much more reliable.
