Re: [libreoffice-users] need help off list on a Asus Win10/Ubuntu laptop

2017-08-14 Thread gordon cooper

Tim,

Not sure if this would help on Win 10, but maybe worth a
try. I gave up on new MS versions not long after XP, but still
work on a few multi-boot systems and run into Grub issues.

The cure used here is to set up and adjust partitions with
Gparted (on a CD) , then run Puppy Linux (also on a CD) to remake
Grub with the grub4dos utility. Has the advantage that the
resultant Grub menu is much more readable.

If the Windows partition size needs to be changed, then Defrag
is run before Gparted.

Gordon

Possibly my increased line length is related to this bug
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103322 and
introduction of HarfBuzz in 5.3.
Sometimes finding a bug comes down to chancing upon suitable terminology

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Font rendering

2017-08-14 Thread Steve Edmonds

Thanks Stuart.
I copy the same font package for the fonts I use across machines to
ensure consistency, I first noticed a variation between mac and Linux
but that was solved when I copied my Linux version of the font to the
mac and I now ensure the same package is used on all machines. This may
have been a side effect of the work done, but If the changes are looking
settled I will adjust my documents when I revise them.

My issue now is one of line length increased in 5.3.3 causing additional
wrapping, not inter-line spacing issues.

The ASUS laptop has more trouble allowing USB booting than it does to
get the CD/DVD drive to boot.

This laptop is the only one that has this constant problem and needs
specific arrangement of partition types to get it working. I think it
may be both the laptop BIOS and the 1 TB drive. The laptop I use for
emailing is the next largest drive - 500 GB, and does not give me
little issues in this department.

[libreoffice-users] Font rendering

2017-08-14 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
Was there a change in font rendering between 5.2.7 and 5.3.3.
The lines of text in 5.3 are now slightly longer in a document created
in 5.2.7 and I get text re-flowing upsetting my layout. Is this
something that should be stable in future releases and I just have to
fix up once or likely to change again in the next release.

You mean, that you do not have the underlying data?

In that case, you can use the scan directly.

Or in case the scan is too ugly, you have to read the scan and enter the
coordinates as data in the table. From the image I guess, that five
points are sufficient. You need an XY-chart, because otherwise the years
are not at the ticks but between the ticks.

Generate the chart in Calc. Uncheck the option to use "Source Format" in
the Numbers tab of the axis properties dialog. That makes it easier to
copy the chart to Writer.

Yes, you can redraw the graph, but you might learn a little bit about
making a chart.

Kind regards
Regina

The only way I know to do this in LibreOffice *or* MS Office is to
enter the values in a spreadsheet, create the graph, then link the
graph to the word processor.

If one obtains high-quality scans of the graphs and saves them as
images, they could be inserted as images, but that wouldn't be
redrawing the graphs.

[libreoffice-users] Invitation to participate in an usability test for LibreOffice Writer

2017-08-14 Thread Amazing Doppler
Dear users,

I want to remind all of you that the survey of the usability research with
LibreOffice Writer for my project degree wil last until August 21st.
I am very grateful to the users who wrote their email address to
participate in the next phase of the research and with those who just
completed the survey for their feedback.
Here, the original text of the invitation:

Dear Users

My name is Roberto Pizarro Mendoza. I am currently researching for my
Information Technology graduation project titled “Integration of Adapted
Usability Techniques in LibreOffice Writer Open Source Software Project” at
the Autonomous University of Madrid, with the knowing of some experts
developers and designers from the LibreOffice community, like Samuel
Mehrbrodt, Michael Stahl or Heiko Tietze.

As users of LibreOffice Writter, you will probably have noticed that some
features are not easy, fast and accessible to use. This research aims to
provide empirical evidence to resolve some usability issues with which the
LibreOffice Writer community is unfamiliar. To be able to do this, we need
your help. We would like you to respond to a survey in order to identify
the characteristics of the possible LibreOffice Writer user profiles.

If you would like to collaborate, please send me your e-mail address. At
the end of the survey, the responses will be analysed. The results of this
analysis will be shared with the LibreOffice developer community to improve
the LibreOffice Writer user experience.

The survey is anonymous and will take no longer than 12 minutes to
complete. We would very much appreciate it if you would take the time to
complete the survey. Thank you very much in advance.

This would be more appropriate to ask on an Ubuntu list or forum rather
