Re: [libreoffice-users] undo functionality

If you lose work because of limited undo then there is something wrong with
your method of working.
Anyhow, go into *Options -> LibreOffice -> Memory* and raise the *Undo
number of steps*.

Then try 5.0 if you need extensive undo, or simply try to find another way

Re: [libreoffice-users] a question about openning large document with libreoffice writer:

2016-02-16 Thread Bo Siltberg
Do you have lots of images in the document? That will certainly increase
the size of the file, but will also increase the loading and saving time. I
have a doc with 900 pages that loads and saves in about 15 seconds. I think
it has more than 1000 images. I moved all of them outside the odt file some
years ago which improved the performance, don't remember how much but alot.

Then, the xml code could need a cleanup of unused types etc which could
affect the performance. I have been looking for a cleaning program myself
but have not found one.

Last, the computer is of course of importance. Moving from an old laptop to
a new with SSD disk and fast CPU cut the loading and saving time to 50 %.

[libreoffice-users] LO 5.0.5.2 writer freezes during save on Win 7

2016-05-11 Thread Bo Siltberg
Sometimes during save, the progress bar freezes, mostly somewhere close to
the middle. Usually the saving continues after a few seconds but someones
LO freeze and never recover. The only way out is to kill the process. This
happens in win 7, not on win 10. The progress bar freeze on both systems,
it is only in win 7 it sometimes does not continue.

Looks like it helps to "warm up" the system, do a small change, save, do
another small change and save. If no hanging so far, then the following
saves in this session usually works.

The document is large, more than 900 pages, so it usually takes some 30
seconds to save when it works.

Anyone know how to track this down? Do the "usual support action" to delete
my profile??

Thanks
Bo

Re: [libreoffice-users] Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-05 Thread Bo Siltberg
Thanks,

Minimizing the window did not have any effect.
I have also tried to use master and sub-documents long time ago, not sure
why I abandoned that idea but I think it was something with slowness or
pagination errors during update of the master document. Besides I had to
manually fix all references to chapters etc. But it might be worth a try
again.

I have also tried to reproduce the problem using the LO user guide, but
failed so far. I thought it could have something to do with wrapping text
on the side since I have lots of pictures aligned to the right of the page
and text to the left, so I changed some figures in the LO UG but failed to
reproduce.

Anyhow, since this does not appear to be a known problem, I guess I will
continue to track down this error to see if I can pinpoint it better. Any
other ideas are welcome. It could be that the document is broken. It comes
originally from Google docs (the old version of gdoc), later converted to
OpenOffice and now LibreOffice. I think I will try to compare the xml in
the archive with the LO UG doc or another fresh document to see if I can
spot anything odd. Maybe I should try to make a new file and paste the old
doc, hoping that eventual errors stays behind? I am unable to export a
xhtml btw, LO hangs. Not sure if that indicates an error in the document?

[libreoffice-users] Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-04 Thread Bo Siltberg
I have a large document with lots of pictures currently using LO 5.1.5.2.
After doing some editing, the page formatting function kicks in
automatically but does a bad job, inserting page breaks randomly and lots
of empty pages in sequence. The total page count may increase with some 10%
due to this. I have got the impression that it is the pictures LO has
problem with since most of these extra page breaks are made where there are
pictures nearby. I have tried anchored them to the paragraph or as a
character without any effect that I can see. Closing and reopen the
document clears the problem as the initial page formatting works fine.

This is actually a very old problem, originating from the time I used OO. I
have been hoping this was a known problem and worked with. But I am a bit
confused as to where to search for the question, if it has been brought up
before. Anyone knows about this?

Thanks
Bo

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writing large or complex documents

2016-09-08 Thread Bo Siltberg
I too have that book on the reading list, it's been there for too long now..

As I show in the other thread, the image problem does not seem to be
(solely) related to "large" documents as I could reproduce one kind of
error in a one-page document.

Otherwise I guess a document can be as large as it need to be and still be
manageable. There is for example a difference in need between a book
written from top to bottom and a large technical specification which is
updated here and there and that contains internal references back and
forth. It was quite some time since I evaluated the master document
function, maybe it has evolved now to handle navigation and references
better than in the past?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-10 Thread Bo Siltberg
Thank you Wiebe for updating the existing bug report, that should be
enough. However their reply indicates that it may be difficult to solve.
Not sure that status *needinfo* means, if they want more info from us. I
hope they will take a look at this bug as it is easy to reproduce.

I have seen similar problems with pagination in tables and frames too,
where no pictures were involved. Starting with this pic bug, I hope it may
solve some other bug too related to page formatting.

Thank you, I tried your document and it indeed demonstrated an unpleasant
behaviour.
May it is time to file a bug report in the hope that this can be corrected.
I hope I am free to attach your example as well?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-24 Thread Bo Siltberg
I have noticed another odd behaviour which may be related to the "picture
problem" vs page formatting.

I have a page in my large doc with only text. This first picture shows the
content when the document is freshly loaded.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTTTJSdzBBUkNRQ00
Then, after a change somewhere (that does not affect the page count), bot
sure exactly what triggers it, it becomes
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTT3ZJdzA1cHp3U2c

Notice that the spacing between the lines has increased and that the last
line from the first picture now has spilled over to next page.
Of course, this creates seemingly unmotivated changes in the page
formatting.
Anyone has an idea what is going on here and if I can influence this
behaviour?

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-07 Thread Bo Siltberg
Thanks for that information. The article do show that it actually is a
known problem, a very old problem. I'm glad to see that.

I have managed to reproduce a strange error regarding pictures using the LO
Users Guide. There seem to be a case with a (large) picture anchored as
character followed by a smaller picture anchored to paragraph. The second
picture is also wrapped with text to its left, but I have not tested if
that is a condition for this error to occur. The picture 1
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTYlpLa1UxUDRWWjA>shows this
setup. I just took two pictures in the document and arranged them as
described above. Note that frame1 (first picture) comes before frame2 (2nd
pic) in the image list to the left.

Now, when adding or deleting text before the first picture, it will
sometimes disappear as seen in picture 2
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTclpnU3VNV182N0E> As you can
see, the disappeared picture created lots of free space, the document
became smaller so I could image this would confuse the page formatting
function. Note that the order between frame1 and 2 has changed. The first
picture has been moved after the second. So where did it go? By clicking on
frame1 I found the picture at the bottom of the page, invisible, spanning
two pages, see picture 3
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTS2E0Zm9PZ3V2ZmM> Odd indeed.

I was able to delete all other text in this document and still reproduce
the error. That's good. (The screen shots were taken before that.) I have
uploaded this mini version of the LO Users Guide
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzKxVP7gn2uTNzVvTjZCOU9jN0U> where this
error can be reproduced, at least by me. I would appreciate if someone else
could confirm the behaviour that I see. Just place the cursor above the
large picture, hit enter / backspace back and forth, which sometimes will
make the large picture disappear. This is LO 5.1.5.2 but I do see the
problem in 5.2 as well.

A work around is to place the small picture and its text to the left in a
two-column table, and keep the large picture anchored as character - that
appears to work fine. The picture in the table is also anchored as
character if that makes difference. I guess that it may take time to find
and resolve this error in LO so I will need to apply this work around. But
I have more than 1000 pictures in my doc so I need to gather some strength
first before taking that step...

btw, this was one (1) scenario - I can only hope it is the only scenario
that makes LO mess up the page formatting.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Making hyperlink within Writer document?

2016-10-15 Thread Bo Siltberg
How do you want to modify them?

References are created with Ctrl-F2 which brings up the Fields meny, choose
tab Cross-references.
There you can create own reference targets, or insert a reference to either
an own reference or to a chapter (or something else).
What kind of reference are you using?

It sounds like your references have moved. Maybe the easiest way is to
create a new reference. It sounds like you want a reference to a chapter,
so simply go into C-F2, select Headings in the left menu, choose how the
reference shall appear in the menu under, and then select the chapter in
the menu to the right.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Search and Replace: Line Breaks

2017-08-23 Thread Bo Siltberg
Actually, it is possible by using the extension "alternative searching". I
got version 1.4.2 installed.
Tools -> Extension manager... -> Get more extensions online

Just insert \p in the replace field for a paragraph break or \n for a line
break.

This extension is also good for searching for the contents of a hyperlink
(the target link, not the visible text) and cross references.

[libreoffice-users] Images silently disappears from write document

2021-01-11 Thread Bo Siltberg
Hi,

I have a large document with lots of images.
All image files are stored on disk externally from the document, in a
directory just beside the odt file. I use relative links to them from the
odt file (inserting them as link).

Now and then, *a large amount of images suddenly disappears from the odt*
as if they never were inserted into the document. I see this fault first
after having closed and reopened the document. I have lost about 100 images
each time...

The image file itself is intact, nothing wrong with it. I can insert it
again.
I have never *seen* that an image gets missing when I just do save, but
since close and open does not update the file(?), the bug seem to occur "in
the background" during save. After save, the images are still there in the
opened document and I can continue adding more.

The image count in *Files->Properties->Statistics* still show the correct
old number as it should be when I open a faulty odt, but I am uncertain how
this count is kept, whether it actually counts the image tags. It's
behaviour is strange. What does the reset button do? When fiddling around
with reset, OK and other stuff I suddenly see a lower image count here
which probably reflects the true amount. I have monitored this count in
order to detect when images disappear, but obviously that count was a false
indication. I suspect the fault occur at save, but I don't *see* the fault
until I close and reopen the document?

The missing images are not part of the *Edit->Links to external files*...
And they are not part of the *Images* list in the *Navigator*.
If I open the xml file inside the odt, there is no trace of the image at
the place where it should be located.
So, the image is truly gone from the xml code.

One interesting observation is that images of type *.svg* seem to create a
png copy inside LO, which is stored in the Pictures directory of the odt. I
have noticed that LO sometimes fails to write all of them. Some may be
missing, but after opening the document and saving it again, they reappear
(not 100.0% sure about this).

I'm using the latest stable version 6.4.x of libreoffice.
I first saw this problem in September. Not sure for how long it has been
there.
The document has about 1400 pages with about 1800 images. I *am* aware of
its size...
It has an old history, starting in the old version of Google Docs, to
openoffice and then to libreoffice writer. I wonder if there is a way to
"clean" the xml file?

To my question, is this a known problem? Is redmine the place to report it?

A more pressing question is *how I can monitor this bug. How do a get a
true count of images* in the document that I can use regularly to monitor
this? I cannot get a grip on the behaviour of the statistics page. Do I
need to write a macro, or a python script that reads the odt?

I can try 1000 things to isolate this bug, but I stop here in case someone
can point me in a good direction.

Thanks
Bo

Re: [libreoffice-users] REGEX difficulty

2021-05-21 Thread Bo Siltberg
What flavour of regex are we talking about?
Can you show us how you get three matches here.
I can only see that there will be one match, 29, 79 or 97.
Furthermore, if you intend to use this as a "lookahead", there is something
missing in the regex, the prefix that shall be matched if it is followed by
one of these numbers, and in this case, only 29 will make that prefix match.
If you provide the help description of the parameters to REGEX() I'm sure
we can find an explanation of its behaviour.
