[libreoffice-users] LO spreadsheet format row

2016-03-28 Thread Helen
Is there a way, in L.O. spreadsheet, to lock the rows so that a row cannot
take
more than one line? So that all rows have the same height. Freeze doens't
seem to do that.
Thank you,

Re: [libreoffice-users] [OT] Operating Environment Survey

2015-07-20 Thread Helen
I am not young (as someone suggested early on that Linux users usually
are). I have Linux
lxle on one desktop, opensuse on another desktop, and ubuntu on a very very
old laptop.
No windows products. Android tablet.

Thank you, yes, I have never defined a style and felt discouraged to read

[libreoffice-users] LO text

2013-11-18 Thread Helen
L) frustration -- trying to write a letter for the national office of an
organization. I have five items that I want to number. LO insists upon
giving me a number I don't want every time I hit "return" and it also
insists upon indent in places I don't want. I backspace to remove the
indent and it then won't let me have a return-line space. How can I turn
off all automatic formatting?

Re: [libreoffice-users] random # in calc

2013-11-14 Thread Helen
Actually Brian's idea worked very well. But as I said in my Q, it's a
rather trivial need. Usually,
at Thanksgiving, we toss handwritten names on paper scraps into a real hat,
and everyone draws a
name. Some people have said they don't like to wait that late to do their
shopping, so the
virtual hat occurred to me. As I look at Brian's "IF" code, I understand
what the script is doing, so
I've learned something useful, and hope others on the list have as well.

[libreoffice-users] random # in calc

2013-11-11 Thread Helen
A LO calc question. It's a bit trivial, but I'm sure it can be done.
Names of about 20 people. Draw names for Christmas gifts.
We can wait until we're all together in a couple of weeks, and that
will work, but can we do this by running a random number generator
in calc? Type 20 names into column one, then the same names again
in column 2, then run a random number generator to match them up?
I did something similar to this about a year ago (for a church dinner)
but for the life of me I just can't remember how I did it, and the
instructions
I get by googling don't work. (When I follow those instructions, the
function returns #NAME? in the cell.)
Thanks for any pointers,

[libreoffice-users] .odt to .rtf ?

2013-07-11 Thread Helen
I agreed to edit (one time only) a local literary magazine comeing out
soon.
I have saved each of the documents (plays, poetry, etc.) and edited in
LibreOffice.
Before sending the files to the publisher, I've been saving them to .doc.
The publisher emails to say that all the documents have weird formatting and
strange characters. He wants to know if I can send the files to him in
.rft (rich text) format. I don't see that as an option in the "save as"
menu.
Is there a way I can do this -- convert the .odt files to .rtf? Using
LibreOffice
on Suse Linux.

Thanks all,

Stuart, Fred, Brian, Steve -- thank you for great ideas. I've learned a lot
of useful things that I'll make notes on here.

Thanks!

[libreoffice-users] styles for plays?

2013-06-26 Thread Helen
I've volunteered to edit a one-time publication of a collection of plays.
The plays came to me
in different styles -- three of the plays came to me with all the
characters's speaking lines
centered -- the characters's names centered a line above.

Some of the writers seem to have centered the names with a centering code
-- I can
highlight the name and use the "left margin" code to move the name to left
margin. Others
seem to have centered by spacing over! (yes) and I have to backspace until
I get the name
to the left margin.

None used a colon after the speaker, and the publisher wants it. I've made
some progress with
Search & Replace -- Search for all incidents of TOM and replace with TOM
colon space. But the
most tedious part is moving TOM from center to left and bring his speaking
lines up to begin
on the same line. Is there any way I can put these plays into a style
sheet and save this work, or
would creating the style sheet take as long as what I'm doing? I've never
used styles. And this is a one-time
job so if I have to do it all by hand, at least it's only once.

Thanks for any advice,

Yes, I have Epson 1400 printer, and I have to do that each time as well.

Re: [libreoffice-users] New brothers printer does not appear to print Landscape.

2012-06-21 Thread Helen
I had the same problem, and here's the fix:
In OO or LO, in the print dialogue, there is a "properties" button,
and from there, Device tab.

One of the dropdowns there is "Language". It defaults to PDF

If you instead select "Postscript (Level from driver)" then landscape
printing works.

It's a bug in OO and LO, and can be "fixed" for each
individual printing job. Unfortunately, I haven't learned a way to
make the fix permanent.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Open Office and Libre Office Questions...

2012-04-19 Thread Helen
I've also been wondering how I can go back to OpenOffice, wondering
whether I should uninstall LibreOffice first.
I've had trouble with LibreOffice refusing to print in landscape mode.
I googled and learned that it's a known issue -- at least a few
people have reported this. I've tried everything I know (not much) to
fix it, but, although Print Preview looks fine, anything printed
in landscape mode is distorted. So I'm thinking of getting rid of
Libre Office and re-installing Open Office. I'm not a sophisticated
user and not even sure I know how to do this correctly.
