Re: [libreoffice-users] Image Anchor Selection
Thank you for educating me further. Here is why I use "To page" anchoring. I make a newsletter to send out at the end of the calendar year depicting what I have done through the year including photos. Only family and friends would be interested. While other software tools would perhaps be better suited to this task, I am familiar enough with Writer to make it work. I format it in two columns, and it usually runs one page printed on both front and back. My issue is when I go back later to make edits, and unless an image is anchored to the page it will wander around sometimes being forced to jump to the back when I want it to remain on the front. I hope this explains my reasons for using "To page" as an anchor. It is a bit like using my pliers as a hammer instead of choosing the proper tool for the job. I did not mean to kick a hornets nest and stir up a storm of flying insects. Respectfully, Joe Conner On 6/15/23 01:56, lo.harald.ber...@t-online.de wrote: Dear Joe Conner and @all, You mentioned that the menu item anchoring "To page" is no longer available. Unfortunately you did not mention in which cases you need this function. Here I'd like to review @Robert Großkopf, quote, "Note: It may have been omitted because anchoring to a page means it's fixed to a page like in old layout days and will cause problems in master documents." But not just in master documents. But the question should be what is the anchoring to the page supposed to achieve. IMHO it seems only reasonable, e.g. in a book the first page should be designed with a picture. Or one wants to insert full page images on several pages, e.g. at the beginning of chapters. Of course I don't know the application of other users, but here examples would be helpful. When anchoring images to the page, keep in mind that they can no longer "wander" to other pages. So if you have an image anchored to page 5, you can insert or remove as much text as you want in front of that page, but the image will remain fixed to page 5. This can even mean that if you remove a lot of text in front of it, you'll only have 4 pages left, for example, but the image will still be anchored to page 5 and will probably just disappear. Many users are mostly not aware of this function so in detail and you have a completely different idea of how it should work. Since the function anchoring "To Page" was very often misinterpreted in the past, it was probably decided not to offer this menu item directly. The anchoring "To Page" function is now only available in the Styles/Frame Styles. How do I achieve anchoring "To Page" in the easiest and quickest way possible? I just mentioned the Frame Styles, which should now be dealt with more intensively. LibreOffice Writer has, so to speak, predefined processes for images. Every image inserted into Writer is associated or assigned to the "Graphics" Frame Style (yes, Frame Style). The, I'll call it special, feature of images is the caption of the same. So if you want to add a caption to an image, a frame is inserted around the image. As known, the caption can be above or below the image. The frame around the image is again assigned to the Frame Style "Frame". In the following we assume that no caption is added to the image. This means that the Frame Style "Graphics" is relevant for the image. Now, in order to achieve a quick, even immediate, anchoring of an image to the page, we need to adjust the "Graphics" Frame Style. Here's how to do it: Open Writer with a blank document. Modify the "Graphics" Frame Style by setting the anchoring to "To page" in the Frame Style and save it by clicking OK. Now save the document as a Template, possibly with the check mark for "Set as default template". If you now open the Template, you will get the document "Untitled 1". Now insert an image. This image is now automatically anchored to the page, because it is assigned to the changed Frame Style "Graphics". Finally, I would like to point out that this procedure will only lead to a good and desired result in special cases. The most common anchors will probably be the variants offered in the context menu (not on the page). On this page you will find further descriptions about anchoring and positioning of images: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/Insert_and_edit_images_in_Writer_Part_1 I personally wouldn't consider the missing selection in the context menu for anchoring "To page" as a bug. I hope I have been able to help a little to understand the processes involved in anchoring images. Any formula defines what is displayed. What would be the function of the additional text? How can this be done? If you need a function reference, as here, but want the displayed result to contain additional material, you need to include that material inside the formula containing the function. You can concatenate text with a function result using the CONCATENATE() function, or more simply using the "&" operator. Any non-text value, such as a number, is implicitly converted to text to enable this. For example, =SQRT(3+1) displays 2 whereas ="The square root of 3+1 is "&SQRT(3+1)&"." displays The square root of 3+1 is 2. I trust this helps. Brian Barker -- A smile - is a sign of joy. All I got was explaining how LO does it. Hold on: you asked on a list concerned with LibreOffice about printing envelopes and you got a reply about how LibreOffice prints envelopes? I have to say that I'm not surprised! Surely you shouldn't expect anything else? It's worth saying that "printing envelopes" is not really a concept any more than "printing letters to my maiden aunt" or "printing notices for the youth club notice board". An envelope is just a particular variety of paper stock, and you can print on it just as you can print on any other stock. Set your document size and orientation to that of your envelopes and proceed as usual. The only stumbling block may be discovering in which orientation your printer expects envelopes to be loaded (which varies between printers) and how you then ensure that you document is constructed appropriately to match. Finally someone said LO only prints one envelope for one document, ... LibreOffice has the facility easily to add to a letter (or other postal document) a single envelope in which to post it. Most letters go in a single envelope. If you don't want that, don't use it. I suspect your respondents were trying to be helpful. And what is this "one document"? You said you wanted to printed envelopes - nothing about documents. ... not 100 envelopes with a custom return address. Is that what you asked for? That's easy: construct a document that is the face of your envelope with the custom return address and nothing else. Experiment to confirm orientations as above. Load your envelopes. Print the document, setting "Number of copies" to 100. Job done. Or do you perhaps mean something else? Do you want to print a hundred envelopes with the same return address but with a hundred different addresses on them - presumably sourced from a database of addresses? If so, you have not mentioned most of that! Most word processors have the facility to do this, and LibreOffice is no exception. The process is called "mail merge" and is covered in Chapter 11 of the Writer Guide "Using Mail Merge - Form Letters, Mailing Labels, and Envelopes" - specifically in the section "Printing envelopes". It's not trivial, but I think it is fairly easy to follow. I trust this helps. Brian Barker -- A smile - is a sign of joy. A hug - is a sign of love. A laugh - is a sign of happiness. However, the "Select Source" dialog looks identical to one used in GIMP, which does work and opens an external application to operate the scanner (either "Windows Image Acquisition" wizard or an application from the scanner manufacturer, depending which "source" I select). Assuming it's similar on Linux, I'd guess that the actual dialog where you select the scan mode is some other application not directly under LibreOffice's control which defaults to a particular set of options. You may need to figure out what that application is (maybe XSane?), and see if it has any options for saving presets etc. If it's opening a separate application, that may also account for the delay opening the scanner options, which you previously mentioned. Re: [libreoffice-users] Sorting Calc Sheet in Alphabet orde on names in one Column
Yes. You must first select all the cells you want to sort. You can easily do this by clicking the little square above the row numbers and left of the column letters. This will select the entire sheet. Next from the top heading bar at the very top select DATA then from the drop-down context menu select SORT. Then select the sort critera (in your case the columns that have the names in it. Also mark if you want the sort ascending or descending (you want ascending). If you want a secondary sort you can input the criteria also. Finally click the OK button at the bottom. Now, the Styles box shares the Sidebar with the Properties, Gallery, and Navigator boxes, and when I open a new file, it defaults to the Properties box (a la AOO), when I *want* the Styles box. So, with every document, I now have to click on the Styles icon in the Sidebar. I've looked everywhere to find a way to make "Styles" the default Sidebar box, but with no luck. Every UI change forces the user to change the way s/he uses the program, and those changes affect our personal performance and productivity, at least until we learn the new system. My thoughts came from how a Bible program handles this situation. For example, I have German and English translations of the Bible side by side. There the same verses are shown for them. Sometimes there are extra spaces on the German side, and sometimes there are extra on the English side. I also have a German-English New Testament from the 1800's. It also has the same print layout. A very important question is: What is the purpose of having the original and the translation side by side? This should determine the layout. This is done easily enough in columns, but there must be some way to pass two threads of raw text to a section in which one thread is passed only to odd pages and the other only to even pages, or are we stuck with alternating the text manually and inserting a gazillion page breaks? I think that page styles will do it. Open an untitled document in Writer. Use the F4 key to open the Styles and Formating Window. Click the "Page Styles" icon at the top of this window. Double click "First Page" from the lists of page styles to apply this style to the page. Then right click "First Page" and select Modify from the context menu. Change the "Next Style" property to "Left Page". Click OK. This should do it. Enter the original text on the left pages and the translations on the right pages. The reason this works is because of styles. They insure that each left page is followed by a right page which is followed by a left page... Writer is designed to begin with the first page on the right, so you need the "First Page" to fulfill this need. From then on the left and right pages will follow correctly. (No page breaks are needed.) In the bottom right corner of the Writer window are three icons of pages. The one of the right is the one you should click if it is not highlighted. This places two pages in the window beginning with a right page first followed by a left right page combination.
