Thanks for the tips

Versions of Writer.
PCs with wider character spacing.
Linux Opensuse 15.5, LO 24.2.4.2, Intel and Nvidia graphics card
Macbook Air, Monterey 12.7.6, LO 24.2.5.2

PCs with narrower spacing.
Linux Opensuse 15.5, LO 24.2.4.2, Intel and Nvidia graphics card
Windows Laptop, Win 10.0, LO 24.2.3.2

The Font is Roboto-Regular.ttf.
The font was installed from the same .ttf file. The Macbook (with
wide spacing) and the Win10 laptop (narrow spacing) both have
only
the one version of Roboto-Regular.ttf, the same size.

The Opensuse machines both have the same font as above installed
in
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/Roboto-Regular.ttf
The Opensuse machine displaying closer characters has a different
version of the font in
/home/steve/Qt/6.6.2/Src/qtwebengine/src/3rdparty/chromium/third_
party/skia/tools/perf-canvaskit-
puppeteer/canvas_perf_assets/Roboto-Regular.ttf

The Opensuse machine displaying wider spaced characters has a
different version of the font in ./fonts/truetype/Roboto-
Regular.ttf.
This may be the issue, I will remove it and check.

The duplicate of the font has been removed from the Opensuse
machine
displaying wider spaced characters and no difference is observed
making this PC the same as the Macbook with only one copy of the
font.

I have done a little more detailed comparison between the document on
the Macbook and the Linux machine displaying narrower character
spacing.
The line spacing on the Macbook is also greater than on the Linux
machine, I get 2 fewer lines on a page.
Is there a setting that affects the font size that overrides the
paragraph style, no character style is applied.
Steve

Hi Steve,

This is probably not it, but in work for a translation client who
produces large files I discovered that on one of my machines in
Settings>Load>General I had the first box ticked that applies the users
format to the document. That was slowing the loading time and changing
the number of pp.

I would also check that the compatibility options for Writer are the
same on your machines.

Interesting problem. Hope you find the solution.

Best,
Roy

Thanks Roy. I may have a way to resolve the issue.
Settings>Load>General are the same. Compatibility options are the
same. Thanks for the suggestions.

In short, the document with the issue has paragraphs that are bulleted
using the bullet button in the tool bar. I found that by turning these
bullets off and using a bullet list style instead adjusted to the same
measurements as the button list the document that showed wider
character spacing and increased line spacing on the mac now displays
the same as the Linux and Win10 machines with the narrower character
spacing. I will check the other Linux machine tomorrow.

It was not just the bulleted lists, the issue persisted. It was not the
font, a basic document with 150 pages of flowing text in the same Roboto
font displayed identical on both machines.
What I have noticed now is that when a numbering list style is applied
the character style on the Customise tab of the style definition is not
applied, neither is the paragraph font. By chance I noticed when the
cursor was in front of the numbering it was of a font that was not
installed so line spacing was arbitrarily affected by the font
substitution.

I can change the font at any level of numbering from the tool bar in the
head of the window (with the cursor in front of that font) and this
change is automatically saved in the list style definition currently
active (even though it contradicts the character style showing) for just
that level and applied to all occurrences in the document of that list
style and level.

I couldn't find a related bug posted.

[libreoffice-users] Different character spacing on different PCs in writer.

2024-08-21 Thread Steve Edmonds
I am sure this must have come up before but can't locate any discussion.
In writer the same odt file presents different horizontal character
spacing between different PCs. This means sharing the document for
editing is not necessarily possible.

In the manual I am editing at present the difference adds 4 pages.
The font used is installed from the same font file. Nothing is inherited
from the default paragraph style.
I have 2 Linux machines, same OS, same version of LO (24.2.4.2). One has
wider character spacing than the other, wrapping more lines, moving
images and adding 4 pages. If I apply a character style with -0.1pt
character spacing it brings the wider spacing back close to the original
spacing.
I have given the document to a colleague with Win11 for amendments and
he sees the closer spacing. I have also loaded the document onto my MAC
with LO 24.2.5.2 which displays the wider spacing.

I would appreciate any help in what may be causing this issue and how to
control it. I am particularly perplexed with the fact that it can be
different on 2 near identical PCs.

TIA

So, question; is there a way to automate the application of the
styles and remove the tabs at the beginning of paragraphs. Normal
find and replaces doesn't cut it. Otherwise I'm forced to go through
several books by hand.

You can find tabs using the standard Find and Replace (Ctrl+H). In the
Find box, enter \t and leave the Replace box  empty.

You will need to check the *Regular Expressions* box in the Find and
Replace dialog.

Like all Find and Replace ops, be wary of hitting the 'Replace All'
button in case you have used tabs anywhere else in the document other
than at the start of a paragraph. \t will locate all the tabs used
within the the doc.

If you *only* want to find a tab at the beginning of a paragraph, you
can use ^\t in the Find box.  I checked this in LO 7.3.7.2 in Ubuntu
2204 and it works fine.

You can also use Find and Replace to locate one paragraph style and
replace it with another. In this case you will have to select the
Paragraph Styles box. This operation works fine to change styles but
it will not remove any 'ad hoc' manual formatting such as Bold,
Italic, tabs which you may have applied in the unwanted paragraph
style's text.

Chris, does chapter and heading text have leading tabs. When you talk
about tabs a the beginning of paragraphs, I assume just the first lines
of a paragraphs are indented with tabs and the rest of the paragraph
text just flows without line breaks. Do you have multiple leading tabs
or is it always a single tab with may be varying tab position. I have
had occasion to clean a plain text document by removing line breaks from
single lines to form a paragraph and remove indenting tabs. i.e. replace
a linebreak followed by 1 or more tabs with a single space when the line
break is not at the beginning of a line. Hopefully this is not your
situation.

laptop, wifi connected - my desktop wired Ethernet is fine). In my case
it is the Brother MFC (network connected) that doesn't show on the laptop.

Are your printers connected USB or Ethernet? I suspect it is an OS thing.

I'm not happy with "it is what it is." It seems rather to be a bug in
how the print dialogue works. Either something in Fedora 39 or in this
version of LO. (7.6.6.7 (x86_64). It doesn't happen, e.g., with
Document Viewer or Text Editor, which suggests it's something in LO.

Mike, you say both machines are Mint, MATE or Xfce? Did you install

Mint Mate; versions 21 and (iirc) 20.2 on the lappy.

LO is installed from the relevant ubuntu PPA. This machine (mint 21)
says (synaptic) 1:7.3.7-0ubuntu0.22.0.4.3, but I think the other
machine is on LO 6.something (IMBW) from the ub PPA. They have the
same issue.

I do find the unpredictability rather concerning. I've just had to
hunt for a "failing" file, but did find one. 'Save As' consistently
(well, for the moment anyway!) adds the file extension in the
dialogue. I switched to LO style dialogue boxes, and they behave as
expected (file name given, no extension) - switching back to system
style dialogues restores the wrong behaviour.

BTW, of two files -- an original plus a copy made with Caja (^C and
^V) -- they consistently (for now) behave in the two different ways.

Thanks all for more comments. I hesitate to raise a bug report over
this; for one thing the LO web bug page I found last time pretty
incomprehensible, but for another it's really not repeatable enough.
I'm not really sure where to go from here.

The last two responses (Mike and Steve) mentioned dialogs - system

what I'm using.

In my UbuntuStudio LTS 2204 with KDE Plasma desktop, I'm using every
day LO's own dialog boxes. Not thro a specific choice but because it
never occurred to me to do otherwise. And as I've said in a couple
of posts to this thread, I've never experienced the OP's issue
although 'save as' is part of my daily routine.

So I just changed the setting - I deselected the use LO open/save
dialogs and then tried a 'save as'. The suggested filename was then
complete with the odt suffix.  I re-selected the LO open/save
dialogs and tried again - the suggested filename was without the odt

this affair.  And my distro now uses the KDE desktop whereas for

LO. That was something I hadn't considered so I just checked what I'm
using.

In my UbuntuStudio LTS 2204 with KDE Plasma desktop, I'm using every
day LO's own dialog boxes. Not thro a specific choice but because it
never occurred to me to do otherwise. And as I've said in a couple of
posts to this thread, I've never experienced the OP's issue although
'save as' is part of my daily routine.

So I just changed the setting - I deselected the use LO open/save
dialogs and then tried a 'save as'. The suggested filename was then
complete with the odt suffix.  I re-selected the LO open/save dialogs
and tried again - the suggested filename was without the odt suffix.
So it seems that using system dialogs does play a part in this
affair.  And my distro now uses the KDE desktop whereas for years it
was XFCE.

I just switched from the KDE file manager (Dolphin) to the LO file
load/save dialogues, there is definitely an issue with LO when using
Dolphin that is not evident with other apps using Dolphin.

Philip, are you using LO from their site or an Ubuntu packaged version.
Mike, you say both machines are Mint, MATE or Xfce? Did you install from
a PPA or the LO website.

Thanks to you and to all for comments.

Yesterday I observed the behaviour you described, just once, first
time in a few years since the bug saving with file names containing
multiple '.'s (i.e. API12.578.PT100SB.odt) was fixed. This time also
I had a file name suggested in the "Save As" Name field, no extension
showing, file type .odt selected and LO saved the file without any
extension.

I couldn't repeat it. I have no idea what logic is involved.

Hmm the gremlins persist - my last email seems not to have made it to
the list.

First, in answer to a query, the dialogue box style is set to system
not LO's own. But as, today, I can't provoke the behaviour at all, I
can't say whether the choice of style affects matters.

And the text of my last email, telling of a very odd thing, was as
follows (apologies if anyone's already seen this):

===

Thanks for the comment; similar I guess.

The craziest thing today though. Having tried and failed to make my
desktop fail again, I've just tried my rather slower laptop. The
dialogue box briefly flashed up something I couldn't make out, so I
set a screen recorder running. Serious weirdness is evident.

When I do the 'Save As', the dialogue box comes up. At one point as I
step through frame-by-frame, the main area (the panel with a list of
file names on disk) is empty, and the save as file name box at the top
contains the highlighted file name, no type.

At the next frame, the main area is populated, and the filename box
now contains the name plus highlighted type - which is the bad
behaviour I have noted.

I should add, it took a couple of tries to get it to happen.

I can't imagine what's going on internally to do this. And seemingly
randomly at that.

Maybe the gremlins are getting restless? :}

===

If it happens again, try the LO file dialogue. I had do do this a while
back for a period where the KDE dialogue was acting badly under LO.

I assumed this is a cell in Calc and not a writer table.
Right click the row number and select "Optimal height"

My problem is that in editing and then re-editing text in a cell so
that at one point there are three lines of text and then I edit and
only two lines are needed, there is no automatic reduction of the

How do I remove the empty line so that all the cells in the line only

Can you see the files in your file manager (not through Libreoffice), if

If you create a new document in Libreoffice and save it, can you then

Re: [libreoffice-users] Copy/past a table changes following paragraph style

2023-07-23 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi Harald.
Hopefully you can download a document created from scratch here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SFA7STG_5rSg435gZTZ_mhWoz5XMqO_d/view?usp=sharing

The procedure described in the document is a little different from my
first description but replication of the bug seems more consistent. In
my original document inserting above a blank line is not always required
and the change of style can occur before or after the inserted table.

Steve

Hi Steve,
I think you can assume that your description is not a normal
obsolescence.
I tested it on my end and the table can be inserted without another
blank line or changed paragraph style.
You can also test this yourself with a new fresh file, short
paragraphs and a minimal table.
However, it will be a bit difficult to find out what the problem is in
your described file.
From experience I know that the end of a paragraph can cause a
different style to appear for the rest of the text.

This is a mess that usually cannot be tracked well.
A control character could have been inserted by mistake, text from
other sources could have been inserted,
an already contaminated document template could have been used or
other things.
You will only be able to solve the problem if you rebuild the document
and insert the existing text as unformatted text and then use only
styles.
If you want, you can also upload a sample file (1-2 pages with the
problem) somewhere in the cloud and post the link on the list so
someone can look at it and examine it.

Kind regards

Hi all; a very weird issue has been found by my wife, which I can

What happens is this. Take an odt file, open it in Writer then go
to 'Save As'. The expected behaviour is that the filename in the
dialogue box will be filled in and selected/highlighted and
there'll be no file type appended. Eg, I open yyy.odt, and 'Save
As' displays just 'yyy' (highlighted).

However, sometimes and for no apparent reason, the dialogue box
instead displays filename and file type ('yyy.odt'), with the type
(only) highlighted. This causes issues when trying to save as a
different type (eg as .docx)

(TLDR: open question at end! The details of my testing results are
too long; sorry.)

Thanks all for comments, including one off-list. Ap[ologies for not
getting back sooner - family matters intervened.

To clarify, my made-up name yyy.odt was (previously) by way of
indicating what happens, not that that was the literal file causing
problems. Apologies for any mis-direction.

I'm still none the wiser as to what's happening. I've just checked
again the environment for the files. I have a file in a directory
/dhome/mike, and an identical copy (^C ^V in a file manager) in
/dhome/mike/temp of a file called

Saturday  song sheet.odt
(yes - there are two spaces together there, but that's not the issue)

I close LO. Double-click on the one in the temp directory, head for
File|Save As. The filename is filled in

Saturday  song sheet
and selected. No file type.

So, I close LO. Double-click on the one in the higher directory;
again File|Save As. This time, the file name and type appear;

Saturday  song sheet.odt
the /type/ alone is selected.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the behaviour in the two
cases should be different.

To add to my confusion, I've just tried the following sequence of
operations, starting with the "failing" file in /dhome/mike:

make a copy and change name:
cp Saturday\ \ song\ sheet.odt yyy.odt
open yyy.odt and see that Save As prefills the file name box as
"yyy.odt" with the odt selected.

Rename and do the same again:
mv yyy.odt yy.odt
Same issue - Save As shows the name and type.

Finally, do it again:
mv yy.odt y.odt
But now y.odt opens the same, but Save As simply shows a highlighted
"y" in the file name box.

Oh, and if I rename y.odt back to yy.odt, the problem comes back.
And, if I copy yy.odt (fails) to my temp directory, all is well with
the copy.

The thing is, when trying to save as .doc having the file type
pre-set in the box causes a problem - LO will try to save a .doc (or
whatever) as the type shown, and it needs manually changing. That's
hazardous for someone like my wife, and can potentially lose the
original .odt file.

I've just tried a similar sequence with the same file in my "real"
home directory (/home/mike) with identical results.

**?
Does LO perhaps treat "top-level" directories in some way specially?
My current guess is that multi-character file names in a "top-level"
directory are treated differently from others. That would be very odd
though, so IMBW!

Thanks for reading. I find this sort of problem hard to describe
concisely. Am I missing something obvious?

Hi Mike,
I've tried to replicate your series of moves listed in your latest
email. I even started with a file of the same name, Saturday  song
list.odt, and used mv and cp as close as I could following your
sequence. In every case, when I came to 'save as' in LO Writer 7.3.7.2
in UbuntuStudio 2022LTS, only the file name without extension was
shown in the 'file name' box. I tried saving into the ~/ directory and
into other lower levels.

I have been unable to replicate your case where the file name and its
extension are given in the 'save as' | 'file name box'.

I'm commonly working on Writer docs three and four levels down from
the home directory and 'save as' is one of my most common ways of
duplicating a file to provide a starter in a new directory. I've never
seen the behavior you describe.

This doesn't help you, I'm afraid. Could it be something connected
with your OS version? I can't exactly recall if my LO is the
UbuntuStudio distribution version or wh

A thought in passing - it would seem the OP's issue is that the UI has
changed, but he had no (ready) way of knowing in what way. In this
case a context menu item has been moved to the depths of a dialogue
box.

Might it be a good idea, when this is done, to leave the original menu
entry in place, but have it just show an information box saying where
the item can be found and maybe give a pointer to [a web page with]
some hints on the matter? And leave that in place for several
releases.

Thanks, Robert. I didn't know there could be multiple pages in a Draw
document. However, you can insert multi-page PDFs as images, so I wonder if
they could be handled similarly.

Anyway, I'll just have to go with SVGs and re-export every time. Oh wait...
there appears to be a bug in Writer that causes it to export Draw-generated
SVGs as blank when you render a document that contains them as a PDF.
Meanwhile, it renders embedded SVGs from Sketch just fine.

I guess Writer really has something against Draw!

I just did a quick test and a simple SVG exported from Draw, inserted
into Writer, rendered fine. LO 7.4.3.2

Hi Regina,

But you can use {=AVERAGE({ABS($Sheet1.B1:$Sheet1.B30)} for example.

Besides the typo, for that to work it would need to be all in the same
worksheet, which is contrary to the initial setup.

ISTM that using SUM() and COUNT() would be simpler, if the data is
already with the layout as described, in multiple sheets.

Don't see how just using SUM() and COUNT() would
work.

Sum() and Count() work an ranges which include several sheets. So if you
did not need Abs(), then Sum()/Count() would give the average.

Therefore the problem here is, that Steve needs the Abs() function, for
what ever reason.

Unfortunately Sumif() does neither work on ranges over several sheets.
So the solution
(Sumif(myRange;">0")-Sumif(myRange;"<0")/Count(myRange) will not work,
if myRange goes over several sheets.

Interesting. Don't know why sum() and count() have no
problem handling cells across sheets but sumif() doesn't?
Just did my test using cells on single sheet and it had no
problem, but then did try it with using b2 on sheet1 thru
sheet6, and get error. Do a lot of things with calc, but
not things like that.

In my test, seems one would have to individually do each
cell. In my case I did 6, but his would require 19??
Actually 29 sheets. I couldn't find a way to address sheets by position
rather than name. The first sheet is 1, the last 19 and the ones in the
middle have various names.

=AVERAGE(ABS(Sheet1.B2),ABS(Sheet2.B2),ABS(Sheet
3.B2),ABS(Sheet4.B2),ABS(Sheet5.B2),ABS(Sheet6.B2))

Don't have quick access to see if its SUMIF would
support ranges. Have used spreadsheets going back to
visicalc on Apple, Lotus 1 on PC then thru version of
Lotus, Quattro Pro, and then Open and Libre Calc.

Wonder why the Sumif doesn't use similar base as sum?

Thanks for info.

Inside one sheet there is no problem with abs or sumif using ranges.

Kind regards,
Regina

Yes. This is what I want to do.

If so, there are different ways to accomplish that, but before going

Re: [libreoffice-users] RPM upgrade 7.4 to 7.5

2023-02-03 Thread Steve Edmonds
I am not sure if this will be of any help as I use SUSE with YAST and
zypper, but it looks like dnf/yum may have similar functionality.
Using downloaded (not from a repository) RPMs that will undergo regular
updates I create a local repository from a directory containing the RPMs.
My system treats 7.3 and 7.4 as 2 different packages, I would have 2
different local repositories.
To go from 7.3 to 7.4 I would mark 7.3 to uninstall and 7.4 to install
and mostly the dependency checking allows resolution of any issues.

To go from 7.3.1 to 7.3.2 say would be seen as an upgrade.

This means it is easy to swap back from say 7.4 to 7.3 if you strike a
bug that is a show stopper for you while you wait for the bug
resolution, as I have had on a few occasions.

Any solution for an upgrade?
As I face this issue on every major release.

dnf update will eventually update the libreoffice that is
in the Fedora/Redhat repos when they are updated.

As I understand it, you would need to download and
repeat process to update libreoffice versions.

I use a little script after downloading the lastest update
and help gz files.

newlib=$(ls -1 LibreOffice_$1*.gz |tail -n 1 | cut -f1,2 -d_)
mkdir $newlib
cd $newlib/
for a in ../$newlib*.gz ; do tar xvf $a ; done
for a in $(find . | grep "\.rpm") ; do mv $a .; done
rpm -Uvh *.rpm
tar -Jcvf ../$newlib.xz *.rpm
rm l*.rpm -f
rm LibreOffice_$1* -R -f
cd ..
rmdir $newlib

If you have installed the help, the upgrade gives an error
if the new help files are not installed at same time. If you
just install without help, you can just do the rpm update.
I like to create an archive of rpms to then copy to other
machines..

So make example is what I use, but you may want to do
something different.

OK, found the sheet.
Had to copy it from the machine I used the sheet on last month as can't

Thanks for the reply.

Here's the thing. It's not that I want to force a recalculate, it's
that I have to in order to get the macros to respond.

Here's an example: (What I expect when the spreadsheet finishes
opening.)

/*Cell*//*
*/ /*Contents*//*
*/ /*Display*//*
*/
D1
192.168.17.231/24
192.168.17.231/24
D2
=ipwithoutmask(D1)
192.168.17.231
D3
=ipmask(D1)
255.255.255.0
D4
=ipmasklken(D3)
24

Now, when I actually do open the spreadsheet, it says:

/*Cell*//*
*/ /*Contents*//*
*/ /*Display*//*
*/
D1
192.168.17.231/24
192.168.17.231/24
D2
=ipwithoutmask(D1)
#NAME?
D3
=ipmask(D1)
#NAME?
D4
=ipmasklken(D3)
#NAME?

So, if I say it differently, it *seems* like the Macros aren't run
when the spreadsheet is opened.

The macro library has a "Main" entry that is empty. If I choose
"Tools" -> "Macros" -> "Run macro" and then select "Main" and execute
it, there's no visible change.

BUT, if I go into the contents of "D2" and add a space at the end of
the formula "=ipwithoutmask(D1)" to read "=ipwithoutmask(D1) " and
hit return and the macro executes and displays the proper value.

HOWEVER, none of the other cells change so I have to go into each one
and do the same sort of thing, add a space at the end of the line or
between the macro and the parenthesis, each time, hit return and it
works properly.

This is obviously not the correct way it should work.

Hence my query about "starting" macros when the document is opened.

So, that leads to, am *I* doing something wrong?

Thanks for everyone's time.

Thanks for the reply.

Here's the thing. It's not that I want to force a recalculate, it's
that I have to in order to get the macros to respond.

Here's an example: (What I expect when the spreadsheet finishes
opening.)

/*Cell*//*
*/ /*Contents*//*
*/ /*Display*//*
*/
D1
192.168.17.231/24
192.168.17.231/24
D2
=ipwithoutmask(D1)
192.168.17.231
D3
=ipmask(D1)
255.255.255.0
D4
=ipmasklken(D3)
24

Now, when I actually do open the spreadsheet, it says:

/*Cell*//*
*/ /*Contents*//*
*/ /*Display*//*
*/
D1
192.168.17.231/24
192.168.17.231/24
D2
=ipwithoutmask(D1)
#NAME?
D3
=ipmask(D1)
#NAME?
D4
=ipmasklken(D3)
#NAME?

So, if I say it differently, it *seems* like the Macros aren't run
when the spreadsheet is opened.

The macro library has a "Main" entry that is empty. If I choose
"Tools" -> "Macros" -> "Run macro" and then select "Main" and
execute it, there's no visible change.

BUT, if I go into the contents of "D2" and add a space at the end of
the formula "=ipwithoutmask(D1)" to read "=ipwithoutmask(D1) " and
hit return and the macro executes and displays the proper value.

HOWEVER, none of the other cells change so I have to go into each
one and do the same sort of thing, add a space at the end of the
line or between the macro and the parenthesis, each time, hit return
and it works properly.

This is obviously not the correct way it should work.

Hence my query about "starting" macros when the document is opened.

So, that leads to, am *I* doing something wrong?

Thanks for everyone's time.

It is.

I can remove the shortcut Ctrl+f or change it
to something else and then delete it but Ctrl+f still activates
the find
tool bar.

I just tested that and it doesn't work. Ctrl+f does nothing efter
removing it and reset won't bring it back once I left the Customize
dialogue. Fortunately I saved my settings before this test, so I
could bring it back by reading it back in.

I'm on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 (Xfce), LibreOffice 7.3.6.2.

Did you set this with ”LibreOffice” or ”Writer” checked in the upper
right corner on the customize dialogue? When ”Writer is checked”,
Ctrl+f is empty, when ”LibreOffice” is selected, Ctrl+f is linked to
Find (or Search or whatever it's called in the English version).

As though it is hard coded.

Doesn't seem to be on my system, at least.

It is worse than I thought.
As the OP was using Calc, I was testing with Calc set in upper right.
On my OpenSUSE 15.4 using SUSE repository version of LO Calc
(7.3.6.2) always goes to the Find dialogue with ctl-F unset or reset.
However now trying Writer (and LibreOffice in upper right) this is
not the case. As you state above removing it and reset won't bring it
back. During the process I set ctl-F = "About LibreOffice" and now
this persists in writer after removing it or resetting even though
Calc is fine. On the upside I have a handy shortcut if I ever want to
check my version of LO whilst in Writer

And I find now that Reset doesn't reset the shortcut keys to the default.

Filed bug https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151832
and added to Meta https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98259

On my Mac it cannot be restored
without a reset.

That's probably a bug. I don't know if anyone reported it, but I guess
someone should.
I will check to see if present also on Linux and file a bug. I could not
locate an existing bug for this.
Also the fact that cmd-F does not work and cannot be added to keyboard

Before customizing, you can save your current settings, and then
(hopefully) bring them back if something goes wrong. Maybe worth to
consider next time. :)

I thought I was making headway but just got myself into more of a problem.

The link above is a sample of what Im working with.
In this spread sheet I have hundreds of sections of this that are
added to and updated.

If you click on cell BG4 you'll see the IF hell function that I
continually update (and fix).
This is created by someone else and the IF statement doesnt account
for all the things
that are currently going on but - in general - Section One is B4 to
I4. The entire colored
space from B3 to I13 is the whole section. Each row is calculated by
putting in 1 thru 4 under
each item name, though at the moment, and the reason Im looking to do
this [upgrade] is that
3 and 4 and the coming 5 are not being calculated.

Row 4, B4 to I4 either a 1 or 2 is put in. J4 is the number of items.
Cell BE4 totals all items from each section.

Cell BG4 - currently the massive and incorrect IF statement - adds up
each cell and calculates
a number. In this example, F4 is BL SM and is a 1 so BG is 38. Each
row can have a 1 thru 4
(upcoming 5) in each of the available cells.

Looking at Row 7, Cell BG7 is the start of something I thought would
work but... I got stuck.
And, to be really honest, I got stuck writing this email for help
because - I got lost in trying to
explain this HAHA

Looking at the function in BG7, check if its a number first and then
look up the value of F3 item
1 in Sheet two which is 38. Cell BG8 does the same but shows the
quickly growing IF statement
for getting data for 2 cells.

Question: does someone know of an easier way to do this without
ongoing IF statements?

Wade

Steve, As a courtesy I have sent you a month's worth of data in a csv

as by no means is it a simple one especially when all you want is the
rainfall on each of the days of the month. into Base
My understanding is that VLOOKUP only returns 1 value, rather than a
vector from which to determine a date.

I believe what I need to accomplish cannot be done with VLOOKUP and
that a combination of INDEX(MATCH()) is a better solution especially
given that the RAW Data file import is going to grow approximately 1MB
per month, despite being just .csv type.

Moving on from this means that the whole file should preferably be
manipulated in Base.
Great idea. I currently do a similar thing loading the data csv file
direct into MySQL every day with a Perl script and then display my
queries and analysis in web pages for our employees using PHP. For me
this is much simpler and more flexible and than Calc or Base, especially
in a multi-user environment

The Date column is formatted as number and the simplified Date is
 formatted as text.

Is VLOOKUP fussy about the format of the cells it must search? I
 thought
it is just matching a string of characters?

It's not fussy about the format, but rather about the actual value in
the cells, because if it's formatted as a date, it's really just a
number (0.0 = 1899-12-30 00:00:00 and so on

The tab called Raw Data is actually a .csv import of an external file on
which I have no ability to determine how the columns are formatted.

How do you import your file?
What would be an example of a complete line in that CSV file?
Further to Johnny's question, how is the CSV delimited. Do you just have

vector from which to determine a date.

As time progresses so I will download another .csv file and overwrite
the existing one with an updated file.

The bits that contain any formula will remain unchanged, apart from
having their ranges extended due to the additional rows added.

But I wonder about the other column that is formatted as text. What do
you mean by that?

I clicked on one of the cells in the Simple Date column and selected
'Format->Cell' and it returned that is how it was formatted.

Tnx

Re: [libreoffice-users] Tab Bug?

2022-08-09 Thread Steve Edmonds

I suppose you have lots of rows and columns.
I don't think it is a bug in writer not to overwrite letters in a
"layer" but you may achieve the visual effect you are wanting by making
each column a text box, each wide enough for the full number, right
aligned, overlaying to the left, text boxes spaced 0.5".

Using v7.3.4.2, so pretty well up to date. Language is English (USA) and
commas/decimals are set correctly.

Tab stops are .5 inches apart, so the numbers definitely overflow (seven digits
plus commas, 11 point type). However, in my expectations (a) right tabs should
work the same as left tabs, regardless of length, and (b) in a word processing
document I don't expect numbers to be treated any differently from plain text
-- except in the case of a decimal tab. I'm using only whole numbers, though.

I need the columns to overlap because of the nature of the report. I don't
have space to have three 1.25-inch columns at the right edge of the page and
the corresponding left tabs on the left side (this is a financial report with
subaccounts).

Similar problem in the spreadsheet, though it's more expected there. I need the
columns to be .5" wide, not wide enough to hold the whole number. Text would
overflow into the cell on the right (if it's empty), and I hoped -- but didn't
really expect -- numbers to do the same to the left.

The problem is that I need numbers to line up properly in right-justified
columns, without resorting to a fixed-space font (so the leading spaces are the
same width) and using left tabs.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Badly formatted document

2022-07-04 Thread Steve Edmonds

Is it possible it is an old document from an earlier version of LO.
A while back the way LO anchored images (and frames) was changed, images
in tables were particularly affected throwing out text positioning also
and I had to go through all my manuals and change my image anchoring to
"as character".

columns. Is there a simple way to strip out everything bar the words? I have
tried saving it as a txt file, but this loses a lot of the paragraph numbering
and introduces other layout issues. Saving in rtf format is even worse.

The best I have managed so far has been by converting all the text to a single
style and removing the columns. All the graphics however overlap text and it is
often very difficult to find the anchor point.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc function COUNTA

2022-06-25 Thread Steve Edmonds
From the help COUNTA(Number 1 [; Number 2 [; … [; Number 255]]])
where*Number 1*, *Number 2*, ..., *Number 255* are numbers, references
to cells or to cell ranges of numbers.

 * The function counts numbers, dates, error values(Err:502), logical
values (like TRUE ) or a text representation of numbers (like "7")
passed either as arguments or a reference to the cells or as an
array however, empty cells in the reference are not counted.

In your case ISBLANK=0 is seen as Number 2 which is a logical value and
so is counted as 1.

I wanted to count the number of non-blank items in a list of items
using COUNTA.

Cell A1 has the formula =COUNTA(A$2:A$1, ISBLANK=0) above an
otherwise empty column. It returns the value 1!

Is that supposed to mean something? Has anyone notice this?
It's obviously not a big problem, because a workaround is obvious.
But do I have to mistrust the results of the COUNTA function?

Cheers
Harvey

Re: [libreoffice-users] ROUND function consistency

2022-06-06 Thread Steve Edmonds
I agree this is not a bug and also find the different functions are not
consistent in their approach.
Some investigation and analysis shows that using bankers rounding
results in less accumulated rounding error or bias when processing
monetary values than the ROUND() function in Calc. I have also found
that different jurisdictions may define their own rounding approach.

For instance the Australian Tax Office states that when calculating
sales tax, portions of a cent 0.5 and below should be rounded down,
above 0.5 rounded up. This is opposite to that performed by the ROUND()
function but possibly has the logic of accumulating the rounding error
in favour of the tax payer rather than the tax department and this is
the approach I have adopted in my macro.

On 06/06/2022 07:01, Andrew Pitonyak wrote:

Sorry, this is NOT a bug. This is exactly the result I expect if I was

I say this without looking at the code, but, you specifically told LO
to use the VBA version of rounding, which is NOT normal rounding. VBA
rounding uses bankers rounding.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/vba/language/reference/user-interface-help/round-function

With "Bankers Rounding", when numbers are equidistant from the two
nearest integers, they are rounded to the nearest even integer;
therefore, 0.5 rounds down to 0; 1.5 rounds up to 2.

So, it looks like you are getting the correct answer because you
turned on VBA support so the round function should act like the VBA
round function. If you really were writing a macro using Microsoft
Office (MSO), you would probably have used Math.Round() (I think that
is what it is called) to use the rounding that you were expecting.

Re: [libreoffice-users] ROUND function consistency

2022-06-05 Thread Steve Edmonds

I just performed a bit of a test.
Cells across.
A1| =RANDBETWEEN(0,10)/100  # simulate dollar and cent amounts
between 0.00 and $1000.00

B1| =A1*0.15                    # simulate a tax of 15% on the amounts in A
C1| =ROUND(B1,2)                # round the tax amount to 2 places
(whole cents) using the Calc ROUND function
D1| =VBRND(B1,2)                # round the tax to 2 places using a
macro function that uses the VBA compatible round function (bankers
rounding)

E1| =INT(B1*100+0.5)/100        # round the tax the old school way.

Function VBRND(c,d)
VBRND = round(c,d)
End Function

I then copied this row down another 999 rows and performed some
summation at the bottom of the 1000 results. I regenerated the random

With this method if next digit is 1,2,3,4 the number
rounds down. If it is 6,7,8,9 it rounds up. If 0 it does
nothing, but if it is 5, it has to check if the key pervious
digit is an even or old number. If it is even, then it rounds
down, if odd it rounds up.

The regular LibreOffice round uses the standard round
function.

Usually, the standard round is used, but know that some
government regulations require the banking/roundeven
or roundodd method.

Was surprized that excell's would default to banking?
Note sure why they don't provide one for each method, or
have an option to set.

Looks like a bug to me. 12.125 returns 12.12, but 12.1251 returns 12.13.
Both should return the same.
I guess this bug should be reported.
Meanwhile, you can make your own function that you can use. Here are two
different suggestions.

1: This one use the Calc built-in ROUND() cell function. Place it in "My
macros & dialogs". VBA compatibility mode is not needed.

Public Function faRound(x As Double, d As Integer)
Dim Calc
Calc=createUnoService("com.sun.star.sheet.FunctionAccess")
faRound=Calc.callFunction("ROUND", Array(x, d))
End Function

2: This one use the method we learned at school:
Public Function fRound(x As Double, d As Integer)
fRound=Int(10^d*x+.5)/10^d
End Function

Test:
Print afRound(12.125, 2)
Result: 12.13

Print fRound(12.125, 2)
Result: 12.13

Print fRound(12.125, 1)
Result: 12.1

... and so on.

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] Clearing formatting.

2022-04-07 Thread Steve Edmonds
The data is from part of a table on a public page but created in
response to entering a street address.
There are no issues when I paste the data if I select "detect special
numbers" and there are no issues processing the numbers preceded with a
'  in a calculation.

I started wondering why LO doesn't see '123 as a format it can change or
is it an over riding format that LO won't change and when I have a
format like '123 how do I get it back to a number. If I type '123 into a
cell, Format>Cells.. tells me it is a number, I can use it in a formula
but can't sum it.

If you format a cell as text (right click or Format>Cells..) and type in
$123.00 you have some text as expected. If you delete the $ you have
123.00. If you now Format>Cells.. and select Number>General you would
expect this to become a number format, but LO inserts the ' so it
becomes '123.00 and changes the cell format to number but forcing the
contents to remain as text.

From this point my question arose as to how to remove the ' so the
contents of the cell became a number, and which Brian solved for me.

Hi, just wondering if there is an easy way to clear formatting of the
style '2892 where the apostrophe is used.
When I paste data from a web page LO inserts the apostrophe by default.
I realise there are options on pasting to have numbers pasted as text,
but my query is in regards converting '2892 to the number 2892.

Not sure this would work.
Assuming you are using text formatting dialog option.
You could click on the other option in addition to
whatever filtering options you are using. Then put the
apostrophe in the position after the other.
You will end up with a column with the blanks where the
apostrophy was. Would then just delete that column.
That does assume that all numbers in column have
apostrophy and that other cells don't have apostrophy's?
Another option that might work for you.
Past data as currently done.
In another column to right put formula
No leading " an assuming D1 is cell with '2982 format
numbers. Tried to match with "`" but it didn't work?? Had
to use code and ascii value for `'
\u201c=IF(CODE(LEFT(D1,1))=39,VALUE(MID(D1,2,20)),d1)
If all numbers have ` you could just use.
No leading "
\u201c=VALUE(MID(D1,2,20))

Then copy the formula going down.
Then highlight. Ctrl-C, and the Shift-Ctrl-V over original
data, rather than doing one cell at a time.

Perhaps one of those would work with your data.
Good Luck. Have a nice day.

I cannot Format Cells... format as number or clear direct formatting or
find and replace the '. I can Ctl-x, Ctl-Shft-v and paste and the ' is
cleared.

Are we talking spreadsheets? I don't think you mean formatting at all.
At least, I suspect those apostrophes do not appear in the spreadsheet
cells but instead only in the Input Line when you select a relevant
cell. The apostrophe is just an indication - a warning - that what
looks like a number in the cell is actually text. (Another indication
may be that the values are left- rather than right-aligned by default.)

I cannot Format Cells... format as number or clear direct formatting ...

Well, you can do all of those things, but none of them will change the
values you have in the cells, which is what you need to do - to
convert text to the numerical value of that text, to convert
two-eight-nine-two to two thousand, eight hundred and ninety-two.

... or find and replace the '.

You certainly cannot do that, as there is no apostrophe in the cell
value to be found!

Here's an easy way:
o Select the column of values.
o Go to Data | Text to Columns... .
o OK.

I trust this helps.

Thanks Brian, the above worked.

I have Standard toolbar on Writer but there are already places there for
Font Style, size and a ton of other icons.

If you right-click on one of those icons and select Customize Toolbar, you
should see a large dialogue window. The Target field should indicate the
name of the toolbar that you're customizing, presumably Standard if that's
the only one with a checkmark in View > Toolbars. The dialogue window
allows you to completely change the contents of any toolbar.

Format> Page SetUp>Columns and chose 2

Then, using the mouse I grabbed the center box in the PNG and dragged that
down halfway on the screen but that just compresses the graphic like a
circus mirror.

I then chose Print and in there I can choose Pages per sheet (default to
set at 1) so I typed in 4 where that 1 was displayed and clicked Print to
PDF which saves that PNG in the top left corner with 3 others corners blank.

Is there another step needed to "duplicate" or "multiply" that PNG from
the top left corner so it's in all 3 other other areas (now blank) on the
single sheet?

Thank you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Extracting content out of table format received in an email

What I have done before is to click Forward for that email which then
enables me to edit the format of the newsletter (delete rows I don't
want, etc.) and then send it to myself and copy/paste the simplified table.

Another thing I have done is to copy and paste into Calc and adjust the
structure there and then copy into Writer.

And then sometimes I just take a screen clip and insert that as an image.

The choice comes down to the structure in the email and what I am trying

Re: [libreoffice-users] Question on INDIRECT()

2021-10-23 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi Rob, did you ever get this answered.
You could use something like the below for the cells with a '+' in them.
Assuming below is row 4, vertical bars are cell borders.
|25+15|=VALUE(LEFT(A4,FIND("+",A4)-1))+VALUE(RIGHT(A4,LEN(A4)-FIND("+",A4)))|

If you need it to be generic for with/without the + then you could use
an IF to check, shown below for row 5.

=IF(ISNUMBER(A5),A5,VALUE(LEFT(A5,FIND("+",A5)-1))+VALUE(RIGHT(A5,LEN(A5)-FIND("+",A5

Hi John.
What version of Libreoffice are you on.
When you say you want to print a section of a sheet, is that a single
section on just one sheet or sections of multiple sheets.

For me on a single sheet, sometimes the print range has some history

I go Format>Print Ranges>Clear to start.
Then I highlight the range to print with the mouse and go Format>Print
Ranges>Define.

Then I go to File>Print Preview to see how many pages that selected
range will print on, and if necessary adjust the top -/+ slider or page
format to suit my needs.

Re: [libreoffice-users] extracting cell values

2021-09-25 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi Miss  K.
The purpose of your request is not clear.
For the situation where I want to de-reference a value I use copy and
then paste-special selecting only numbers.
If you want 167 in A1 and 16.7 in A2 so that is stays 16.7 even if A1
changes then possibly in B1 put =A1/10 then copy B1 and in A2
paste-special selecting only numbers to paste.
I arrange the type of calculation above so that I can copy/paste-special
rows or columns at a time.

If I put =A1/10 into A2, A2 will contain A1/10, not 16.7,even though

I want to get away from cell references and use the contained values.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Default file name for Export Directly as PDF is now blank.

2021-08-30 Thread Steve Edmonds

I think I have this worked out.
If the PDF exists already the Name field is blank.
If the PDF doesn't exist the Name field is filled with the name of the file.

The older files that were working before saving (as .odt) were .sxw.
It would save time hunting down the PDF file to overwrite and avoid a
mistake of overwriting a wrong file if the Name field was filled by default.

I have just been updating some older documents and with these, as long
as I have not saved them, Export Directly as PDF has the Name field
pre-filled with the file name. As soon as I save the odt file the Name

I thought may be this was some setting in LO options but it seems

Should the Name field in file dialogue to Export Directly as PDF be
