Re: [libreoffice-users] Styles mess
On Sun, 26 Oct 2014 19:02:44 +0100 Johnny Rosenberg gurus.knu...@gmail.com wrote: This thing happens in both Apache OpenOffice Calc and LibreOffice Calc which makes me thing I did something wrong, but after almost a year of debugging and trying some different approaches, I still have no idea what is going on. I have a few styles that I made, but one of them keeps messing around. There are three cell that use this style, but only if the value is negative. When the value is positive, the numbers are supposed to be displayed in some custom red colour and when it's negative the colour is supposed to be some custom green (indicating that I am below budget, which in this case is good, hence green…). I use one style for each of these conditions, since I don't, and don't want to, use the standard [RED] and [GREEN] colours. The ”below zero” style is called ”UnderTot” and the ”Above zero” one is called ”ÖverTot”. The one that is messing with me is ”UnderTot”. I use conditional formatting for this. Here are the number formats: ÖverTot: +# ##0,00 [$kr-41D] Example: +2 345,67 kr Colour: Custom red. UnderTot: # ##0,00 [$kr-41D] Example: -2 345,67 kr Colour: Custom green. Steps: Make sure at least one of the three cells has a negative value. Save the file. Close the file. Open the file. If it still looks right, enter a new value in one of the three cells. Now the cell format of the ”UnderTot” style changed. Last time I tested, the format code was changed to ”Standard”, but different things happens different times. All the other styles works perfectly. The ”UnderTot” style is linked to a stylle called ”Under”, but ”Under” works perfectly. It's not just the format of the cells that are changed, I verified that the style actually changed itself. I just want some ideas what could have been wrong. I am sure I did something wrong but I lack more ideas what to look for, so any kind of idea is welcome. Thanks in advance! If someone wants the file for testing, let me know. I guess I can't attach it to this message anyway, so I won't even try that. Kind regards Johnny Rosenberg ジョニー・ローゼンバーグ I rarely use styles in calc so this response may be invalid for you. I notice there is no - for UnderTot as you showed. Is this intentional? Here are the number formats: ÖverTot: +# ##0,00 [$kr-41D] Example: +2 345,67 kr Colour: Custom red. UnderTot: # ##0,00 [$kr-41D] no - Example: -2 345,67 kr Colour: Custom green. The ONLY purpose of a template is to create a NEW file having the desired characteristics. It should not be written to or it could be damaged and not produce the desired results upon future use. As an example, if you do much writing of program code, you probably use a template in your text editor for the language you are coding in. In that case you select the template to use and the editor creates a NEW text file based upon the template. Same principal. Use the template to create a NEW file and then import the csv data into the NEW file and save it. A good practice when requesting help from a list such as this one is to provide as much information as possible and let the viewers/responders sift through it. This could include make/model of computer, type of display adapter (if known), operating system and version, version of LO (or other app), what you were doing at the time of an error/problem, and any other information that seems pertinent. It is often to also include copies of pertinent log files for review. Some of this is difficult for a non-technical person to determine but provide what you are able and we will request more if needed (and tell you how to get it). Another worthwhile item to provide are screen shots depicting the problem. If you would provide as much of the above information we will try to respond with helpful suggestions. Actually, with the number of authors who use LO, you might well find further information in the FAQs. Tom -- The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance. You should be. ;-) If you want an English book on programming with Base, look at Roberto Benitez' book : http://www.amazon.com/Database-Programming-OpenOffice-org-Base-Basic/dp/0557007585/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8qid=1345449641sr=8-11keywords=roberto+benitez Also check out Andrew Pitonyak's use of Basic with Base : http://www.pitonyak.org/database/ If you can read German, I would suggest one of Thomas Krumbein's books : http://www.amazon.com/Datenbanken-mit-OpenOffice-org-Base-HSQLDB/dp/383621301X/ref=sr_1_4?s=booksie=UTF8qid=1345449757sr=1-4keywords=thomas+krumbein If you can read French, check out Laurent Godard/Bernard Marcelly's book : http://www.eyrolles.com/Informatique/Livre/programmation-openoffice-org-et-libreoffice-9782212132472 The fact that most of the books/references above relate to OpenOffice.org and not LibreOffice is not a major obstacle, there have not been that many significant changes in the Base module behaviour since the creation of the LibreOffice project : - AOOo has moved its hsqldb engine to an improved version 2, whereas LO is still stuck on version 1.8 ; - AOOo has removed direct support for the mysql native connector due to licensing issues, it is still provided as a download for older versions of OOo, but is no longer being actively supported ; - LO no longer has any actively supported native mysql connector either, but for the moment, an attempt to not break the existing external extension is being maintained ; - LO has read/write native connector support for postgresql - this, I believe, is a major improvement over AOOo, which only had read support, and the postgres native connector is no longer even offered with AOOo due to licensing issues ; - both AOOo and LO support JDBC driver connections to postgresql and mysql databases ; - both AOOo and LO are supposed to support ODBC driver connections - however, this is very dependent on OS, bit version architecture (32/64) and buggy behaviours of the 3rd party drivers ; - LO support of MS Access databases on Windows is variable according to LO version and Access mdb/accdb version - one day it works with one version of LO, the next it doesn't, so your mileage may vary - I can't speak for AOOo here as I haven't tested that bit ; - Access databases are not supported in either LO or AOOo on other OSes (i.e. Linux/Mac), to my knowledge - these are usually dealt with by 3rd party programs. This is only a short comparison, I'm sure there are other points that could be mentioned, but on the whole, the basic DB functionality between the two is pretty much the same. That situation is likely to change with the switch to LO version 4 development, where it has already been decided that backwards version (ABI) compatibility for all functionalities of the LO suite will not be guaranteed. At the moment, I have no idea how that will affect Base, but it will almost certainly affect any extensions that are currently available. Alex Thanks for all that information, Alex! [libreoffice-users] Numerical terms used in Base
It's been way too many years since I did commercial programming on databases and I've forgotten some of the terms (formats) for numerical data. I'm trying to create a simple database of local facilities/doctors/stores with Base using the wizards. The formats that are giving me trouble are: Text[VARCHAR]- a variable number of type CHAR? The pdfimport extension (if at all installed by default with openSuse) will only open the PDFs fed from your scanner as a bitmapped image in Draw. Your forms as scanned with your Brother MFC will usually be supplied in one of the following formats : - PDF - TIFF Group 4 - JPG (2000 ?) - PNG (if you're lucky) - BMP All of those are bitmap formats. The only way your form can be transformed into something useful is through the use of an OCR/vectorisation programme. I don't know of any worthwhile, free, Linux-based solutions to your problem. Yes, there are opensource OCR programs for Linux, but on the whole, I have found them to be woefully lacking, and most certainly cannot handle form objects, tick boxes, and the like. It is just about all they can do to read text in English. There may be pay solutions out there, I don't know, and haven't looked in a while. As far as I know, you won't find anything that will work directly with LibreOffice, as in, transform your scanned form into something editable and changeable within LO, unless the PDF output you provide from your scanner/ocr application can supply PDF-conform embedded objects that can be read by the pdfimport extension, in which case they will open in Draw (which is OK, but not brilliant when you've got lots of text to edit since virtually each line appears in a separate text bounding box). Maybe others here can suggest something more appropriate/functional. Good luck with your search. Alex Thank you Jay, Tom, and Alexander. Both Writer and Draw produce an error General I/O Error when trying to import pdf, tiff, and png. The PDF Import extension is installed but has a problem, possibly in the SuSE version. I'm going to delete the SuSE version and build from scratch dirrect from Sourceforge. Again, thanks for your help. Tom After further testing with the original PDF and a couple more that I scanned and using two PDFs from other sources, it looks like the problem is with the PDF that Xsane generates, not LibreOffice opening a PDF. The two from other sources opened properly (one read only due to password) but each of the PDFs from Xsane error-ed out. Emily Akin Hi Emily :) OpenOffice probably is listed in the windows startup list. You can change this by (as administrator) click on the startup icon and in the run box entering msconfig. Go to the startup tab and delete OpenOffice. Please, when you have a new subject, don't hijack an existing thread. Many mail programs use thread information contained in the headers, NOT the subject. If your mail program shows threads you will observe that your message is in the middle of a thread about Alternate Method of Error Handling when Developing Basic Macros?. Just changing the subject doesn't start a new thread. This would help you have a better chance of getting a good answer as more people would see the subject where they skip over threads (with your message in the midst) that don't interest them.
