We warn users expressly because the other formats are export formats,

The .doc format is a filter 'export' from our native ODF document model.
Likewise OOXML of .docx format.
For greatest fidelity to a document opened into LibreOffice you should
be saving to an ODF format .odt.

If you need to exchange the document with someone who needs old binary
MS Word formats, or more recent OOXML formats, once you have
saved to .odt--you can conveniently also Save-as export to those
non-native formats--but you'll have the original fully formatted ODF

Only a few days I discovered "by accident" the tiny three horizontal

If you click on those, a number of options appear, the first of which
is "properties".

HERE the funny attributes of the style (ONE incident!) that went
haywire were displayed and could be changed!

That was all.
Isn't it funny, nobody ever mentioned this little trick?

That entire UI feature is known as the the Sidebar [1]. It hosts a
framework of 'Decks' that can be collapsed or expanded.
And each deck can contain multiple 'Content panels'. Navigation to the
Decks is via the vertical Tab bar--the top button is the 'Properties'
deck.

A picture is worthwhile so see this Wiki image over to grasp the
terminology and layout [2]

The Sidebar has several viewing modes Shown, Hidden, Collapsed to vert
Tab bar, or undocked to float--controlled from the "hamburger" icon
you'd clicked. Sounds like you'd had it collapsed to its vertical tab
bar.

The 'Spotlight' checkbox mentioned earlier appears on the SB 'Styles'
Deck, directly reachable via shortcut . While at present (24.2 and
24.8 builds) the 'Character Direct Formatting' is only available on the
main toolbar 'Format' -> 'Spotlight' menu.

But the associated UNO commands can be assigned via the menu Tools ->
Customize to other Menu, Toolbar, Context-menu, or Keyboard shortcuts.

Relevant UNO commands are:
.uno:SpotlightParaStyles (since 24.2)
.uno:SpotlightCharStyles (since 24.2)
.uno:HighlightCharDF (since 7.6)

Also the SB delivers the 'Style Inspector' Deck, kind of a new feature.
It follows the position of the Edit cursor in the document and lists the
Paragraph, Character style applied at the cursor position. It also will
list any Direct Formatting applied (to character or to paragraph).
Unfortunately at present it does not provide the same colored visual
hints as the 'Spotlight' widgets. But it is still useful especially if
you get more advanced in working with styling your documents.

Long known issue that there is limited structural navigation of the

This is NVDA issue 4119 and also remains open as tdf#91739 from 2015

NVDA work on the IAccessible2 filter.

A clunky work around of scrolling to the bottom of the document, and

When set the stanza in the registrymodifications.xcu registry setting

Only deleting that profile .xcu, or doing a profile reset (via UI)

Further to Robert's response. You can also OLE object insert an ODF
drawing document .ODG (main menu Insert -> OLE Object -> OLE Object...).

But will need to select the 'Create from file' radio button on the
dialog. Will have to adjust the resulting OLE frame to your needs.
You can also choose to link to the OLE object (allowing changes to the
original to update the insertion on its next edit session).

It is functional, but it is usually much more efficient to export from
Draw in a raster or vector format, and then insert that image cleanly.

How do I shrink the styles sidebar? Zoom works lovely on the main window--I
used "optimal" most of the time, but that doesn't help if I can't shrink the
styles sidebar.

I can drag to make it bigger but not to make it smaller than a certain size.
And I can't find anywhere to change the font size. So, for example, if I need
to shrink the entire Writer window down to share screen space I end up with the
styles sidebar taking up half the window with large type even when the main doc
window type is so small it's hardly readable.

There must be some way to do this. I just can't find it.

Thanks.

Enter "U+0059U+035fU+006fU+035fU+0075U+035fU+0072" and then toggle with

Alternatively, LO provides an artificial underline effect from the 'Format

2021-10-22 Thread V Stuart Foote
Not even close. Decimal 61,692 or hex F0FC would be in the Unicode Private Use
Area--meaning it would depend on the font you were attempting to use.

In LibreOffice, with a specific font selected active you would enter U+F0FC on
the document canvas, and then use +X to convert from Unicode to the glyph
at the codepoint. If not defined in the font, you'd get a generic undefined
glyph.

Instead, try a known Unicode point for a check mark, and a known font (e.g.
OpenSymbol).

Type U+2611 and then +X to toggle. If you don't like the box, try U+2713
and toggle.

large sheets trigger appearance of the progress bar. It often won't show for
short sheets.

There is no manual control, nor other way to observe sheet loading directly.

How do you view the progress and activities during the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: Adapting row height is slow

2021-07-30 Thread V Stuart Foote
The other way is to open the ODF archive Zip and directly (e.g. with 7-zip) and
edit the 'content.xml' file (gvim works well when set as the Editor for 7-zip).

Find and change the 'use-optimal-row-height="true"' to "false"; there should
only be a couple of these style settings. Save the changed contentl.xml file
back into the Zip archive.

A little more tricky, to open the archive and edit the XML directly, but less
potential to make other changes to ODS Sheet formatting done like this.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: Adapting row height is slow

2021-07-30 Thread V Stuart Foote
That is issue of
tdf#124098 and
caused by tdf#62268
see comments at end of bug 62268.

Simple workaround is to get the sheet open and then remove the optimal row
height by selecting all cells and setting a row height from Format -> Rows ->
Height.

It will tweak the layout of the sheet but will restore reasonable opening speed.

I have a large (10 by 100) but simple spreadsheet.

When loading and, sometimes, editing it appears to take longer "Adapting
row height" than the rest of the processing put together. I am happy
with the existing row height and do not want it adapted.

Is there anything I can do to eliminate or speed up this part of the
processing?

Excellent! (I was wondering what happened to U+2011 as I investigated the
"General Punctuation" group.) So it's just a matter of the Liberation family
not covering the U+2011 codepoint - but a replacement glyph is provided. Thanks!

You used a term I don't recognize: "NPC". My search turned up that it is a
popular abbreviation for "non-playing character" in domains like WoW, Runelite
and lots of other things of which I know nothing, but fortunately I don't think
you used it in that context. I suspect it is close to that textually -- "non"
"character" -- but I decided I had best ask: ?

You've missed the one Unicode point that does exactly what you require, but its
use will depend on the font in use.

U+2011 NON-BREAKING HYPHEN

You can enter via LibreOffice Special Character dialog, or LibreOffice's
Unicode toggle. That is you can type U+2011 and then +X to toggle the
glyph.

If the font in use does not "cover" the codepoint, you'll get a fallback
replacement or possibly the no glyph value for the font.

When added to canvas the non-breaking hyphen character will receive NPC
highlighting.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [libreoffice-users] Non-breaking dash/hyphen

  **EXTERNAL EMAIL**
This email originated outside of The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Please exercise caution when clicking on links or opening attachments.

I had always thought that the difference between a "dash" and a "hyphen" is
that the dash is a character (that is, will not break a character string),
while the hyphen hyphenates (that is, breaks at the end of a line if the
character string following the hyphen is too long to fit on the line). So,
needing a non-breaking substitute for that horizontal bar on my keyboard, I
invoked:
Insert > Special Character
to get (what I would call) a dash.

LibreOffice has such mid-height horizontal-bar characters in three character
groups:
"General punctuation", characters:
U+2010 (HYPHEN)
U+2012 (FIGURE DASH)
U_2013 (EN DASH)
U+2014 (EM DASH)
U+2015 (HORIZONTAL BAR)
"Mathematical Operators", character:
U+2212 (MINUS SIGN)
"Box Drawing", character:
U+2500 (BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL)

The five characters of the "General Punctuation" group mostly seem to just
represent different widths of hyphen (despite three being called FIGURE DASH,
EN DASH, EM DASH), in that in a character string each will end a line of
characters if the string following is too long to fit. Only the HORIZONTAL BAR
acts as a common character, such that the string of which it is a member will
not break there; but it is very long to be used as a non-breaking hyphen.

The MINUS SIGN in the "Mathematical Operators" group has a special operation:
It will break at the end of a line, but will itself move to the next line, to
stay with the character following MINUS SIGN.

The BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL character acts like the HORIZONTAL BAR --
that is, as a true, non-breaking character -- but is also too long to be used
generally as a non-breaking hyphen.

Is there a clean way to make a non-breaking dash/hyphen?

Having no problems until once again that slider on the left side decided
to disappear;

then somehow it re-appeared, but now is only 1/2 the length size,
rather than extending the length of the space on the left side,
it's 1/2 the size & is in a floating (?) rather than stable
position.

Please explain what causes this to disappear; & please explain how to
get it back - & now how to get it back to its original size & into its
permanent, rather than floating spot.

   Thanks in advance,

For Windows users, the freeware BabelMap utility (Andrew West's BabelStone

Please note that OpenGL GPU support has little to do with the OpenCL
features used in Calc, so you should be fine to reenable the OpenCL and
check.

Also, OpenGL is being deprecated in favor of a Skia Vulkan rendering--that
is already in place for the 7.0 release of LibreOffice where OpenGL is only
available via the Advanced -> Expert Configuration dialog. There are
driver/GPU pairing issues still with Skia--and Vulkan vector engine may be
blocked, but driver support is more consistent.

Point is, when convenient take a 7.0 or 7.1 nightly build out for test drive
with Skia rendering support. Done with a "msiexec.exe /A" administrative
install of the MSI package. Assistance here: Installing in parallel on
Windows

That is the "contextual" nature of the toolbar responding to UI navigation
onto a Table object.

You can limit its annoyance by launching the toolbar (View -> Toolbars ->
Table) and from its context menu: select 'Dock Toolbar'. Default position
will be at the bottom of the LibreOffice frame, above the 'Status bar'. But
it can be dragged to redock at any location in the frame.

And aside from simply docking the toolbar, as Dave B. notes, if you uncheck
View -> Toolbars menu entry while the toolbar is visible it will remain
hidden while navigating onto Table objects, or when creating new tables.

This would seem to be an import filter issue. There have been a few (last
the 4.3 release), but the filter handling always is dependent on what actual
file structure is being parsed against a .xls extension.

Meaning, we need to see an example of the .XLS file causing you greief, and
knwo the specifics of your LibreOffice build and operating system and

Those details are best provided in the project Bugzilla instance--

Hmm, you may have made a wrong turn here, likely my fault for not responding
sooner--sorry!

I just opened the Macro in palettemaker_v1_1_0_0_en-2.ods and noticed
you're attempting a conversion of RGB2HSL ('L' luminance), we don't use
those values in the LibreOffice "Color Picker".

We do use HSL values, but just in a few places when we are adjusting
colors for the UI, or in image editing.

For palette work the values are HSV -- 'V' value (also known as HSB -- 'B'
brightness ) a much simpler algorithm to implement which LibO does in
bcolortools [1], as used by the "Color Picker" to during color space
conversions in the GUI [2].

The other thing I noticed--after enabling macros, if I import a large color
palette for editing the sheet holding the palette gives the count of colors
in the palette then truncates the sheet at 1100 colors. Some folks like
really large palettes--is there a hard limit preventing the sheet from going
larger?

CVE-2019-9847 , CVE-2019-9848, and CVE-2019-9849 have all be corrected by
TDF for current "Fresh" 6.3.0 and "Still" 6.2.5 release builds. Follow the
TDF Discuss mail list
   for any
security related issues.

Otherwise, sorry but the 6.1 branch is not supported by TDF, it is
End-of-Life effective 2019-05-29

The 6.3 branch was released 2019-08-08 and its 6.3.0 build is current
"Fresh" release

The 6.2 branch has now become the "Still" branch, with the patched 6.2.5
release available (and the 6.2.6 release candidate already built and
available for testing).

Meaning that either users Linux distro must update their packaging, or
users must seek 3rd party support to continue to use a 6.1 or pre 6.2.5
build of LibreOffice.

But again this belongs on the Discuss mail list.

No. But have you verified that you have an entry made in your User Data?

Tools -> Options -> User Data panel, with some entry in the First/last

If they are blank (clearing a profile) the reopening will not be associated
with the user, and you text cursor will not be where left on last edit.

But, why try to move it? Just push into archive in your Gmail account--that
retains the pretty functional search that Gmail implements.

Otherwise you can export/dump the mail using Google's Takeout services [1] ,
results in --mbox--formated mail archive, and then use a portable reader (no
install) to review. Something like MBox Viewer as an example:

SourceForge - Windows MBox Viewer

Or there are more robust mbox file viewers that would require an
installation. Many free, but offering fee based advanced support.

Working in LibreOffice would probably require parsing the .mbox files and
loading to Calc cells, or better to SQL tables with a Base form--but search
will be an issue. The Apache Tika project offers an mbox parser in Java to
extract meta from the mbox for fielded data loads. But I don't think there
is anything turn-key for either Calc or Base.

Good luck... and let us know how it goes.

Jean-Francois,

Very nice! When ready would hope you will post the project Templates site:

https://extensions.libreoffice.org/templates

Two comments on its current state if I may:

1.) Rather than (or in addition to) the CMY value column, would suggest
provide an HSB (Hue-Saturation-Brightness) to match the rgb2hsv values
(https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/basegfx/source/color/bcolortools.cxx?r=7ceee0f1#103)
used in the 'Pick a color' dialog now.

2.) possibly add a chart to show the working palette as it would be laid out
in our 12 column by X rows when used in the colorpicker palette GUI.

Hmm, interesting question. The BZ tdf#73691 sheds no light, and I can't
remember any discussion of adding it to a menu. But it was prominently
advertised in the release notes for 5.1

The actual .uno:UnicodeNotationToggle command is available to assign in
Customization receiving default en-US name in Customization of "Toggle
Unicode Notation" and can be added to Menu, Toolbars, and Context menu. It
shows for LibreOffice globally as +x -- Command Name and the keyboard
shortcut are localized and configured by os.

I could possibly see it assigned to the Standard toolbar, adjacent to the
Special character dialog button.
But, I'm not sure how it could be ussed from menu, and which menu -- Insert,
Format or even Tools -- would hold it. Checked, and it does _not_ appear on
any MS Office menus.

So kind of seems the enhancement of the BZ issue was fully implemented--with
no functional reason to add it to a menu just to expose the shortcut.

More simply, if you know the Unicode point desired, U+200A --it can be
directly entered into LibreOffice and then toggled directly. The shortcut in
Windows, Linux is: +x.

If macOS we had to use a different shortcut: CMD+Option+x

(implemented in tdf#73691 as modified, macOS assigned internally in
LibreOffice source to use X_MOD1_MOD2).

That should allow you to directly enter a known Unicode glyph, just be
mindful that if working with a font that does not define a glyph you'll be
dependent on font fallback and/or will receive an "undefined glyph"
placeholder on document canvas.

It is not you, each font sets metrics for positioning the combining
diacritics--many get it wrong.

For example type "u+004du+0305", leaving the cursor after the 5. Then enter
an +x to toggle--that will combine the glyphs, but position of the
overbar will vary by font.

Liberation Serif is just wrong. Dejavu Serif and Dejavu Sans are correct, as
is Linux Libertine G--but coverage is spotty.

Noto Sans and Noto Serif are about the most consistent.

For above marks -- U+0305, or U+035e
For below marks -- U+0332, or U+035f

When you relaunch in Safe Mode you get a default user profile.

Document view with default profile is "Single page view", your profile was
probably set to "Multiple page view", or pssibly "Book view"-- select from
the three page icons on the Status bar lower right of frame next to the Zoom
slider.

Document formatting can change depending on settings in defaults compared to
customizations in user profile.

Personally, moving between major releases of LibreOffice, I would use the
Safe mode selector to clean up user profile--a complete flush back to
defaults is often the best approach (needing to recreate customizations and
reinstall any extensions), but worth the effort for a clean UX.

If you toggle the Formatting Marks on, with +F10, you will see that
each line is actually a paragraph. You need to collapse the multiple lines
into single lines with the Find & Replace dialog. But before that you'll
want to mark the actual paragraph endings with a unique text sequence.
You'll need that to split things back up after they're joined.

Select all of the Text you need to reformat.

Open the Find & Replace dialog, with +H, enable its Regular
Expressions check box.

Enter "$" in the Find field
Enter " " in the Replace field

Your choice then to Find Next / Replace, or Find All / Replace All

Then do the same against the text marks you set. But here your replacement
is "\n".

[libreoffice-users] Re: Draw changes font when opening pdf text file.

2019-03-18 Thread V Stuart Foote
The pdfimport was brought in from the Sun/Oracle extension. It was never
intended to provide PDF editing, nor does it! So, please keep in mind that
LibreOffice is not a PDF editor.

Otherwise, this is a known limitation of our pdfimport draw object filter:

see tdf#101220

When filter imported--reading the layout and converting to native SVM
objects--the embedded glyphs "subset" into a PDF receive replacement font(s)
within LibreOffice. This is a practical mater as most PDF do not embed the
*full* font files needed to be able to "edit" a PDF. Rather, the embedded
*subset* is just those glyphs composing the PDF--again not a problem as
LibreOffice is not a PDF "editor".

While not using the subset glyphs is potentially a filter implementation
issue--more likely it is internal to our font handling which requires
Unicode based fonts--but as most PDF is generated with glyphs assigned to
PUA and legacy "Adobe" code table mappings replacment font handling is
necessary.

Currently for PDFs that fully embed fonts, LibreOffice will not "install"
those fonts. Meaning it is incumbent on the user to ensure they review the
fonts composing a PDF and obtain them for use--or work with LibreOffice's
font substitution dialog to assign a metric equivalent replacement.

Even then there can be font naming issues--the font name extracted from PDF
does not match the font name on system--so fallback occurs even though the
font is present. Use of the font-replacment dialog is necessary.

For high fidelity rendering of PDF, the "new" ipdf filter uses pdfium (a
FOSS Google Chrome project) to render PDF to bitmap image on document
canvas. That filter is evolving, to provide insertion of multi-page PDF.
And, to improve the "break" action to bring improved fidelity to the
resulting text strings and eventually skia based draw objects--right now it
is a work in progress and font handling on break is a shambles.

Set up a template document holding the styles you need to apply to the
various pieces of your manuscript. Then adjusting one of the styles can be
modified and applied to the entire manuscript.

See the Byfield book -- http://designingwithlibreoffice.com it is pretty
comprehensive, and you'll get the idea of working with templates and styles
to make things consistent.

No that is intentional, result of work on tdf#80196
   the empty out

the swatches are held in correct relationship in our "new" 12 column color

Hi Tim,

Testing on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit en-US with
Version: 6.1.4.2 (x64)
Build ID: 9d0f32d1f0b509096fd65e0d4bec26ddd1938fd3
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0; UI render: GL;
Locale: en-US (en_US); Calc: group threaded

The OXT loads without issue and the extension including the plain text XML
.soc file is dropped into the uno_packages for the current user %APPDATA

Extension installs for current user, no apparent way to adjust to install
for all users.

Removes without issue , and a cache cleanup after restart deletes the entry
in the uno_packages directory.

The .SOC file can be copied, and continues to work, to the default palette
directory in the install directory, e.g. C:\Program
Files\LibreOFfice\share\palette

The full palette loads into Draw's Color Bar once it has been set as in the
color picker run in another module.

The XML looks fine, but I would probably split line #14 to get that block of
LO colors onto their own lines. With ~1400 colors, the extra lines are no
big deal but it improves readability of the color table.

All in all, looks to be a functional extension, if overwhelming.

tdf#102615

Think issue was to not change defaults until they could be recorded to user

At the moment with the OpenGrok git reindex running for CORE I'm unable to
figure out what "Formatted Display" checkbox does.

Bah, never-mind. Once I plugged in some formulas that calculate a
result--those results are *not* found on search from the Find toolbar. And
if the search string is a part of the formula it is found.

E.g. cell value entry of 31.5, a fomula entry of =31.5*2 and a formula
entry of =63/2

The first two are found on search, the third is not. The "Formatted
Display" checkbox has no affect.

@Johnny,

Unless I am really misunderstanding, the "Formatted Display" check box will
shift search results to match against the *values* as formatted to cell. A
generalized implementation of the Find & Replace dialog's "Search in"
listbox selection.

Should give you your find results via the Find toolbar.

The correction in the Replace table is ".*(C)" replaced with "©"

Meaning just an upper case (C) and not a lower case (c) will trigger the

Yes sorry, that is correct. They are different deletions. The "Delete"
performs what is also called a "forward delete".
Have looked at the project source code. The forward delete action is among
a class of actions directly implemented in the edit shell and assigned to
the keyboard (symkey) for the Delete key.

It is not available to assign to additional Keyboard shortcut or menu
entry.

Doing so would require creation of an UNO commond to perform the deletion,
that would be available for use in UI customization.

Sorry.

The *delete* you want is assigned in LibreOffice via the "Backspace"
function, aka a *rubout*.

In Tools -> Customize: Keyboard tab, select the Ctrl+d key--then search in
the Functions field for "backspace", then click on Modify. The Ctrl+D key
will drop double underline and take on Backspace. Both it and the Backspace
key will now show that function.

Exactly, but would caution that while LibreOffice filter handling of PDF is
now *very* good when "inserting" a PDF as an image (it is pdfium based and
will use the embedded fonts correctly to render the PDF as image) but it
will perform exactly the same font substitution and fallback when the PDF is
filter imported and opened in Draw (default) or Calc, Writer, or Impress.

LibreOffice's hybrid-PDF solves much of this, but folks should understand
that LibreOffice is not and can *never* be a PDF editor.

No, it is not a default "Short-cut" and never has been, rather it is an
algorithm assigned "accelerator" generated for the Insert menu--it will vary
based on locale.

So, here the accelerator would be -> I ->P, for S_p_ecial Character,
and --accelerators have different scope than shortcuts, applying only
to the menu where shown.

However, you can set a Shortcut for +P (or any other unassigned key)
from the Tools -> Customize dialog.

You would assign a Keyboard shortcut against the "Symbol" function to
directly launch the Special Character dialog.

At the 6.0 release the dialog includes a bar with recently used glyphs and
favorites.

At the 6.1 release the standard toolbar includes a hidden split button
Special Character popup for easy glyph reuse, you can show that. And the
split button will become the default for the 6.2 release.

Covered at the weekly ESC meeting [1]. With some discussion in gerrit where
the commit was backed out [2], and legacy HSQLDB support restored. Seems
conversion to Firebird would become optional at 6.1, and new Base data
likely being the Firebird engine.

As of this evenings builds of master the FB3 driver is back to
experimental, so Tamás' request for Firebird data testing in Base is on hold
as this gets sorted.

Not only not worth enabling, but best to perform a custom installation and
to not install it. It has been removed from the Linux builds a LibreOffice
6.0

Microsoft dropped OSA at 2003 build of its Office products, and at Windows 7
they introduced the whole Jump List infrastructure with Jump List pinning to
Start Menu and Taskbar--elminating any advantage to enabling the
Quickstarter instance (and of pre loading a soffice.bin).

In reality LibreOffice has had no need of it for Windows 7 onward--and as
you've experienced it can cause issues.

This reminded me to go ahead and poke the UX community with tdf#116142 --

2018-02-09 Thread V Stuart Foote
Just hit to immediately dismiss the tool-tip. Otherwise the tip will
appear for 4 seconds.

We used to be able to control how long to wait (with mouse over action)
before displaying the tool-tip, but that looks a little muddled now in
source, and seems to default to 1 second.

And for Accessibility we can extend the length of time the tool-tip is
visible, from default 4-99 seconds. Set in Expert Configuration.

The timer is global, so no way to isolate the behavior in Tables. Again,
just to dismiss the tool-tip.

Meanwhile, check out the "new" View -> Toolbars -> Formatting (Styles)

There was never a "Styles" toolbar--just the "Formatting" toolbar which
remains and can be undocked and floating.

The "Styles and Formatting" dialog has been pinned into the Sidebar deck
where it is one of numerous content panels accessed via a Tab Bar. The
Sidebar deck can be undocked and floating, or docked to either side of the
UI. Either case you can select the Styles and Formatting content panel--and
at the 6.0.0 beta2 build the selected Sidebar deck will reopen when the
module opens.

Unfortunately through 5.4.4 the Sidebar deck will open to the Properties
content panels, but toolbars and Sidebar deck will be as placed.

On the "Projects" list, there is a link to the claiming of badges.

One thing I saw was the fact that people who help others in this list is
not counted for claiming badges. I do not use "Ask LibreOffice", yet,
that is the only place to help users if you want to claim a badge. As I
said, I do not use Ask LibreOffice, just the email list service. There
are a lot people here that help users. I do not know how many of these
users are answering these questions over the ones who answering on Ask
LibreOffice.

If only the people using Ask LibreOffice get recognized for helping
others, it seems to me that people who help others on this list are not
counted as helping others. Are these lists no longer the place to help
users and will be dropped soon? That is the only way I can get my head
around the fact that the helpers are not counted in the "badge page"

Nope, why it takes an expert ;-)

You pretty much must as you said try:

Oh, and take notes, or you'll do it all again. The majority of user
adjustable Expert Configuration stanzas are in *common.xcs* found here:

https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/officecfg/registry/schema/org/openoffice/Office

I find that sorting the Expert Configuration dialog by the Preference Name
field makes it easier to locate the corresponding source. For some of the
more obscure *value* settings (without comments in the .xcs) you have to
dig into the corresponding source.

As to the Help, this is all that has been done thus far for using the Expert
Configuration dialog:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Expert_Configuration

Or in the actual Help source, and a couple of the Help articles that explain
setting a value:

Otherwise believe the issue you are having was resolved for most folks as

I expect you would benefit from driver update for the GMA 4500HD GPU as that

Unfortunately you would have to manually update the driver update as Lenovo

The Java Access Bridge for Java Accessibility is not required.

As noted by Zarha, the NVAccess NVDA project is free and fully integrates

Two simple ways, results will vary by font.

A. this is artificial in that it does not follow the font designers intent,
but gives clean "calculated" overlines of various forms.
1) enter the text string
2) select what needs overline
3) context menu select "Character" dialog
4) in character dialog -> Font affects tab
5) "Overlining" drop list to select desired effect

B. this uses the font designers specification, OK for a symbol but does not
work well for words or sentences.
1) enter the text string
2) advance cursor over each character and enter +X
3) character will convert to its Unicode point, e.g. A -> U+0040,  a ->
U+0060
4) append the Unicode combining glyph to each character; i.e. for COMBINING
OVERLINE U+0305, or COMBINING DOUBLE OVERLINE U+033F, or COMBINING DOUBLE
MACRON U+035e, or other from the Unicode block 0300-036F
5) merge the characters with another +X at the end of each Unicode
string.

They should be stable now--our calculation of line heights for Windows builds
was changed to bring it in line with Linux and MacOS with tdf#55469
   for the 5.3.0
release.

There is some potential this may still need to be tweaked but I believe it
is intended to remain as it is now. The issue some folks are having is with
differing font metrics of fonts installed to OS or even between
distributions.

But if the font metrics are the same--the line spacing will remain be the
same across

A few BZ issues suggest it has been an issue for some time and may not
exactly be correct now... but main concern should be the quality/consistency
of your fonts.

That is a topic for the marketing folks, but I am comfortable saying no one
on the ESC sees it that way.

For project health we need more users on the Fresh, or even the master
branch. BZ is clogged with newly spun issues against branches already EOL,
majority of them already fixed and stock QA triage response is going to be
test with a current build. Project development simply moves on.

Rather we don't get to stable status for builds without testing--testing
requires use of the latest branch with patches pushed back as uncovered and
where feasible. For example OpenGL support, and HarfBuzz with DirectWrite
based font rendering on Windows is really only just becoming stable at the
5.4.0 release--the 5.3 branch remains wonky depending on GPU/driver
combinations.

Issues would likely have been uncovered sooner if more folks had made the
effort to test against master in addition to Fresh builds. Installation in
parallel is trivial, so for folks invested in the project it is a low
threshold to contribute.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Unwanted Alternative Image Names

2017-07-27 Thread V Stuart Foote
There is another facet of this that is not being considered. Accessible
documents. That is for accessibility and support of Assistive Technology
tools we are required to provide the Alternate text and titles.

Believe the default filters (import and export) are configured to facilitate
that. Additionally, within the UI imposing name for the images/objects is
displayed in the Navigator GUI--unnamed images/objects are not shown by
default.

It remains in the release notes as indicated and reads: "The mature "still"
version of LibreOffice, recommended for enterprises. As such, the version is
stable and is suitable for all users. Detailed release notes can be accessed
from the link below."

Believe it will change on both the download page and the release-notes when
5.4.0 is released, and 5.3.5 becomes the Still branch. For now the page is
in transition as the 5.2 branch is officially EOL.

2017-07-26 Thread V Stuart Foote
All releases are "stable".

5.3.4 is the latest "Fresh" release, to be followed with 5.3.5 which is in
pre-release.

5.2.7 is the latest "Still" release, when 5.4.0 is released the 5.2 branch
will be EOL for active project development. 5.4.0 will become the "Fresh"
release and 5.3.5 will become the "Still" release.

Current status is available from the release notes page here:

You did it correctly.

Even though the install on 64-bit Windows will go to different locations,
C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice 5 for 32-bit vs. C:\Program
Files\LibreOffice 5 for 64-bit installs, with different HKEY branches in the
Windows registry--WOW6432node for the 32-bit--they will conflict.
Especially because the default install includes setup of the Quickstarter.

They can be made to coexist (including /a "Administrative" install as
commonly needed for our QA work) but for the average user a "clean install"
when shifting from 32-bit to 64-bit is the best practice. The installer
will not handle it for you in any sense.

You can not change the internal format of the dates.

If they are columns of Dates in an ODF spreadsheet they do not need to be
changed--actually can not be changed--rather you just need to change their
display format. Select the column, the Format -> Cells and in the dialog
select Date and a format you need. The -MM-DD is predefined. Or you can
add a format code to use an alternate separator.

If the file is CSV, set it as date during import and set the display format
needed.

Mode 2 for italic lower case greek symbols has been set as the default,
tdf#105483
was resolved for 5.4 with
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=68155a68578a0f4066c1c566c2d378bbae05c216

but the patch to use value 2 by default was rejected for backport to the 5.3
release.

Until moving to a 5.4 build, users so inclined can set the "GreekCharStyle"
stanza with a simple search/edit in expert configuration.

Yes and both already offer fully functional _extensions_ to LibreOffice :-)

That would be the framework to which I refer ;-)

But we were not talking specifically about rewriting the Bibliographic
Component and not clear at all that alone is the best way to proceed in
supporting Citation Styles as it gets rather far into core. Zotero and
Mendeley both hold the data external to the ODF document and depend on
fields and paragraph styles.

Sorry, but the simple truth is that developing and maintaining just a few of
the diverse range of defined styles is out of scope for LibreOffice--but is
fully in scope for projects like Zotero and Mendeley--or the commercial
EndNote product.

Instead LibreOffice provides just the authoring framework for documents in
ODF--to the extent that framework can be extended to support industry
standards CSL (FOSS) or ENS (EndNote) we should.

Improving that framework to support schemes for fielded citation while
writing--supporting parenthetical citation, footnotes, endnotes, and
bibliograhy compliant with styles described in CSL or ENS is where our
development efforts should concentrate. Including collaboration with the
developers of the extensions providing the capability--but it should not be
core to the project.

[libreoffice-users] Re: [Enhancement] writer: Footnote / Endnote Styles according to standards

2017-05-23 Thread V Stuart Foote
Ramon, *

Using the existing Bibliography sample data base provides considerable
function already, based on Harvard style as I understand.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/2/23/WG4212-TOCsIndexesBiblios.pdf
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Referencing_Systems_in_LibreOffice

And frankly this is already well handled by 3rd Party extension--I'm a fan
of Zotero standalone (Windows) and cross-platform (via Firefox) . The
LibreOffice plugin(s) allows application of any .CSL and effective styling
of the parenthtical, footnote, endnote and bibliography. And have not used
it recently but the Mendely project is equally functional.

But always room to improve: have open BZ enhancment for this in tdf#94418
   and duplicate
tdf#95315 .

Preliminary UX/Design team discussion ~Sep 2015 in
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IQ2_dFlWodb3NI9VFy1l4_ZmKpJgoyATYvOmB-0yUcY/edit

As to doing it fully ourselves (and maintaining it), IMHO we should
concentrate on providing the style framework for those 3rd party projects
implementing the full set of .CSL--e.g. Zotero or Mendely rather than
struggle to provide just the few major styles.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Impress can't handle eps images

2017-05-23 Thread V Stuart Foote
Understand the appeal for not having to convert, but until a built-in
LibreOffice implementation-- tdf#67464
  --not dependent
on Ghostscript, ImageMagick, or pstoedit external packages is tackled--its
conversion or lousy quality.

But for starters, be sure the eps you are using does not have a preview
(TIFF or BMP), strip it out. That forces a full resolution rendering to the
LO document canvas and on export to PDF.

Or better do a conversion to SVG (or other canvas, PNG if you're OK with
raster) .

Personally, I prefer a combination of Ghostscript's "ps2pdf" utility:

   ps2pdf -dEPSCrop in.eps out.pdf

and Poppler's (from poppler-utils) "pdftocairo" utility:

   pdftocairo -svg out.pdf out.svg

Added for the 5.1.0 release. It works with all OS, see tdf#73691
  , with some
adjustments for locale.

Just verified the +x functions as intended on Windows 7 sp1 (a Right

the l-Alt should always work).
