I meet this behavior from time to time.
To fix the ill-behaved paragraph, I do this:
1. Ctrl+M to clean the possible manual formatting
2. Set Body Text style
3. Set the wanted style again.
To-date, this has always worked here. YMMV.

that embedding fonts is required by the PDF/A format.
This makes PDF/A files larger than ordinary ones. The standard PDF
format doesn't require font embedding, with the drawback you mention.

things (eg. useless carriage returns) and apply heading styles by hand.

Note: the Selection checkbox doesn't retain its state. You'll have to

That is:

or
