I missed seeing your message. I think you can do what you want using the
Alternative Find & Replace extension
(https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/alternative-dialog-find-replace-for-writer).
As described at http://macrojtb.hys.cz/HelpAltSearch_en.html, specify \m to
find manual page breaks and specify \r (in the Replace field) to remove them.

  Good afternoon. Sorry my English
I need to replace Manual Page Breaks (CNTRL-ENTER) with a printable character
string.
My problem is that the "Search" function does not distinguish the Manual Page Break from the
Paragraph Break (ENTER). That is, putting the expression "$" in the "Search" field gives
me both the Page Breaks and the Paragraph Breaks. This way it replaces all of them, the page ones and the
paragraph ones, which is not what I want (I need to keep the paragraph ones).
In other words, I can't find the regular expression to search for Page Break
and it doesn't give me paragraph breaks at the same time.
There is a similar question in April 2023, which can be found by "Remove manual page
breaks in Writer". But the solution does not work for me, because my colleague
pjferra needed to replace the page breaks with paragraph breaks, and Kyodake responds,
correctly, to that need in which it does not matter to replace the two types of breaks in
the operation, since they are replaced by paragraph breaks.
Has this situation arisen before for you? Have you managed to solve it?
Thank you so much for your attention.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: putting text in 2 or 3 columns on a single page

2024-03-19 Thread Remy Gauthier
Greetings,

Your easiest solution is sections. To create them, highlight the text
you want to place in columns and then use Format > Columns... Enter the
number of columns you want, with optional spacing (I suggest 0,1 cm),
and the format of a separator line if you want. Then hit OK. You can
force a column break by using Insert > More Breaks > Insert Column
break (this will make the text move to the next column). If you want to
change the look & feel of your columns after, you can use Format >
Sections, then select your section and click Options.

I hope this helps.

The detail is interesting, and also helps to understand the context. I'm more
familiar with page styles than with sections, but a quick search suggests that
sections will do what you need. If your changes in the number of columns always
occur at page breaks, page styles might be more elegant, but whatever works for
you ... :-) Good luck with getting your father's poems printed the way you want

I wanted to avoid defining page styles since this requires, I assume, switching
back and forth between styles on some pages and is more sophistication than I
want to get into. Also it would require me to thoroughly understand styles.

My father, or maybe my stepmother, had typed in his collection of poems years
ago on a semi-fancy paper and assembled them into a “book” held together by a
cerlox binding. He gave copies to his sons and daughter and possible to one or
two other family members or family friends. I’m trying to retain the
appearance of his pages in my digital copy. Unfortunately, my father died in
2018 so asking him about any of this is impossible.

I had planned to type and enter his poems into a text document of some kind
years ago but entering it all by hand was onerous since I’m not a touch typist
and I stopped this endeavour.

But more recently I have discovered that OCR (optical character recognition)
has improved vastly since the last time I tried it. I discovered, while doing
something else, that I could photo the pages of his book with my cell phone,
then use Google Lens to select and copy just the text from these pages. I
mailed the text to myself. Then saved the text into page files (rtf (rich text
format) files) and the text was preserved and there was almost never any
extraneous characters.

Because this capture process lost the line structure of the poems, I had to
edit every page file and re-establish the poem line structure. That’s all done
(including correcting some minor spelling and grammatical mistakes in the
process) and I am now trying to assemble the poems into a single Word document
using LibreOffice.

My ultimate plan is to use this file to print copies of his poems into
hardcover book copies. One of my brothers has lost or misplaced his copy of
the cerlox book already. I know there are relatively inexpensive places to get
a small number of books like this printed so I will distribute his poems to
family members and possibly friends as a more durable medium for his poetry.

Sorry for the detail but just thought you might be interested.
Another person was very helpful and suggested using sections for the 2 and 3
column pages. So, I’m going to try that approach since it sounds excellent.

Thanks, Mike, for your suggestion.

I had 3 ideas actually based on what I saw in the LibreOffice Writer manual.
I wondered if Frames, or Sections, or Tables were the best approach since it
looked like any of these might work.
Having 3 tables side by side on the same page might work but I think text for
that page would have to be manually inserted into the tables and it wouldn’t
flow automatically from the first to the second and to the third table.

I wasn’t clear on the application of frames or sections to do this which is why
I thought I’d ask the support email.
another person wrote me and basically suggested a section as the best solution.

But your suggestion was much appreciated.

[libreoffice-users] Re: putting text in 2 or 3 columns on a single page

2024-03-19 Thread Keith Jackson

Thanks,
Keith

Setting individual tables that are left aligned, or center
aligned, or right aligned may be a good option.

You may have seen this question many times so I will apologize in advance for
asking it.

I have a Writer document formatted as docx. It will contain some of my
father’s poems but I have a need on a few pages to have the poem appear in two
or three columns on a page continuing from the bottom of, or a specified point
in, the first column to the second column and, in one case, to a third column.
The text must not wrap within each column because it is lines of poetry.

Can you tell me the best way to do this? I’ve checked the manual and have
some ideas but would appreciate someone guiding me to the best method to do
this.

Thank you for your time in advance. Oh, and in case it is important, I am
using LibreOffice 7.3.7.2.

Now that I understand it better I'll answer the two questions I got in the
mail.

If one of my styles uses a predefined style like default paragraph text and
someone else changes that they won't know that it affects the rest of the
document so if I use a prefixed name cut off any connection to the other
formats.

So, yes I use a prefix with my styles and I tried to separate the "inherit
from thing and chain them to each other as best I can.

I have a template for each chapter/topic and I am trying to load changes in
styles into that and then I can propagate that across the sections. It's
ugly but the best I cand with my limited experience. (It also allows me to
document the procedure for updating the manual for those less versed in it.)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Master document and styles.

2024-01-31 Thread Michael Tiernan
Okay, here's what I've "figured out so far." Based on some *very* limited
knowledge. Just from my point of view.

1) I'm going to (next time I try this) start by duplicating any style I
want to use and prefix it with my project name so I can keep them easier to
identify. (I don't have to go through the "did I modify that style" for my
project if I do that.)

2) My current mess was/is caused by not being clear on where the
"authority" of the styles resides. So, I'll keep a page template (an .odt
file) and *NEVER* modify the styles pages in the book. I have to modify the
master template then import it to my current document. Once I like it, then
import it into each separate part of the book. Each import using the
"overwrite" option.

3) The very first thing I'll duplicate is the default settings when I open
the blank page.

I will reiterate the desire, should it become an option, I want to "export"
a/some/all of the styles as a separate file, maybe a json, etc. where I can
then manage only the settings I care about.

Thanks for everyone's time and help!

Hi Peter,

thank you very much, I will try this.

However, there is also an API method setChecksTurnedOff

as well as a command-line option -no-checks. Are these the same?

Re-writing, the question again:-
How to convert a Multi-Page Text file to PNG, for example:- I have a Text
document of 5 pages and I want to convert that into PNG. By default, it's
giving a PNG of only 1st page. How to get the PNG file for ith page using
LibreOffice.
I used the PageRange filter like this, but it does not work, it's also giving
the PNG only for 1st page.
Also, I'm not able to generate multiple PNGs for multi-page word files using
the LibreOffice Application
CLI:-
soffice --convert-to
'png:writer_png_Export:{"PageRange":{"type":"string","value":"2-"}}' test.odt

There is no conversion of the original file when you open a non-native
file type and Libre|Office does not have the facility to redact or
delete documents. Possibly, what you did was to open a .docx file then
save it in .odt format, which means your original .docx file is still
somewhere on your computer. If your original .docx file has been
deleted/redacted, then you would have to have done that with another
program (eg. your OS file manager). If you are saying that the new .odf
document does not render with exactly the same appearance as the
original .docx file it could be that the original had a complex
structure that the save/export filter was unable to accurately translate
it with the same appearance as the original. Unfortunately, the newer MS
formats are something of a moving target for the creators of our
save/export filters and there can be no guarantee of a a perfect
translation.

your OS (Operating System - eg. Linux, Mac, Solaris, Windows, etc.) and

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Combining vertical text direction of page with ‘right-to-left’ text direction of a table

2023-04-11 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi Eyal,

Eyal Rozenberg schrieb am 11.04.2023 um 11:59:
Anyway, with this being the state of affairs, I do not even know how the
ODF spec _expects_ Vertical LTR or RTL text to be rendered - if at all.
If you can point us to what it says about this, perhaps I could fully
answer.

Text direction of the page and text direction of the table are both
written with attribute style:writing-mode in the file markup. That is
specified in 20.404 style:writing-mode in part 3.
The meaning is not directly specified in ODF but by reference to §7.27.7
of [XSL]. That is
https://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-xsl-20011015/slice7.html#writing-mode

For rl-tb (RTL) XSL has: "Inline components and text within a line are
written right-to-left. Lines and blocks are placed top-to-bottom."
For tb-rl (Asian, 'right-to-left (vertical)' in UI) XSL has: "Inline
components and text within a line are written top-to-bottom. Lines and
blocks are placed right-to-left."
And for use with tables it has: "Table-rows use the
block-progression-direction as the row-stacking direction. The
inline-progression-direction is used to determine the stacking direction
for columns (and cell order within the row)."

If you take that literally, you would get a horizontal table on a
vertical page, if the page is set to "right-to-left (vertical)" and the
table to "right-to-left (RTL)".

But LibreOffice does not render it that way. Therefore my question
whether the way LibreOffice renders it, is actually used. Or to be more
specific: Do you use tables, were the origin of the table is
bottom-right, the columns are stacked bottom-to-top and the rows are
stacked from right-to-left?

Kind regards,
Regina

Hello Regina,

First, note that very few active RTL users are subscribed to the users'
mailing list; at least - to my knowledge. For discussions of RTL
considerations, it is often more useful to try:

irc://libera.chat/libreoffice-rtl
Telegram Group "LibreOffice RTL"
Matrix room https://matrix.to/#/#libreoffice-rtl:libera.chat

(these are now all bridged together.)

Second (and again not answering your questions...) let let me give some
context info.

To the best om my understanding, the "RTL Vertical" and "LTR Vertical"
exist to accommodate CJK scripts in which the glyphs appear in columns,
and RTL/LTR is about the order of the columns of glyphs. i.e. the
vertical axis is minor and the horizontal is major. I am not aware of
proper-RTL scripts in which glyphs are written from top to bottom.

An exception could be those RTL scripts which have common non-connected
forms (Hebrew, N'Ko, Mende), where some vertical billboards can in
theory show one glyph after another in vertical order. This is extremely
rare for the case of Hebrew, and will certainly not be used for anything
that's multi-line. I don't know people from Western Africa, so in theory
they could have that. In Arabic and related scripts I am assuming -
based on some, but partial, knowledge - that this is considered irrelevant.

It is more common however - but still rare - for RTL text to be rotated,
so that the glyphs progress horizontally in their own coordinate system,
but vertically in the page's coordinate system. This is what you get if
you set the Text Direction to "Right-to-Left (Vertical)" in LO Writer. I
actually believe that this is an inappropriate state of affairs, because
in CJK, the glyphs are _not_ rotated in Vertical text direction. I would
have filed a bug about this, but actually I just tried this today for
the first time, since the vertical text direction is not offered for RTL
unless you also enable CJK languages...

Anyway, with this being the state of affairs, I do not even know how the
ODF spec _expects_ Vertical LTR or RTL text to be rendered - if at all.
If you can point us to what it says about this, perhaps I could fully
answer.

I will say, though, that in principle there is no reason why a CJK
vertical-direction page of text cannot have a table with Hebrew or
Arabic text. For example, a public space sign in an Asian country's
airport might have vertical-direction progression and a small
translation table of terms containing RTL text.

But I don't think that the RTL'ness itself is the real issue here,
because almost all of the problems such situations present would also
face us with LTR text.

Hi all,

I’m on working to specify the property “style:writing-mode” for ODF.
That property is called “text direction” in the UI of LibreOffice.

A page in a text document has the setting “Text direction” in section
“Paper Format” on tab “Page” of the “Page Style” dialog. Possible
values are

Left-to-right (horizontal)
Right-to-left (horizontal)
Right-to-left (vertical)
Left-to-right (vertical)

A table has the setting “Text direction” in section “Properties” on
tab “Table” in “Table Properties” dialog. Possible values are

Left-to-right (LTR)
Right-to-left (RTL)
Use superordinate object settings

[libreoffice-users] Re: Combining vertical text direction of page with ‘right-to-left’ text direction of a table

2023-04-11 Thread Eyal Rozenberg

I would

LibreOffice can combine a vertical text direction at the page with RTL text

Are such combinations actually used in documents?
Does LibreOffice render the texts in the way users need it?
What is the intended behavior of such combinations?

Kind regards,

Dear Regina,

thank you very much that you still remembering our talk at German
Community Meeting.

- Yes, we need it in Mongolian old script. These information was for me
very useful for Mongolian old script, which uses top-to-down with
left-to-right.

I mean like in your example document "Page mongolianVert Table RTL.odt".
I will test it later the full functionality of this settings and respond
you back.

- Yes, for the second question too. Because our Cyrillic script uses
normal left-to-right with top-to-down. I think both scripts in one
document combined are at the moment usual usage.

- For other questions i need more tests to answer those.

Best regards

Bachka

PS: I have at moment less time for testing (Mother in my House from
Mongolia for 2 months, :D), sorry. but it has piqued my interest and
motivates me to do more, ;). Thank you for your effort!

I don't think so.  At least not simply.  I am not sure if it
is due to LO or the windows manager program, but probably
LO since it happens on both windows and Linux.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Removal of Previously Marked Page Breaks

2023-01-21 Thread Vince@Verizon

I have found a solution to my problem.

To reset/remove all existing manual page breaks within a .ods file:

 * use View > Page Break,
 * hover mouse cursor somewhere within the displayed Page 1 area,
 * right click on the mouse,
 * select  Delete Page Breaks.

This effectively resets the .ods file to default without manual manual
page breaks. The print output will flow onto pages that are consistent
in area size, which is what I needed.

I must remember in the future that there is no button involved, but
rather a requirement of mouse pointer position and a right-click on the
mouse device.

I am attempting to understand a formula that was suggested for use
within MSExcel2016 so I might us it within LibreOffice Calc.

The formula is:

=INDEX(IF(INDEX(A:A,LARGE(IF($A$4:$B$43=$G$2,ROW($A$4:$A$43),""),ROW(1:1)))=$G$2,E:E,F:F),LARGE(IF($A$4:$B43=$G$2,ROW($A$4:$A$43),""),ROW(1:1))).

When I copy/paste this formula first into Notepad and then copy/paste
from Notepad into a LO Calc spreadsheet, a  #VALUE!  error is returned.

I have not ever used e.g., INDEX(A:A) nor ROW(1:1) as a range
identifier/specifier within a formula, so I wonder if they are
acceptable within LO Calc, or is that causing the error,  #VALUE! ?  I
believe those identify/specify the entire [A] column and the entire
[1] row; is there an equivalent within LO Calc.

Once the error is cleared then I will continue to attempt to
understand what the formula is calculating/doing within LO Calc. I can
see that it is evaluating the data within cell $G$2, the LARGEST value
within A:A, within E:E, and within F:F; but not much else is making
any sense for me to understand. A simplified example would be
appreciated here.

Thanks for reading about my problem and for your comments/reply.

Update:

Here is a link to the original MSExcel spreadsheet, the OP posted at the
Excel Forum; the OP was seeking "Best formula to lookup most recent and

__

Unfortunately, I do not understand the significance of:  ROW(1:1) within
the original formula.

Error #519 says in part,

The formula yields a value that does not correspond to the definition;
Or a cell that is referenced in the formula contains text instead of a
number.

No result (#VALUE is in the cell rather than Err:519!)

and it is true that columns H:J for row1 contain text strings, not
numerical data.

I am still at a loss of understanding .

I have no experience with this problem but the error "Permission to ..."
suggests that the system is blocking things. Is the permission for the file
executable? Reason I ask is that there must be some sort of a driver to play
the file. Read permission would probably let you load it and look at the first
frame.

Good luck!

With mine I need to do Insert - Audio or Video.
Then it places the video on the slide, but I have no way to play it.

So inserting an image works fine, but not a video.

Hi everyone!

I've migrated to Linux a couple months ago and have continued to enjoy Libre
Office:)

However, I can't figure out why Impress won't let me add videos to my
presentation. I couldn't find a solution to the problem by looking it up.

Here's what happens:
I go to slide where I want the video to appear in
Select Insert
Select Video
[File Navigator opens] I navigate to the video file and select Open
Nothing happens, not even an error message is displayed:(
What I've tried to fix it:
Drag-and-drop
Dropping a .mp4 file into the slide displays a square with a music note in it,
not the actual video. Nothing happens when starting the presentation.Create OLE
object from file
After selecting the video file, two error messages appear (finally!)
"Permission to [path of file] denied"
This confuses me, because inserting images, for example, works just fine (also
true for images located in the same folder where the videos are located)
"Object from file [path of file] couldn't be inserted"The folder I'm using is
actually a syslink, so I tried copying the video file to my desktop first and then
inserting it into the presentation
Different file formats (mp4, m4v, webm)
Inserting GIFs results in only one frame of them being shown (nothing happens
when starting the presentation either), although I'm not sure if Impress has
the capability to display GIFs.
I'm running...- Linux Mint 20.3 (with Cinnamon 5.2.7)
- Linux Kernel: 5.4.0-109-generic

Thank you for trying to help!

Does not work; which per the documentation 'makes sense'. 'No sound' is the
choice on the second slide, but the music cuts off. But my goal of the
music spanning slides, does not seem that doable.

Which is fine.

Looks like my options are to dive into Blender for what I want to

I cannot comment on things that are online, but I believe that you can automate
LibreOffice using Python; even though I have never done it. Well I guess I
don't remember if I've done it or not and done a lot of things I don't remember
just a long time ago. Most of the automation I have done is been in basic.

Hello,

This probably answers the question, which seems a bit limited to me, but
whatever.

"When you show an Impress presentation, the embedded sound or video on the

I'm sure this has probably been asked before, I would like to extend the
playback of a track over several slides, loop if necessary, and such as
this, if possible. Is any of that possible, or do I have to consider a more
elaborate approach, like a Blender 'slide show' rendering, or similar
approach?

In the /Slide transitions pane/ in the /Modify Transition area/:

Add some music or whatever to the first slide.

Set Sound to "No sound" for the next slide(s).

The sound you selected for the first slide will play until it is ended
or until you add a new sound track.

I thought "Repeat until next sound" would loop, but it does not. I have
no idea of what it does.

I'm using version 7.2.5.2 on Windows 10.

Charles,

Well you could try the Unicode combining glyphs -- U+035F COMBINING DOUBLE
MACRON BELOW

Enter "U+0059U+035fU+006fU+035fU+0075U+035fU+0072" and then toggle with
+X, effectiveness will vary by font.

Alternatively, LO provides an artificial underline effect from the 'Format
Chracter' dialog (Format -> Character on main menu) on the 'Font Effects' tab:
Underlining decoration.

RE: [libreoffice-users] RE: LibreOffice to LyX

2021-10-05 Thread Virgil Arrington
I don’t know your particular situation, but it seems to me that most common
whack-a-mole problems come from mixing formatting-by-styles and direct
formatting. This is especially common in collaborated documents. One co-author
works with styles and the other works with direct formatting, which creates a
hot mess.

I have never had a problem with LO when I have controlled the formatting. I use
my own styles that I have created and everything works smoothly. But if someone
else touches my work and starts inserting direct formatting, then it’s
whack-a-mole time. I don’t fault the program for this, whether its LO Writer or
MS Word.

I recall years ago, another FOSS program, AbiWord had a feature called “lock
styles,” which prevented direct formatting. I haven’t looked at AbiWord in
years so I don’t know if it is still there. I can only imagine the average user
being frustrated by being locked out of direct formatting, which highlights an
inherent problem with programs like LO and Word.

They work best when used with styles, yet I dare say most users don’t want to
take the time to learn how to use styles. I tried in vain to teach styles to my
secretary and she couldn’t be bothered. She complained that, while I was
spending time creating and editing styles, she was actually getting work done.
I could never persuade her that, once learned, styles make things so much
faster and easier. I suspect that her attitude is more prevalent than LO’s
developers would like to admit. Hence…

Whack-a-mole!!

I haven't dealt with long wordprocessing documents on LO,
but I have in MSWord. And I have seen the exact same
whack-a-mole behavior. Going through the whole document
and explicitly setting each section font size and style.
Numbered lists seem to cause the most problems.

At the risk of joining in a flame war, I feel a need to share my experiences
with LyX and LibreOffice. As I am on both LyX’s and LibreOffice’s user lists, I
am posting this message to both lists.

I have used both LyX and LibreOffice for decades, the former going back to
version 1.4 and the latter going back to its origins as StarOffice and later as
OpenOffice.org. Over the years I have found myself having a love/hate
relationship with both. I have had to learn that each has its own way of
working, and when I try to make either work like the other, I run into problems.

My current work is primarily with slide presentations, and I bounce back and
forth between LyX/Beamer and LO Impress (as well as RMarkdown/Slidy/Ioslides).
I have found that with LyX, I can very happily change formatting after
composing my content and, so long as I am satisfied with Beamer’s slide designs
and themes, it works very well. But, I usually find myself getting very
frustrated when I want to change some design detail. It often requires a Google
search to learn the right LaTeX command to achieve the change I want. After
spending hours trying to achieve a certain result and editing preamble and/or
LaTeX code, I often find I just give up and move it all to LO Impress just to
get the job done.

On the flip side, I have had to learn that LO Impress doesn’t like having slide
formats changed *after* the presentation substance has been composed. While my
styles haven’t suddenly changed on me, I have learned that changes made to
Impress master slides do not always get to all slides in a presentation.
Through painful experience, I have learned that, if I ever make any direct
changes to a particular slide’s format, it seems to disassociate that slide
from the master slide. So, after hours of composing and wrestling with
Impress’s master slides trying to get it all to behave, I find I often just
give up and move it all to LyX/Beamer just to get the job done.

And in those cases where my slide design needs are particularly simple, I run
to Rstudio and Slidy to create a quick and dirty (and well behaved) slide
presentation.

And, so I bounce back and forth between the programs using the one that will
let me get the job done efficiently. I find they all require considerable
commitment of time and effort to achieve the desired results. Each has some
feature I find maddening and each has some feature I find indispensable. In
short, despite my obsessive search for the perfect document processing system,
I have learned it doesn’t exist. I will continue to use whatever tool best
meets the need at hand. Sometimes it’s LyX, sometimes it’s LibreOffice and
sometimes it’s
RMarkdown.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Default file name for Export Directly as PDF is now blank.

2021-08-30 Thread Steve Edmonds

I think I have this worked out.
If the PDF exists already the Name field is blank.
If the PDF doesn't exist the Name field is filled with the name of the file.

The older files that were working before saving (as .odt) were .sxw.
It would save time hunting down the PDF file to overwrite and avoid a
mistake of overwriting a wrong file if the Name field was filled by default.

I have just been updating some older documents and with these, as long
as I have not saved them, Export Directly as PDF has the Name field
pre-filled with the file name. As soon as I save the odt file the Name
field is no longer pre-filled.

I thought may be this was some setting in LO options but it seems
document specific.

Should the Name field in file dialogue to Export Directly as PDF be
prefilled with the file name or is this discontinued, if it should be
how do I get this to happen.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Multi-column Format

2021-08-08 Thread John Kaufmann

Dave,

On 16-Feb-2021 you started a thread ["How to ask a question on Ask
LibreOffice?"] in this forum mentioning that you also [like Rob now] have a problem
with the Ask system, and so tend to use this list instead -- which is fine: as noted in
an earlier thread, Ask and this list are alternative communities to get help, and should
serve the same purpose. But, as Sophi noted in reply to you, TDF hopes to combine those
communities (web and mailing list) with an implementation of Discourse (which would also
eliminate nabble, which existed mostly as an archive for this list).

So far, the plan has only been executed as far as eliminating nabble; Ask and
this list are still both alive and not combined, so Rob can subscribe here (as
an alternative to ask.libreoffice.org) to ask questions, and keep an open (and
patient) mind about whatever succeeds this list.

Meanwhile, to answer Rob's question: This sounds like what is usually called "n-up
printing" (with, in Rob's case, n=2) or "combination printing" -- that is, putting n
(2 or more) pages on a sheet, where a sheet is one side of a piece of paper. As such, that is
usually a function of the printer driver.

If I have misunderstood the issue, maybe Rob can reply to the list?

John

How can I make a four-column spread sheet print in two parts, side by

pasting it into the columns to the right of the original sheet.

I used to do this in Excell but can't find any information about it in

[libreoffice-users] Re: Strange new behavior in LO Calc

2021-07-31 Thread MR ZenWiz
Further update:

I happened to copy my MFU spreadsheet to my laptop, which is running LO 7.0.4.2.

The problem I'm seeing in 7.2.0 of not remembering previous column
entries and supplying the last one (or earliest one - can't remember
which) as the default and fill-in option works fine in 7.0.4.2.

I think it may be a bug and I'll gather the necessary data and submit
a bug when I get a spare minute or fifteen...

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Where are my files?

2021-06-29 Thread Dan Lewis
You sent this request to the wrong mailing list. It should have been
to users@global.libreoffice.org. where general questions like yours are
sent. You sent it to the mailing list for developers, the people who
work on the code for LibreOffice. I have done so for you. How have you
searched for these files, and do you know the names of them? Also, were
you doing something in LibreOffice when it restarted? Have you used your
operating system to search for the files, or did you just use
LibreOffice? If you use windows, the files should be in your Document
folder which is the default setting.

For others on the mailing list: any replies you make to this
question should include a CC to zhangyviv...@gmail.com as he is not

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO not finding my scanner

2021-04-09 Thread insomniacno1
I have been posting in this thread regarding my tests and tries to slve this:
https://github.com/Ordissimo/scangearmp2/issues/35

To cut it short, either it is how Libreoffice interacts with the canon_pixma
driver or it is the driver itself causing this problem.

Yester day I dicovered that although the snap of newer version of
Libreoffice can be installed on 16.04 from snap store, it doesn't mean
everything is working - in this case the discovery of my canon scanner.
Removing the snap version and using the latest version available for 16.04,
Libreoffice 6.2.8.2 - I can now get the scan dialog, and it can scan -
somewhat - because there are still a problem.

So I uninstalled and removed all Libreoffice from my system, by purging
everything and downloaded older versions in App images to see if the problem
were identical in all versions:

LibreOffice-3.6.7.2.help-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-4.4.7.2.help-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-5.4.7-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-6.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-6.0.1-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-6.2.6-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-6.2.7-x86_64.AppImage
LibreOffice-6.2.8-x86_64.AppImage

and even tried

LibreOffice-6.4.7-x86_64.AppImage

I tested them all, and the common thing is that in the scan dialog(not
showing on newer than 6.4.7 Version 7.0 Fresh App image doesn't even open up
on 16.04, snap 7.1.2.2 work but not scan dialog after selecting source),
when selecting the area to scan by mouse is not kept, it jumps back to
default after 1 second(right: 90mm bottom: 54mm), only when setting this
manually will it keep - that is until you either chose Generate preview or
select to Scan, in both cases it jumps back to default again.

Setting everything up and selecting Scan, ends up in it jumping back to
default just before exiting the Scan dialog, and only scanning right: 90mm
bottom: 54mm.

Extremely frustrating not to mention annoying!

Hope this will get things going in solving this problem, maybe the Document
Foundation could talk with the author of the driver?

With kind regards

Jan

It seems I want to set “Optimal Row Height” as the default. I thought that’s

that setting. If I have the trouble again, I’ll check if the affected cell has
a different row height setting for some reason. If so, it sounds like Girvin’s

I think the answer may be simple: that you have set the row height for
the relevant cells to be insufficient to allow wrapping to happen. In
this case, the last line of wrapped text is indeed what will appear in
the cell. You need to tinker with row height to enable Calc to expand
the row sufficiently to accept all your text.

I trust this helps.

Brian Barker

Double-click on the bottom line of the far left column (the row number
column, not column "A") of the row needing enlargement. If you are on
the line, the mouse pointer will change to the up-down arrow icon. Doing
so should increase the row height to accommodate the text. (It will also
decrease the row height if the text will allow it.)

My printer is connected through a network which also includes a
tower computer. I have notice that when scanning to the tower does not
have the ability to produce a preview; the laptop has not problem doing
this. Both use the same O/S version using the same CD to install it on

It worked first go and scanned a page right into a new document.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO not finding my scanner

2021-02-15 Thread Roderick Anderson

Interesting. I never noticed the scan option before.

So I gave it a try.

Linux Mint 19.3, LO 6.0.73, Xsane 0.999 (graphic front end to SANE),
Brother MFC-L3750 CDW.

Slow-ish but let me scan.

Device (Brother) doesn't support a preview but LO faked it. Set to 300
DPI, is scanned and inserted the image.

I have had this issue since Libreoffice 6.2.2.8 which came installed with my

I just removed all instances of LibeOffice today and installed the snap

Solution to the SANE problem, where it can find USB Scanner but not network
Scanner:

1. Open Terminal/Console Shell emulator window

2. Download Canon MG3000 Scanner Linux Drivers

Here https://ph.canon/support/PIXMA%20MG3070__%20MG3070S__%20MG3077/model

Download Canon MG3070S Scanner Driver for Ubuntu Linux 32/64-bit.

3. Also grab Canon ScanGear MP .deb Driver.

4. Confirm to Open with Archive Manager on Browser
Or after Double-Click/Right-Click on Scanner Driver
(When Downloaded with Firefox may be located in /tmp/mozilla* Dir)

5. Extract into the /tmp directory

6. Now to Install Canon Scanner Driver

First, access the Target directory with:

cd /tmp/scangear*

And then Run the Installation Script:

sudo ./install.sh

Note: During installation You may be Asked to Connect & Power On your
Scanner…

Now if in the Output you find trace of some Missing Package then try first
to execute:

cd /tmp/scangear*/packages

sudo su -c "apt-get install gdebi"

sudo su -c "gdebi ./*.deb"

When finished, restart the laptop

7. Head over to
https://launchpad.net/~thierry-f/+archive/ubuntu/fork-michael-gruz and
install the ppa as described:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:thierry-f/fork-michael-gruz
sudo apt-get update

8. Go to /etc/sane.d/ and edit dll.conf as root. Under canon, add
canon_pixma and save the document and close the editor.

9. Open terminal and type sudo sane-find-scanner – it will not find the
scanner

9. In terminal type scanimage -L – scanner is now found and all SANE apps
work. LibreOffice do not work.

Hope this helps someone out there :)

2021-01-29 Thread Paul D. Mirowsky
An engineer, a statistician, and a physicist are out hunting. They spot
a buck, and each take turns to try and bag it. The physicist goes first.
He pulls out his lab book and quickly calculates the trajectory of the
bullet, assuming it is a perfect sphere in a vacuum.

The bullet falls *20m* short of the deer.

The engineer goes second. He pulls out his engineer's pad and book of
projectile assumptions. After a few minutes he’s ready, he takes aim,
and fires.

The bullet lands 20m passed the deer. The statistician leaps in the air
shouting, “We got it!”

The error is always in the middle.

Thanks to all the engineers and IEEE and to my father who was one.

[libreoffice-users] re: calc: index column A with column B

2021-01-28 Thread James

I want to find the row in column A that corresponds to the row of a

value in column B.

eg.

rowAB
1 10 22
2 20 15
3 30 3000
4 40 10

=some_function('A',minimum_function(B));

where minimum_function(B) returns 4 and some_function('A',4) returns the

value in column A at row 4.

I asked the previous and someone gave me the formula:

=INDIRECT("$A"(MIN(B:B);B:B;0))

It worked fine but now I have some rows with zeros (more than one row):
row A B
1 10 22
2 20 15
3 30 3000
4 40 10
5 50 0
6 60 0

Is there a MINBUTGREATERTHANZERO function?

Yes I get "Default" in the title field with 7.0.4.2 (x64) and all 6.x
versions, but that is down to my profile, otherwise I get the same as you.

The real issue is that 7.1.0.2 anything entered in the title field of a
new or existing document is lost (more accurately disappears) on save.

Ok, so increasingly strange. I looked back at the PDFs for previous years,
and it looks like the numbers have been marching across the cell towards the
right for 3 years, after having started off on the left.

I've reset the base spreadsheet and this year's to zero indent, and made a
note. We'll see if it changes.

2021-01-13 Thread Regina3000
Interestingly, the base spreadsheet that I copy and edit, has an indent of
193 pt, 30 pt less than this one. The one for 2020 has an indent of 53 pt,
and rather than being to the right, where I wanted the numbers to be,
they're somewhere to right of center. I don't have 2019 any longer, or I'd
check that, too.

This is really weird.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc calendar in xlsx file format - day numbers disappeared suddenly

2021-01-12 Thread Remy Gauthier
Hi Regina,I found your issue: the indent on your cells (like F3) is
223pt which places the text more or less 3 inches (7.9cm) to the right
of the cell. This seems to be something that was done as formatting to
the cells individually because the Default style calls for a zero
indent. Looking at your setup, the long but easier option will be for
you to select the day cells (using CTRL-drag to select more than one)
and then Format > Cells... and go to the Alignment tab: there, set the
Indent value to 0. This should bring your numbers back and they should
be left justified. Excel is not as flexible as LO when it comes time to
format the cells, so if you want to maintain the compatibility with
Excel, do not use the padding that is available on Format > Cells...
Borders if you want to move the numbers around: just use left, right,
center justification.
Some suggestions to make your life easier:You can replace the drop-down
entry of cell J1 with this formula: =TEXT(DATE(L1,1,1),""), and the
yes/no for leap year in J2 with =IF(DATE(L1+1,1,1)-
DATE(L1,1,1)>365,"yes","no"). And those should work correctly in Excel
as well.Don't hesitate if you have any other questions.Rémy.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc calendar in xlsx file format - day numbers disappeared suddenly

2021-01-12 Thread Regina3000

Hi,It is a bit hard to guess what is going on without actually seeing
the file. Can you e-mail it to me?Two things come to mind:-
Calculations are in manual mode and the cells are not re-calculated.
You can see the status in Data > Calculate (or try F9 to force
recalculation)- Conditional formatting that overrides the cell text
color because an entry is invalid (year greater than 2020?). You can
try to copy a blank cell and paste the value in the cell elsewhere
(using Paste Special). You can then see if the calculation is done and
if it's only a formatting issue.- A calculation or data element is
wrong and the cell formula prevents wrong outputs to be shown
(something like =IFERROR(something,"")). You can use the Detective
(Tools > Detective > Trace Precendents) to find which cells control
which and find the source issueI hope this helps.Rémy.

Thanks.

I tried copy/paste special-numbers and the number showed up.

I tried Data/Calculate/Recalculate hard and that did nothing.

I tried Tools/Detective/Trace Precedents, and nothing obvious showed up.

I think it's a formatting issue, but it's strange that it would show up out
of the blue, all of a sudden, when before, it was working just fine.

I've attached a copy of the file with (I hope) sensitive information
deleted. I am seeing the same problems in this file as in the original. I
would be interested to see whether you find that the numbers show up for
you. I have a suspicion that they will.

I'll be able to reboot my computer shortly, and I will report back as to
whether that fixed the issue. Of course, that won't tell me what the issue
is...

E-mailing, and Signing" of the Calc Guide.

o Go to Format | Page... | Sheet | Scale.
o Set "Scaling mode" to "Fit print range(s) to width/height" and "Width in
pages" to 1.

Very nice! I had overlooked that. Thanks, Brian.

... (especially in an environment where a sheet could be a million columns wide)

... (Er, sorry, but maximum columns per sheet is 1024.)

I did exaggerate, didn't I? 10^6 high, but only 10^3 (AMJ) wide. I should have
checked.

Um, sorry: That should be 2^20 high by 2^10 (AMJ) wide.
[That was sloppy.]

[libreoffice-users] Re: Fit last column in spreadsheet to print

2021-01-10 Thread Alan B
Hi Charles,

Your initial question was "...see how I cna fit the last column in to print
on 8/12 x 11..." which to me is equivalent to "fit all columns on a single
sheet". So the answer is to set the page width of the printout to one sheet
wide.

Not sure what to say to your follow up, "...I have no idea what I would set
the “Width in pages” to fir this spreadsheet...", because width will ALWAYS
BE set to one sheet if you want the printout to fit across one sheet. If it
has many rows then be sure to set the #of pages high by a number that will
fit everything. If set to 100 the output won't be stretched to be 100 pages
tall.

And you hit on the real trick, "...with all columns across the same page
and also in readable print..." Readable print depends on the number of
columns and the width of the sheet.

If the print isn't legible, try printing the sheet landscape. Now there's
immediately 2½" more paper to scale your columns across. If the print is
still too small then try landscape on a legal page or reduce the number of
columns that need to be seen or both.

p.s. moved back to the list. meant to reply there the first time

x-axis is time;

z-axis is specific-product;
w-axis is cost-to-manufacture/wholesale price/distributor price/MSRP;

I've seen, and used spreadsheets with 4+ dimensions. By every measurable

to use an appropriate designed database, with SQL to extract the

For instance let's say the third dimensions use greek characters. Then by
default you see the "α" 2D spreadsheet showing the numbers and letters grid
at that value "α".
You hold Alt and scroll once and it changes to "β" 2D spreadsheet. And so
on.

Also it would require a way to select the X and Y axis in order to visualize
the data. So for instance you could change the X axis to display the greek
letters dimension and show the numbers on Y axis.

This could be really powerful. What do you think?

Thanks to all you guys for your help. It is possible to insert a page
break in the template, but there was none there in my case, so I still
have to ask myself: where does the blank page come from? There is a
setting, however, to print only left hand pages. That does the trick of
suppressing the blank pages.

Many thanks, again

The relevant document was originally created in MS Word. I converted it into
a LO .odt and used to continue working on that document in .odt format.
After the issues occured, I saved it as .fodt and .rtf and it seems as if
the RTF conversion get rid of the inherited MS .doc issues.

To confirm your issue, was this document with the problem ever a different
format?
That is, did it begin as a MS Word that you opened in LO and then saved?

Each time you save the document, are you saving it as ODT format or another
format?

[libreoffice-users] Re: Chapter and footnotes enumeration issues in LO Writer 7.0 and 7.0.3.1 beta

2020-11-28 Thread UlfDunkel
Self-reply:
I deinstalled LO 7.x and returned to LO 6.4.7.2 but that didn't help. The
issues (forgotten heading styles and footnote enumeration) seem to stick
inside the document.

What seemed to help was creating a new document and copying the whole
content of my 650 pages book into that new document. After adjusting some
applied paragraph styles, everything seems to work fine again. Saving the
new document, quitting and relaunching LO brought the new document back as
expected.

What else could I have done to fix this issue?

But semantically is entirely incorrect. It's [something more than] a
coincidence that spatial coordinates use the same notation as time
coordinates, but no more than that.

Odd that the locale would change the sign used in functions.

Odd, maybe, but true. Sorry that my formulae did not exactly match your needs.

That is because you have - weirdly - chosen to mess up my formula,
changing my "E" (for east) into "O" (for west). So *of course* the
longitude signs are now reversed. Reinstate my "E" and everything will work.

Because in the document O = West, not East (which I forgot to point out).

I know that, but it seems you don't! You didn't need to point it out:
I had realised - and explained so in my original message. But you are
still missing the point here. You thought you needed to translate my
formula, but you didn't: I wrote exactly what you needed here. My
test mentions "E" for east (or "est") but properly distinguishes
between "E and "O". By changing "E" to "O" you have not translated
into French but changed east to west. I'm sure east in France is the
same east as anywhere else, and similarly west - no matter that the
names are different! (Or do French compasses point southwards?!) You
need "E" for French "est" in my formula just as you would need "E"
for English "east". Surely you can see that swapping east and west
(as you chose to do) will swap the signs of your longitude values and
introduce the error?

Yes: I based my formulae on that original picture! Note that includes
"E" for east/est.

I trust this helps.
