IMNSHO, whilst trivial to do, it is also tedious. Whether or not that
qualifies as simple is left as an exercise
There is a simple way to turn off all formatting: Use NotePad or TextEdit. I
won’t lift a finger to help him until he gets a civil tongue in his head, so to
speak. He can RTFM for help.

Not familiar with TextEdit, but I don't think
To use common word processing formats, the built-in WordPad Windows Utility
will do the job in terms of simple .rtf, .docx, .odt and a few forms of .txt
files. You might need Windows 7 or later.
