Re: Allocation Errors

2024-08-20 Thread Dave Fisher
When making a report about errors we need more information in order to help you.

1. What OS are you on and what version? For example, Windows 10 or macOS Sonoma.
2. Which version of Apache OpenOffice are you using? Is it the latest 4.1.15?
3. Are you using Writer?
4. What type of graphic are you including? Is it a PNG, JPEG, SVG, or what?
5. Are the graphic file large in how much space they take in storage?

This information will help guide answers and help identify the bug you are
encountering.

Best,
Dave

Hi Frank,

It does not make any difference if you are creating a normal document or
a template, the procedure is exactly the same until you reach the point
of saving the file as either a document or a template.

Your main problem is that you are using frames to hold the email address
and phone number and the frames are anchored in such a way that the main
body text cannot flow around them. Rather than try to teach you about
frame anchoring and layout in an email, I will restructure your document
to resolve your issue and send the restructured copy to you shortly.

I would recommend you spend a little time reading the relevant sections
of our "Getting Started" user guide:

What error messages do you sere when you try to edit/update the sheet?

Note, the "Record Changes" option has no impact on a read only file.

Try finding the file with your OS (operating system's) file manager (eg.
Windows Explorer) and if the file is set read only by the OS,
untick/uncheck that setting in the file manager's properties option.

An alternative workaround would be to select the entire contents of the
original worksheet and paste into a new empty worksheet, then save the
copy under a slightly different name. If the new copy of the worksheet
is working as required you can delete the original

ODF (OpenDocument Format ISO/IEC 26300:2006 standard

impossible to open unless you have the correct password.

While it will not resolve your current issue, for the future you might
consider a good secure password manager to generate and store strong
passwords for you.
My recommendation would be the free open source Bitwarden password

Close Apache OpenOffice, open your file manager and browse for the
folder where your file is stored. In that same folder check for a file
that looks like .~lock..xxx# where .xxx is the same as the name
of your file eg. a filename test.odt would have a "lock" file named
.~lock.test.odt# Delete that lock file, then open your file again and
the file should no longer be locked.

Hi Cannie,

Unfortunately there is no single definitive answer to your question,
because every template can be offered with different licence conditions.
In *MOST* cases templates are offered with licence conditions which do
NOT restrict their use for commercial purposes

The only way to accurately know under which licence the template has
been released, is to visit https://templates.openoffice.org/en find the
page for the template you are interested in using and read the
"License" information shown there. In some cases the information may be
shown in the form of an acronym (eg. BSD) you can click on the acronym
to view the specific detail of the license

Disappearing Toolbar

2022-05-18 Thread Dave
In the process of trying to replicate the issue of another poster, I
stumbled upon a different issue. When starting Calc (either 4.1.11 or
4.1.12) the "Find" toolbar is visible. However, if the "Find" toolbar is
turned (toggled) off with the menu "View -> Toolbars -> Find" option, it
cannot be turned (toggled) back on with the same menu option, unless AOO
is restarted. Repeated on 3 Win 10 Pro machines.

Is this a known bug? If not< is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: The AOO forums have not worked for several days.

2022-04-21 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

I’ve been working on the issue today without success. I’m taking some time away
from work to focus on completion of this migration.

It looks like some type of DOS issue. We’ve been slowly building a new box for
quite some time.

Please stay tuned for progress tomorrow. I will ask for volunteers to test on a
new url. Once functionality is confirmed we will complete the data transfer.

Anyone who has time, phpBB/httpd/PHP coding experience, and linux sysadmin
knowledge is very welcome to volunteer to help going forward. If you want to
volunteer send an email to sysad...@openoffice.apache.org

Dave

You have not provided sufficient information to identify your issue.
 * Explain what steps you are taking to save your documents.
 * What happens when you try to save your documents?
 * Do you see any error messages when you try to save your documents?
 * If so, what exactly do they say?
 * How is Microsoft Edge connected to saving your documents?
With all or most answers to the above questions, it should be possible
to identify your issue and offer a solution.

You need to add a break between pages of different styles.
* Place the cursor at the point in your document where you want the page
styles to change.
* From the main menu select "Insert -> Manual Break".
* The "Insert Break" dialog opens.
* If not already selected, select the "Page Break" option.
* Click the "Style" drop-down list and select the required page style.
Click the "Help" button in that dialog for more information.

Hope that helps.

Dependent upon what kind of color detail you are seeking, this feature
already exists. If the font color of a cell has already been set, by
simply clicking on a cell the font color is shown as a colored bar below
the upper case A (font color) icon on the default Calc formatting toolbar.

If you are looking for something like RGB values or color names to be
displayed, you should file a RFE (Request For Enhancement) bug report.

It is not affected by that vulnerability.

4.1.1 is impacted by a number of other CVEs and we recommend updating to 4.1.11.

Hi -

The Apache OpenOffice security team has looked into the two Log4Shell
vulnerabilities. We are not impacted by them as we don’t use Apache Log4J 2.

We don't know if any third party extensions are impacted. You would need to
contact those parties if you are concerned.

Oracle donated OpenOffice.org to the Apache Software Foundation over ten years

Apache OpenOffice, we are completely volunteer.

Anyone member is welcome to produce a Solaris version of Apache OpenOffice. We
had a member of our community who did so early on, but does no longer.

About Porting: https://www.openoffice.org/porting/index.html

Out of date information about Solaris:
https://www.openoffice.org/tools/dev_docs/build_solaris.html and
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide

The Apache License v2 (AL2) is compatible with BSD. Unfortunately, LibreOffice
has chosen a license which is not compatible with Apache Release Policy. That’s
their choice.

We prefer to remain stable and have taken a different approach to versioning.
We are on our 12th version of 4.1 which is 4.1.11. We are also working on a 4.2
line which is only available as a developer testing build.

We provide both DEB and RPM installs for Linux systems.

We will be providing AL2 licensed product only as we are a project of The
Apache Software Foundation - https://www.apache.org

See this blog post for an excellent description of the Foundation’s mission.
https://blogs.apache.org/foundation/entry/the-apache-way-to-sustainable

We would welcome and support anyone who wants to resurrect and support an Open
Indiana/Open Solaris build. We are all volunteers who are working where they
please.

CVE-2021-28129: DEB packaging for Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 installed with a non-root userid and groupid

2021-10-07 Thread Dave Fisher
Severity: low

Description:

While working on Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 a developer discovered that the DEB
package did not install using root, but instead used a userid and groupid of
500. This both caused issues with desktop integration and could allow a crafted
attack on files owned by that user or group if they exist.

Users who installed the Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 DEB packaging should upgrade to

CVE-2021-40439: Apache OpenOffice: Billion Laughs

2021-10-07 Thread Dave Fisher
Severity: medium

Description:

Apache OpenOffice has a dependency on expat software. Versions prior to 2.1.0
were subject to CVE-2013-0340 a "Billion Laughs" entity expansion denial of
service attack and exploit via crafted XML files. ODF files consist of a set of
XML files.

All versions of Apache OpenOffice up to 4.1.10 are subject to this issue.

expat in version 4.1.11 is patched.

CVE-2021-33035: Apache OpenOffice: Buffer overflow from a crafted DBF file

2021-10-07 Thread Dave Fisher
Severity: high

Description:

Apache OpenOffice opens dBase/DBF documents and shows the contents as
spreadsheets. DBF are database files with data organized in fields. When
reading DBF data the size of certain fields is not checked: the data is just
copied into local variables. A carefully crafted document could overflow the
allocated space, leading to the execution of arbitrary code by altering the
contents of the program stack.

This issue affects Apache OpenOffice up to and including version 4.1.10

This issue is fixed in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.11

Apache OpenOffice would like to thank Eugene Lim, Government Technology Agency
of Singapore for reporting this issue.

Exactly. I was looking at settings yesterday and there is one that controls the

FYI - I looked more closely and I’m not sure how you even have transparency as
a choice in the background fill. For me it is “No Fill” and that works fine.

Can you explain how you managed that setting?

Re: When is the version for Big Sur O.S. expected?

2021-09-26 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

XLSX and Excel is Microsoft’s file format. OpenOffice implements OpenDocument
Format (ODF). Excel can save ODF. Ask your source to save the file that way.

OpenOffice is all volunteer while Microsoft is huge as you know. They
continually improve their Office Open formats…

If reading XLSX is important for you then you might find LibreOffice better
suited to your needs.

What you describe is a font metrics problem where the metrics used don’t match
the font used. Can you describe your OS version, OpenOffice version, font
including style and size selected, and if that font is present in your system.

Re: Code execution in Apache OpenOffice via non-http(s) schemes in Hyperlinks

2021-04-15 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

Here is some background on the issue which has apparently existed since about
OpenOffice.org 2.0 in 2005 or so.

See https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=49802

Some confusion existed between types of hyperlinks and rather than filtering
they were all allowed to proceed.

Arrigo restored the code and Carl added some protocol checks:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice/commit/aa358bfc895091e0ee5382ad1d25e5d51261463b

This current code will cause a warning for any http(s) hyperlinks that do not
have an extension in the “whitelist.”

Some think that we should blanket allow all http(s) hyperlinks so I’ve created
a PR for that:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice/pull/127

Topics for 4.2.0 include:
(1) A better dialog box for the hyperlink security warning
(2) Implement an option to allow users to choose from 3 levels of hyperlink
security that is in the code, but not the settings. The levels in the code are
essentially:
- No Security
- What we have now
- And only help links

All The Best,
Dave

CVE-2021-30245: Code execution in Apache OpenOffice via non-http(s) schemes in Hyperlinks

2021-04-15 Thread Dave Fisher
Severity: moderate

Description:

The project received a report that all versions of Apache OpenOffice through
4.1.8 can open non-http(s) hyperlinks. The problem has existed since about 2006
and the issue is also in 4.1.9. If the link is specifically crafted this could
lead to untrusted code execution. It is always best practice to be careful
opening documents from unknown and unverified sources. The mitigation in Apache
OpenOffice 4.1.10 (unreleased) assures that a security warning is displayed
giving the user the option of continuing to open the hyperlink.

It will show “OpenOffice”. She can try “Force Quit” from the Apple menu to see
if there is an OpenOffice already running.

The other question is if she is running from the installation disk or from the
Applications folder. OpenOffice should be copied from the installation disk
image to Applications in the Finder.

Re: open office

2021-01-04 Thread Dave Fisher
There are individuals and companies that at one time provided CDs and DVDs for
OpenOffice.org <http://openoffice.org/>. This was allowed by Sun Microsystems
and Oracle Corp because that was considered a benefit to the community.

The TDF's LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice did not exist when this practice
started well over 10 years ago.

What we are looking for are those that switched from providing a service of CDs
and DVDs and now sell links to openoffice.org/download/ with support provided
here by community volunteers. They may also repackage OpenOffice with malware
and other “goodies”. We want to prevent abuse of the Apache OpenOffice
trademarks.

IMO while the TDF has expressed interest in the OpenOffice brand in various
ways there has never been a known abuse of the OpenOffice trademark. If one
were reported I am confident that it would be accidental and cured quickly.

Dave

We no longer produce MD5 files. Instead we have SHA256 and SHA512. Users need
only check one and not the other. Instructions are complex and involve multiple

Quit OpenOffice.
Open the Application Folder.
Open the OpenOffice that’s in the Application folder.

Re: Failure

2020-03-12 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

Many people have created versions of OpenOffice.org and Apache OpenOffice.
Typically they bundle a version on a DVD and charge a nominal fee. Often they
do very little and even point users to the various free, community supported
resources like this mailing list.

The Apache Software Foundation is a non-profit that is dedicated to providing
software for the public good free of charge. Oracle Corp. donated the codebase
and trademarks to the Foundation nearly 9 years ago. The project and code is
now managed completely by unpaid volunteers.

You should download the latest version from
https://www.openoffice.org/download/. This will redirect you to SourceForge who
generously support the community by providing mirroring services for OpenOffice
downloads.

We can support you here if that is where you got your copy. If not then we
cannot say. We are sorry that someone sold you a disk w/o much support.

Regards,
Dave

It would help us to answer your question if you provided adequate

1. Which link are you referring to?
2. Which operating system are you using?
3. Can you provide more detailed information about your issue.

Several million other users are not experiencing the same problem.

Scanned images are just like photographs (bitmaps = just a series of
dots that make up a picture). To turn scanned text into editable text
you have to process the image through OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) software.
There are numerous commercial OCR packages available, but if you you
only want to convert the occasional image you might consider free
options such as:

Can you explain in more detail what you mean by "stopped working"?
You appear to be using Windows 10 and I am guessing you are double
clicking on document names and those documents are not opening.
Do any error or other messages appear? If so, what do they say?
Can you start the program (eg. Writer) from the Windows menu?

Hi Calvin,

Please note that attachments are removed from posts to this list, which
means that most subscribers will not see your capture.

I can see your image and my guess is that you have a number of pages
(not spreadsheets) in the document and you have somehow inadvertently
switched from single page view into book view and your window zoom has
remained at 100%.

The simple solution is to click on the left hand icon of the 3 icons in
the bottom right hand corner of the Writer window. I am attaching an

Fwd: Product support for OpenOfficeWriter

2019-10-05 Thread Dave Apache
This message has been redirected from d...@openoffice.apache.org

Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2019 11:47:05 -0500
From: majabro...@suddenlink.net
To: d...@openoffice.apache.org

I am looking for a contact person to ask questions about
OpenOfficeWriter. I have googled my problem and cannot find an answer.
Please direct me to the appropriate source:

1) All images created with OpenOfficeWriter have automatically been
converted to AdobeAcrobatReader, which is the only part of the Acrobat
suite that is installed on my computer.
2) Any new document that I try to save as a (.doc) document shows the
appropriate extension, but when it is saved, it is saved only as
AdobeAcrobat pdf.

I desperately need help and hope you will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you!

Re: Problem Downloading Open Office

2019-10-04 Thread Dave Fisher
The downloads on sourceforge are the ones that are created by the Apache
OpenOffice project.

Matthias is the one who currently creates all of the Windows builds as a
volunteer. We are all volunteers and SourceForge has generously donated to our
community hosting for well over 250,000,000 million downloads for the last 8
years.

Our macOS builds support version 10.7 and greater. Apple has evolved their
Gatekeeper program over this time period. There are ways to get around this and
usually someone will point this out. Try looking at forums.openoffice.org.

Actually you should be concerned about malware from OpenOffice.de where the
windows installer and Linux repos are repackaged by the owner of that domain.

There are ways to verify that you are getting the correct package that involve
other tools. I’m away from desk, but others can answer that question.

Dave

Perhaps others on this mailing list will have some ideas. I’ve used OmniGraffle

Hi -

Resellers offer OpenOffice for sale on Media as a convenience.

The Apache OpenOffice project is an all volunteer project that offers
OpenOffice software for free.

You can download OpenOffice from https://www.openoffice.org/download/.

We just released the latest version - 4.1.7.

If all that you want to do is retrieve the text then you should look into
Apache Tika. It’s a programmers tool that does text extraction including OCR of
PDF.

That’s ironic because Lotus123 eventually became Symphony which was built on
OpenOffice and then IBM donated code to Apache OpenOffice which LibreOffice

John,

What makes you believe you are subscribed to this mailing list? There is
no record of anyone ever having been subscribed to this mailing list
with an ourfireside.com email address. Nor are you subscribed with the
icloud.com address you are using here and I am unclear as to why your

Now if you are genuinely receiving copies of posts to this mailing list,
send an email to users-ow...@openoffice.apache.org with accurate

There is no connection or relationship between Apache OpenOffice and any
edition of Microsoft Office, so the answer to your question is no.
However you are using the Outlook email client which is part of Office
365 and Apache OpenOffice does not provide an email client, but many
users choose the Mozilla Thunderbird email program as an alternative to
Outlook.

In addition to Brian's excellent answer, when you right mouse click on a
