I know Lior (cc'ed) fixed few bugs in this area and on the latest master I'm
not facing
such a behaviour.

In the future we plan to block editing the vm nics in that context.

What version of ovirt-engine are you using ?

its running inside vmware esx, if that matters? also, previosly it was

currently the vm is able to use up to 8gb with 4 cores, running alone

[Users] Virtio NIC in Windows failing at boot

2013-12-11 Thread Allen Belletti
Hi All,

Ever since moving from oVirt 3.1 (with Fedora image-based nodes) to oVirt 3.3
(and now 3.3.1) with CentOS 6.4 (now 6.5) nodes, I've been having a serious
problem with our Windows guests. To my knowledge, none of the Linux guests
have ever been affected.

The problem appears when a Windows guest is rebooted. Occasionally this
happens during maintenance work but more often as a result of Microsoft updates
which require a reboot. The most recent batch of these that we allowed
resulted in something like 35 of 40 Windows guests losing networking.

What we see is that the VirtIO Ethernet Adapter is enabled but shows no
evidence of actually being connected to the network. The MAC never appears in
our switches, etc. The solution is to connect to the guest via console and
manually disable, then enable, the NIC. Problem solved.

I've found at least two other references to this issue:

http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/11160-Windows-2008-R2-Server-Standard-Edition-VIRTIO-NIC-Drivers-dont-work-on-boot
 (exactly our issue)

http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/16550-Windows-server-2012-blue-screen-virtio-win-ethernet-card
(similar, though we never see a crash)

Needless to say, this is super annoying. Right now it seems my options seem to
be:

1. Implement a script to reset the NIC as suggested in the first link.

2. Revert to e1000 but not sure how much that will hurt performance and/or
whether it will limit us to 1 Gbps throughput.

Has anyone experienced this? Would I likely have better luck on the VirtIO
list? We've been running VirtIO Ethernet 61.63.103.3000 from
virtio-win-0.1-65.iso but I just now found 61.65.104.7400 included in
virtio-win-0.1-74.iso. Perhaps that will help although I don't see anything
relevant in the changelog.

Thanks,

Hi,

From the error, it looks like your host doesn't have vdsm-gluster

If you would have done host re-install before moving the host to
gluster-cluster, vdsm-gluster would have not installed.

incredible simple solution: after attaching a FC 19 host to a OVirt
cluster the machine will boot a debug kernel

[root@colovn03 ~]# dmesg | grep debug | head -1
[0.00] Linux version 3.11.10-200.fc19.x86_64.debug

Fixed that with:

[root@colovn03 ~]# vi /etc/default/grub

[root@colovn03 ~]# grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

Everything is back to normal. Should I file a BZ for that?

Re: [Users] oVirt/RHEV Android client (Opaque) available for beta testing

2013-12-11 Thread i iordanov
Also, can you please also try connecting to your VM by logging in with
admin@internal with a mobile browser (Firefox works), selecting a VM and
tapping the green console icon to get a console.vv?

The newest version of Opaque Beta supports .vv files.

Thanks!

2013-12-11 Thread i iordanov
Hi Jiri,

Thanks for the feedback. The thumbnails become 1/2 the size once you add 3
or more VMs to the list of saved connections.

Yes, Opaque is a SPICE client, and I am also hoping to add VNC support or
at least the ability to launch an external app.

Please tell us what version of oVirt /RHEV you are using, whether your
certificate is self-signed, and whether you've used remote-viewer on the
command-line successfully and what options and URI it needed.

I have a couple of users complaining of similar issues, and a couple plus
myself who've had no issues. I'm trying to figure out what is common
between the users who have problems.

Thanks!

Ok, now it is getting crazy. Something is going on inside debugfs.
I do not know what activated it, but I have two candidates:

1) DMA API debugging has been enabled. So I deactivated it with
echo Y > ./sys/kernel/debug/dma-api/disabled and instantly
throughput raises from 17MB/sec to 33MB/sec

2) Another location I cannot identify up to know. A perf trace shows
the following consumption path.

- 12,51% kworker/1:2 [kernel.kallsyms] [k] lock_is_held

  - lock_is_held

Any idea what activates tracing for nfs kmem allocations?

Hi Bob, I disabled the firewall on my storage server and attempted to add
another storage domain on the same storage server with v3 - it succeeded.
to further verify - I then enabled the firewall again and attempted to
add yet another storage domain with v3 - and it failed, just like before.
so it seems that you are right - something is probably wrong with the
firewall configuration on my storage server - I will investigate.
Many Thanks!

did I change my firewall config on my Host, you mean (i.e. the storage client)?
I thought that it didn't matter (i.e. only storage *server* firewall proper
configuration is important)?

No, I meant the storage server. In my case I use my Node as the storage
server, so host-deploy would configure the firewall for me. If you're
using a separate storage server it will require manual configuration.
Just as a sanity-check I'd probably try disabling the firewall
temporarily on your storage server, and see if it starts working with
v3. If not it's clearly something else.

There could be other issues which v4 addresses which could cause issues
with v3 - firewall is just the one I've run into :). As long as you're
not concerned about non-root-partition exports you're probably fine
as-is (although I thought v4 support was still experimental? If not, why
isn't it the default?).

Is there an interest in supporting the mobile browser use-case in the User

I configured the firewall on my storage server according to the instructions
in [1]. before that, the 'mount' command always failed for me, with/without
flags...

did I change my firewall config on my Host, you mean (i.e. the storage client)?
I thought that it didn't matter (i.e. only storage *server* firewall proper
configuration is important)?
but in any case: after deploying my Host, I haven't touched the firewall on
the Host, or on the storage server.

Maybe I've configured the NFS export path incorrectly within the "/etc/exports"
file on my storage server?
This is how it appears now:
---
/path/to/export *(rw,sync)
---

maybe I am missing some parameter(s) to allow it to work properly with v3?

Thanks!

Einav

Re: [Users] add NFS storage domain fails on mount timeout via ovirt

2013-12-11 Thread Bob Doolittle
Be aware that I've also had issues where v4 failed but v3 worked. This
happened when trying to export storage from the non-root partition. v4
is fussier in that regard although I'm sure it's configurable somehow.

So the most general case I've found is to stick with v3, but make sure
the firewall is properly configured on the storage server (or turn it off).

In summary, the advantages (I've found) of each:

NFSv3: requires no NFS configuration to export storage from non-root
partitions (useful if you might want to upgrade your OS some day,
although oVirt will have to deliver the feature for importing existing
domains simply).

NFSv4: requires no firewall configuration (although I thought oVirt
handled this automatically - did you change your firewall config after
host-deploy?)

Good luck,
   Bob

[Users] Blank web page after database migration

2013-12-11 Thread Rob Abshear

I followed the instructions from the following URLs

http://www.ovirt.org/User:Adrian15/oVirt_engine_migration

http://www.ovirt.org/Backup_engine_db

I backed up and restored the certificates and the configuration without
any issues. But the DB restore in the first set of instructions did not
work for me. So I used the method in the second document to backup and
restore the DB.

I wasn't able to perform the "Update encrypted password" step in the
first document, because that script does not exist. However, further
down the document, it states that, "You can avoid this editing by
choosing same password at both managers (old one and new one". So I am
assuming I am OK there. Not enough information to know that, though.

The issue I'm having is that, when I browse into the new controller, the
page loads, but it's completely blank. No errors or anything. All the
services seem to be running normally on the controller. I feel like I'm
close. What am I missing?

[Users] add NFS storage domain fails on mount timeout via ovirt

2013-12-11 Thread Einav Cohen
Hi,

When trying to add an NFS Export domain via oVirt-engine, it fails on
"Problem while trying to mount target".
when checking the vdsm.log, it seems that the problem is mount time-out.

when I tried to manually run the mount command, in the exact same manner
as vdsm, it indeed failed on Connection timed out after ~3 minutes or so:

[root@localhost vdsm]# /usr/bin/mount -t nfs -o
soft,nosharecache,timeo=600,retrans=6,nfsvers=3
1.2.3.4:/home/ecohen/public/export/engine/storage/195/iscsi-dc/export
/rhev/data-center/mnt/11.2.3.4:_home_ecohen_public_export_engine_storage_195_iscsi-dc_export

mount.nfs: Connection timed out

but - when trying to run the mount command again, with the exact same mount
source and mount target, but without any additional parameter, it succeeded
(after ~10 seconds):
[root@localhost vdsm]# /usr/bin/mount
10.18.57.137:/home/ecohen/public/export/engine/storage/195/iscsi-dc/export
/rhev/data-center/mnt/10.18.57.137:_home_ecohen_public_export_engine_storage_195_iscsi-dc_export

So I assume that I need to either configure my NFS Export folder differently,
or create the storage domain with additional parameters (using the "Advanced
Parameters" section in the GUI dialog or similar).

any pointers on what exactly should be checked / done?

many thanks in advance.

Einav

Yes, that's the behavior on both ovirt and ESXi when creating a new VM.
The problem is when you need to reinstall that VM. On ESXi I can hit
F12 on boot to PXE boot, OS re-installs, then boots normally to disk. On
ovirt, I have to select Run Once, move PXE to the top, re-install, when
the installer auto reboots, it goes back into PXE mode and starts
reinstalling again. I have to watch the console and power off at the
right time, then power back on in normal mode.

A better behavior for Run Once would be just that...Run once...If the
guest reboots Run Once should power off, or go back to normal boot
behavior. But I suppose that depends upon what your definition of Run
Once is.

The ESXi BIOS is a Pheonix BIOS and in this case, functions just like a
bare metal BIOS, like the ovirt Sea BIOS should :)

have you tried using a custom hook to pass to libvirt the parameter to
wait for 10 seconds during boot menu?

You could take al look at the options in /etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf

I see. But my storage infiniband network is working without a bridge.
That was the mounting network device of my initial mail. So with

Re: [Users] Abysmal network performance inside hypervisor node

2013-12-11 Thread Sander Grendelman
I'm just wondering if the tested interfaces are bridged because I've
seen some issues with
network througput and bridged interfaces on my local system (F19).

Basically, if an IP is configured on the bridge itself ( in oVirt this
is the case if the network
is configured as a VM network ) latency goes up and throughput goes down.

Can you rule this one out by using an unbridged interface?

We have an IB IPoIB network for storage. Thats why you see a throughput
at 400 MB/sec. For a cross check I mounted the NFS share through the
ovirtmgmt interface (our normal trusted internal network) on a 1GBit
Intel network card.

The throughput is exatly the same - throttled at round about 16MB/sec:

Maybe that is no problem at all for the VMs. But in my case it would be helpful
to know the switch to temporarily flood the channels for fast migration.

Running a small 2008R2 VM with only 512MB RAM has never been an issue

What´s worst is that I can´t seem to change what´s defined inside the

Hi Gianluca,

In oVirt 3.3, the scheduler had some transformation of how we compare hosts for
VM scheduling.
In previous versions the comparisons used to be on real numbers and now we use
weight functions that generates
integers, so somewhere in the rounding up of that numbers, we miss some crucial
fractions that used to compare the hosts better.

opened a bug for it:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1040460

Thanks for your feedback!

Re: [Users] Strange UI bug: tab "VM" unusable / oVirt 3.3.1+

2013-12-11 Thread Tomas Jelinek
While the question how did this happened I would like to start a parallel
discussion about what to
do when it happens next time (since this osinfo property files are editable we
have to expect that
some used OS will be deleted). It is certainly not correct to fail on NPE on
FE...

I can imagine following options to fix it:
- fix only on FE by logic like: if the VM has assigned an OS which is not
known, consider it is "other" (e.g. "0")
  - brings up the question what if the user deletes the "0" from the property
file

- fix this on engine side and do the magic (e.g. set the "other" if it is
undefined) so the FE will never get an incorrectly assigned OS ID

- have an "undefined" OS ID hardcoded in the engine which can not be deleted by
the user and we can assign it when the actual does not exist
  - again, we can do this re-assignment on FE or engine
  - brings up the question what the ID should be and what if the user adds some
custom item with this ID

- do not transfer OS as ID and than some properties which maps to this IDs but
real objects. So we could do instead of:
AsyncDataProvider.hasSpiceSupport(getEntity().getOs(),
getEntity().getVdsGroupCompatibilityVersion())
something like getEntity().getOs().hasSpiceSupport()
So we could have an implementation of "undefined" os which could react
appropriately.

I like most the last option but at the same time it is quite a big
refactoring...

What do you think?

Hi,

just wanted to add that this is not completely true:
an ISO domain can be attached simultaneously to different
DCs afaik.
But you are right for export domains.

I'm not sure what is it that you'd like to accomplish.
You mention a DB and then packaging.
Do you just want the current DB working in the new server?
If so just restore it and upgrade (packaging/dbscripts/upgrade.sh).

In case this is not what you mean, maybe another eye on this would help, Ohad?

Andrew,

Thanks for the patience in providing the logs.

When a node is identified by multiple host names, the engine is not able
to resolve it correctly. The fix is for the engine to use gluster host
uuids while resolving brick info as well (as per the bug logged)

In the meantime, for you to proceed, one way would be to use the ip
address (172.16.1.1 instead of gsx.melb.example.net
) to peer probe the gluster host .

Could you attach the engine.log as well as the vdsm.log from

There's an issue where engine cannot sync the bricks,
as bricks return a different IP address than the one
engine is aware of (in this case gsx.melb.example.net
 while engine knows the
host as hvx.melb.example.net
) . We need to fix this
path to use the gluster host UUID as well.

Have logged a bug to track this -

Could you also let us know if the following network is
listed under your Host's Network Interfaces sub tab?
172.16.1.1 (gluster) gsx.melb.example.net

If it is, then even without any fix, it should have
worked for you and we need to dig further on why it did not.

1x VDSM,Gluster

So to properly split the gluster data and

and two IPS.

172.16.0.1 (ovirtmgmt) hvx.melb.example.net

172.16.1.1 (gluster) gsx.melb.example.net

However the oVirt engine does not seem to like
this, it would not pick up the gluster volume as
"running" until I did a restart through the UI.

The issue (possible bug) I'm seeing is the logs
are being filled with
http://www.fpaste.org/59440/13862963/

Volume information isn't being pulled as it
thinks the gs01.melb.example.net
 is not within the
cluster, where in fact it is but registered
under hv01.melb.example.net

What's compatibility version of the clusters?

From 3.3 onwards, gluster-host-uuid is used to
identify a host instead of hostname.

[Users] Network profile lost after host edit

2013-12-11 Thread Simon Barrett
I have a problem where VM network profiles are lost when editing a host. E.G.

* VM is running fine on the correct network. Network Interfaces tab
shows "nic1" and "Network Name" shows the correct network profile.

* I shutdown the VM then right click and Edit.

* The General settings for the node shows "nic1 ". If I then
edit config, something like increasing memory or changing CPU cores then click
on OK, the VM configuration is saved without a network profile.

* When I boot the VM I cannot connect to it.

* I then have to edit the node again configure back in the correct
network profile.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue? If not, any suggestions as to how I
correct this so that the original network profile definition is retained after
an edit?

Many thanks,

Simon

[Users] Abysmal network performance inside hypervisor node

2013-12-11 Thread Markus Stockhausen
Hello,

we tried to migrate our first VM into the OVirt cluster. Lacking a separate
host for that task we simply jumped onto on of our FC19 OVirt nodes and
installed the virt-v2v packages. Converting speed ESX->NFS is less than
10 MB/sec. OUCH!

To make sure we have no problems in our environment we reinstalled FC19
on the node and made a direct NFS test: 450MB/sec read speed

Inserting node into OVirt cluster once again we are down to 15MB/sec

Could someone clarify which kind of throtteling is activated for the Host
and if that might be an issue for the VMS.

Attached a short log:

Before Ovirt Install:

Hey Simon,

yes - it is still planned to do el6/CentOS based ovirt-node-iso
releases.
Contributions and testing is always welcome.

Do I have to worry about them?
At the moment storage domain is ok for both hosts and VMs powered on...

No, you can ignore these errors - these are part of monitoring gluster
tasks. Have send a patch to disable the monitoring for 3.3 clusters and

Re: [Users] oVirt Node ISO

2013-12-11 Thread Simon Barrett
I would rather stick with the el6 iso if possible for the reasons mentioned in
the previous email. However, if there are no plans to continue with the
production of el6 ovirt-node iso's I'll switch to fc19.

So I suppose the question still stands, are there plans to release an el6 iso
for oVirt Node 3.0.3-1-1?

Many thanks.

not sure i agree. there are differences between the fedora and .el6 distro's,
especially around things like testing of backward compatibility for live
migration between different versions (for a clean upgrade path).
the fedora one covers newer features / fast moving the .el6 one is more robust
/ tested.

so depends on what you are trying to do.

I'd bet it was installed from an official release, but it seems
like it was RC2 back then:

Sep 02 17:50:18 Installed: ovirt-engine-setup-3.3.0-0.7.rc2.fc19.noarch

Reading the mail archive, I can see that this is a know issue but I do not
see the workaround. Can someone enlight me ?

Also, is there somewhere a coherent instruction set in order to make NFSv3
work (including iptables settings). I had to stop iptables to unblock

Hi,
we should decide today at oVirt sync meeting about oVirt 3.3.2 RC build
scheduled for today [1]
A bug tracker is available at [2] and it shows only 2 bugs still blocking the
release:
Whiteboard Bug ID Summary
virt1029885 cloud-init testcase does not work in engine 3.3.1
virt1025829 sysprep floppy is not attached to Windows 2008 R2
machine - even when specifically checked in Run Once

Omer: "3.3.2 backported and wait for review from REST"
- Is 1029885 solved by fix introduced for bug 1039009 ? I can't see any pending
patches about this pushed to 3.3.2 branch.

Roy:

oVirt 3.3.2 beta testing is in progress, thanks to all who already started
testing it!
For those willing to help testing the bugs, I suggest to add yourself as QA

Though I'm pretty sure the upgrade process (using `engine-setup`) did not
report any error. While grepping through all recent upgrade logs I cannot find
any invocation of 03_03_0660_alter_os_type_unassigned_to_other.sql.

So it did run. It was supposed to change the id. Is it possible you so ehow
overwrote it manually or anything like that?
no it didn't. look at the script name. and Frank says he can't find the
name in the log.

Something is wrong at this env since the script
upgrade/03_03_0660_add_enabled_column_to_policy_unit.sql
in the git repo is 03_03_0690 while 03_03_0660 should be the osinfo
script.

how was this engine installed, upgraded in time? nightly or with

Hey David,

stateless is a feature or a special mode of oVirt Node which is also
available on the "oVirt Node for oVirt Engine" image [1].
But please note that you will have to approve the Node in Engine after
each reboot if you use the stateless feature. This bug [2] might also
tackle the problem of a stateless Node.

I've tried looking up what's wrong but can't figure out really. And yes I
understand that I have to create it through the engine. The question was
about where it would be i-e the path. Hope you get what I mean now. :)

Re: [Users] add fc storage question

2013-12-11 Thread Vered Volansky
Hi Martin,

Did you try to force the operation when prompted for it? This is assuming it's
acceptable for you to actually loose existing data on the storage.

If you send the logs it should help understand what's going on there.

Vered

[Users] moving ovirt controller

2013-12-11 Thread Rob Abshear
I am running
ovirt-engine-3.4.0-0.2.master.20131107144332.git214186b.fc18.noarch on a
server and I want to move it to another physical server. I did a fresh
install on the new server and it is running
ovirt-engine-3.4.0-0.2.master.20131119150718.git949cac2.fc18.noarch. I
want to migrate the database from the old server to the new server. How
can I upgrade the old server so that the package versions match the new
server? Or, how can I downgrade the new server so that the packages
match the old server?

in/out. It's therefore difficult/impossible to obtain a console.vv file
from the user-mode web interface on a mobile device.

Would you consider adding functionality to connect to the console without a
double-click?

Thanks!

[Users] Host offline due to storage error

2013-12-11 Thread Ian Mordey
Hi there
I've got a 3 node oVirt 3.3.1 setup connecting to an Equallogic iSCSI SAN
array. My nodes keep going offline with these errors:
Host reports about one of the Active Storage Domains as Problematic.
Host cannot access one of the Storage Domains attached to the Data Center
 Setting Host state to Non-Operational

The host is then fenced, reboots and comes back up normally.

I see some of these errors prior to the event:
2013-12-10 13:36:49,442 ERROR

Any ideas where to look? I can't see any errors on the switches or SAN..

Thanks
Ian

[Users] Attach nfs domain to gluster dc

2013-12-11 Thread Juan Pablo Lorier
Hi,

I've created a new DC in order of been able to create vms on a glusterfs
data domain. As ovirt does not allow to share export and iso domains
between DCs (nice RFE) I detach those from the actual DC and when I try
to attach them to the new DC, I get an error:

2013-12-10 15:19:28,558 ERROR

But if I mount the nfs share manually from the hosts, I have no problems.
I've been having issues with nfs since I updated to 3.3.1, I have the
nfs shares in one of the hosts of the iscsi domain and the other host
complaints about not been ablo to access the domains from time to time.
The host where the shares are never complaints.
Any hints?

Re: [Users] Agents for Windows

2013-12-11 Thread Blaster
This setting is a PER GUEST setting, not system wide. On guests you
reboot frequently, don't set anything. On guests you need to change
boot options frequently, change it to what you want.

We have about 6000 guests on ESXi, have not had any issues working this
way. On production VMs that get built once and never touched for years,
don't change anything. On dev VMs that get rebuilt frequently, we add a
delay.

Just wanted to share my view.

Have been working with vmware vsphere for a number of years and when
dealing with a few hundreds of vm's, setting a boot delay on each is
not a good way to handle this issue IMHO. Besides, this setting
affects all sysadminsand might not be what everyone wishes. I think
the runonce function is great and do not want that removed.

needing to use F2/F8/F12 during Windows bootup in a VM (including
ESX/vSphere) is that sometimes it can be impossible to be quick
enough on the keyboard to get attention before the OS bootup has
begun. By the time you can get a console focus it's too late. That
can be enormously frustrating, and Run Once does help with that.

On ESXi
Guest menu -> edit settings -> Options -> boot options -> boot
delay. I set all mine to 10,000ms. Delays guest startup by 10
seconds each time you boot, but it’s plenty of time to get the
console up (if you need to) and get press F? to get where you want
to be.

Yes, that's the behavior on both ovirt and ESXi when creating a new VM.
The problem is when you need to reinstall that VM. On ESXi I can hit
F12 on boot to PXE boot, OS re-installs, then boots normally to disk.
On ovirt, I have to select Run Once, move PXE to the top, re-install,
when the installer auto reboots, it goes back into PXE mode and starts
reinstalling again.

Do I have to worry about them?
At the moment storage domain is ok for both hosts and VMs powered on...
