[ovirt-users] Re: Agentless backup solutions

2019-08-07 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

We are running oVirt 4.2.8.2-1.el7. Should probably upgrade but it works.

We are backing up the
engine<https://ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Backups_and_Migration.html>
every day with dump going to external NFS file system then onto the cloud.
For VMs we are doing backups within Linux itself using a program called
Restic<https://github.com/restic/restic> which then sends data to cloud S3
service. That runs daily as well.

We also save all configuration data, for applications running on our VMs such
as Apache, etc, within Ansible. So we can quickly recreate the VM using
Ansible, along with any applications, then restore any data, not saved in
Ansible, such as private PKI keys or PostgreSQL dump, for example, from Restic.
Dockerized applications even easier. There would be some downtime to redeploy
a new VM but this is acceptable given the constrains of our environment.

I am wondering under what situations has anyone experienced VM corruption?
This would help me determine if more effort should be invested in snapshotting
VMs and possibly exporting their disks. Though as I recall removing snapshots
from my storage domain would require shutting down the VM, right?

[ovirt-users] Re: Infiniband Usage / Support

2019-03-08 Thread Douglas Duckworth
You can change the MTU in the network config in oVirt engine. The management
portal. Go to clusters then networks or something like that. You can then
modify the MTU.

MTU can also be set manually in network scripts on the host but you need to
define this in the engine. At least this is how I got Infiniband working. I
can send screenshots on Monday.

Some details, step by step.

Install OS, Install OFED,
Create Bond for ib0 and ib1 - bond0
Set IP to bond0, and MTU to 65520.
Add Host to oVirt Cluster
At this moment of time everything is Fine.

Next step.
Assign New network to bond0, oVirt set MTU to 1500, and ... That is all. No
storage, No IP. I can't change MTU to 2044 or 65520 and can't assign IP to IB
interface.

From system perspective i do understand why.
oVirt Creates new bridge using brctl - and brctl didn't support IPoIB, but how
can i change it back to original config?

Can I get help with this issue? Still cannot increase memory for Hosted Engine.

From the logs it seams that the engine is trying to hotplug memory to the
engine VM which is something it should not happen.
The engine should simply update engine VM configuration in the OVF_STORE and
require a reboot of the engine VM.
Quick question, in the VM panel do you see a gold crown symbol on the Engine VM?

I am sure nothing will go wrong though we are doing daily backups of the hosted

If you are on 4.2.7 I would recommend upgrade the engine to 4.2.8 before
upgrading to 4.3.
Since in 4.3 we switched from fluentd to rsyslog for the metrics part, with
4.2.7 you may have some issue if you upgrade hosts to 4.3 before the engine
gets upgraded.

Hi

I opened a BugZilla at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1664777 but
no steps have been shared on how to resolve. Does anyone know how this can be
fixed without destroying the data center and building a new hosted engine?

Hello

I am trying to migrate my hosted-engine VM to another cluster in the same data
center. Hosts in both clusters have the same logical networks and storage.
Yet migrating the VM isn't an option.

To get the hosted-engine VM on the other cluster I started the VM on host in
that other cluster using "hosted-engine --vm-start."

However HostedEngine still associated with old cluster as shown attached. So I
cannot live migrate the VM. Does anyone know how to resolve? With other VMs
one can shut them down then using the "Edit" option. Though that will not work
for HostedEngine.

Though that will not work
for HostedEngine.

network, which is assigned to the interface, in

[ovirt-users] Re: losing ib0 connection after activating host

2018-12-10 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi Dominik,

I have added LACP bond network to all hosts and renamed the Hosted Engine using
"/usr/share/ovirt-engine/setup/bin/ovirt-engine-rename."

However, I am still missing the option to assign Migration and Management
network roles to this new bond.

Can you advise where I can find this option?

Thanks,

You have to create a new logical network in
"Network > Networks > New"
and assign this to ib0 in
"Compute > Hosts > hostname > Network Interfaces > Setup Host Networks".
After this you can assign a role to this network in
"Compute > Clusters > Clustername > Logical Networks > Manage Networks"

2018-08-29 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Thanks for sharing

I may want to do that

Though first I want to understand how the emails are arriving.

I stooped ovirt-engine-notifier.service and postfix.service on all hosts
and the hosted engine. So how are the email being delivered? They are not
running senmail so I don't understand what daemon's sending these messages.

[ovirt-users] Re: Turn Off Email Alerts

2018-08-29 Thread Douglas Duckworth
I agree however we are in testing phase so I make changes a lot. Therefore
alerts are not presently needed.

So how to I turn them off?

These steps do not work on hosted engine:

me@ovirt-engine[~]$ sudo systemctl stop postfix.service
me@ovirt-engine[~]$ sudo systemctl stop ovirt-engine-notifier.service
me@ovirt-engine[~]$ sudo systemctl status ovirt-engine-notifier.service
● ovirt-engine-notifier.service - oVirt Engine Notifier

Aug 29 13:41:55 ovirt-engine.pbtech systemd[1]: Stopped oVirt Engine

I still get an email every time I put a host in maint mode for example.

Sorry, I mean "migration network" for moving live migration traffic.

FDR infiniband much faster than 1Gb network which currently acts as
migration network, vm network, display network, mgmt network, etc.

[ovirt-users] Turn Off Email Alerts

2018-08-24 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

How do I turn off hosted engine alerts? We are in a testing phase so these
are not needed. I have disabled postfix on all hosts as well as stopped
the ovirt notification daemon on the hosted engine. I kept it running
while putting /dev/null in
/usr/share/ovirt-engine/services/ovirt-engine-notifier/ovirt-engine-notifier.conf
for
mail server. Yet I still get alerts for every thing done such as putting
hosts in maintenance mode. Very confusing.

[ovirt-users] Re: losing ib0 connection after activating host

2018-08-23 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi Dominik

Yes, the network-script was created by our Ansible role that deploys CentOS
hosts. It pulls the IP from DNS then templates the script and copies to
host.

I will try this oVirt step then see if it works!

[ovirt-users] losing ib0 connection after activating host

2018-08-22 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

I keep losing ib0 connection on hypervisor after adding host to engine.
This makes the host not really work since NFS will be mounted over ib0.

I don't really understand why this occurs.

OS:

[root@ovirt-hv2 ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS Linux release 7.5.1804 (Core)

Here's the network script:

[root@ovirt-hv2 ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ib0
DEVICE=ib0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=172.16.0.207
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
ZONE=public

When I try "ifup"

[root@ovirt-hv2 ~]# ifup ib0
Error: Connection activation failed: No suitable device found for this
connection.

The error in syslog:

Aug 22 11:31:50 ovirt-hv2 kernel: IPv4: martian source 172.16.0.87 from
172.16.0.49, on dev ib0

Latest OFED driver:

  HCA driver loaded

Configured IPoIB devices:

Currently active IPoIB devices:

Configured Mellanox EN devices:

The following OFED modules are loaded:

  mlx5_ib
  ib_uverbs

I can add an IP to ib0 using "ip addr" though I need Network Manager to
work with ib0.

[ovirt-users] Re: live migration of hosted engine between two hosts

2018-08-22 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Thanks!

I am downgrading to an older kernel to see if kdump will work. My other
hypervisor works fine with 3.10.0-862.9.1.el7 but this host has a newer one.

Sorry for disorganized nature of this thread.

Can you tell me how to get ib0 set as migration network?

[ovirt-users] Re: SSSD on Hosted Engine

FYI,

This allowed SSSD to work on hosted engine at least for system auth

semanage fcontext -a -t net_conf_t '/etc/hosts'

 /sbin/restorecon -v /etc/hosts

sealert -a /var/log/audit/audit.log shows a ton of daemons were unable to
read /etc/hosts...

2018-08-22 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Yay, I was able to restore nsswitch so things now work.

Anyway that oVirt can use SSSD for web auth?

Per https://ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/infra/aaa_faq/
there's a bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=829292 that
prevents it from working?

[ovirt-users] SSSD on Hosted Engine

2018-08-22 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

I am trying to configure sssd on my hosted engine. Essentially we control
host access in LDAP so I want sssd to read that thus allow my coworkers to
login to hosted engine vm.

For some reason sssd reports backend offline even though it's resolvable,
pingable, with ports open. I see that it's a SELinux issue which I can
resolve. After changing to permissive SSSD works.

To have system read sssd database I set hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to:

hosts files sss

Though it seems that I did something bad to /etc/nsswitch.conf as now yum,
ping, etc does not work.

Could someone suggest how to restore this file or could anyone share theirs?

I was then able to successfully re-install hypervisor after disabling kdump.

Migration now works

So both hosts have Infiniband. How can I set that up as Migration
network? I would rather that ovirtmgmt not be the migration network since
it's only 1Gb vs 56Gb FDR.

[ovirt-users] live migration of hosted engine between two hosts

2018-08-21 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

I am trying to live migrate my hosted engine between two hosts.

Both hosts are now up.

The hosted engine exists on shared NFS storage mounted on both hypervisors.

Though when I tried to migrate the VM I am told that's not possible.

Could this be since I never defined migration network? If so I tried doing
that in the oVirt UI as described
https://ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Logical_Networks/ though
many of these options have changed.

[ovirt-users] ovirt 4.2.5.2-1.el7 cannot locate ovirt-host package when trying to add new host

Do we need to add the ovirt repo on new potential host? If I don't do that

Though if I add https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release42.rpm
on the new host manually then adding the new host succeeds.

[ovirt-users] Re: hosted engine not reachable

2018-08-20 Thread Douglas Duckworth
To update I opened a bug report
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1618410

One cannot mask firewalld otherwise hosted-engine deploy will fail in this
manner.

Would be nice if a check would tell user to unmask firewalld rather than
fail in this way.

Eventually failed.

I am running CentOS 7.5 on the host. After re-reading documentation it
seems that my /var partition might not be large enough, as it's only 30GB,
but no warning message indicating that's an issue.

2018-08-15 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Ok

I was now able to get to the step:

Engine replied: DB Up!Welcome to Health Status!

By removing a bad entry from /etc/hosts for ovirt-engine.pbech which
pointed to an IP on the local virtualization network.

Though now when trying to connect to engine during deploy:

[ ERROR ] The VDSM host was found in a failed state. Please check engine
and bootstrap installation logs.

[ ERROR ] Unable to add ovirt-hv1.pbtech to the manager

Then repeating

[ INFO ] Still waiting for engine to start...

[ovirt-users] Re: Live Migration via NFS

2018-08-08 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi Nir

Thanks for clarifying

We can still use NFS as export domain which can be used to move VM once
they're shutdown?

Can GPFS be used to provide shared block storage domain?

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] Live Migration via NFS

2018-08-07 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

I haven't used oVirt in several years so wanted to ask how live migration
may have changed.

Can NFS facilitate live migration in cluster of two hosts each which have
NFS mounted?

The hosts would have local attached storage which would be the original
location of VMs.

[ovirt-users] GPFS Storage Domains - Live VM Migration Between LocalOnHost Only

2017-06-21 Thread Douglas Duckworth
Hi

I used RHEV in the past and now that I am in a new role we're considering
oVirt.

I have a few questions:

Does oVirt support network Storage Domains using GPFS?

Does oVirt support live VM Migration of between Hosts that have
"LocalOnHost" (direct attached) Storage Domains only?

Best
Doug
