Hello,

i don't know the tool, but maybe insecure = True will help.
Alternatively try to import ovirt's ca certificate into your system
truststore.

Hello,

i know no one. But oVirt il 10x easier to manage because has a simpler
setup (fewer components).

oVirt is a traditional hypervisor, for "traditional" workloads (pets,
not cattle). So it is suitable for vm deployed and running for months
to years. Support snapshots, vm live migration from host to host etc
etc.

In several cases people looking at an alternative hypervisor for
vmware lands on Openstack because it is a bigger project. After some
testing they find out is not suitable for their use case. Instead
oVirt is the right tool you're looking for if you want to have the
same kind of workload you'll run on vmware.

[ovirt-users] Re: Creating an Isolated/External Network

2020-05-08 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

you mean you want to create a network where no other virtual machines
are communicating, except from the two ones you created?

You need to create a new logical network, not on external provider,
but internally, with a new VLAN ID (if sharing the same interface of
other networks). Then you need to associate this network to the
network interfaces of each host. Ensure also the vlan id you specified
is configured on the switches where your hosts are connected.

[ovirt-users] Re: Strategy to Mange Ovirt VMs Created from Templates

2019-12-23 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello Jeremy,

we did this kind of workflow:

- create a standard base image, with all the required updates you
want. We usually started from the previous template of the same RHEL
release, but you can start from scratch every time if you want.
- Install cloud-init that starts at boot and then, after the first
successful execution, disables itself.
- a ssh key for ansible to allow login as root without password. This
key will be then removed after deployment is completed.
- create this new template as new version of the existing RHEL
template (RHEL 7 as example)

At deploy time with ansible:
- deploy a new vm starting from the latest template of RHEL7. Use
run_once cloudinit details for setting ip address. The vm has to be
connected to the right virtual network.
- wait_for vm to be reachable via network
- proceed with ansible to configure/install the remaining parts
(authentication, monitoring agents, backup utilities).

Hello,

as far as i remember from my certification course, ovirt/rhv 3.5 is
still based on 6. So you can easily upgrade in place and then make
detach/attach.

You'll need to reinstall the hypervisors when upgrading from 3.6 to
4.0, because changes the OS release from centos/rhel 6 to centos/rhel
7. And maybe you'll require to do the same with the engine server.

An alternative procedure can be to stop all the vms on the 3.4
cluster, detach the storage volumes and attach the storage volumes on
a new cluster 4.3, reimporting back all the vms after recreating the
networks. I'm not sure this can work directly with 3.4 (maybe you
require to upgrade at least to 3.5), because is a very ancient
release, but maybe you can upgrade up to 3.6 and this should work.
With this procedure you can upgrade with a single step, but with a
longer downtime.

Someone with more experience can confirm this?

Hello Luigi,

You can upgrade to the latest minor of 3.4 and then upgrade step by step to
each major (3.5 3.6 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3)
It's a long procedure, requires several downtimes for upgrading the cluster
compatibility level, but shouldn't be so hard.

2019-11-15 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello Adrian,

i did the migration with a data storage domain in this way:
- attach the storage domain to datacenter in site A
- move the VM to SD
- shut down the vm
- detach the storage domain from datacenter A
- attach to datacenter B
- Import VM in datacenter B
- Start vm
- move to final storage domain.

In this way the downtime for the migration is less than 5 minutes.

Create a new data domain for the vm transfer, move the vm you want to
migrate to it here. Stop VMs, detach storage domain, attach to new
cluster/datacenter, import vms, move them away from this storage
domain. Once done that you're free to reuse this data domain for
moving other vms.

2019-05-08 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello Raul,

i think the best solution is this to put engine on one site, managing
both. I'd put to an external vm, not self hosted engine, for better
flexibility in this kind of scenario. Once done, move a copy of the
data frequently to the remote site (copy the vm via storage
replication or backup/restore, or with engine-backup). Once the
primary site goes down, you can recover the engine vm (start from the
backup, or restore the backup with engine-restore). The database
contains all the references to the managed resources, so you can
connect back to the engine UI and see everything. I'd suggest also to
refer to resources via DNS, so there's no issues when addressing
changes.

Hello Dipak,

we shut down all the vms in a storage domain, detached and then
imported on the new environment. Once imported we moved the vms to a
newer storage and the old one removed.

I don't know what can happen with local storage, but i think works
like shared storage.

did you checked under the network configuration of ovirtmgmt on each

Since you're reporting a file from vdsm, that configuration can be

[ovirt-users] Converting Thin/Dependent to Thick/Independent

2019-01-18 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

I'm looking for a way for speeding up the deployment of new vms. I've
seen that if i use, under "Resource Allocation", "Storage Allocation"
flagged Thin, the vm creation is very quick.
But this makes the machine dependent from the template and if, for any
reason, the template gets corrupted or is not accessible, the vm will
not boot.

Is there any way for converting the vm from dependent to independent
while this is online?

Hello Jacob,

we're running a cluster of 6 HP BL460 G9 with virtual connect without issues.

[root@kvmsv003 ~]# dmidecode | grep -A3 '^System Information'
System Information
Manufacturer: HP
Product Name: ProLiant BL460c Gen9
Version: Not Specified

We've, anyway, a different kind of CNA:

[root@kvmsv003 ~]# cat /sys/class/fc_host/host1/device/scsi_host/host1/modeldesc
HP FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter

But i see is running the same module you're reporting

[root@kvmsv003 ~]# lsmod | grep bnx
bnx2fc103061 0
cnic 67392 1 bnx2fc
libfcoe58854 2 fcoe,bnx2fc
libfc 116357 3 fcoe,libfcoe,bnx2fc
scsi_transport_fc 64007 4 fcoe,lpfc,libfc,bnx2fc
[root@fapikvmpdsv003 ~]#

Since the fcoe connection is managed directly by virtual connect, i'm
not having fcoe informations shown with fcoeadm:

[root@kvmsv003 ~]# fcoeadm -i
[root@kvmsv003 ~]#

Are you sure you set up the right configuration on virtual connect side?

Hello Jacob,

we just did in our production environment using EMC VNX and EMC VPLEX
as storage backends. We simply zoned the new servers' hba with the
storage and on storage side we gave access to the same luns as the
older setup.

Once done this we stopped all the vms on source side (4.1), detached
the storage domain and imported on the new one (4.2). Then, imported
all the vms.

Please note that you MUST detach from source BEFORE attaching on
destination or you'll break everything.

Nothing special required. The only simplification is using the same
network names on both sides, so is easier to import.

We didn't automate anything, but you can do it for sure with ansible.

Hello,

did you evaluated shutting down vms via ansible or ovirt sdk?

for removing a volume i usually disable the logical volume (vgremove)
and then the physical volume (pvremove). At this point i have the

I have the same issue since some months. Since cloud-init doesn't sees
any configuration, applies the default, which is to use dhcp.

I don't remember if it is a bug of cloud-init or a misconfiguration,
but now i solved removing cloud-init package after the first boot.

In case you want redeploying, you can keep cloud-init and disable its
work by disabling the service:

touch /etc/cloud/cloud-init.disabled

Hello John,

this is an expected message if your source cluster has been shut in a bad
manner. You can import with no problems and then import all VMS.

If you want to automate this task, i suggest you to take a look to
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-disaster-recovery

For what i know, in console.vv file, vm.display.address property is
used, you can see the value with this api call:

https://engine.fqdn/ovirt-engine/api/vms

I'm using 4.2.0.2 and the file starts in this way:

[virt-viewer]
type=spice
host=kvm002.fqdn

So check with the api call and see which is the value you see there.

No,

The only way you have is to configure cinder to manage ceph pool or in
alternative you have to deploy an iscsi gateway, no other ways are
available at the moment.

So you can't use rbd directly.

Hello Colin,

do you mean hosts inside the same vlan cannot talk to each other
directly? Do you want to apply some security policies directly on
single nodes (microsegmentation)? Or you want that communication
between hosts placed in these two different vlans goes through
firewall?

Fantastic. Thanks for the explanation. I like to have a better knowledge of
what happens behind the scenes, because helps me to solve problems when

Perfect, thank you for the confirmation.

To change the compatibility level of DC, i've seen that all clusters
require has to be upgraded.
Does the upgrade of the DC requires the restart of all the VMs to have
the cluster completely upgraded or restarting the VMs is an activity
indipendent from this?

[ovirt-users] Is compatibility level change required for upgrading from 4.0 to 4.2?

2018-04-05 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

we're planning an upgrade of an old 4.0 setup to 4.2, going through 4.1.

What we found out is that when upgrading from major to major, cluster
and datacenter compatibility upgrade has to be done at the end of the
upgrade.
This means that we also require to restart our VMs for adapting the
compatibility level.

Do we require to upgrade the compatibility level to 4.1 before
starting the upgrade to 4.2?

We have more than 400 vms and only few of them can be restarted at our
convenience.

No, you're not. Now the vm is seeing the base memory (4GB) you were
seeing at boot, plus additional memory (2GB added). Next time you'll
boot the vm, the system will see a single block of 6 GB.

That's the difference.

Re: [ovirt-users] Network issues with oVirt 4.2 and cloud-init

2018-03-19 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello Sandy,

i had the same issue and the cause was cloud-init running again at
boot even if Run-Once hasn't been selected as boot option. The way i'm
using to solve the problem is to remove cloud-init after the first
run, since we don't need it anymore.

In case also disabling is enoug:

touch /etc/cloud/cloud-init.disabled

Hello,

you select the vm disks you want to move and with the right click you
select the menù entry "Move". You'll get a windows asking for the
destination storage domain.

Once set the values, you confirm and disk will be moved.

Because there are some operations (lvm initialization & so on) to be
done while setting up the volumes on FC storage. These operations will
be performed by the given host

No, storage is mapped by all the hosts and accessed directly

Absolutely no!

I supposte that your question is related to the way that FC is
managed. Since every host sees all the drives, there question is no
more appropriate.

IIRC if you set to maintenance the existing master, another one will
be selected.

Sure, nfs storage domain or fc storage domain doesn't make difference
in terms of interaction. You can move disks from one to the other
without issues.

[ovirt-users] oVirt API (4.0 and 4.1) not reporting vms running on a given storage domain

2018-03-01 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

i need to extract the list of the vms running on a given storage domain.
Copying some code from ansible's ovirt_storage_vms_facts simplified my
work but i stopped with a strange behavior: no vm is listed.

I thought it was an issue with my code, but looking more in detail at
api's i tried opening:

ovirt-engine/api/storagedomains/52b661fe-609e-48f9-beab-f90165b868c4/vms

And what i get is

And this for all the storage domains available.

Is there something wrong with the versions i'm running? Do i require
some options in the query?

I'm running RHV, so i can't upgrade to 4.2 yet

FYI it was a cpu utilization issue. Now that vcenter has a lower
average cpu usage, migration times halved and returned back to the
original estimations.

Thank Richard for the infos about virt-v2v, we improved our knowledge
on this tool :-)

Re: [ovirt-users] Live migration of VM(0 downtime) while Hypervisor goes down in ovirt

2018-02-11 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
What you're looking at is called fault tolerance in other hypervisors.

As far as i know, ovirt doesn't implement such solution.

But if your system doesn't support failure recovery done by high
availability options, you should take in account to revise your application
architecture if you want to keep running on ovirt.

We need a continuous availability of VM's in our production setup. If the
hypervisor goes down due to any hardware failure or work load then VM's
above hypervisor will reboot and started on available hypervisors. This is
normally happening but it disrupting VM's. Can you suggest a solution in
this case? Can we achieve this challenge using glusterfs?

I think there are two parts to achieving this:
1. Have a script that migrates VMs off a specific host. This should be easy
to write using the Python/Ruby/Java SDK, Ansible or using REST directly.
2. Having this script run as a service when a host shuts down, in the right
order - well before libvirt and VDSM shut down, and would be fast enough
not to be terminated by systemd.
This is a bit more challenging.

Who's shutting down the hypervisor? (Or perhaps it is shutdown externally,
due to overheating or otherwise?)
Y.

Using glusterfs is it possible? Then how?

Re: [ovirt-users] Ovirt 3.6 to 4.2 upgrade

Hello Gary,

as far as i know upgrade path isn't direct and you have to migrate
first to 4.0, then 4.1 and finally 4.2.

You can migrate vms from 3.6 to 4.0 IIRC. But don't know if mixing 4.2
and 3.6 it's possible.

No problem.

If you need i can provide you some python-sdk code. I've build an
entire migration tool that interacts with VMware and oVirt to
orchestrate the migration of vms.

Once completed the migration and some cleanup, we'll release it. At
the moment is just a bunch home made libraries connected each other
through a main function that's called through python-rq.

If you're not used to libvirt connection to vmware, all that fields
could scare. Anyway you need to fill out all the values, because are
needed to locate the vm you want to migrate.
When using that function you'll point to a specific host connected to
the given vcenter, in the given datacenter, inside a given cluster.
Import function will contact vcenter and ask for all vms in shutdown
status on that host, then allows you to continue with the wizard.

I haven't tried the recovery yet using ansible. It was an experiment
of possible procedure to be performed manually and was on 4.0.
I asked about this unexpected behavior and Yaniv returned me that was
due to OVF_STORE not updated and that in 4.1 there is an api call that
updates OVF_STORE on demand.

I'm creating a new setup today and i'll test again and check if i
still hit the issue. Anyway if the problem persist i think that
engine, for DR purposes, should upgrade the OVF_STORE as soon as
possible when a new vm is created or has disks added.

Another question:

we have 2 DCs in main site, do we require to have also 2 DCs in
recovery site o we can import all the storage domains in a single DC
on recovery site? There could be uuid collisions or similar?

That's not the case, vcenter uses 10g and also all the involved hosts.

In an older test i had the issue that disks were replicated to remote

ago. In worst case, from what you say, i think we'll be able to.

Ok, but if i keep master storage domain on a non replicate volume, do
i require this function?

I have to admit that i require, for subscription and support
requirements, to use RHV over oVirt. I've seen 4.2 is coming also from
that side, and we'll upgrade for sure when available.

4 conversions in parallel works, but each one is very slow. But i

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt DR: ansible with 4.1, only a subset of storage domain replicated

2018-02-05 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

i'm starting the implementation of our disaster recovery site with RHV
4.1.latest for our production environment.

Our production setup is very easy, with self hosted engine on dc
KVMPDCA, and virtual machines both in KVMPDCA and KVMPD dcs. All our
setup has an FC storage backend, which is EMC VPLEX/VMAX in KVMPDCA
and EMC VNX8000. Both storage arrays supports replication via their
own replication protocols (SRDF, MirrorView), so we'd like to delegate
to them the replication of data to the remote site, which is located
on another remote datacenter.

In KVMPD DC we have some storage domains that contains non critical
VMs, which we don't want to replicate to remote site (in case of
failure they have a low priority and will be restored from a backup).
In our setup we won't replicate them, so will be not available for
attachment on remote site. Can be this be an issue? Do we require to
replicate everything?
What about master domain? Do i require that the master storage domain
stays on a replicated volume or can be any of the available ones?

I've seen that since 4.1 there's an API for updating OVF_STORE disks.
Do we require to invoke it with a frequency that is the compatible
with the replication frequency on storage side. We set at the moment
RPO to 1hr (even if planned RPO requires 2hrs). Does OVF_STORE gets
updated with the required frequency?

I've seen a recent presentation by Maor Lipchuk that is showing the
"automagic" ansible role for disaster recovery:

https://www.slideshare.net/maorlipchuk/ovirt-dr-site-tosite-using-ansible

It's also related with some youtube presentations demonstrating a real
DR plan execution.

But what i've seen is that Maor is explicitly talking about 4.2
release. Does that role works only with >4.2 releases or can be used
also on earlier (4.1) versions?

I've tested a manual flow of replication + recovery through Import SD
followed by Import VM and worked like a charm. Using a prebuilt
ansible role will reduce my effort on creating a new automation for
doing this.

Anyone has experiences like mine?

Thank you for the help you may provide, i'd like to contribute back to
you with all my findings and with an usable tool (also integrated with
storage arrays if possible).

I'm not migrating the same guests, i'm migrating different guest, but
most of them share the same os baseline.
Most of these vms are from the same RHEL 7 template and have little
data difference (few gigs).

Do you know which is the performance impact on vcenter? I'd like to
tune as best as possible the vcenter to improve the migration time.

We have to migrate ~300 guests, and our maintenance window is very
short. We don't want continue the migration for months.

Hello Brett,

we have the same issue with RHEL 7.4.

Our workaround is writing /etc/sysconfig/network file with the variable GATEWAY=
so we have the variable set at next network activation.

Hello Rich,

i'm running virt-v2v throught the import option of oVirt.

[root@kvm01 ~]# rpm -qa virt-v2v
virt-v2v-1.36.3-6.el7_4.3.x86_64
[root@kvm01 ~]# rpm -qa libguestfs
libguestfs-1.36.3-6.el7_4.3.x86_64
[root@kvm01 ~]# rpm -qa "redhat-virtualization-host-image-update*"
redhat-virtualization-host-image-update-placeholder-4.1-8.1.el7.noarch
redhat-virtualization-host-image-update-4.1-20171207.0.el7_4.noarch

(yes, i'm running RHV, but i think this shouldn't change the behaviour)

I don't set anything in the commandline or whatever, i set only the
source and destination throught the API. So virt-v2v is coordinated
via vdsm and runs on the bare-metal host.

The network distance is "0", because vcenter, source vmware hosts, kvm
hosts and ovirt hosts lies in the same network. The only annotation is
that also vCenter is a VM, running on esx environment.

Network interfaces both on source and destination are 10Gbit, but
there may be a little slowdown on vcenter side because has to get the
data from esx's datastore and forward to the ovirt host.

Just for reference this is the virt-v2v i found with ps on an host
when converting (this may be not the one that generated the output i
reported before, but all are the same):

/usr/bin/virt-v2v -v -x -ic
vpx://vmwareuser%40domain@vcenter/DC/Cluster/Host?no_verify=1 -o vdsm

Hello Paul,

I think yes, depends on your switches. I'm working with lenovo
chassis' I/O modules that provide a configuration option called
network default-tag that does exactly this.

Hi Paul, i did the same with the same release.

The trick was to set the tagging also of the default vlan on the switch
during the change from untagged to tagged.

In example, if you have to move your ovirtmgmt to vlan 10, you can set your
port for serving the network both native and tagged so while changing the
ovirtmgmt setup you will not lose the connectivity.

Hi Gunder,

from my experience (we have several C7000 Chassis with Virtual
Connect), blades sees the FCoE connection as a standard FC connection.
We use 650FLB - HP FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter, and we add
all the storage using "Fibre Channel" storage type.

It's not directly related with cloud-init. If you want to use

Re: [ovirt-users] wheel next to the up triangle in the UI

I suppose is because they're started with "run once".

Happens the same also when you deploy with ansible using cloud-init. I
think with vagrant is the same.

[ovirt-users] Hosted Engine and network isolation

2018-01-10 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

i just completed the setup of my 4.1 new cluster and i'm validating
against a set of certification tests i did in the earlier version.

One of the test was consisting on isolating the host where
hosted-engine vm is running, setting ports on the switch down. Storage
domain hosting the engine is FC.

Up to 4.0.4, that was the version we was using during that tests,
isolating the host was causing a restart of the engine vm on another
available host with the fence of the isolated host.

Now, with 4.1.8, isolating the host doesn't restart the engine on the
other host, only moves the status of the host2 to
EngineUnexpectedlyDown, while host1 is isolated, with the engine vm
still running on it.

Is this due to storage leases? What should be the right action to take
in case of isolated host for moving engine away?

Thank you,

Luca

Yup, but that's different than using iSCSI, since you're using
directly qemu with librbd as storage module.
