[ovirt-users] Re: What is the status of the whole Ovirt Project?

2023-07-13 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin via Users
Hi,
We switched from Gluster to NFS provided by SAN array: maybe it was matter of
combination of factors (configuration/version/whatever),
but it was unstable for us.
SPICE/QXL in RHEL 9: yeah, I understand that for some people it is important (I
saw that someone is doing some forks whatever)

I think that ovirt 4.5 (nightly build __) might be OK for some time, but I
think that alternatives are:
-OpenStack for larger setups (but be careful with distribution -as I remember
Red Hat abandons TripleO and introduces OpenShift stuff for installation of
OpenStack)
-ProxMox and CloudStack for all sizes.
-Maybe XCP-ng + (paid?) XenOrchestra, but I trust KVM/QEMU more than Xen __
OpenShift Virtualization/OKD Virtualization - I don't know...
Actually might be good if someone specifically comments on going from ovirt to
OpenShift Virtualization/OKD Virtualization.

Not sure if this statement below https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32832999
is still correct and what exactly are the consequences of 'OpenShift
Virtualization is just to give a path/time to migrate to containers'
"The whole purpose behind OpenShift Virtualization is to aid in organization
modernization as a way to consolidate workloads onto a single platform while
giving app dev time to migrate their work to containers and microservice based
deployments."

In the past we toyed around with the idea of helping maintain oVirt, but
with the list of things we'd need to support growing beyond oVirt and
into other bits as well, we aren't equipped to fight on multiple fronts

For the moment we've found a home with SUSE / Apache CloudStack, and
when el7 EOL's that's likely going to be our entire stack moving
forward.

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirt 4.5.4 deploy self-hosted engine

2023-07-05 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin via Users
Hi,
I gave certain pointers in
https://www.mail-archive.com/users@ovirt.org/msg72371.html , but the person who
wrote initial question haven’t provided any updates

Several thoughts around that:

  1. you had several attempts (log file you attached contains attempts from
4th of July and below events are from 5th of July) and somehow I think that in
attempt below you haven’t specified amount of vCPUs and it took the value ‘max’
| he_vcpus | max | The amount of CPUs used on the engine VM |

  1. based on what you see in https://gitlab.com/libvirt/libvirt/-/issues/324
I am pretty sure that you
can disable cgroups v2
and you will be 100% sure that you are dealing with this fault/this might be
acceptable workaround

  1. the Libvirt versions specified in the commit addressing that
start with
v9.0.0
Hmm, so you use CentOS Stream 9 and
https://mirror.stream.centos.org/9-stream/AppStream/x86_64/os/Packages/ it is
Libvirt 9.
But maybe Libvirt here comes from ovirt repo?...

2023-06-28 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,

virsh -r nodeinfo
CPU model: x86_64
CPU(s): 112
CPU frequency: 4000 MHz
CPU socket(s): 1
[Konstantin] Actually this is not a fault, because of NUMA cells: 2
Core(s) per socket: 28
Thread(s) per core: 2
NUMA cell(s):2
Memory size: 4144275952 KiB
Same for ‘capabilities’, below doesn’t seem faulty:

vdsm-client Host getCapabilities
"numaNodes": {
"0": {
"cpus": [
[Konstantin] Fault because there is no numaNodes: { 1 …
And it is interesting that CPUs start with 56 for numaNode 0 (compare it with
NUMA node0 CPU(s) of lscpu)
"cpuSockets": "1",
Fault: "cpuSockets": "1" and not "cpuSockets": "2"
However "cpuThreads": "112" and list in "onlineCpus": is correct.

Hi, Konstantin.

Thank you for the fast reply.

On oVirt... New Virtual Machine -> Host -> Configure NUMA is currently disabled
but I still don't understand why oVirt doesn't identify the 2 sockets.
I'll do some more research and install version 4.5. I am currently using
version 4.4.10.

Your 8276 processor belongs to the former Cascade Lake Family (server), which

For CPU requirements see:
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_standalone_manager_with_remote_databases/#CPU_Requirements_SM_remoteDB_deploy

In Linux, you can see the number of sockets with: grep "physical id"
/proc/cpuinfo | sort -u | wc -l

Not sure how you installed your oVirt engine, but with hosted-engine, oVirt
installs with 1 virtual socket and in advanced options can be change to 2 or 4.

[ovirt-users] Re: Unable to enable HPET component of an specific VM in oVirt 4.7

2023-06-02 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
there is no ovirt 4.7, the latest (and it could be the last ☹) version of ovirt
is 4.5. Probably you mean 4.4.7?
Probably enabling HPET is not needed so often, so I guess it is just a missing
feature of ovirt.

Anyway, replying on your question - it is wrong to modify Libvirt XML, the
source of truth is pretty much database in ovengine.
You might consider VDSM hook:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.4/html/administration_guide/appe-vdsm_and_hooks
(but I don't know a lot about VDSM hooks myself)

Hello community members,

I'm currently using oVirt 4.7 as my virtualization environment, and I'm facing
an issue with enabling the HPET (High Precision Event Timer) component in the
XML configuration file of virtual machine (VM).

Upon inspecting the XML file, I noticed that the `` line is missing, indicating that the HPET component is disabled.

Here are the steps I have taken so far:

1. I verified that the VM's XML configuration file does not include the `` line.

2. While the VM was powered on, I used the following command to edit the XML
configuration file:
```
virsh edit VM_NAME
```
I added the `` line to the XML file. However,
the changes did not persist after restarting the VM.

To provide additional information, on the host where oVirt is running, the
available clock sources can be viewed by executing the following command:
```
cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
```
The output shows the available clock sources, such as `tsc`, `hpet`, and
`acpi_pm`.

To resolve the authentication issue with the `virsh` command, I created a user
with appropriate privileges using the following command:
```
sudo saslpasswd2 -a libvirt USERNAME
```
After creating the user, I was able to authenticate successfully with the
`virsh` command using the newly created credentials.

However, I'm unable to find an option to add the HPET parameter in the web
console of oVirt. It seems that the option to configure HPET is not available
in the web console.

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue in oVirt 4.7? Could you please
provide guidance or suggest a solution to enable the HPET component in the XML
configuration file of a powered-off VM in oVirt 4.7? Any insights, experiences,
or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

[ovirt-users] Re: NIC Ordering

2023-05-25 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
the situation is significantly different in case you say that Foreman is not
deterministic in supplying NICs via API.
So all this determinism in ‘first interface gets lowest MAC/lowest PCI’ is not
helpful because you essential don’t know which interface becomes the first one.
In fact, I am not sure if your OS uses ‘lowest PCI’ or ‘lowest MAC’ for
ordering, I think that ‘lowest PCI’ is much more widespread.

A few ideas:
-I think that slightly more elegant: maybe the idea is to
create VM with first NIC, then add second NIC and then start your VM?
-I am not sure what is your OS, but udev rules is a powerful mechanism to
control NIC assignment.
In case you say that behaviour of Foreman can’t be addressed – you might change
MTU by 1 byte for certain network (1499) then use this attribute to find that
NIC
ATTR{mtu} or modify creation of VM to create one vNIC with link state=down and
then use ATTR{operstate}

Konstantin

Betreff: [ovirt-users] Re: NIC Ordering

Perhaps it's more of a Foreman/API limitation.

In Foreman I provision two interfaces, that in the Foreman UI at least, have an
ordering. Sometimes when they are provisioned in oVirt the "second" interface
has a lower MAC than the "first" interface and so the ordering in Foreman is
different to the ordering in oVIrt.

This breaks a bunch of stuff that relies on the networks being on specific
interface (eth0, eth1).

I don't create the VMs directly in the UI but use the API with Foreman. If I
change the MACs on the NICs I have to go back and update Foreman as well.

My workaround today is unplug the NIC I want to be second, briefly power-up the
VM so the "first" NIC gets assigned a PCI address, shutdown and re-plug the
"second" NIC. On power-up the "second" NIC will be assigned a later PCI address
and so achieve the ordering I want.

It's just fiddly and can only be done on first boot. I was hoping for a more
elegant solution that works when you have large numbers of VMs to provision.

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirt node

2023-05-22 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
It is something like 'IPv4/IPv6 addresses that are result DNS resolution of
hostname should be identical to interface configuration (ip a)'
My guess would be that DNS server that resolves ovirt.bee.moitel.local doesn't
have records.
I think that ovirt 4.5 resolves it by forcing you to use --4 or --6 for in
hosted-engine deploy.
In ovirt 4.4 this is optional, but I think that using --4 in your deployment
command it might resolve it for you.

Another way forward is to disable IPv6 on your interface.
Check out:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-collection/blob/master/roles/hosted_engine_setup/tasks/pre_checks/002_validate_hostname_tasks.yml
(this is from master, you can find this file locally on your deployment host in
case of any doubts regarding ovirt 4.4 version and version in master)

Konstantin

[ovirt-users] Re: Patching issue on RHEL 8.7-8.8

2023-05-22 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
not sure what was the idea of ovirt developers, but current text in
https://ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html suggests 'RHEL 8.6 exactly'
rather
than 'RHEL 8.6 or above' and I think there is probably no eg. CI that tested
RHEL 8.7/RHEL 8.8
Anyway, assuming that you have a test system it might be worth to try upgrading
to RHEL 8.8
For the problem below it sounds that you should delete
centos-stream-release-8.6-1.el8.noarch first, then do yum update, then install
centos-stream-release-8.6-1.el8.noarch with parameters given in the page
above/given by me below (you probably did that during initial installation)

For me it looks that idea is like this:
-ovirt doesn't actually need centos-stream-release-8.6-1.el8.noarch
when it is installed on RHEL: as the name suggests
centos-stream-release-8.6-1.el8.noarch is incompatible with any other
distribution except CentOS Stream
-in page above the installation of rpm -i --justdb --nodeps --force
"http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-stream/BaseOS/$(rpm --eval
'%_arch')/os/Packages/centos-stream-release-8.6-1.el8.noarch.rpm"
which basically just a patch for ovirt to think that it works on top of CentOS
stream (that is, --justdb and --nodeps parameters)
I would guess that this patch is only needed during installation of oVengine
(or, restore from backup/disaster recovery)

Konstantin

Hi,

I think that this is because of move to Keycloak

But yes, I think it is not very explicit in the way that moving to Keycloak
doesn't necessarily mean removal of basic authentication, but in the context of
ovirt - it did that.

I dont see any release notes about removal of basic authentication in 4.5.x. So

No, it is a clean install of oVirt node in a KVM guest/VM.
All I do in the node is I configure two ifaces and both are "regular"
ethernets, then I start HE setup.
Bare-metal host is Centos 9 Stream with everything up-to-dayte off the distro
repos.
I'd think this should be easily reproducible.

[ovirt-users] Re: hosted setup failed with error on 'Initialize lockspace volume'

2023-05-05 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
Did you follow
https://www.ovirt.org/develop/troubleshooting-nfs-storage-issues.html ?
In general those are several aspects that would prevent ovengine from writing
to the directory and in addition to checking it manually
you can use nfs-check.py described over there.

I think the fact that your NFS is over Ceph should be something that is
'abstracted away' or you might ask yourself - how NFS share implemented by Ceph
is different from any other NFS share?

Konstantin

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirt 4.5.4 install failure

2023-05-02 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
I would say that creation of local VM fails (check out virsh list --all, I
think you don’t need authentication info at this moment of installation) and
error is driven by combination of:
OS having some version of Libvirt +that uses cgroups v2 (so RHEL 9 or RHEL 8
with cgroups v2…). Please provide information on that.
And with that , not specifying number of vCPUs for HE. Try out specifying it.

Maybe-maybe older virt-install passes ‘-1’ and that won’t work for configuring
number of CPU shares on OS with cgroups v2.
(it should be ‘max’)

There is https://gitlab.com/libvirt/libvirt/-/issues/324, but it is needed to
understand if it applies here and, if yes, how.

Konstantin

[ovirt-users] Re: Unable to upload or download iso via admin portal

2023-04-13 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
I think that you might simply need to restart ovirt-imageio-proxy service
because it potentially uses the old certificate/different
from the one used by ovirt-engine service.

And in general I would suggest to troubleshoot that using
https://myhomelab.gr/linux/2020/01/20/replacing_ovirt_ssl.html

You should be able to troubleshoot that using 'curl'/openssl commands: in the
way that it relies on system trust of root CAs and trying engine URL
vs. image-proxy URL might reveal more information. This might mean that you
ignore browser (and its own store of certificate/trust settings...), but start
from point that there is storage of root CAs
and trust exists because HTTPS endpoint provides certificate chain: server
certificate plus certificate of sub-CAs (if needed) that is ultimately signed
by root CA that trusted by your system.

Konstantin

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt Installation script

2023-04-13 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,

hosted-engine (with --deploy parameter) is the installation script that
triggers Ansible. So it is like Ansible playbook or something that triggers
several playbooks.

But to begin with you can ignore the fact that under the hood there is Ansible:
you don't need to write Ansible (eg. playbooks) yourself or
customize it using Ansible YAML vars (that part is abstracted away via
interactive prompts/potentially you will end up using answer file)
In case you will run into failure when installing HE: then you might be forced
to troubleshoot it and you will be at a point ' Ansible task <...> failed'

You need to check whether you use VNC or Spice and check certificates on ovirt
host(s)
/etc/pki/vdsm/libvirt-vnc/server-cert.pem
/etc/pki/vdsm/libvirt-spice/server-cert.pem
And the idea is that certificate is signed by CA that is trusted by your client
and is not expired.

Maybe following solutions will be useful :

[ovirt-users] Re: 4.5.4 Hosted-Engine: change hosted-engine storage

2023-01-18 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
The problem/problems don't seem to be related to HE storage in any way.
As you don't use OVN I would make sure to remove any parameters in answer files
that mention 'ovn' or something about external providers (and let ovengine
setup prompt for any values interactively)
and make sure that none of the networks have that 'external network' checkmark
with ovn as provider in ovEngine GUI
(but yes, I see that you explicitly said 'I don't have OVN in my dump'...)

For Keycloak probably you see the change described in
https://www.mail-archive.com/users@ovirt.org/msg70682.html and thus it is
indeed likely that you need to use OVESETUP_CONFIG/keycloakEnable=bool:False

All in all, there are 3 primary things to think of: backup, answers file and
ovirt version (and of course things like OS/networking aspects...) and you
might narrow down the troubleshooting by using some test host and then don't use
backup/adapt or don't use answers file.

Konstantin

[ovirt-users] Re: 4.5.4 Hosted-Engine: change hosted-engine storage

2023-01-17 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
Check out https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6529691.
I would say that you have done a few hacks that are in 'vicinity' of correct
approach, but the correct approach is a bit simpler than you what you tried to
come up with.
The idea of procedure is that you should 'forget' about the original eg. image
files and to a significant extent
The procedure is "launch a brand new hosted-engine, but actually use a database
backup "
Your answerfile should correspond to what you need (or you just not provide it
and answer questions interactively) - obviously you should not use glusterfs as
domainType but instead
OVEHOSTED_STORAGE/domainType=str:nfs
and also the essential thing
OVEHOSTED_STORAGE/storageDomainConnection=str::/

Maybe the owner/group of NFS directory was not changed to vdsm/kvm, the
solution above contains reference to that.

Konstantin

Hello,
I have some trouble with my Gluster instance where there is hosted-engine. I
would like to copy data from that hosted engine and reverse to another
hosted-engine storage (I will try NFS).
I think the main method is to put ovirt in global-management mode, stop the
hosted-engine instance, unmount the hosted-engine storage
systemctl stop {vdsmd;supervdsmd;ovirt-ha-broker;ovirt-ha-agent};
hosted-engine --disconnect-storage
umount /rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/localhost:_glen/
and then redeploy the hosted engine with the current backup:
method 1: [doesn't work; it fail the ansible script after the pause]
ovirt-hosted-engine-setup --4
--config-append=/var/lib/ovirt-hosted-engine-setup/answers/answers-20230116184834.conf
 --restore-from-file=230116-backup.tar.gz
--ansible-extra-vars=he_pause_before_engine_setup=true
but it doesn't work

method 2: [I cannot find the glitch]
I saw in every node there is a configuration under
/etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf where there are some interessant
entry:
vm_disk_id=0a1a501c-fc45-430f-bfd3-076172cec406
vm_disk_vol_id=f65dab86-67f1-46fa-87c0-f9076f479741

conf_image_UUID=9871a483-8e7b-4f52-bf71-a6a8adc2309b

so, the conf_volume under conf_image dir is a TAR archive:
/rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/localhost:_glen/3577c21e-f757-4405-97d1-0f827c9b4e22/images/9871a483-8e7b-4f52-bf71-a6a8adc2309b/206e505f-1bb8-4cc4-abd9-942654c47612:
 POSIX tar archive (GNU)

That I think is the common configuration. I copied the structure (from
3577c21e-f757-4405-97d1-0f827c9b4e22 directory) in the new storage (nfs),
changed the entries under local configuration and "shared configuration":
from storage=localhost:/glen to storage=:/directory (writable by vdsm
user and kvm group)
from domainType=glusterfs to domainType=nfs
and issued:
1. hosted-engine --connect-storage <- work
2. hosted-engine --vm-start <- doesn't work because there is a complain about
the not-starting ovirt-ha-agent

What can I do?
Is there any documentation somewhere?

[ovirt-users] Re: Unable to start VM with SRIOV IB interface

2022-12-15 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,

It looks that ovirt doesn't consider that your host has any PFs/VFs.
You should navigate to ovengine 4.3 and 4.4 and see those differences in 'Host
Devices' in some host.
The basic check is then to check if iommu is 'on' on those hosts. This might
rely on ovengine's control on that (check 'host properties'), but you should
check if that really works by commands on the host.

Check
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux_openstack_platform/7/html/networking_guide/sr-iov-support-for-virtual-networking
Even though it is for OpenStack, you should check those parts that relate to
hypervisor (thus only section 9.1. Configure SR-IOV in your RHEL OpenStack
Platform deployment
) and things about your HW/drivers/those things around number of PFs/VFs.

Once you change anything on host you should click 'Refresh capabilities' and
see if PFs/VFs appeared

[ovirt-users] Re: New install of 4.5.4 fails on "activate storage domain"

2022-12-15 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
I would advise:
1) Check that NFS directory has correct user/group ownership (see
below) and 755 permissions.
2) Check NFS exports that it covers ovengine
And ovirt host as well and try to mount from there.
3) check that NFS directory is empty
4) pause the installation and connect to ovengine CLI/GUI:
-it will be local network with IP address specified in
/etc/hosts that you should be able to reach via CLI from ovirt host
-Ansible does some port forwarding in order to simplify getting
GUI (and displays some information about that) somewhere over there in
installation.
-there is some Ansible section that you should include before
failed step in order to get the 'pause'. I don't remember
if you will still have running VM in case you just let Ansible execute its
'cleanup when failed' tasks.
Once connected to ovengine you are likely to find more details in
/var/log/ovirt-engine/ and try mount from there and try to activate that
created storage domain via GUI.

It is interesting to find the events in logs on ovengine really doing reboot of

I guess that /var/log/messages and probably some ovengine logs should provide

Hello,

I've seen something similar to this too. Although, for me it occurred when a
standalone engine attempted to allocate a new disk on a Gluster storage. While
the cluster's VMs were experiencing high virtual disk I/O. (Found out later
they were doing updates at an odd time...)

The result was random VMs being forced off until it had cleared enough of the
bottleneck, and one host was rebooted. After around 3 minutes of wait time. I'm
assuming it used ssh as the hosts in question have a configuration problem with
their power management and cannot be reset currently by the PDU. But it was
still an odd occurrence given that the engine host itself was the cause of the
storage "outage."

Is this the correct behavior of oVirt?

Konstantin, thank you very much for the explanation, it was very enlightening.

I believe I left something open in the previous message.

I'm using Hosted Engine, all VMs have HA enabled and Power Management is
disabled on all hosts. No IPMI configured (at least I didn't configure anything
about iLO/IPMI in oVirt).

There was a loss of communication with the Storage for approximately 3 minutes
and this caused all Hosts to reboot.

You can disable Power management for hosts.
Before doing that you need to understand following:
-what is impact on VMs when this happens?
-the working assumption is that your VMs work
just fine, but you need to think about other cases where VMs lose their storage

For me it seems that this was storage domain that is not a VM storage domain,

You need to understand that idea of fencing is either to recover host
automatically and possibly to restart VMs
and make sure that there are no duplicated VMs.
There are 100% cases where fencing is used and there is subset of those, X%
number of cases where you would consider that behavior is suboptimal.
The drawback of disabling fencing is that you might get suboptimal behavior in
Y% cases (100% minus X%)

Hi,
Not a direct answer – but I think something to consider:

-I am not sure what virtio is there ‘out of box’, but I imagine that you need
to check what is latest virtio-win package
containing NetKVM driver.
 ?)
-I would imagine that main driver of higher virtio-net performance is support
and use of multiqueue.
I don’t know about Windows 2019 , maybe it is matter of configuration.

One customer sees 2,5gbs on 10gbs adapters for w2019 VM with virtio using
iperf3.
Instead with Oracle linux 8 VMS of the same infra sees 9gbs.
What is the expected maximum on windows with virtio based on experience?
Thanks
Gianluca

[ovirt-users] Re: Help moving hosted_storage data/domain

2022-11-28 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
Procedure to change storage domain for Hosted Engine is here:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6529691 (you can apply for free-of-charge
RedHat developer license in order
to get access to RedHat KB). You might consider trying it first on test cluster
before doing that in production.

But I would discourage you from using GlusterFS. Not sure if that is matter,
but I saw that GlusterFS has quite serious issues with robustness against
failures
(it is likely that you won't lose data, but you might need more manual
interventions to fix GlusterFS cluster than necessary)
Maybe you could consider having redundant (active/passive) NFS server?

And a comment about version of ovirt: there is no ovirt 4.6 as of now
(actually, it is a question whether ovirt 4.6 will be ever released)
Latest version of ovirt is 4.5 and it seems that latest version of Oracle
Virtual manager is pretty much ovirt 4.4.

Konstantin

Hi there, first time here.

I successfully installed Oracle Linux Virtual Manager that's basically
Ovirt 4.6. I have a datacenter, 2 separate cluster, 3 host per cluster (self
hosted engine configuration).
During the installation process I defined the nfs storage for the hosted
engine VM, and now I'm in trouble. I can shut down any host but the one that
serve the nfs.
I understand lately that I need a distributed storage to obtain HA, then I
added the glusterfs support. I can see my gluster volume but I can't add it as
storage domain. It's simply doesn't appear in dropdown menu when I try to add
it as new storage domain.

A part for that: there's a way to move data from hosted_storage domain (the
nfs one) to another one? I try to setup another one as main but no joy. If a
try to move the disk from there it's say to me I can't.

I searched on the web but I found several answers, starting from: "no you
can't" to "with engine-backup utility" and I'm quite confused.

Reinstall it isn't an option, i have approx 60 vm active.

Any help it's appreciated.

(forgive eventually mistakes, I'm not a native).

[ovirt-users] Re: Please, Please Help - New oVirt Install/Deployment Failing - "Host is not up..."

2022-10-21 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
It seems that you are here:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-collection/blob/33d273e2e823bf0c2440a9009a0d38d1b383c27c/roles/hosted_engine_setup/tasks/bootstrap_local_vm/05_add_host.yml

I would say that in this case following is likely:
1) virsh list (with authentication) shows that hostedEnginelocal is running
2) SSH is successful from ovirt host due to temporary entry in /etc/hosts
3) You might see that ovirt-engine service is running on port 443 and then it
is exposed
as port 6900 on your ovirt host.

Check out
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-collection/blob/33d273e2e823bf0c2440a9009a0d38d1b383c27c/roles/hosted_engine_setup/tasks/bootstrap_local_vm/05_add_host.yml#L132
That means you can provide he_pause_host Ansible variable with value 'true' and
take a pause for troubleshooting here.

So in case above is correct for your situation - then you should do port
forwarding from port 6900
to port 443 on your local workstation/somewhere where you have browser and
connect to ovengine GUI
Then you go to 'Hosts' and see if the host is 'up'. It is unlikely that it will
be up.
Alternatively, there is REST API on this I think (=the one used by Ansible
module in 'wait for host is up' task), but I don't know specifics.

In GUI go to 'Setup host network' and make sure that network bridge/network
interfaces and maybe try to assign this network
(be careful: you might also connectivity to your ovirt host). Check those
DHCP/Static IP assignment aspect.

There could be too many assumptions above, but hopefully it gives you something
to use within troubleshooting.

Konstantin

Hi Everyone,

Could someone please help me - I've been trying to do an install of oVirt

My setup:

- oVirt v4.5.3
- A brand new fresh vanilla install of RockyLinux 8.6 - all working AOK
- 2*NICs in a bond (802.3ad) with a couple of sub-Interfaces/VLANs - all
working AOK
- All relevant IPv4 Address in DNS with Reverse Lookups - all working AOK
- All relevant IPv4 Address in "/etc/hosts" file - all working AOK
- IPv6 (using "method=auto" in the interface config file) enabled on the
relevant sub-Interface/VLAN - I'm not using IPv6 on the network, only IPv4, but
I'm trying to cover all the bases.
- All relevant Ports (as per the oVirt documentation) set up on the firewall

I have followed the oVirt documentation (including the special

no special settings, exactly as they are written.

All the dnf installs, etc, went off without a hitch, including the "dnf

So I kicked-off the oVirt deployment with: "hosted-engine --deploy --4

I used "--ansible-extra-vars=he_offline_deployment=true" because without

[ovirt-users] Backup/restore of Hosted Engine VM

2022-09-26 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,

I am aware that there is a procedure of backup/restore documented in
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.2/html/self-hosted_engine_guide/backing_up_and_restoring_a_self-hosted_engine
, but I would like to have also else as well when it comes to backup (and
restore) of hosted engine VM and avoid using hosted-engine --deploy /
engine-backup

Is anyone doing Libvirt snapshot or any other similar thing to back up ovengine
VM?
Part of that is the XML of the HE VM should be intact, so currently I am
considering
https://libvirt.org/kbase/live_full_disk_backup.html#full-backup-with-older-libvirt-versions
and https://gist.github.com/cabal95/e36c06e716d3328b512

[ovirt-users] Restore from backup, consistent view between ovirt DB and Libvirt/QEMU

2022-02-16 Thread Volenbovskyi, Konstantin
Hi,
Let’s say that backup of ovirt engine is done once every day, for example 6 AM
using engine-backup tool.
Then during the day the changes are made that not only influence the database,
but actually influence Libvirt/KVM/QEMU
(create/delete VMs,snapshots, disks, ).
Now let’s say at 18:00 an engineer restores from the backup.
How the ovirt will be ‘synchronized’ to Libvirt (/QEMU)?
Of course, it is OK to expect that system is being rolled back, but in that
scenario there is nothing that I can imagine that will synchronize
Ovirt database state to Libvirt/KVM/QEMU state.
And once anything on (migrate/stop/start) – it will just fail in many cases
because of inconsistency.
In 4.2 documentation
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.2/html/self-hosted_engine_guide/reinstalling_hosts_she_backup_restore
there is sentence like:

“If migration is enabled at cluster level, virtual machines are automatically
migrated to another host in the cluster; as a result, it is recommended that
host reinstalls are performed at a time when the host’s usage is relatively
low.“
Let’s say that there are 5 hosts (numbered from 1 to 5), 3 of them are
hosted-engine (let’s say 1 to 3).
Then first of all, person should find a brand new host (host 6), then install
HE on that. OK, I understand that HE can be then reinstalled on hosts 1 to 3.
But it when it comes VMs- if really migration of VMs can work, considering
inconsistency above?
Eg. snapshot that is already in QEMU (done at 11:00) and the volume chain is
updated is gone from database (because it is restored to 6 AM)
And in general, anything should be done towards non-HE hosts?

So far the restore seems to be very intrusive and quite error-prone in two
parts: first part is actual handling of VMs.
And second part when ovirt-engine gets configured practically from scratch
(through that dialog)

BR,
Konstantin
