If the UI is not intuitive enough, we need newbies to tell this - experienced
users do not notice anymore...

Re docs - IMO best is to make sure that the search terms that people might
use when searching for solutions, will return good results. People do not
read docs like books. So if you did that and didn't find anything easily,
it means we should improve the docs.

I would, but I felt uncomfortable doing that, as I'm still an oVirt newb. I
thought perhaps I legitimately missed this somewhere. I'll peruse the doc
organization to see where I think this makes sense, and I'll certainly do
that and the RFE. Thanks.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB 2.0 compatibility -- RESOLVED!

2017-02-08 Thread Jonathan Woytek
I was finally able to resolve this. So that maybe other users can find how
to fix this if they run into the same issues:

tl;dr:
Edit the virtual machine in question, go under Console, make sure SPICE is
chosen for graphics, and under "USB Redirection" choose "Native." When you
reboot the VM, it will have both UHCI and EHCI (2.0) controllers. Now, any
USB 2.0 devices that you attach will work correctly.

Long version:
I struggled with this for quite a while. While doing some additional
research, I found a note in the 4.1.0 release notes referencing BZ 1373223.
This particular note was for ppc64 architecture systems, but it curiously
said that enabling USB Redirection under SPICE would change the USB
controllers available on the host. I dug a little deeper into the bug
thread and found a couple of references that seemed to indicate that
x86/x86_64 exhibited the same behavior. Apparently, UHCI (1.1) is the
default because it supports SmartCards, but the EHCI (2.0) controller does
not. So, turning on USB Redirection under SPICE settings for the console
enables an EHCI controller, thereby enabling devices that require USB 2.0.

Personal opinion:
This is really obfuscated. It would be great if this switch lived somewhere
more obvious. Even if that doesn't happen, this should exist in a document
somewhere. Maybe it does and I couldn't find it, but I tried!

Hi List,

after some research I found the following but:

Host devicelist in VM Tab is empty after upgrade from 3.6.4

What is the ETA for the 3.6.7?

Best regards

I just upgraded from Ovirt 3.6.3 to 3.6.6.

I have two nodes. One of it is also running the engine.

After the upgrade I noticed that my VMs on the master/engine host are
not able to connect to the USB devices any more.

The "Add Host Devices" dialog is empty and does not show any HW!

On the Hosts Tab I can see "Host Devices".

Please let me know how to fix this issue.

Best regards and thank you

USB passthrough does not require IOMMU, only PCI devices do. The docs need
improvement in that regard.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB

2016-05-15 Thread Nisim Simsolo
Hi

You can attach host device directly from virtual machines tab -> select VM
-> host devices sub tab -> "add device" button.

But first you need to verify your BIOS is supporting intel VT-d or AMD vi.
And you also need to activate it in the kernel. The next link describes how
to do it:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Virtualization_Deployment_and_Administration_Guide/chap-Guest_virtual_machine_device_configuration.html#sect-Guest_virtual_machine_device_configuration-PCI_devices

note: Instead of adding "intel_iommu=pt" in the grub cmdline, add
"intel_iommu=on" or "amd_iommu=on".

Another thing worth mentioning, USB hotplug is not supported yet, so if
your programmable device is resetting the USB connection each time you
program it, the USB will be detached from the VM and you will have to
attach it again in order to see it.

I cant get this to work at all not even from the guest using spice.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB drive Windows problem.

2015-11-11 Thread Lev Veyde
Hi David,

OK, now I understand your setup more clearly.

You're redirecting the USB DOK directly from host into the VM.

In that case no oVirt WGT (nor Spice) are involved, and the access to the
device is done using the standard Windows drivers, yet somehow the passthrough
fails.

I assume that you only inserted one such USB DOK into the host and don't run
both VMs simultaneously (the Linux and Windows one), and in that case we're
left with qemu-kvm and Windows itself as the potential sources of the issue.

Can you please send the qemu-kvm logs ?

Thanks in advance,
Lev Veyde.

Hi.

I use VNC to connect to guests.
for USB redirection using vdsm-hook-hostusb, ie USB pass through from a host to
a guest.

The USB section on the guest is:

Hi David,

What client you're using in order to connect to the VM and on what OS ?
What USB redirection type are you using: Native or Legacy ?

I guess that it's some issue with the Spice but need more details in order to
forward it to them properly.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [ovirt-users] USB

2015-10-05 Thread suporte
Thanks, it's working.
Here is what I did:

On the server node:
yum install -y vdsm-hook-hostusb
systemctl restart vdsmd

On the server engine:
engine-config -s
"UserDefinedVMProperties=hostusb=^0x[0-9a-fA-F]{4}:0x[0-9a-fA-F]{4}$"
service ovirt-engine restart

lsusb to find the device, Vendor and product ID
Shutdown the VM, edit it (Advanced, Custom properties)
Add a custom key, select hostusb and enter the key, in my case 0x04b9:0x0300
Save and start the VM, the USB device must be plugged into the server node.

Then define a custom property called hostusb and set it to

Hi, linked clones with usb redirection in native mode does not start:

engine error:
VM TestPoolAuto-1 is down with error. Exit message: internal error:
process exited while connecting to monitor: qemu-kvm: -device
piix3-usb-uhci,id=usb,bus=pci.0,addr=0x1.0x2: Duplicate ID 'usb' for

We have had this issue fixed in the past. What is version of your
oVirt environment? (That means - upgrade first, test and then let's
see.).

Re: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

2015-01-19 Thread VONDRA Alain
Yes I made this :
engine-config -s "UserDefinedVMProperties=hostusb=0x0572:0x1321"
and nothing appear on the Edit VM, only :
- sndbuf
- vhost
- sap_agent
- viodiskattach

Is there any possibility to verify ?
The first command I put engine-config -s
"UserDefinedVMProperties=hostusb=true;another_property=regexp" following the
doc, maybe this option is blocking the hook ?

Is there any other way to install hooks, the documentation is not so clear, and

Thanks

you don't need to know python.
did you run the engine side commands (engine-config -s
UserDefinedVMProperties... and restarted the engine)?

Hi,

Can you tell me if I can use an USB modem through one of the
hypervisor hosts to a Windows VM ?

I’d like to install a Windows Fax Server.

Thank you for your answers.

should be possible using qemu args: -usbdevice
host:vendor_id:product_id

in libvirt replace @VENDOR@ and @DEVICE@ to device specific properties:

 ...

if this option is not exposed in ui you can use vdsm-hooks[1] to modify the
libvirt configuration and inject such device.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

2015-01-16 Thread VONDRA Alain
I've replaced with openReadOnly(0), but had a "argument 1 must be string or
None, not int" issue, so I changed to None, but I had :

[root@unc-srv-hyp2 ~]$ python2.6 usb_dev.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "usb_dev.py", line 5, in
devices = conn.listAllDevices()
TypeError: listAllDevices() takes exactly 2 arguments (1 given)

I put the VM name in openReadOnly("unc-srv-prnt3") and I had this issue :

libvirt: error : no connection driver available for unc-srv-prnt3
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "usb_dev.py", line 4, in
conn = libvirt.openReadOnly("unc-srv-prnt3")
  File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/libvirt.py", line 247, in
openReadOnly
if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virConnectOpenReadOnly() failed')
libvirt.libvirtError: no connection driver available for unc-srv-prnt3

What's wrong ?

Hi Martin,
That's what I've done, but the result is a missing argument.

It will list libvirt XML for all of the devices, you just need to find correct
vendor id/product id for your usb device and then use the name for detach e.g.
nodedev-detach usb_usb0.

The issue is, you need to get libvirt name of the device and run the
nodedev-detach
- have you done that with no success?

If not, use some simple script such as (python)

import libvirt

conn = libvirt.openReadOnly()
devices = conn.listAllDevices()
for dev in devices:
print dev.XMLDesc()

to easily find the device and use the element for nodedev-detach call.
That should handle unbinding it from the driver and possibly binding it to some
usb stub if that exists.
If that doesn't fix it, I admit that I'm not sure what could be the cause apart
from OS/hw.

How do you check it in the guest?
can you try that with Linux guest to see if any device whatsoever shows up?

The issue is, you need to get libvirt name of the device and run the
nodedev-detach
- have you done that with no success?

If not, use some simple script such as (python)

import libvirt

conn = libvirt.openReadOnly()
devices = conn.listAllDevices()
for dev in devices:
print dev.XMLDesc()

to easily find the device and use the element for nodedev-detach call.
That should
handle unbinding it from the driver and possibly binding it to some usb stub if
that exists.
If that doesn't fix it, I admit that I'm not sure what could be the cause apart
from OS/hw.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

2015-01-16 Thread VONDRA Alain
Hi,
I'm sure of the device, it's clearer with lsusb, you see all the infos about
the device :

Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0572:1321 Conexant Systems (Rockwell), Inc.
Device Descriptor:
  bLength18
  bDescriptorType 1
  bcdUSB 1.10
  bDeviceClass2 Communications
  bDeviceSubClass 0
  bDeviceProtocol 0
  bMaxPacketSize064
idVendor 0x0572 Conexant Systems (Rockwell), Inc.
  idProduct 0x1321
  bcdDevice1.00
  iManufacturer 1 Conexant
  iProduct2 USB Modem
  iSerial 3 24680246
  bNumConfigurations 2
  Configuration Descriptor:
bLength 9
bDescriptorType 2
wTotalLength 73
bNumInterfaces 2
bConfigurationValue 1
iConfiguration 0
bmAttributes 0x80
  (Bus Powered)
MaxPower 100mA
Interface Descriptor:
  bLength 9
  bDescriptorType 4

With nodedev we just see device nodes, pretty difficult to identify, even with
--tree opt :

usb_1_0_1_0
usb_1_1
usb_1_1_1_0
usb_1_1_4
usb_1_1_4_1_0
usb_1_1_4_1_1
usb_1_1_6
usb_1_1_6_1
usb_1_1_6_1_0
usb_1_1_6_1_1_0
usb_1_1_6_1_1_1
usb_1_1_6_1_1_2
usb_2_0_1_0
usb_2_1
usb_2_1_1_0
usb_usb1
usb_usb2

The xml injected is, I think right :

Even with The device on the VM xml, the device does'nt appears in the Windows
VM.
Regards
Alain

Re: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

2015-01-15 Thread VONDRA Alain
Hi,
I've tried also to inject the device with virsh attach-device, all seems to
work but nothing happen in the VM :

[root@unc-srv-hyp2 ~]$ virsh attach-device unc-srv-prnt3 usb-modem.xml
Please enter your authentication name: root
Please enter your password:
Device attached successfully

What did I do wrong, any ideas ?

Re: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

2015-01-15 Thread VONDRA Alain
Hi,
Thank you for your answer, I've tried to insert my USB modem, but it doesn't up
in the Windows VM.
I've tried to insert via virt-manager without success, I can't apply the
modification, however I see the modem using lsusb :

lsusb

I've unload the "cdc_acm" kernel module via rmmod without success.
I've also tried to edit the xml appending the ID and VENDDOR tags :

Ut at the first load the config disappears...
Do I need to restart the host or restart libvirtd services ?

Thanks for your help

should be possible using qemu args: -usbdevice host:vendor_id:product_id

in libvirt replace @VENDOR@ and @DEVICE@ to device specific properties:

  ...
  …

…

if this option is not exposed in ui you can use vdsm-hooks[1] to modify the
libvirt configuration and inject such device.

Hi,

Lev, you are correct; there is nothing to install on the guest for Spice
Native USB.

On the client side there is a need for remote-viewer to be configured
with USB redir enabled,

and having access to the device (via libusb).
On a Windows client currently we use WinUSB driver to enable access to
the USB device.
The driver can be installed using the usbclerk service or manually (e.g.
with Zadig).

It must be installed for each device to be redirected.

On Ovirt, as mentioned, Native Spice USB option has to be enabled.
(This would also add the virtual usb devices needed on the
qemu-kvm/spice-server side).

Hope that helps,
   Uri.

The user/admin only needs to properly configure the VM for Native USB
redirection and install the Spice client.

I forwarded the issue to the Spice team, they could properly point to the issue.

Thanks in advance,
Lev Veyde.

As the oVirt documentation says, when this driver is installed a new USB

Is it possible that this usbredir driver is not in this ISO?

yes, that's the only supported way
you should see the USB controller in devices

there used to be such issue in 3.4..it is fixed in 3.5 already.
It should be a UI problem only…

Is there someone have had this problem?, and how I can solve it?, is it

Re: [ovirt-users] USB redirect

2014-11-24 Thread Juan Jose
Hello Lev and Michal and everybody,

My main question is:

Is it necessary to install in Windows 7 client, no in the guest, the
usbclerk to be able to get USB pen drive into the VM from the Windows 7
client?, in afirmative case, where can I get usbclerk?

Many thanks in advanced,

Juanjo.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB redirect

2014-11-23 Thread Lev Veyde
Hi Michal,

As far as I know there is no need to install something inside VM for the Native
USB redirection to function properly, thus nothing related is included on the
oVirt WGT ISO.

The user/admin only needs to properly configure the VM for Native USB
redirection and install the Spice client.

I forwarded the issue to the Spice team, they could properly point to the issue.

Thanks in advance,
Lev Veyde.

Re: [ovirt-users] USB redirect

2014-11-13 Thread Juan Jose
Hello Michal and everybody,

I'm sorry but I have downloaded ovirt-guest-tools from URL you gave me but
the driver usbredir is not there. Is it normal or maybe it is in another
resource?

As the oVirt documentation says, when this driver is installed a new USB
windows service will be started in the client, but after execute the
ovirt-guest-tool setup and finish the installation there is not any USB new
service in my Windows client.

Is it possible that this usbredir driver is not in this ISO?

Many thanks in advanced,

Juanjo.

usbredir drivers yes, you need them, they should be on the guest tools iso

Re: [ovirt-users] USB redirect

2014-11-11 Thread Juan Jose
Thank you very much Michal, If I have checked Device administrator in my
Windows 7 VM and as you can see in the attached image, the USB device is
correctly installed. But when I click "File" in remote-viewer "USB device
selection" appears in grey and I can't select any USB device.

Is there any other requirement to be able redirect USB devices?, Is it
necessary to install usbclerk in Windows clients to redirect USB to the
Windows guest?

Many thanks in advanced,

Juanjo.

The issue is the VM "Edit" window not loading current value
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1104318), but you can check
the current value in VM "General" sub-tab.

Could you share the exact ovirt-engine version you're using?

Neither, this applies to the client. The host just creates virtual USB
hub and "plugs" redirected USB devices into it and guest sees the
devices just as if they'd be plugged physically.

Client system OTOH needs to handle the device in an unusual way so that
spice/usbredir gets raw control over it - that's the reason why you need
the WinUSB driver to be used for the device prior to actual redirection.

On linux clients, a short-lived binary does similar magic with udev.

Hi Maurice,

I suppose you use Windows client, is it the case? If so, yo either have
to install WinUSB driver for each device manually, or you need to build
usbclerk service, or you need some other tool such as zadig. See this
archived post for reference:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/spice-devel/2013-May/013479.html

If you use Linux client, it's either misconfiguration on your part or by
your distribution, or it is a bug.

there's a description in README and/or some generic readme about working with
custom properties
It needs to be added via engine-config manually (hook is in vdsm whereas custom
properties are in the engine)

I have installed to vdsm-hook-hostusb with yum, but I cannot find the option in

Is this plugin does automatically enabled?
How can I enabled it?

btw, the host devices passthrough is on our list for 3.6 as well…that would
