[xwiki-users] What does "author preserved" mean when importing and exporting?
Hi again, I am confused about http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/ImportExport#HExportingXWikipages When exporting, there is the option "BACKUP PACKAGE (AUTHOR PRESERVED)", and when importing there is the option "Import as backup package". What does it mean that the author is preserved, since the contents of the author textbox are always saved in the package, and there is a separate checkbox to preserve the page authorship history? -Alex ___ users mailing list users@xwiki.org http://lists.xwiki.org/mailman/listinfo/users

PhenoTips already prevents ordinary users from editing technical pages, period. What I really want is to go a step further and only allow the inline form editor (editor=inline) to be used to edit data pages. I do not want users to be able to add classes, objects, or wikitext to pages (editor=class, editor=object, editor=wiki) outside of what the editor written specifically for PhenoTips would allow. If I understand you correctly, manual monitoring and moderation is the only way to prevent a user from, for example, adding a bunch of objects to a page that is supposed to be wikitext-only. I don't think I would have designed XWiki with such loose restrictions, but if this was the design philosophy from the beginning then it makes more sense. (not sure if I explained it right :)). It was confusing to me because I am actually using PhenoTips <https://phenotips.org/>, which is based on XWiki, but in the default configuration I can't see why anyone would want or need to input unstructured data into this application. It seems strange that the user can add ?editor=wiki, ?editor=object, or ?editor=class to the URL and leave the default PhenoTips editor behind. Making scripts unexecutable is a step in the right direction even if it does not lock down the application in the same way that a traditional web app would. In other words, PhenoTips is built on XWiki, but its highly structured data model does not seem to fit the wiki paradigm. Maybe in the future the PhenoTips developers will patch XWiki to allow greater lockdown, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. This looks much better, thank you! I was able to successfully complete the updated tutorial. About the XWiki data model: It seems that "document" and "page" are synonyms, and every page has: - A class definition (a schema for a new type of object, not a schema for what kinds of objects the page can have) - A bag of objects - A string of wikitext - A parent Usually a page will not have all of these. For example, a page that has wikitext should probably not have objects attached to it too. But it looks like there is nothing to prevent ordinary users from adding ?editor=object to the URL and attaching objects to the page anyway. Why is it not more restrictive? -Alex ___ users mailing list users@xwiki.org http://lists.xwiki.org/mailman/listinfo/users
[xwiki-users] FAQ Application tutorial is incomprehensible
Hi, I need to modify an XWiki application to add some functionality, but I am new to XWiki and I am having a really hard time understanding it. I'm running XWiki Enterprise 7.1.2. The FAQ application tutorial http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/DevGuide/FAQTutorialManual looks promising, but the instructions are outdated and I can't figure out how to get a finished product that looks like what the tutorial has. The following instructions are particularly problematic: In the code, change the word Main with the name of the space where you want you FAQ pages to be created There is no word Main. If you click on View the template document and edit that page in wiki mode, you will see the following code: {{include document=FAQ.FAQClassSheet/}} The page is blank, I don't see any code. Use the Create top level menu (when using the Colibri skin) or the Create Panel to create the FAQ.WebHome page I don't see anything marked Create. Is there an experienced XWiki developer who would be willing to go through the FAQ application tutorial and rewrite it to make sense for the latest version of XWiki? More generally, it would be very helpful to have a glossary that defines and relates terms like application, page, document, object, property, class, template, and template provider. These terms are used in the documentation with little or no explanation, which adds to the confusion. -Alex ___ users mailing list users@xwiki.org http://lists.xwiki.org/mailman/listinfo/users

[xwiki-users] LDAP issues with XEM
Hi everyone. 2 issues (sort of related): 1: We have installed XEM 2.4 on Windows Server 2003 using Jetty and mySQL 5, and have successfully got LDAP to work on the main wiki (authenticating against Active Directory) - the user's first/last name appears in the top right (and if they navigate to their profile, the AD info is there). However, when we create a child/sub wiki (and import the standard .xar), the LDAP authentication appears to work, but the same level of user information is not pulled through (only the username appears - no first name, last name or profile details etc). Is there something else we need to set up? Ideally we would like to set the entire farm up so that if a user logs into one, they had their accounts made in each. Alternatively, the ability to import all users and set up accounts would be great - we can then pre-allocate users to specific spaces etc (any news on re-developing the 'Import users from LDAP' plugin?!). We've found the xwiki.preferences class objects page - but are a bit confused! 2: In addition, the process of creating child wikis seems to have an issue with the main administrator (Admin/admin) - when logged in (to one of the child wikis) the 'Preferences' and 'Profile' menu items (in the top right) refer to 'localhost', not the assigned alias/dns... Can anyone point me in the right direction?! (Apologies if this seems a bit of a locked-down approach to using wikis - but as an educational institution, we need to keep the editing of content secure!). Re: [xwiki-users] [Proposal] Rights Management UI
Hi Caty, This version is really cool, just some minor comments: When I mouse over some right icon (FF 3.6), the dropdown menu with allow/deny/etc. is shown, but this menu is very hard to see, because it has almost the same color as the background and the icons are right above the right icons from the line below. The popup with the hint what right it is and why it is inherited is really helpful, but to open it I need to hit the small triangle near to the icon, otherwise only the dropdown menu is shown (but maybe its just because it is not the final version). This might be quite hard for some people. I'd made the icons larger (at least 24x24) and add more contrast (right now inherited rights look like disabled GUI controls to me), especially to the dropdown menu, view right icon and inherited right arrow from the menu. The popup with the hint what right it is and why it is inherited is really helpful, but to open it I need to hit the small triangle near to the icon, otherwise only the dropdown menu is shown (but maybe its just because it is not the final version). This might be quite hard for some people. Hi Alex, yes I know - I reused existing classes from XWiki, didn't made anything custom, that's why is acting like this. The desired interaction will be on hover (icon or arrow) show the inheritance tooltip, on click show the menu. Ok, that will be indeed much better. I'd made the icons larger (at least 24x24) and add more contrast (right now inherited rights look like disabled GUI controls to me), especially to the dropdown menu, view right icon and inherited right arrow from the menu. The main disadvantage of this proposal is it's contrast: ColorThemes variables (highlightColor, secondaryBackgroundColor) and icons. I choose the icons form Silk set, because they are used everywhere in XWiki. The rationale was the consistency and lookfeel. That's why they all are 16x16. If we choose this version as the final one, but we are not pleased with these icons, we need to find another set (maybe as you suggested with 24x24 size) or create it from scratch (then we need to think about the icon representation). The new set should have high contrast between inherited/overridden state. I see, this complicates things, but I would really prefer larger icons, lets see what others say... How about adding a dark border to the dropdown menu or changing its color to the same one used for Export menu etc.? If the icons are not transparent (in the middle), this would also improve the contrast a lot. I like this version, it makes clear what is allowed/denied and why, but it takes a lot of space. What if those rights names would be replaced by big icons and placed side by side? Sometimes, a bunch of fuzzy opinions can lead to a more accurate result. IMPORTANT: Before choosing a logo based on your personal preference, please try to also ask yourself the following questions: - Is it distinctive? - Is it easy to remember and recognize? - Is the design scalable? Could it (or parts of it) be successfully used in a 16X16 icon? Would it look good on a very large poster? - Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark backgrounds? - What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)? It's ok if some details are lost, but it needs to still look attractive and keep the main features. Motivating your vote also helps better understand what qualities a logo evokes in people's minds. Also note that the designs are not final, the selected proposal will be further tweaked and perfected, so don't discard a logo just for minor flaws.
