Re: [vote] Release 1.4 with only generics and stop support for 1.3

2008-03-22 Thread Martijn Dashorst
Time to call this vote...

This thread has collected according to my best calculations the
following statistics:

-1 : 2
-0 : 1
+1 : 6 non-votes in 100 messages : 100 - 6 - 2 - 1 = 91

I think we can safely say that with the next release Wicket will
finally be Java 5 based, will be generics only and that we will drop
support for 1.3 shortly. The release after the generics release will
include all the other stuff we want to do.

We will start the discussion on how to proceed with the planning,
branching and stuff on the dev@ list. If you have to stay on Java 1.4
for a while, please join the dev@ list and share your concerns,
reasons why you can't move to Java 5 and we will see how our planning
will affect your framework use.

Thank you all for voting!

Martijn

okay. sounds good. i find it hard to imagine many people missing 1.3 if
1.4 was available with generics on java 5.

I think Johan and other devs are happy with the results so far :-)
What Johan (and others) want to avoid is to have to maintain multiple
branches at the same time, which would be the case if we would go on
with 1.4 without putting 1.3 to EOL first.

although i say this feeling badly about the possibility that mob rule could
make johan's life harder. in fact, if enough core developers are opposed to
this plan, i think that probably overrules a user vote. after all the core
developers actually have to do all this work (and for free, i might point
out).

my hope is that a 1.4 release with generics support and dropping 1.3 support
could happen very quickly (a couple weeks plus) if everyone works on it.
that would be a big win for everyone. if there are any generic problems
that could use input from me, i'm happy to have a look.

This thread is for voting only. Use the [discuss] thread for voicing
your opinion or asking questions. This makes counting the votes much
easier.

The discussion on our development list makes it clear that a lot of
folks are anxious for generified models. Most users if not all wish us
to release a quick release which is 1.3 + generics. The consequence is
that the core team will stop to support 1.3, and that everybody that
wishes updates will have to migrate to 1.4, and upgrade to Java 5.

Everybody is invited to vote! Please use

[ ] +1, Wicket 1.4 is 1.3 + generics, drop support for 1.3
[ ] -1, I need a supported version running on Java 1.4

Ouch - this is a tough one, as I personally only write projects in Java 5+
but I often
work in Java 1.4 when I do consulting as most companies in telco and
finance still
use Java 1.4. But whatever you chose to do, you will cut off some so I say:
