I tried to install xwiki via the deb package install method on a fresh Ubuntu
Server 12.04 LTS and all apg-get command completed without error. Then the
guide page
(http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/InstallationViaAPT)
said I could visit the wiki on this url:
I really could use a wiki now and wonder if there is any good workaround of
the current install bug?

I don't know what the Distribution Wizard should do, but my installation was
interrupted while installing extensions. It was a clean install on a clean
Ubuntu. I am willing to reformat and reinstall everything, but don't see why
it would work the second time around. I used the apt-get package
Yes, tomcat has been restarted and it changed nothing. When I visit the wiki
page, I am just presented with a login prompt. The extension install is not
resuming. I can log in as Admin and only see pages, but no extension
manager.

I uninstalled 5.4.3 like this:
sudo apt-get remove xwiki
sudo apt-get autoremove
This should have clean out all important parts of xwiki and allow me to
start from scratch (I assume). Then I tried to install the older release,
but apt-get wont allow it:
bme@wiki:~$ sudo apt-get install xwiki
Well, 5.4.1 has the same bug.
During install of the extensions, I am again greeted by this popup window:

installing or uninstalling an extension. You need to re-login in order to

I see. I did try what you said but got this error after a long time (several
minutes):

I finally made it through (with 5.4.2 no less; 5.4.3 isn't available for
apt)! :-D
Thank you for your help!
I noticed that I was using tomcat6 on my initial install attempt and that
might be why it didn't work (no out of memory exception). With tomcat7, the
install completed, however, during
Again, thanks. My following install of 5.4.2 failed like the original
(getting to the login prompt and installation aborts). I guess the leftover
parts from 5.4.1 allow the install of 5.4.2 to complete. :-/
I'll start over with 5.4.1, uninstall with purge but no deletion of the db
or lib, install
For others having failed to install 5.4.2 and dont mind starting from scratch
with 5.4.1, here is a summary of the procedure on how to clean up after the
failed 5.4.2 install and how to install 5.4.1:
These lines completely purge xwiki including your pages(!) from your disk:
sudo apt-get remove
The upgrade from 5.4.1 to 5.4.2 can raw almost without issues by doing this:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
visit http://localhost:8080/xwiki
let it upgrade
when it halts after updating pages/extensions, revisit
http://localhost:8080/xwiki
click continue and it is done

After I managed to install xwiki, I would like to have real-time chat support
as well. I assumed XMPP client/server would do the job, but it doesn't seem
to be working. Are there any extensions that do provide working real-time
chat?
I am using ubuntu/mysql/tomcat7 as base.

Sorry about that. I just thought the extension manager would make a
dependency check that would block the installation, but apparently not.
I don't think Chat Application is not accessible enough for people to use it
and it has other shortcomings like not being able to see who is in a chat
room
Also, I had no idea what jetty was until you hinted it. I thought it was
another extension or plugin, but not a different webserver.
