Once you hit a certain number of mailboxes, vpopmail automatically creates
new mailboxes in subdirectories to prevent the filesystem from slowing down
because of large numbers of subdirectories in a directory.

installed, on a RedHat release 6.2 box.)
Someone on the qmail list advised I could set up an announce-only list,
by eliminating ~/.qmail-list and ~/list, then piping messages directly
to ezmlm-send.
