I have been setting up a new mail server with the following software:
qmail 1.03
vpopmail 5.4.0
Courier IMAP 3.0.8
qmailadmin 1.2.0
vpopmail was configured with:
--enable-roaming-users --enable-relay-clear-minutes=30
courier-imap is running under tcpserver, as per the instructions

Fixed it. Forgot to set CFLAGS to -DHAVE_OPEN_SMTP_RELAY

I'm still having the intermittent pop3 authentication failure problems, but
have a little more info this time.
I did try moving my ~vpopmail/etc directory onto a memory filesystem for
faster file access but this did not eliminate the problem.
The problem occured again a short while ago and
a memory based filesystem for quicker access,
with a backup copy on hard disk. What do you think of that idea?
Moving to MySQL isn't ideal, due to my lack of experience with it.
