got it 100% right but my setup is much improved now.
As I was already using similar compile options, the fix for me was either
the increase of MAXPERIP setting in /usr/local/etc/courier-imap/imapd (thx
Matt) or/as well as mo

Recompile squirrelmail and make sure it ONLY uses authvchkpw... get rid

I'll bet this has to do with your MAXPERIP setting in
/usr/local/etc/courier-imap/imapd
All your connections for webmail access are arriving via localhost, and
that limit is going to determine how many people you can have logged
into imapd via 127.0.0.1 (webmail).
