I would guess that it keeps the strip laying out behind the hook; keeps the
action where it should be prevents it from wrapping around the hook.

Frustrated w/ not being @ Sowbug, ( in particular, not standing in the

60 plus degrees I haven't made to Park Falls for the 7 wt to go w/ my new
reel, so I pulled out the old Wonderrod just to make sure the reel worked. I
I've tied a couple, I'll find them post later, for steelhead. Never heard
them called that though. Don't really use them, except for once or twice for
smallies.
