Re: [VFB] Aspen trip

2016-05-19 Thread Phxflytyer
When I first got to the spot I was going to fish, there was a guide with two
clients. One had landed about a 20" brown and the other about a 24" bow. When I
finally got back with my license and some flies I fish the weed bed where the
24"er was hiding. He came up about three times and looked at my fly, but no
takes.

I really couldn't complain much because the fishing was a little slow for
everyone else. I quit around 2:30 with frozen feet. Man that water was cold.
The wind didn't help much either.

[VFB] Aspen trip

2016-05-19 Thread Phxflytyer
Went to Aspen for a family reunion. My brother in law turned 70, so we all got
together to give him two surprises. One when he got home from work and we were
all in his living room yelling SURPRISE!

The next day our sister in law rented a room on the top floor of the Challet
facing Aspen Mountain. They are both avid skiers so it was very appropriate.

I actually got to fish Friday afternoon and caught one nice Brookie, but the
best part was watching a guide just a short way upstream from me land a LARGE
Rainbow. At first we thought it was a Cuthrought, but the coloring was a little
off.

Monday I got to fish the lake at Maroon Bells. Very picturesque and got a
little Rainbow before the wind and rain and snow chased me off.

Tuesday I got all the way up to the Rudei Reservoir before realizing that I
left my vest home that contained all my midges and tiny nymphs as well as my
license. Had to drive all the way back to Aspen which is about 25 miles. Half
way down the river I stopped at Frying Pan Anglers fly shop and he actually
gave me a duplicate license and sold me some midges. That saved me about an
hour.

Got back up to the river and saw two guys land some nice fish. About a 20"
brown and a24" rainbow. Rigged up and got in the water and fished hard for
about 2 hours before the wind and cold feet got the best of me.

FRYING PAN -1-

ALAN-0-

Awesome trip even though the catching was not so good. The views are
spectacular and awe inspiring. Going to Aspen has never disappointed.
I am truly blessed to be able to experience all of God's wonders.

The lake below the Maroon Bells near Aspen, Colorado is a beautiful setting to
go fishing. I used to camp up on the face of the Maroon Bells at upper left of
that picture. Denver is my home town, so the Aspen area wasn't that far to
drive.

These days, however, there is even a shuttle that takes people on the road up
to the lake area. Kind of ruins the experience compared to the old days.

I got to fish Maroon Bells Lake today . Got one small rainbow on a parachute
Adams.

Got to fish in the rain , snow and grapple. Wind blew down the canyon so bad
that I had to leave.

Tomorrow the Frying Pan.

Re: [VFB] Aspen

2016-05-16 Thread Phxflytyer
Yes it really was a beautiful spot.
Most of the mountains were snow covered.
On the way up to the bridge that crosses where the streams come in, the lake
was pretty low.
There were several remains of avalanches. And all at once the ceiling fell and
in came the snow and rain..
Got so bad I couldn't even side arm cast so I had to leave.

The lake below the Maroon Bells near Aspen, Colorado is a beautiful setting
to go fishing. I used to camp up on the face of the Maroon Bells at upper
left of that picture. Denver is my home town, so the Aspen area wasn't
that far to drive.

These days, however, there is even a shuttle that takes people on the road
up to the lake area. Kind of ruins the experience compared to the old days.

[VFB] Aspen fishing

2016-05-15 Thread Phxflytyer
While I was fishing the Frying Pan River on Friday, a guy across and upstream
from me landed a 10 lb. Cutthroat just about a 1/4 mile below Rudei Res. I was
only fishing for about an hour and caught one Brookie before we had to head to
my brother-in-laws house.

May have some time after church today, but will spend Monday and Tuesday
fishing like I mean it.

Will report my findings in another installment.

Some mistakes are just too much fun to make only once.
