RE: [VFB] Hurricane Isaac now sharpening hook.

2012-09-04 Thread J Balmer
Never made it out to fish this weekend, remnants of Isaac dropped some much
needed rain. Maybe I’ll sneak out for an hour later this week…

Sharpened the hook and it caught fish instead of missing them.

Will post fishing report later.

A nice day for themJ My flat stone is in a pocket in my vest, which I don’t
wear very often any more, the rod, like I said is in a little holster like
my floatant clips on to the chest pack or my vest.

2012-09-03 Thread The Smiths
I have my nippers and hook hone on a 8 cord with a dropper loop in the middle.
The loop is attached to a zinger. When I tie on a fly and clip the tag end of
the leader, the hone is right at hand as a reminder to touch up the hook point.

2012-09-02 Thread J Balmer
I’ve got a flat stone w/ a V cut into it a rod, also w/ a V. The rod fits
into a small holster, the V helps to keep the hook aligned, especially small
ones even w/ a chisel point you can do all four edges two @ a time.

2012-09-02 Thread J Balmer
A nice day for themJ My flat stone is in a pocket in my vest, which I don’t
wear very often any more, the rod, like I said is in a little holster like
my floatant clips on to the chest pack or my vest.

I have a hook stone and I have meant to put in my vest. Will have to do that
now.

My son and two friends will be here till tomorrow. Hope to fish today. I was
tying at Cabala's yesterday and they took the boat out while I was gone.
They had a good day with 33 trout caught between them.

I was watching a video at work( Bass Pro )by Lefty showing that he uses a
diamond impregnated nail file.

He demo'd that he sharpens it on four sides.

Thank you,

Tony, I'd say you had a very successful day. The main thing was for them to
catch fish, right?
You accomplished that. Sometimes the guide doesn't need to catch any. And
at least you

Yes we are getting some rain and wind. I have family here and we wanted to go
fishing. Not sure we will get out on the river. Right now it is calm and just
sprinkling.

Re: [VFB] Hurricane Isaac

2012-08-31 Thread Anthony Spezio
My son and two of his friends are here.and they wanted to Trout Fish. There was
a lull in the rain and we went out. Then things seemed to go wrong. Got all the
stuff down to the boat and got ready to go. I hit the started and the outboard
turned over and did not start. Checked the fuel and every thing else, all
looked good. Hit the starter button and nothing, not even a click.. Pulled on
the pull start and it would not start. I just spent 250.00 having it checked
out at the Marina a month ago..
Let it sit and tried pulling it again and it finally kicked off. We finally got
out of the dock and up to Tucker. The boys got out and waded, I had to fish
from the boat, I just can't wade anymore.
Two of them were using spinning rods and my son was using the bamboo Fly rod I
made for him. On the first cast one of his friends got a 17 Brown. A few casts
later he got a Rainbow. His other friend got a Rainbow in the next few minuets.
I rigged up with a Chili Pepper and motered up the river about 100 feet. A few
casts and I missed a hit. A few more casts and missed another one.
I changed to a floating ant. Nothing hit it then started to drizzle. Changed
back to the Chili Pepper because I was in faster deeper water. I had two more
hits but no hook ups. By then the drizzle turned into a hard rain. My son on
the fly rod caught a couple of bows and broke off one..
Needless to say by the time I collected all the guys back in the boat I was
totally soaked.
I let the outboard run all the time we were on the river hoping it would charge
the battery. When we got back to the dock and shut down, I tried the starter
again. Nothing doing. My son and his friends removed the battery and took it to
be checked.. The battery was totally dead. Got a new battery and will give it
another go later.
This is the first time in years that I have fished Tucker and not caught a
fish. I am thinking, I need to check the hook point on that fly, I missed too
many fish on it.

I read an article that suggested that many fish were lost due to slightly dull
hooks.  This author carried a file and after a period of nymphing would
resharpen the hook.  I am not as diligent as I should be on checking that and
it sounds like my mentor Tony isn't either.
