I am into the old tools rather than the 'disposable' ones. My friend, the butcher, had old knives, hand- operated salami cutters, saws and so forth on the wall of his butcher shop. Lovely stuff. Shame for this sort of stuff to get lost, damaged or tossed in the corner. Re: [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
Whether or not the sport of fly fishing is in trouble I am not sure. Certainly you do not see the younger people getting into it. Our local TU chapter is very active and we do alot of things. However when you look at the core group , it is primarily retired members, with just a couple of younger members who are really active. But when I go fishing there is no lack of fisherman out there. I spend alot of the spring fishing the Delaware river system. Over the years there is more and more people fishing, and spots That I used to have myself, well no longer. There are many times when we can't even get a spot on our home pool . And over the last 20 odd years or so, fishing out west the same thing has occured. There used to be 3 fly shops in West Yellowstone. Now ther are 5, and when you go in there is always people in them. I donot even go into the park to fish anymore during the normal summer season, you can't find a spot to fish. Go to any of the known rivers in Montana, and there are people all over. You have to hike or backpack and seek out the unknown, smaller streams to be alone. So as I said I am not sure of the future of fly fishing. I am seeing younger people fishing, and seeing more women fly fishing also.. What a great shame Tony. The flies you refer to come ouot of Africa and although rubbish, still cost a good $2.50 here. I used to spend big for little return when starting out, before venturing into fly tying and spending big on materials. The old story..The Most Expensive Way to Save Money :) I try to involve my kids in fixing things Ie putting in screws, tightening nuts, etc so that they will know how to take care of themselves and be able to change their own light bulbs. Laugh if you will but there are so many who simply cannot do it. Shame they don't have the fishing bug (fishing fly?? very funny!!). I still enjoy using my grandfather's old tools. Shame he wasn't into making bamboo rods and fly fishing! On 10/08/2014 4:04 AM, 'Anthony Spezio' via VFB Mail wrote: I live in a rural area where they are lakes and rivers all around. [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
I have been fascinated by fish and their environs since a small child. I begged my parents to get me some fishing tackle and eventually, I received a hand line for sea fishing comprising of a lead weight and 3 hooks separated on wire booms. The line was wound around an H shaped handle and one stripped line onto the ground and then whirled the weighted hooks around and let go towards the sea. My father didn't fish, but I believe that I have a deep instinct that makes me want to fish. I don't think that you can make someone into a fly fisher person unless that person either has that deep instinct or interest and is not aware of it. I know people that take up fly fishing and are very gung ho, only to lose interest and to move on to something else. Re: [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
Nev, I still have two of those. One is still brand new, never used. I got that one in a bunch of stuff that was given to me several years ago. That was also my first fishing thing. I caught my first trout on it. You could cast it out then hook the like on a bell that was on a length of spring wire with a bell on it. The wire had a hook bend in it to slip the line in. When the fish took the bait, the bell would ring. I think I was about 10 years old then. I think they cost a whole nickel at that time, that would of been 1939. [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
I think our ages reflect all the fly tying groups in general, however, we are all for the most part active. A good number of our over 50's are still working, all of us volunteer in our areas and we have extended families to take care of. Joyce, it's nice to see someone else in healthcare hanging in, it's the fastest changing industry right now and the pace is picking up. We had decided and planned to retire completely August 29, but have decided we will each need a small business to dabble in.
