[VFB] Tony Spezio and Don Ordes

I called Tony Spezio’s cell number on his birthday which was Sunday 22nd March 
but got no answer, so I left a message wishing him a good day and left it at 
that.

A couple of days ago, I received a message from Don Ordes with the attched pic 
and note 

"Starting all over with a make-shift pen holder. Now I need to make a bobbin 
holder.”

Unfortunately, the stroke has resulted in almost constant pain for Don.

I was in hospitals and nursing home for just over three months and back in the 
hospital twice since then.

partial leg amputation.

Hi Tony, very glad indeed you are home and recovering well.  Looking forward to

Hope your recovery will allow you to do the things you love. If you can tie 
again that would be a real blessing.

For me, the jury is still out on regaining functional use of my right hand. We 
are also trying to figure out what’s wrong with my right hip- hampering my 
walking progress severely.  Strokes are no fun.

Tony is currently having some pretty severe complications.  He's been in the 
hospital for a week and will likely be in for at least another week then will 
have to go to a nursing home for rehab.  He preferred that I not go into 
details on the list.

He has some requests for everyone:

1)NO CALLS TO HIS HOME -  Dot is getting overwhelmed with local calls 
and she is not in the best of shape either.
2)NO CALLS TO HIS CELL PHONE AT THIS TIME - he is having trouble 
talking and breathing and it totally exhausts him.
3)NO E-MAILS  AT THIS TIME -   Tony has no access to e-mails while he 
is in the hospital.  The last time he was in the hospital, he had received so 
many e-mails that he wasn't even able to read them and doesn't want that to 
happen again.  He hopes to be able to use his laptop once he gets in the rehab 
facility.
4)NO CARDS AT THIS TIME - they would have to go to the hospital and 
then get transferred, or they would go to his home and someone would have to go 
out there to get them and then bring them to him.

After Tony gets moved, he will let us know the best way to contact him.  

If you pray, he appreciates being kept in our prayers.

I got a call from Tony.  His phone was about dead and he wanted me to 
let folks know that he's back in the hospital with another TIA and bad 
inner ear infection.


He said he won't be able to get his charger before tomorrow, so calls 
probably won't go through.


He has no idea how long they will keep him in the hospital.

His biggest worry is whether he'll be up to tying at Sowbug in three weeks.

And for those who are not Federation of Fly Fishers members this is the

Board he had 100% of the votes from us, but we have only influence on 
the selection committee.

Not only is nobody more deserving, but I wouldn't be surprised if  
there was a Tony Spezio award sometime in the future.  (Hopefully the  
far flung future, since awards like that usually happen after the

[VFB] Tony Spezio update

GREAT news.

Tony is doing fine.  They were able to the surgery via the scope, so 
he's not in the pain he would have been if they had slashed him open. 
He said he can already tell there's a big improvement in his 
esophagitis problem.


He is eager to get some solid food.  He's getting mighty tired of bouillon. :-)

He will be going home tomorrow.

I can only say: There's nothing worse than having regrets without signature.
How do you make things right when you don't know  know their name? So start
with buying the DVD's and you will know which regrets you don't have to
worry about anymore. (I'll bet you can get the actual signature too.)

Saving hanger rent was the best deal, I kept the plane at home in my garage. 
Yes, I did get a lot of looks especially when I towed it from Oklahoma to N.J. 
when I moved. I had it on a trailer I built especially for the plane..

Looked like it had quite a bit of tongue weight on that station wagon. That 
was a good idea on saving the hangar space.. Did you have any formal education 
in air craft or air foil physics, engineering or something like that?? or just 
built it from experience?? What was that first flight like??? I bet that maiden 
flight would be kinda scary if you felt any vibration, heard any weird noises 
etc. Did you wear a chute when you were testing it??? Oh, and did you ever use 
it to fly to any remote fly fishing places?? I see the Fly Fishing shows on TV, 
and they fly into places that you'd never get to any other way and catch trophy

Thank you for the GREAT news Allan...i talked with Tony the night before he 
had the surgery. I was inquiring as to wether or not he would be able to make 
it to the Conclave, and he was a bit sad that he couldn't go because of the 
surgery. Sure hope he makes it next year. Far as i know, his tyin' spot is 
always his for the takin'. All he has to do is show up. I've got some pull with 
the standing fly tyin' chair (Gene Kazmarek) as well.so lemme know if you 
wanna come and tye.  Next year is his last year as chair, and then Leslie 
Wrixon will be taking over as chair, with Gene assisting her for one year. Then 
she does a three year term, and one year assiting her replacement...and so 
on. This routine is something the Tying Group worked out, so we'll have a new 
chariman every three years.

 For those of you who hadn't heard: Tony Spezio had major surgery 
 yesterday morning.
 
 (FYI - I had one doctor who defined minor surgery as surgery done on 
 someone else.)
 
 Tony had a carotid artery that was 80% clogged. So they ripped the 
 artery open and used the roto-rooter on him (or whatever it is they 
 do).
 
 Lo and behold, Tony actually got to come home this afternoon and is 
 feeling fine this evening.

FYI,

Tony  Dot are okay in spite of the ice storm.  They have no heat, 
power, water, nuttin'.  They can't get their garage door open.  They 
are at a friend's house (Mike Clark) and everyone is okay.

Tony's going to try to get back home tomorrow before everything thaws 
out, because his pipes are frozen and he wants to get them repaired 
before everything is soaked.

He asked me to tell everyone they're okay.

And I did.
