2012-10-16 Thread Anthony Spezio
Bob,
I know what you mean. My wife, her mother and grandmother were quilters.
When we moved, we had plastic tubs full of material. My wife worked in a Fabric
Shop for about 6 years.
She can't quilt anymore so most of the fabric was given away to whoever asked
for it.

Well I can blame it on Al, he said we should take the short cut to school that
morning. We did not have school buses back then. Either walked to school of had
someone take you,
Funny that I brought this up, I just got a call from Al about an hour ago and
we talked for 45 minuets, I reminded him about this and he remembers it real
well. We have stayed in touch all these years. He lives in North Jersey.

2012-10-15 Thread Allan Fish
My big regret is my rod-winder that I had from Herter's. Someone
borrowed it. We had a rod-building class and I took it. Everyone was
admiring the rod-winder. I put it in the top of my cardboard box full
of rod-building junk, When I got home, it wasn't there. Someone must
have borrowed it and forgot to bring it back.

I've still got a couple of spools of thread that have a Herter's label
on them. They're probably about rotted out by now.

I still have the first Herter's rod that I built. It was a bait-casting
fiberglass rod that was as sensitive as a bamboo - a full-flex rod. You
could feel every little bump in the grip. I should replace the guides
on it, they're starting to look pretty skuzzy.

Something I was taught was to lightly coat the hook shank with cement then wrap
with thread.  Halt-hitch after each step.  The guy who taght me said if you can
spin the fly on the hook after tying it would only last a fish or two.
Material was just to expensive.  Also he did not use a bobbin this was in the

Brian;

One of the things I do to make my flies more durable is to put half hitches in
at every junction.

But like you say, not too pretty.

I tie mine to catch fish and sometimes I do weird little things like leaving
off one claw of a craw dad. Or I will put less feet on one side or make one leg
of a hopper shorter or cut in half.
I think it provokes strike because the fish see it as injured and a quick meal.

You won't find that on the commercially tied flies.

Re: [VFB] selling flies now old time tying

2012-10-14 Thread Anthony Spezio
Well I can blame it on Al, he said we should take the short cut to school that
morning. We did not have school buses back then. Either walked to school of had
someone take you,
Funny that I brought this up, I just got a call from Al about an hour ago and
we talked for 45 minuets, I reminded him about this and he remembers it real
well. We have stayed in touch all these years. He lives in North Jersey.

That really DOES date you. And I thought I was getting myself 'dated'
when I found some stuff from a fly shop that closed in 1985.

p.s.,

Bob, all that really means is that you've been tying longer than I
have. I started at what I thought at the time was rather late in life.
Over 30 years ago!! ;-)
