Actually the best way to do this (for future reference, because if you do this now you'll lose all the data on the ipod) is to format the iPod as a PC and Mac compatible external drive, and load whatever you want to back up to it via the finder just like you would any other external drive.

Oh, and there is always the iPodLinux Project http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page Warning: Make sure you dual-boot it otherwise you'll be screwed. I had an old iPod that I overwrote everything w/ Linux and quickly found out that the iPodLinux Project does not have an off function for v3 iPods.
